Within 60 seconds of hearing a bell ring, firefighters are dressed and rushing toward a high-rise on fire. They have to head inside, knowing that floors could fall down under them and roofs could fall on their heads. One wrong decision might mean death.
Who would sign up for a job like that Ask firefighter Sam Telfer. He used to sit in a high-rise office of a software company in San Diego, California. Now he is trained to break into rooms full of blinding smoke and overwhelming heat and come up with a rescue strategy.
“I wanted to learn new and practical skills and have a job that varied day by day.” That’s quite an understatement to describe a career that requires you to keep a cool head while attacking a fire. But Telfer says that fires and tension can be conquered in the same way: ongoing physical and mental training.
Telfer was a runner in college, but nowadays he builds up his lung ability for life-threatening conditions instead of races. He might climb hundreds of steps, wearing 34 kilograms of gear (装备), including oxygen tanks. He may carry sufferers to safety. No matter what he does, he must control his breathing.
His survival will depend on more than body fitness. Firefighters must have sufficient mental preparation. To respond to disasters effectively, they study a wide range of subjects such as emergency (紧急) medicine, structural (结构的) design and chemical reactions. They practice quickly judging the changing conditions of a fire. “It is why we love the job,” Telfer says. “We are continuously learning.”
Going from being a software specialist to a first responder was quite a transition for Telfer. Never could he have imagined the challenges he would face. But he says, “Not once have I ever felt that it was not the right job for me.” Danger might be waiting as he heads to work each day. But his body and mind are trained to stay calm, even in the roar of a great fire.
24. Why did Telfer change his job
A. He would like to challenge himself.
B. He wanted to get a high paying job.
C. He had been dreaming of being a firefighter.
D. He was unfit for working in a software company.
25. What do firefighters need to survive the fire
A. They need strong lung ability for races.
B. They need to study how to design buildings.
C. They need more body health than mental preparation.
D. They need mental preparation in addition to body health.
26. What can we learn about Telfer from the last paragraph
A. He regrets leaving the software company.
B. He has faced many difficulties in his former job.
C. He finds his job challenging but still a right choice.
D. He once thought of giving up the job as a firefighter.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Firefighting Hero
B. Firefighters To The Rescue
C. Firefighter: A Challenging Job
D. From A Software Specialist To A First Responder

We are in a time of crisis(危机)when it comes to the planet's limited energy resources. We have to quit our bad habits and focus on more sustainable(可持续的)solutions. But while we are rightly concentrating on Earth's energy balance, we are ignoring the signs that our own bodies are running on empty.
According to a 2023 meta-analysis, one in five worldwide is living with fatigue(疲劳)
unrelated to a medical condition. The fast speed of life and work sends stress levels skyrocketing and wears people out. A poor diet, lack of physical activity or mental health conditions including anxiety, can also lead to feeling tired.
Popular advice to keep fatigue at bay is always to"do more". Top of the list of things you can do to help is to "have a healthy diet and exercise regularly". However,35 percent of UK adults say that being "too tired" holds them back from having a healthier diet and doing more exercise. How can people cook new recipes if their existing lifestyle leaves them without any spare energy How can someone go to the gym when every moment of the day is already taken up by work
Therefore,"do more" isn't the best solution to our tiredness which is often marked by a lack of confidence in one's ability to meet goals and produce good work. If eating healthier and exercising more feels impossible, being told to do these things might only weaken your faith in yourself further.
Instead, we need to "do different" or "do smart". For example, if you feel incapable of dealing with all of life's demands, change the unnecessary for the achievable. Focus on doing something you know you are good at. And don't use all your energy on the task you have to do. lf all your time is spent working, you will miss out on the benefits of relaxation. And when work takes over your free time, it leads to lower overall well-being. Just like our planet, our body energy supplies aren't limitless and we need to break our bad energy habits.
Which aspect of fatigue does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The causes B.The examples C.The effects D.The features
29. What might be the result of "do more" according to the author
A.Having a healthier lifestyle. B.Being energetic a whole day.
C.Reducing your work productivity. D.Lowering your confidence further.
30. What does the author suggest people do
A.Work at all cost. B.Exercise regularly.
C.Take a rest properly. D.Keep challenging yourself.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title
A.The Other Energy Crisis B.The Work Management
C.The Stressful Lifestyle D.The Earth's Energy Balance
D
Microplastics have become a common source of pollution across the Earth---they have settled in the deep sea and on the Himalayas, stuck inside volcanic rocks, filled the stomachs of seabirds and even fallen in fresh Antarctic snow. They are even appearing inside humans.
Now, new research suggests that a simple, cheap measure may significantly reduce the level of microplastics in water from your tap(水龙头): boiling and filtering(过滤)it. In a study published Wednesday in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, researchers from China found that boiling tap water for just five minutes---then filtering it after it cools---could remove at least 80 percent of its microplastics.
Crucially, this process relies on the water containing enough calcium carbonate(碳酸钙)to trap the plastics. In the study, boiling hard water containing 300 milligrams(毫克) of calcium carbonate led to an almost 90 percent drop in plastics. But in samples with less than 60 milligrams of calcium carbonate, boiling reduced the level of plastics by just 25 percent. Additionally, the research didn't include all types of plastics. The team focused only on three common types---polystyrene(聚苯乙烯), polyethylene(聚乙烯) and polypropylene(聚丙烯)---and they didn't study other chemicals previously found in water such as vinyl chloride(聚氯乙烯).
Still, the findings show a potential path forward for reducing microplastic exposure---a task that's becoming increasingly difficult. Even bottled water, scientists found earlier this year, contains 10 to 1,000 times more microplastics than originally thought.
Scientists are still trying to determine how harmful microplastics are---but what they do know has raised concerns. The new study suggests boiling tap water could be a tool to limit intake. “The way they demonstrated how microplastics were trapped through the boiling process was nice," Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay, an environmental engineer at the University of Glasgow in Scotland who was not involved in the research, tells New Scientist. “We should be looking into upgrading drinking water treatment plants so they remove microplastics.”
32. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph
A. By quoting an expert B.By defining a concept.
C. By giving examples D. By providing statistics
33.What determines the effectiveness(有效性)of trapping microplastics in water
A. The hardness of water B. The length of cooling time
C.The frequency of filtering D. The type of plastic in water
34. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning bottled water in paragraph 4
A. The importance of plastic recycling
B. The severity(严重性)of the microplastic problem
C. The danger in overusing pure water
D. The difficulty in treating polluted water
35.What is Gauchotte-Lindsay's suggestion about
A. Choice of new research methods.
B. Possible direction for further study.
C. Need to involve more researchers.
D.Potential application of the findings.

As an artist who shares her journey on social media, I'm often asked by curious followers how to begin an art journey. Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer. I do remember, though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I've put together some good tips for starting an art journey.
●Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook(素描本)for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. 36 You'll want to look back on your journey to see how far you've come.
●Paint often and paint from life. There's no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible.__37___
●Continually challenge yourself to try something new.__38___Artistic growth can be a bit painful. Welcome to the club; we've all been there. I love taking on challenges. I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.
● 39 Seeking and accepting constructive feedback(反馈)is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability.
The journey you're on won't follow a straight path. 40 Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.
A.Get out of your comfort zone.
B.Make career plans and set goals.
C.Don't throw away your beginner art.
D.Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so.
E.You'll hit roadblocks, and you'll feel discouraged at times.

I was busily preparing for our Saturday night barbecue(烧烤), a weekly tradition that brought our family together. Suddenly, our daughter Rikki stormed in through the front door, her face clouded with anger. Without a word, she marched straight to her room, leaving me with a sense of anxiety.
I looked out of the window and saw her classmate Lexi walking away sadly. My mother’s intuition(直觉) told me that this situation might need some gentle guidance. So I called Rikki out to the kitchen, hoping to start a conversation about what had happened.
Rikki stood before me with a stubborn look on her face, the kind that kids get when they know they’ve done something wrong but are too proud to admit it. “I noticed that Lexi came over, but she didn’t stay long,” I said gently. “She’s your age and goes to the same school as you. Why doesn’t she stay longer ”
Rikki said, “I don’t like her, I wish she would stop coming over here all the time. She dresses terrible, and sometimes she doesn’t smell good.”
I sighed and said, “That’s not her fault, Rikki. Maybe she doesn’t have anyone to help her with things like that. Some kids don’t have the extra things that you and your friends have. But that doesn’t make the many less worthy than you. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.”
Rikki nodded but her expression didn’t change. Her father had been watching from the backyard where he was grilling(烧烤). He didn’t like the way Rikki had treated Lexi, so he decided to take action. He came over to me and said “Let’s go and see Lexi.” Then he called Rikki over and asked her to get in the car. Together we drove straight to Lexis house.

The Dual Edges of Short Videos
In today's digital age, short videos have emerged as a common form of entertainment and information dissemination(广泛传播). With a few swipes(轻点;点击), we can access a world of creativity, humor, and knowledge, fostering(促进;培养) a sense of global connectivity. Moreover, short videos provide a platform for aspiring(有抱负的) creators to showcase their talents and even monetize(将...转化成货币) their content, promoting innovation(创新) and entrepreneurship(创业). However, the flip side(负面影响) cannot be ignored. The addictive nature of endless scrolling(无止境的滚动) can consume vast amounts of time, distracting our attention and potentially preventing productivity(生产力).
In my view, the key lies in moderation(适度) and judgement. Embracing short videos' potential for education and inspiration, we should be mindful of(小心;注意) their potential pitfalls(陷阱;隐患) is crucial(至关重要的).
八、读后续写:
At Lexi's house, Rikki was shocked to see how different her life was. Entering the yard, a shabby house which stood lonely came into view and seemed to be in need of repair. Lexi's mother welcomed us warmly, though her eyes revealed the hardship they were enduring. Inside the house, the decrepit(破旧的) furniture as well as the crumbling(即将坍塌的) walls spoke about their financial struggles in silence. Rikki's eyes widened as she witnessed the evident contrast between her own home and Lexi's, making her realize how awful she was.
Rikki invited Lexi to come over and have dinner with us. At first, Lexi hesitated, but Rikki's understanding and genuine smile convinced her. During the barbecue, Rikki introduced Lexi to everyone, ensuring she felt included. That night, as they all sat under the stars, their eyes sparkled with cheerful light, through which I could see the evident transformation in Rikki: The stubbornness(固执) had been replaced by a warm, inclusive(包容一切的) behavior. This weekly night barbecue tradition not only brought our family together but also let Rikki learn a valuable lesson about empathy(=sympathy) and kindness, which made the evening memorable.

W: He’s a teenager named Charlie Watson. He has his own soccer website. He designed it himself and did all the work. He’s only 17, and he already has a million dollars. There’s also a boy named Felipe Flores. He climbed the highest mountain in the Andes.
M: So, who are you going to vote for
W: I’m not sure. There are two I really like.
M: Who are they
W: One is a girl named Anna Philipova. She’s 13 years old. There was a terrible fire in her home, and she walked right into the burning building to rescue her two little brothers. She got them both out alive, but her hand was badly burned.
M: Wow! And who’s the other
W: The other’s a 16-year-old boy named Malik Monroe. He gave three million dollars to hospitals and schools in Africa last year.
M: How does he get the money
W: He organizes big concerts in schools and colleges all over the USA. Then he gives all the money he gets from the concerts to hospitals and schools in Africa.
M: Mr. Perkins stood at the bus stop and watched the cars go by. Many of the cars were new Beta 400s, and most of them were yellow. Mr. Perkins always wore the same clothes as other men, ate the same food as other people, and did the same things after work and at the end of the week. Mr. Perkins did not like to be different. The following week, Mr. Perkins bought a new, bright yellow Beta 400s. He was satisfied with it, and drove to work in it the very next day. He was even more satisfied with his new car when he saw all the other Beta 400s in front, behind, and on both sides of him.
Mr. Perkins parked his car in a big parking lot near his office, and worked the rest of the day. But when he came back at five o’clock, there were so many bright yellow Beta 400s in the parking lot that he did not know which was his car. He tried his key in some of the cars, but people passing by gave him a look he didn’t like. So he stopped. Poor Mr. Perkins had to wait nearly two hours until his car was the only one left in the parking lot.
