When it comes to New York City, most people probably picture in their minds the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City that is far less known. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.
I had always known the existence of poverty in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money. Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them, or just be listening.
Every person we met on that trip had a unique story, and they were surprisingly willing to share. They were just in so much need to be listened to. Besides, whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their future.
My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house, fancy cars and a lot of money, but now I see my future differently. I hope it will be one where I can be helpful to others and give back to society. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.

It turns out that overworking your brain with either physical or mental exercise may lower your ability to put off self-satisfaction. And that may set you up for poor choices in your eating habits, self-care and finances.
In a new study, athletes were asked to overtrain for three out of nine weeks, and scientists compared them to a group who did a normal 9-week training program. Not only did those overworked athletes perform worse on a cycling test at the end of the over-training, MRIs (磁共振成像像片) of their brains during behavioral tasks also showed more tiredness in the cognitive (认知的) control part of the brain system.
“Cognitive control in this situation is the ability to keep exercising without being prevented by things like muscle pain,” said study author Bastien Blain, a researcher at University College London. “And what we found is that there is an intellectual (智力的) part involved in exercising and it has a limited ability. You cannot use it forever.” In other words, your brain will burn out and affect your body’s ability to exercise.
But that’s not all. Overworking that part of the brain also reduced the athletes’ abilities to fight temptation (诱惑) of immediate self-satisfaction. “For example, they were asked whether they preferred $10 now or $50 in six months,” Blain said. “And those who over trained were more likely to choose $10 now.” Blain had done a similar study in 2016. A group of 58 adults performed hard tasks over a 6-hour period, then underwent MRI imaging and were asked if they would choose $5 now or $50 later. Researchers found overworked brains were much more likely to choose $5 now.
In fact, another study done by Cornier found that regular limited exercise was related to reducing the wish to eat. “Those people consume less and they lost weight. And the more we saw that change in brain activity due to exercise, the more weight they lost,” Cornier said.

Nearly 40 percent of Americans over the age of 65 take five or more different drugs, and doctors often simply have to monitor patients to see if any of those drugs combine to createnegative side effects. When a doctor prescribes(给……开药)a patient more than one drug atthe same time, they currently have no way to predict whether that combination of these drugswill have a negative side effect. A new system from a team of computer scientists at Stanford University presents a novel solution—an AI-driven computer system that can predict theconsequences of combining two drugs.
Drug combinations are a remarkably unstudied area, but as Marinka Zitnik explains, “It’spractically impossible to test a new drug in combination with all other drugs, because just forone drug that would be five thousand new experiments.” Besides, to maintain accuracy alsoneeds strict research procedures.
So Zitnik and her Stanford colleagues set out to find a solution to the problem. They created a massive deep learning system trained on data encompassing(包含)over l9,00 oproteins and how different drugs interact with those proteins. The system is called Decagon, and it can effectively predict the consequences of combining any two different drugs.
To test out Decagon’s predictive abilities the team examined 10 of the systems predicted drug pair interactions that didn’t have clearly known unfavourable interactions. The researchers found new supporting case study evidence backing up 8 of those 10 predictions. For example, one prediction from Decagon suggested muscle inflammation(炎症) would be caused by combining a certain cholesterol(胆固醇) drug with a blood pressure medication. This negative side effect of combining those two drugs was only recently confirmed by a casestudy published in 2017.
The next stage in the project is to try to turn Decagon into a more user-friendly tool thatdoctors can easily navigate(导航) for information when prescribing combinations of drugs, benefiting more people. At this stage, the system only evaluates(评估) drug pairs but there searchers hope to expand that into more complex combinations of drugs in the future.
