Seen from the train window, the mountains and forests of Canada looked massive. When the train arrived at the station, they took a taxi to Lake Louise, where the blue water literally took their breath away with its exceptional beauty. They spent the night, and then took a coach bound north through the Canadian Rockies to Jasper. Looking at the beautiful scenery, they both agreed that it was the most awesome journey they had ever taken. In addition to seeing spectacular mountain peaks and forests, one highlight of their trip was being able to see many different creatures, including deer, mountain goats, and even a grizzly bear and an eagle. The experience in Louise and JasperPlaceFeaturesActivitiesEdmontoncentre of Canada’s huge oil and gas industry; cold in winter; home to many shopping mallsCannadian Prairesaw an open country; went through two wheat-growing provinces//PlaceFeatureActivities Winnipegan urban areasaw the rolling hills and bushes and maple trees; saw the Lake HuronOntarioTorontoa land of forests and lakesthe capital of OntarioVancouverLake LouiseJasperOntarioCanadian prairieEdmontonactivites:took a boat ridevisited an________took a ________ hikefeeling:_________activites:saw the__________mountains and forestssaw the______ waterfeeling:took their breath away with its__________ beautyactivites:saw____________mountainpeaks and forestssaw _________ creaturesfeeling:the most __________journeyfeatures:a land of _______________bushes and_____________the wide streth of____________activites:saw an______ countrysaw ___________farmsfeeling:truly_________features:___________capitalcenter of____________________________home to____________________islandpleasantpleasedmassiveblueexceptionalspectaculardifferentawesomeforests and lakesmaple treesamazeda bunch ofopenoil and gas drilling industrymany shoping mallsTorontoprovincialLake HuronUse discourse markers to show relationshipsDiscourse markers are more commonly known as “linking words”. They are used to show relationships between ideas. Such as①to add something (e.g. also, besides, additionally)②to show contrast (e.g. however, on the other hand)③to explain a reason (e.g. because, since)④to show a result (e.g. therefore, as a result)Without discourse markers, the connections between sentences and paragraphs in a text would be less obvious.语篇标记词Learn about discourse markersFunction:Categories:Read the article again and underline the discourse markers(P39-4)1 however(despite, rather than)2 since3 when4 in addition to5 in fact6 later7 eventually(finally)Further thinkingWhat can travel bring to us broaden one’s horizon/expand one’s range of knowledgeenrich/enlarge one’s life experiencebuild ones characterfind what they really want in the heartrelax one’s mindrelieve one’s pressures of life and workrefresh oneself and build up one’s strengthbe an escape from the boredom of one’s everyday lifewiden one’s circle of friendsYou can either travel or read, and either your body or soul must be on the way.Post-readingQ: What can travel bring to us (Make a list of possible benefits.)voice yourself“It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.”
