状语从句
Adverbial clauses
状语从句(adverbial clause)在句中作状语, 状语从句由从属连词引导。状语从句可放在句首或句末。放在句首时，从句后面常用逗号；放在句末时，从句前面往往不用逗号。
时间状语从句：
引导时间状语从句的连词有：
when, while, as, before, after, till, until, since, as soon as ，the moment，every/each time, the first time 等。
我第一次读到那个故事的时候非常惊讶。
The first time I read the story ,I was surprised.
每次我看到那张照片我就会想起她。
Every time I see the photo, I will think of her.
不久你就能知道结果。
It won’t be long before you know the result.
When --- 正在……的时候，突然…。通常主句是进行时或 be about to 时，在翻译的时候，when 可以译成没想到或突然。
I was walking along the street , when I met him.
I was about to fall asleep when my sister came in.
While ---在……期间，往往指一段时间。
While we were in America, we saw him twice.
While we were talking, he came in.
Strike while the iron is hot.
As --- 一边……一边, 随着
She was doing her homework as she was listening to the music.
As she grew older, she became more beautiful.
It is just a week since we arrived here.
(It is /has been… since…是常用句型）
Once --- 一旦……就……
Once you see him, you will never forget him.
条件状语从句---
if 如果 unless --- 如果不, 除非=if not
We can’t get there on time unless we book the earliest flight
= We cannot get there on time if we don’t book the earliest flight.
As long as --- 只要
We will succeed as long as we keep on trying.
You can’t play games as long as you remember the rules.
As (so) far as --- 据……所知
As far as I know, he speaks English very well.
地点状语从句
Where, wherever(无论哪里)
He follows her wherever she goes.
Wherever you are, I will be right there waiting for you.
As --- 因为, 通常放在句首,because 引导的从句通常放主句后。
As it is quite windy today, he decides to put on a jacket.
As he is honest and modest, all his friends like him.
原因状语从句
结果状语从句
引导结果状语从句的连词有：
that, so that, so…that…
such…that
So… that --- so 后面应用形容词或副词, 有时省略so只用that
Boeing 747 is so large that people like to call it jet bomb.
Such …that… such 后面应用名词。
The foreign visitor was such a fast speaker that nobody could understand him.
注意:①当名词前有表示数量的词修饰时，用so.
Mary has so many friends that she has to hold a very big birthday party .
②当修饰的是单数可数名词时，可以替换，当形容词位置不同。
She is such a good girl/ so good a girl that…
目的状语从句
in order that --- 为了, 与so that 相同从句中常常使用一些情态动词，如：can, could, may, might, should等
School was closed early in order that the children might go home ahead of the storm.
结果状语从句
in case --- 万一
Better take more clothes in case the weather is cold.
Please take an umbrella in case it rains.
比较状语从句
引导比较状语从句的连词有：
as…as…, not so (as)…as…, .
…than…, the more… the more...
The more he listened to that song, the less he enjoyed it.
让步状语从句
引导让步状语从句的连词有：
Although, though, as, even if, even though, no matter, however, whatever, while, whether
Although, though ---虽然 although 和though 可以互换. Though 可以引起倒装句
Although it was raining, the plane managed to take off.
The plane managed to take off though it was raining.
No matter (what, when, where, how)
The old man wouldn’t believe anything no matter ____ you said.
Please tell me the result no matter _____ you get it.
He wouldn’t forgive me no matter ____ hard I begged him.

Whatever --- 不管
Whatever other people may say, she won’t change her mind.

在状语从句中，no matter x与xever可以替换使用。
Whether ---不管，常与or not 连用

Whether his proposal is practical or not, the department plans to adopt.
方式状语从句
as, as if, as though
as ---与…… 一样
Do in Rome as the Romans do.
Leave things as they are.
as if, as though --- 仿佛
由as if或 as though引导的从句中可用虚拟语气：说话人认为句子所述的是不真实的或极少有可能发生或存在的情况时。
You look as if you didn’t care．你看上去好像并不在乎。
1、如果从句表示与现在事实相反，谓语动词用一般过去时。
2、从句表示与过去事实相反，谓语动词用“had＋过去分词”。
3、从句表示与将来事实相反，谓语动词用“would／could／might＋动词原形”。
He talks about Rome as if he had been there before．
他说起罗马来好像他以前去过罗马似的。
He opened his mouth as if he would say something．
他张开嘴好像要说什么。
