A Chinese boarding school designed to let students unwind and “waste time mindfully” has been named 2023’s World Building of the Year.
Characterized by a rooftop park, treehouses and elevated walkways in a “floating forest,” the Huizhen High School in Ningbo (HHHSN), Zhejiang province in eastern China, won the coveted (梦寐以求的) title at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore on Friday.
Designed by Approach Design Studio and the Zhejiang University of Technology Engineering Design Group, the peaceful campus’ communal areas are intended to mix the boundaries between inside and out. The building is characterized by an open-air lecture hall and tree-lined pathways, in addition to study facilities for the 30-class school’s students.
The coveted World Building of the Year title is considered one of the architecture profession’s top awards and is decided at the annual festival by a 140-strong expert panel. This year’s winning design was praised by judges for breaking with the conventions of school design.
Quoting the panel while presenting the award on stage, WAF’s program director Paul Finch described the project as “(as) unexpected as it is delightful.”
“The architects managed to create a school which is very different from the usual model, where students are boxed in and put under teaching—as well as architectural—pressure,” Finch told attendees. “By contrast, this design encourages walking fresh air and the possibility of relief from academic intensity.”
The design was chosen from almost 250 shortlisted projects, including Newark Liberty International Airport’s recently opened Terminal A, Australia’s Holocaust Museum in Melbourne and new national stadiums in both Cambodia and Senegal.
Buildings were judged across 18 categories, spanning commercial, cultural and residential architecture. Those winners then competed for the overall prize. Huizhen High School triumphed in the school category.
24.How was the World Building of the Year determined at the WAF
A.By a panel of 140 experts. B.By a random selection process.
C.By popular vote from attendees. D.By the architects who submitted their designs.
25.What impact did the design of Huizhen High School have on students
A.It offered the largest rooftop park in Europe.
B.It encouraged students to engage in outdoor learning.
C.It created a free and relaxing learning atmosphere.
D.It boxed students under teaching and architectural pressure.
26.Which can best describe the design of Huizhen High School
A.Unique and expensive. B.Peaceful and traditional.
C.Adventurous and safe. D.Relaxing and innovative.
27.What’s the purpose of the passage
A.To explore a new model of school design. B.To compare a new model and an old one.
C.To introduce a new model of school design. D.To promote a new model of school design.

In the early 1900s, French chemist, Edouard Benedictus, invented shatterproof (防碎的) glass by chance. But its significance and relevance didn’t emerge until the car market created the problem for which he had already found the answer.
Such moments of serendipity reveal the unpredictable nature of innovation. Yet, even in cases where chance plays a role, as in Benedictus’s story, the broader question remains: Are such discoveries truly born of luck, or were they somehow “in the air,” waiting for the right person to seize them
Some argue all the discoveries would have been made by other people. They believe if the time was ripe in conceptual and technological terms, someone would have got there sooner or later. This is the used and abused understanding of theories that were “in the air”. Independently, Charles Darwin and Alfred R. Wallace (the latter 15 years behind Darwin) arrived at the theory of evolution by natural selection, both counting on similar data. There existed slight differences in the theory, but the coincidences of thought were astonishing. This phenomenon, which also exists in biological evolution, is called convergence: two non-closely related species develop similar functional adaptations. This occurs because the environment poses similar survival problems to both, namely similar selective pressures. This is an important clue that can help explain why this dynamic also exists in scientific knowledge: There are similar selective pressures and different research groups that compete to come up with the solutions.
If we analyze the steps undertaken that led to the result, we can see that there were in fact some accidental elements. The overall dynamic was not accidental, though. Yet is it really possible that all discoveries were in the air
Let us assume for a moment that this is true and that the most luck can do is speed up the inevitable. All scientists arc standing on the shoulders of the giants who have gone before them, and there is objectively a cumulative (积累的) element in science. Nevertheless, at some point and in the right circumstances, it was the unknown scientists, not the giants, who managed to see a little farther. The mind of the giant was imprisoned by prior knowledge and so trapped within the framework of established habits, research questions, and established methods. The new, little-known scientist, on the other hand, will in one way or another have been able to break free of the chains of established knowledge. And so it will have been possible for them to imagine other worlds. This suggests that it will be innovators, with their prepared minds, who have a better chance of making accidental discoveries, namely that are irregular and unexpected.
28.In paragraph 2 “serendipity” refers to __________.
A.accidental invention B.emergence of problems
C.late recognition D.chemical innovation
29.The example of Darwin and Wallace is given to illustrate __________.
A.fierce competition among biological scientists
B.the important role of similar data in intentional research
C.independent but similar solutions under shared pressures
D.limited resources and technological dependency in science
30.What advantage might lesser-known scientists have over established researchers
A.Access to advanced tools. B.Freedom from rigid mindsets.
C.Stronger peer cooperation. D.Greater funding opportunities.
31.Which statement best reflects the main idea of the passage
A.All discoveries are inevitable results of technological progress.
B.Serendipity alone drives groundbreaking scientific achievements.
C.Traditional methods prevent innovation and should be abandoned.
D.Major breakthroughs integrate prepared minds with accidental opportunities.

Terns (燕鸥) chirping and wolves howling are among a pioneering composition that integrates sounds from nature with traditional instruments. Bird songs and animal calls will interact with orchestral music on an album by Stewart Copeland.
Wild Concerto, released on 18 April, is a “cooperation between nature and music”. A croaking frog, a black-footed albatross (信天翁), and a red deer will “perform” with Copeland, alongside 30musicians from the Kingdom Orchestra. Copeland said none of the natural recordings had been manipulated or returned. “All the bird and animal sounds are exactly as they were, but I put them in positions so that they add up to a melody and rhythm,” he said. “Their voices bring an super authenticity to the music. They all have their own individual melodies but when you put an instrument in, everything is more amazing.”
Wild Concerto is inspired by the arctic tern’s migration from pole to pole, and creatures possibly encountered along the way. Copeland said there was a conservationist theme to the work. “Many of these species are endangered and their sounds could vanish in our lifetime. Through the Wild Concerto, their voices will be kept immortalized.”
For six decades, he has captured sounds of the natural world, from rain-forests to deserts — recordings heard in natural history series such as Our Oceans and Blue Planet as well as about 150films. With a document of almost 100,000 recordings he has been called “the David Attenborough of sound”. Copeland is a brilliant talent. He’s combined natural sounds and music seamlessly. This is another way for people to listen to nature.
He hopes the album will raise awareness of creatures that are by noise pollution that their sounds cannot be captured cleanly: “Two-thirds of the species in my library are now basically extinct. Twenty-five or 30 years ago, when I wanted to record one hour of primitive sound, it took about three or four hours to do that with minimal editing, compared to 2,000 recording hours today, because there are so many man-made sounds in the environment...”
32.What is the feature of the album Wild Concerto
A.Integrating natural sounds with music perfectly.
B.Mixing bird songs with animal calls completely.
C.Producing super realistic bird songs and animal calls.
D.Making successful changes to bird songs and animal calls.
33.What does the underlined word “manipulated” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Monitored. B.Analyzed. C.Matched. D.Edited.
34.What do we know about Copeland
A.He was optimistic and hopeful about the wildlife situation.
B.He was indifferent and helpless about the noise pollution.
C.He expressed his great concern about the endangered species.
D.He demonstrated enormous passion about the success of the concert.
35.What does the author think of Copeland’s efforts
A.Time-consuming and fruitless. B.Notable and remarkable.
C.Efficient and innovative. D.Meaningless and conventional.
The Power of Peers
Do birds of a feather really flock together People do tend to choose friends who are similar to them. Many behaviors spread socially. Activities in certain brain areas change when other people are around. 36 You can use the power of social relationships to gain healthier habits — and motivate others to do the same.
37 Teens are especially responsive to peer influence. At the same time, the reward system in the teen brain becomes extra sensitive. Teens are just learning to explore the social world. Understanding other people’s values and being influenced by them are important parts of socializing.
A research shows that even just having another peer around can change the reward response in the brain and also the risk-taking tendencies of teenagers. Some people seem to be more easily influenced than others and more sensitive to feeling included or excluded by others. 38 But it’s also a time that peer influence can help teens thrive if it gets them more involved with their community or helps them learn behaviors to get along with others.
It’s the quality of friendships — not quantity — that really makes the difference. Friendships you feel you want to let go of may be low quality. 39 High quality friendships provide understanding, support, and recognition of your self-worth. These types of friendships are more steady and satisfying.
Spending time with friends can be especially helpful for people. Noticing that our behavior is influenced by other people, we can be intentional and try to focus on the people who are doing the things we want to get into ourselves. 40
A.Adolescence is such a risky period.
B.That can affect what you choose to do.
C.Peer pressure can sometimes lead to competition.
D.People care about what others think across all different age groups.
E.They are linked to poor academic performance and behavioral issues.
F.Sharing your healthy habits could also make a real difference to others.
G.The number of friends you have determines your level of social influence.

Jessica had always loved cats and desired to have a pet cat of her own. Her parents weren’t sure if she was responsible enough to take good care of it. So they made her a promise, “If you can prove you’re able to care well for our neighbor, Mr Tan’s cat, Fifi, for two weeks, we will get you your own.”
Excitement filled Jessica’s heart. Jessica fed Fifi, took it for walks, and showered it with love and attention. However, misfortune struck on the last day when Fifi rushed through the house and knocked over a shelf, leaving her mother’s treasured vase (花瓶) into pieces.
Jessica was floored. “If mum knows the truth, she will not only criticize me, but she will never get a pet cat for me!” she thought to herself. Suddenly, she came up with an excuse to take the blame (责备) away from herself and rushed back to her room with Fifi.
When her parents returned home, they asked what had happened. Jessica, acting as if she hadn’t known anything about it, stammering (结巴地说), “It wasn’t me. I was in my room, playing with Fifi the whole time. Then I heard a loud crash and when I came out, the vase was already broken. I think the wind blew in through the open window and knocked it over.” Her parents immediately exchanged glances with each other and saw through her lie. They said nothing about the broken vase and went into their bedroom. Jessica let out a huge breath, thinking the worst was over.
However, as Jessica lay in bed that night, her mind replayed the scene over and over again. The weight of her lie pressed down on her, making it impossible to find any peace.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为80个左右;
After a night of struggle, Jessica knew what to do.

M: An 8-year-old from Singapore has become the youngest chess player to beat a grandmaster. Ashwath Kaushik was just 8 years, 6 months and 11 days old when he beat Polish grandmaster Jacek Stopa on February 18th, 2024 in Switzerland. Ashwath broke the previous record, which was only just set in January, when the Serbian player Leonid Ivanovic — then 8 years and 11 months old — became the first player under the age of 9 to beat a grandmaster. Ashwath, who was born in India, moved to Singapore with his family, and now represents Singapore in international chess events. According to The Star, a newspaper in Malaysia, Ashwath started playing chess with his grandparents when he was 4 years old, and after just a couple of months he beat them. He now plays chess for 2 hours a day on weekdays, and 6 to 7 hours a day on weekends. However, he still finds time for other activities like cycling, visiting the zoo with his family and completing jigsaw puzzles. Asked why he likes chess, Ashwath told The Star: “It’s really fun, and it helps my brain get better and smarter because in chess I need a lot of thinking to find the best moves.”

根据第一段“In the early 1900s, French chemist, Edouard Benedictus, invented shatterproof (防碎的) glass by chance. But its significance and relevance didn’t emerge until the car market created the problem for which he had already found the answer. (20世纪初,法国化学家爱德华·本尼迪克特偶然发明了防碎玻璃。但直到汽车市场产生了问题,而他已经找到了答案,这个问题的重要性和相关性才显现出来)”及第二段“Yet, even in cases where chance plays a role, as in Benedictus’s story, the broader question remains: Are such discoveries truly born of luck, or were they somehow “in the air,” waiting for the right person to seize them (然而,即使像本尼迪克图斯的故事中那样,运气也起了作用,一个更广泛的问题仍然存在:这些发现真的是天生的运气,还是“在空中”,等待着合适的人来抓住它们)”可知,第一段提到Benedictus偶然发明防碎玻璃,第二段讨论“运气是否主导发现”。 故选A。
根据第三段“Independently, Charles Darwin and Alfred R. This is an important clue that can help explain why this dynamic also exists in scientific knowledge: There are similar selective pressures and different research groups that compete to come up with the solutions.(查尔斯·达尔文(Charles Darwin)和阿尔弗雷德·华莱士(Alfred R. Wallace)(后者比达尔文晚了15年)各自独立地提出了自然选择进化论,他们都依靠类似的数据。
根据最后一段“The new, little-known scientist, on the other hand, will in one way or another have been able to break free of the chains of established knowledge. (另一方面,新出现的、不知名的科学家将会以这样或那样的方式打破既定知识的枷锁。)”可知,不太知名的科学家可以摆脱僵化的思维方式。故选B。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“In the early 1900s, French chemist, Edouard Benedictus, invented shatterproof (防碎的) glass by chance. (20世纪初,法国化学家爱德华·本尼迪克特偶然发明了防碎玻璃)”,第二段“Such moments of serendipity reveal the unpredictable nature of innovation. (这些偶然发现的时刻揭示了创新不可预测的本质)”,第三段“This occurs because the environment poses similar survival problems to both, namely similar selective pressures. This is an important clue that can help explain why this dynamic also exists in scientific knowledge: There are similar selective pressures and different research groups that compete to come up with the solutions. (这是因为环境给两者带来了相似的生存问题,即相似的选择压力。这是一个重要的线索,可以帮助解释为什么这种动态也存在于科学知识中:有类似的选择压力和不同的研究小组竞争提出解决方案)”,第四段“Yet is it really possible that all discoveries were in the air (然而,真的有可能所有的发现都在空中吗)”及最后一段“And so it will have been possible for them to imagine other worlds. This suggests that it will be innovators, with their prepared minds, who have a better chance of making accidental discoveries, namely that are irregular and unexpected.

根据第一段中“Bird songs and animal calls will interact with orchestral music on an album by Stewart Copeland.(在Stewart Copeland的专辑中,鸟鸣和动物叫声将与管弦乐互动)”和第二段中“Wild Concerto, released on 18 April, is a ‘cooperation between nature and music’.(4月18日发行的Wild Concerto是‘自然与音乐的合作’)”可知,专辑Wild Concerto特点是将自然的声音与音乐完美相结合,故选A。
根据第三段中“Copeland said there was a conservationist theme to the work. ‘Many of these species are endangered and their sounds could vanish in our lifetime. Through the Wild Concerto, their voices will be kept immortalized.’(Copeland说,这个作品的主题是环保主义。‘这些物种中有许多濒临灭绝,它们的声音可能在我们的有生之年消失。通过Wild Concerto,它们的声音将永垂不朽。’)”可知,Copeland的作品主题是环保主义,记录了可能会消失的濒危物种的声音,推知Copeland表达了对濒危物种的担忧,故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据第四段“For six decades, he has captured sounds of the natural world, from rain-forests to deserts — recordings heard in natural history series such as Our Oceans and Blue Planet as well as about 150 films. With a document of almost 100,000 recordings he has been called ‘the David Attenborough of sound’. Copeland is a brilliant talent. He’s combined natural sounds and music seamlessly. This is another way for people to listen to nature.(60年来,他一直在捕捉自然世界的声音,从雨林到沙漠,这些录音在《我们的海洋》和《蓝色星球》等自然历史系列节目以及大约150部电影中都能听到。他拥有近10万份录音文件,被称为‘声音界的David Attenborough’。Copeland是个才华横溢的天才。他把自然的声音和音乐无缝地结合在一起。这是人们聆听自然的另一种方式)”可知,作者提到Copeland捕捉了很多自然界的声音,认为Copeland的专辑是人们聆听自然的另一种方式,推知作者认为Copeland的努力重要、有非凡意义。故选B。
