Ryan Hreljac is a boy living in Canada. Without his help, hundreds of wells that now provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America and India might never have been built. Ryan is what you might call a water ambassador. He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.
Ryan’s efforts didn’t begin in a far-off place, but right at home in Kemptville, Ontario. When he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. Some even die from drinking dirty water, his teacher said. So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2,000, enough to dig one well.
An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) chose a site for the well in the village of Agweo, in Uganda. Two years later, CPAR arranged for Ryan to visit Uganda for the opening ceremony of the well. Ryan met a new friend named Jimmy. Then they formed a close friendship. He often traveled with Ryan to explain how water changed his life.
After the first well, “the ripple effect took over,” Ryan says, “and one goal led to another.” With adults’ help, he founded Ryan’s Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $1.5 million and built 255wells that serve more than 427,000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn’t bragging(炫耀). “The most impressive people I’ve met are the other kids who want to help too,” he says. “I’m just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. That’s the key reason why I made it come true. Everybody can do something.”
24. What problem is Ryan working to solve
A. Not enough money for education.
B. A shortage of safe drinking water.
C. African children’s being extremely poor.
D. Polluted water causing diseases.
25. How did Ryan get money for his first well
A. He did chores and sold his idea.
B. He created an educational foundation.
C. He traveled to villages across the world.
D. He started a website to ask for donations.
26. What would be the most important for Ryan to realize his dream
A. Knowing his limits. B. Making friends.
C. Never giving up. D. Not bragging about awards.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. A Story of a Special Well
B. An Organization of Saving Water
C. A Boy Who Makes a Difference
D. A Well That Brought People Together

When you think of a typical American, who do you picture A pretty blond white American like Taylor Swift or a handsome black American like basketball star Michael Jordan In fact, there was a time when the average American looked like neither of these people.
Back in the year 1500, the average American was a brown-skinned hunter-gatherer who probably rode a horse and wore clothing made from animal skins. Today, the ancestors of these people are broadly referred to as “Native Americans”, “American Indians” or simply “Indians”.
When the European settlement of North America began, there was intense conflict between settlers from overseas and these native people. In 1830, former US president Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. This act required all Indians to migrate to west of the Mississippi River to allow for the expansion of the US. American Indians were treated as a military “enemy” until 1924, when the few Indians still alive at that point were granted US citizenship. That was the first time that the US government formally recognized the rights of Indians.
While the story of the American Indians has been a sad one, their legacy is still felt every day in the US. Many US geographical names come from Indian languages, such as Ohio, Topeka, Kansas and the Potomac River. At the same time, there are many successful academics and other important US leaders who are descended (是…的后裔) from Indians. And nowadays, more and more history classes in US public schools are educating students about how Indians suffered during the settlement of the US.
Although what happened cannot be undone, we can learn at least one thing from the sad history of the Indians: If we want a better future, we must look carefully and honestly at the past.
28. Why does the writer mention Taylor Swift and Michael Jordan
A. To challenge readers’ ideas of a typical American.
B. To support the writer’s point on American identity.
C. To provide typical examples of native Americans.
D. To compare their appearances with typical Americans.
29. How were the American Indians treated in the middle of the 19th century
A. They were granted US citizenship.
B. They were regarded as a military “enemy”.
C. They were required to live along the Mississippi River.
D. They were asked to leave the country by the US government.
30. Which of the following aspects shows the American Indian legacy today
A. Origins of names of some places.
B. Popularity of the Indian language.
C. Success of the Academic and other important US leaders.
D. More and more history classes in American public schools.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward the history of American Indians
A. It should be ignored to move on. B. It holds little interest for him.
C. It’s hurtful to be reminded of it. D. It’s valuable to reflect on it.
D
Studies have found that having lots of friends helps us feel happier. But sometimes we stop talking to friends we used to be close with.
Scientists did seven studies with about 2,500 people. They wanted to know how people feel about getting back in touch with friends they haven’t talked to in a while. They looked at the problems and reasons for reconnecting and if there were ways to help people send a message to old friend.
To see how willing people were to reconnect, the scientists asked them how ready they were to do different things right away. This included calling or texting a friend they hadn’t talked to in a long time. The results showed that people were not very excited about reaching out to an old friend, just like they don’t want to talk to someone new or pick up trash.
People were worried that their old friends might not want to hear from them. It might be weird to reconnect after so long, and they felt bad. They thought both they and their old friends were too busy to talk again.
People thought there were only a few good reasons to get in touch, like saying happy birthday to a friend. Talking about a memory they shared was the second reason. They didn’t like the idea of asking an old friend for help.
A scientist said that even though people were warned about how an old friend would react to their message, the help they offered to ease this worry didn’t really work well. The scientist added that we know from many years of research that friends make us happy and give our lives meaning. These research findings will encourage people to send a message to someone they miss. It will be the first step to establish contact with friends they have not communicated with for a long period.
32. What is the main focus of the scientists’ research
A. The benefits of maintaining friendships.
B. The process of forming new friendships.
C. The feelings about reconnecting with old friendships.
D. The reasons for losing contact with long-lost friends.
33. What did the scientists find out about people’s willingness to reconnect with old friends
A. Most people wanted to reconnect.
B. People were not sure about contacting old friends.
C. People liked to ask old friends for help.
D. Being busy was the main reason for not making contact.
34. What does the underlined word “weird” mean in paragraph 4
A. Strange. B. Interesting. C. Fashionable. D. Fresh.
35. What was found to help people contact old friends
A. Sending a message to ask for a favor.
B. Focusing on the guilt of not reaching out.
C. Expressing concerns over the message reception.
D. Practicing social connection with current friends first.

My mom was a kind woman. She had an unusual view on helping others that I didn’t really understand until one cold, winter day when we picked up my brothers at school.
“Who is that child ” Mom pointed at a skinny, angry-looking girl across the street. “She doesn’t even have a coat. It’s freezing!” “That’s Becky Ingler. She always looks mad like that,” I replied. Becky didn’t have a father, and everybody laughed at her. “I’ll visit her tomorrow,” Mom said.
The next day, we went to the Inglers’ house. A tired-looking woman appeared, and Mom smiled, “Hello, Mrs. Ingler. I’m just visiting some of our neighbors.” Once inside, I noticed there was a rusty coal stove and a big messy bed. Mom looked at each of the children carefully.
As we left, Mom told Mrs. Ingler she would visit them again soon.
Mom’s old sewing machine (缝纫机) worked for two days and nights to turn some shabby clothes into stylish winter coats. She said to me, “I need your help to send these coats to the Inglers this afternoon.”
“Wow!” I said. “They’re lucky to get these.”
“No,” said Mom as she faced me. “We’re the lucky ones to be able to help them. We must make sure these coats are given freely, without the Inglers paying a price for them.” I didn’t understand what Mom meant. Mom explained, “I don’t want these coats to cost them their pride or dignity (尊严). We can’t show we are somehow better than they are.”
I asked Mom what we should do if they refused the coats. Mom smiled and said, “I have a plan in mind.”

【答案】Dear Tim,
Knowing that you are enthusiastic about Chinese traditional festivals, I’m writing to introduce my favourite one named the Lantern Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Spring Festival.
There is a wide range of interesting activities. People get together to have a family reunion dinner, eating tang yuan, balls of sticky rice flour stuffed with different fillings. Its round shape symbolizes unity, harmony and happiness. After dinner, family and friends go out to enjoy the magnificent and dazzling lantern show and guess riddles written on the lanterns.
It allows Chinese people to gratefully reunite with family members, which has been an integral part of Chinese culture.
Yours,
Li Hua

It seems a shame to donate them.” Mom lifted a beautiful coat out of the bag. Mrs. Ingler looked at the coat, and then glanced at Becky. “I’d be happy to help.” Mrs. Ingler gave my mother a knowing look. “Thank you.” “You’re doing us a favor,” Mom smiled.
As we left, I noticed Becky examining the coats happily. She lifted her head and smiled al Mom and me. She looked so happy and satisfied. It seemed that she became a Becky I hadn’t seen before. And we smiled back. Over the years, I thought about how Mom accomplished that act of kindness, and about her gift for caring about others. What Mom did was truly an act of kindness. I will follow in Mom’s footsteps and care for others truly.
