About 15 years ago, I was working at a sewing (缝纫) machine when I lost focus and put the needle straight through my left middle finger — the wound never quite recovered. It’s the kind of warning teachers tell new sewists, but it also creates a metaphor for a feeling that maybe familiar to the 7.7 million people who enjoy sewing as a hobby: the effect of sewing lives on under our skin. It’s a theme that runs through historian Barbara Burman’s book exploring the cultural history of sewing: The Point of the Needle: Why Sewing Matters. For Barbara, her own interest in sewing is something that can be traced back through her life.
“I grew up in a poor household, and I had two very practical parents,” she recalls. “My mother actually taught sewing, dressmaking, and soft tailoring, so I was surrounded by people making things and talking about tools. My interest in sewing comes from an interest in the history of ordinary people, particularly women’s lives. I feel that it’s a kind of untold story. We’re so used to it that we don’t think about it. We put our clothes on, and there we are. But I wanted to look at what sewing actually means at an individual level, as well as a more global level.”
We notice the invention of electricity and countless other creations — but sewing, despite the fact that we couldn’t go about our daily lives without it, is often overlooked. When I ask Barbara why the story of sewing is largely untold, she has some insight.
“Mostly because it’s connected so thoroughly with women, and women have always been, as it were, ‘second rate’,” she explains. “We’ve also lived with this quite false separation between working with our brains and working with our hands. So manual work is thought of as secondary to head work. But, in fact, our hands, and particularly our sense of touch, give us such a huge amount of information in the world. Countless studies have confirmed how beneficial crafts can be for our mental health and well-being.”
24. What does the underlined part in paragraph 1 imply
A. Sewing is strange to people for a long time.
B. Sewing may cause physical injury to sewists.
C. Sewing holds a deep meaning for sewing lovers.
D. Sewing is popular with a large number of teachers.
25. What’s mainly talked about in paragraph 2

B. What sewing meant to the general public.
C. How Barbara’s parents taught her to sew.
D. What family environment Barbara grew up in.
26. Why is the story of sewing ignored according to Barbara
A. Women and manual work are undervalued.
B. People take no interest in the history of sewing.
C. Sewing is not as important as other inventions.
D. People prefer technology rather than hand-craft.
27. What does Barbara think of sewing
A. It is an out-dated craft. B. It is a secondary job.
C. It is a dangerous practice. D. It is a rewarding skill.

What’s the oldest meal you’ve eaten Maybe you’ve had leftovers from a few days ago. They probably still tasted good. But what if it wasn’t a few days ago What if you ate a 60-day-old stew Or a 49-year-old beef noodle soup
Perpetual (永久的) stew is a dish that is never taken off the heat; it’s never finished. As parts of the dish are served, new ingredients are added to the pot to replace them. One day’s stew becomes the basis of the following days’ meals. There have been some famous examples. This year, Annie Rauwerda’s 60-day stew became a social media sensation. One Bangkok restaurant claims to have been cooking its beef noodle soup since the 1970s. It has been suggested that perpetual stew was a tradition in Medieval Europe, when the effort required to start a fire meant that they were left to burn all day, and a pot of stew was always boiling slowly on top of it. One New York Times article tells us about a stew in Normandy that was kept cooking for 300 years.
This tradition may date back to the Middle Ages, but thankfully, our understanding of food safety has developed since then. In a world where food is often thrown away once it reaches its use-by date, many people have asked how safe perpetual stew can actually be. Experts are divided. Some maintain that as long as the stew is kept bubbling away at a temperature too high for bacteria to survive, it should be safe. Others suggest that meat can become dangerous if it’s left in the stew for too long. Concerns have also been raised that some vegetables, such as potatoes, or those containing nitrates (硝酸盐), could become more poisonous the more they are reheated.
Advocates of slow cooking believe that the best food takes time, but even they may be surprised by a months- or years-old perpetual stew.
28. What do we know about perpetual stew
A. It is served in parts. B. It is continuously cooked.
C. It is a popular social trend. D. It is the basis of modern meals.
29. Why does the author list examples of perpetual stew in paragraph 2
A. To show its danger. B. To introduce its taste.
C. To exhibit its diverse forms. D. To explain its working principles.
30. Which of the following is a concern about perpetual stew according to the passage
A. Loss of flavor. B. Lack of nutrition.
C. Hotbed for bacteria. D. Rises in poisonousness.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward perpetual stew
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Critical.
D
The technology for speech-recognition systems has advanced greatly since its appearance in the1950s. Many voice systems can understand the language when spoken at a normal conversational rate. But even the advanced human-machine interfaces (人机交互) used today are unable to trick the listeners into thinking a computer is a human. Why is this Simply put, it’s because human beings rely on more than words to convey ideas or interpret messages, such as tones, facial expressions, body movements, and objects in the world around them.
One significant recent achievement in the field of talking computers is virtual personal assistants(VPAs) on mobile phones. If you tell a mobile phone VPA that you want to schedule a lunch with a friend, it can set the appointment in your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” and has earned fame for its elementary sense of humour. Still, the humour is preprogrammed and can be triggered (触发) only when human users speak certain key words.
While the potential for “real” communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people’s attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won’t be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven’t been practising those skills. Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service. Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion (侵犯) of privacy. When people use certain speech-recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital trail may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of speech-recognition software is worth expecting. Leading companies in the field hope to make human communication with machines as seamless (无缝的) as possible, just like communicating with another human.

I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was S100,and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I'd surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian's demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you my volunteering in an animal shelter last Saturday. So meaningful was the experience that I would never forget it.
We volunteers did a variety of assignments, such as feeding animals, playing with them, cleaning cages and providing medical care. What impressed me most was making preparations for animal adoption. We took pictures of those stray animals, created their profiles, and posted them on the Adopt a Fur Friend website to re-home more stray animals.
Through the activity, I gained a lot. Not only did I learn to treat animals with kindness and love, but also my sense of responsibility strengthened.
Best wishes.

参考范文
I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. There it was our very own pumpkin, its face proudly decorated with a blue satin ribbon signifying our second-place in the contest. A sudden urge to come clean overwhelmed me. I confessed to Brian that, as much as I hated to acknowledge it, we had indeed secured the second position in the Halloween pumpkin-carving competition. Brian flashed a grin and scratched his head. Eyes twinkling with mischief, he disclosed the truth. As the school newspaper photographer, he took that picture the very next day after the contest. It hit me like a punch: he’d known about our win all along.
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything ” I was shocked. Brian glanced down at his half-packed suitcase, then up at me. He admitted that constantly relying on me had always made him feel small, and he was supposed to be the bigger brother. I’d never really thought about how he felt. I was just the big bodyguard for poor Brian. I was so caught up in my role that I never saw it from his perspective. “ I just wanted to do the same for you,” Brian interrupted my thoughts. “ To be the real bigger brother, for a change.” We sat silently on his bed, realizing we were more than just siblings: we were each others guardian angel.

Good evening everyone, and thank you for coming out on this cold evening to hear what I have to say. This is my first visit to Manchester, (17) even though it is one of the neighboring cities of my hometown.I'm honored to be here because I get so many letters and emails from the readers living in this area, and it’s you guys who brought me here.(17)As you know, I'm here to meet you and tell you about the ideas I have put forward in my recently-published book,The Best Way to Learn. (20) In the book,I try to explain that there are some better ways of learning than the ones traditionally used in our schools and colleges. (18) These methods could possibly help those who feel left out by the current system. I'm sure many of you will have questions about my ideas and I will be answering questions from the audience after my talk. However,I would ask you all to visit my website, (19) www.learnwithron.com where you will be able to find detailed explanations of my ideas and lots of other useful things, such as teaching materials and resources. Anyway, let’s get down to the main business of the evening.(20)
