Born in Salford in 1966, Russell Watson is the UK’s bestselling classical crossover artist. He began his career in the working-class clubs of the northwest before getting a record deal and releasing The Voice, an album that held No.1 for an impressive 52 weeks.
At the age of 15, Watson’s room, though small, was filled with photos of Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, and Paul Weller. While he was deeply attached to music, football was his primary passion. His first guitar, which he saw in a shop window, cost 300 — a small fortune at the time. His family, with his mother as a stay-at-home parent and his father working at the factory, couldn’t afford it. Determined, Watson took on paper rounds and even washed cars during school holidays to save enough money. That guitar became his most treasured item, though he later sold it during tough financial times in the 2000s.
Watson’s big break came when his mother arranged his first performance in a local club. Although they were paid in custard creams and tea, it marked the beginning of his career.
Early performances were tough, and the audience wasn’t always receptive. However, Watson learned how to engage and connect with them, an experience that shaped him into a seasoned performer.
By 1999, he was recording in George Martin’s studio, and his classical crossover career took off, especially after teamwork with artists like Shaun Ryder. However, in 2003, health problems, including throat and vocal (声带) diseases, stopped his progress. Watson faced even more serious health challenges in 2005 when he suffered from brain tumours (肿瘤). In spite of this, he remained devoted, continuing to work on his album. Though told he wouldn’t perform like his younger self, Watson’s voice is now stronger than ever, and he remains grateful for the journey that has shaped him.
24.What do we know about Russell Watson according to paragraph 1
A.He was born in the US in 1966. B.His first album was a hit.
C.He set the highest sales record. D.He started the working-class club.
25.Why did Watson sell his first guitar
A.To give in to his father. B.To fund his first album.
C.To get a better instrument. D.To address financial struggles.
26.The underlined phrase “custard creams and tea” in paragraph 3 implies __.
A.humble income B.appropriate rewards
C.symbolic recognition D.professional contracts
27.What can we say about Watson from the text
A.He puts fame before health. B.He lacks musical devotion.
C.He has strong willpower. D.He relies only on natural talent.

Scientists inspired by the octopus’s (章鱼) nervous system have developed a robot that can decide how to move or grasp (抓紧) objects by sensing its environment. The team from the University of Bristol’s Faculty of Science and Engineering designed a simple yet smart robot which uses fluid flows of air or water to adjust suction (吸力) and movement as octopuses do with multiple arms.
The study, published today in the journal Science Robotics, shows how a soft robot can use suction flow not just to stick to things, but also to sense its environment and control its own actions—just like an octopus. A single suction system can make robot catch delicate (微小的) items, sense whether it’s touching air, water, or a rough surface, and even predict how hard something is pulling on it—all at once, without needing a central computer.
Lead author Tianqi Yue explained, “Last year, we developed an artificial suction cup that mimicked how octopuses stick to rocks using soft materials and water sealing. This research builds on that work, from using a suction cup like an octopus sucker to connect to objects to using ‘suction intelligence’.”
The robot operates on two levels: by combining suction flow with local fluidic circuits, soft robots can achieve octopus-like low-level intelligence, such as gently grasping fragile objects. By sensing the pressure response from a suction cup, robots can achieve high-level awareness, including discovery of contact, classification of environment and surface texture, and predicting interactive pulling forces.
This simple and low-cost suction intelligence could lead to a new generation of soft robots that are safer, smarter, and more energy-efficient. The team is currently working on making the system smaller and stronger for real-world use. They also aim to combine it with smart materials and AI to improve its ability to adapt and decision-making in complex environments.
28.How does the robot know how to move and hold an object
A.By judging fluid flow. B.By sensing the object’s size.
C.By following the given order. D.By sensing its surroundings.
29.What do the underlined words “mimicked” mean in paragraph 3
A.Copied. B.Figured. C.Respected. D.Decided.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The robot’s reasons for popularity. B.The robot’s working principle.
C.The robot’s contribution to society. D.The robot’s specific function.
31.What robot do the researchers intend to invent
A.A smarter and more convenient one. B.A simple and effective one.
C.A smaller and practical one. D.A stronger and more complex one.

Have you ever stepped into a restaurant or shop and been greeted by a seated cat figure with its paw(爪子) up in the air These cats, known as maneki-neko, are found all around the world, but are native to Japan.
In Japanese, maneki means “beckoning”(招手示意) and neko means “cat”. Business owners place the cats in their shop entrances in the hope that the cats will bring in good luck, as well as paying customers. For this reason, English speakers often refer to them as “Lucky Cats” or “Welcoming Cats”.
To people from Western countries, the waving gesture looks like a “hello”, but in Japan and other Asian countries, an upright arm with fingers moving is a way to say, “Come here”. While the name maneki-neko implies this gesture, some historians believe the upright pa w shows that the cat is washing its face. This idea might have some truth in its gesture as an old Japanese belief says that a cat washing its face means a visitor is sure to arrive. An ancient Chinese tale supports this idea: “If a cat raises its pa w over the ears and washes its face, then clients will come.”
Whether a maneki-neko is washing its face or calling someone to approach, its paws indicate further clues to the fortune it might bring. When the right paw is raised, money is said to come, while the left pa w is believed to attract customers. The higher a cat’s paw is, the more fortune a cat is thought to bring.
Like Japan’s beloved Hello Kitty character, maneki-neko figures are modeled after a native cat called Japanese bobcats, known for their short tails. Because of an old tale, these cats have long been relevant to luck. According to the story, a monk(和尚) was sitting under a tree when his cat beckoned with his paw for the monk to come to him. Puzzled, the monk walked over to the cat. A large branch fell where the monk had just been seated.
32.Why do businessmen prefer placing a cat figure near the gate of shop
A.Because the cat means good fortune. B.Because the cat will pay customers’ bill.
C.Because the cat is more lovely than the dog. D.Because the cat is praised by English speakers.
33.What is the meaning of a cat putting the right pa w up
A.It implies washing its face. B.It waves goodbye to you.
C.It makes the client puzzled. D.It shows the road to wealth.
34.What can we learn about the maneki-neko figures
A.It has a long tail with luck. B.It is often seated under a tree.
C.It is based on native bobcats. D.It is more popular than Hello Kitty.
35.Which of the following is the best title of the text
A.A Cat and a Monk. B.A Cat with its Lucky Paws.
C.A Cat and its Friends Hello Kitty. D.A Cat with its Japanese Name.

Adler lived with his unemployed mother and a younger brother in a small house in Durango. Like other boys at his age, the golden-haired boy wanted to play with his friends and have fun, but fate had other plans. After observing what was happening in his house, the boy decided to do something for his family. He picked up his only toy, a ball, and left his house with a mission—to help his family.
Little Adler walked to the nearest store with his last toy in hand, hoping he could sell it. While the little boy was selling his toy at the street, a man with the TikTok name Ruben Cervantes spotted him. Curious, he approached Adler to see what happened to him.
With tears in his eyes the little one said, “I just want to sell my only toy, sir. Would you like it ” When Cervantes learned Adler was selling his toy to help his family, he asked, “How much is it ” Adler replied, “I don’t want money, sir I just want milk and bread for my family.”
At that moment, Cervantes was so moved While other children at his age were enjoying and living a carefree life, Adler was worrying about his home’s financial situation. Without hesitation, Cervantes took the ball from the boy, gave him a hug and said, “Don’t cry, my boy. I’ll keep your ball for now, hoping to play it with you one day.” Cervantes did buy milk and bread in exchange for his ball and sent him back home. The boy flashed a toothy smile and said, “Thank you so much, sir. I’m looking forward.”
Immediately Cervantes got home, he posted Adler’s story on TikTok. All the viewers were touched by his devotion to his family and expressed their willingness to help the poor family. For a month, piles of food and clothes were flooding into Cervantes’ home. Apparently, it’s time for him to pay a visit.

M: No, I’m writing a letter to the government. You know, they are discussing a plan to build an airport here.
W: Yeah, I’m also worried about that. The noise, the traffic jams.
M: I’m not that worried about that. You know, we’ve got double windows in our rooms and we don’t drive. But the air here is already officially listed as poor quality. And it’ll get worse if the plan goes ahead.

【原文】The national park we will visit is located in the desert just north of our city. Like any hike of this nature, you should be prepared for the adventure in the desert. First hike with a partner for safety. I enjoy hiking with family members and close friends. Second, carry a cell phone with you. However, keep in mind that you might not get any signal in some places, so don’t depend on it. Third, be sure to have the right clothing and shoes or boots for the hike. Light, breathable clothing is the best during the summer, along with a hat and strong hiking shoes. Fourth, carry plenty of water. Having a few snacks can give you energy, too. Fifth, take a small first aid box with you, particularly on longer hikes in case you get injured. Sixth, pack a detailed map of the area you are hiking, along with a compass or a GPS to locate your position. And finally, take nothing home with you except pictures and memories. You can protect these areas by leaving all rocks, flowers and other objects for future visitors.

Though told he wouldn’t perform like his younger self, Watson’s voice is now stronger than ever, and he remains grateful for the journey that has shaped him.(然而,在2003年,健康问题,包括喉咙和声音疾病,阻止了他的进步。
