From prehistoric villages in Scotland to Emperor Qin’s terra-cotta warriors in China, here are some of the most impressive archaeological sites you can explore and puzzle over.
Lascaux Cave Paintings, France
In the region of southwestern France lies the Lascaux cave system, where some of the world’s best-preserved Paleolithic cave paintings can be found. Nearly 20,000 years old, these images and engravings (雕刻) feature animals as well as abstract designs. Since 1963, the site has been off-limits to visitors to prevent worsening. However, a team of scientists have recreated this UNESCO World Heritage Site with advanced technology and you are able to have a specially arranged visit with prehistoric cave experts.
Skara Brae, Scotland
The ancient stone village of Skara Brae stands on a coast in Scotland’s islands, just one of many destinations you’ll visit on this trip to the United Kingdom. Settled about 5,000 years ago, it is also one of the best-preserved Neolithic sites in Europe. The ruins consist of a series of stone homes where nearly everything remains undamaged. This once-developed community of farmers, hunters and craftsmen was mysteriously deserted around 2500 BC.
The City of Tikal, Guatemala
Tikal is home to the ruins of a powerful Maya city that flourished (繁荣) from around AD 300 to 800. Located in the depths of the Guatemalan rainforest, this site was once inhabited by more than 60,000 people and covered an area of at least 47 square miles, making it one of the largest pre-Columbian cities. On this trip, you’ll explore a variety of Tikal’s unearthed structures, such as its palaces, temples and ball courts. But archaeologists still don’t have any clues as to the cause of Tikal’s decline.

At just 20 years old, Nick Griggs from Northern Ireland has become one of Europe’s most promising athletes. The young runner has won two European Under-20 Championship gold medals and now aims to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Like many athletes, Griggs found inspiration from a sporting legend. “Watching Usain Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics changed everything,” he recalled. “I cheered loudly when he won the 100 meters in 9.63 seconds. That moment made me dream of becoming an Olympic medalist.”
Though starting as a sprinter (短跑运动员) and playing multiple sports including football, Griggs discovered his true talent after joining Mid-Ulster Athletics Club at 14. His coach quickly noticed the teenager’s strong discipline (自制力), often arriving first for morning runs and staying late to improve his techniques. Changing to long-distance running proved successful — within two years, he won gold in the 3,000 meters at the 2021 European Under-20 Championships.
His success didn’t stop there. In 2023, he helped Ireland win gold at the European U20 Cross Country Championships and claimed individual bronze (铜牌). Then, just last November, Griggs set a new parkrun world record, completing the 5-km course at Victoria Park in Belfast in 13 minutes and 44 seconds beating the previous record by one second.
Behind these successes lie strict training routines. Griggs runs over 100 kilometers weekly, combining track workouts with hill training. “Some days I feel exhausted,” he admits, “but thinking of standing on the Olympic platform keeps me going.” His teammates describe him as “the most focused athlete in the gym”, always completing extra main exercises after regular sessions.
With the 2028 Olympics approaching, when he’ll be 23, experts believe Griggs’s steady progress could make him as a strong medal hope. “Every race teaches me something new,” says the determined runner. “My Olympic dream that started in 2012 continues to guide my training.”
24. What inspired Griggs’s Olympic dream
A. Advice from his coach. B. His parents’ being athletes.
C. Winning a school competition. D. A famous sprinter’s Olympic victory.
25. Which of the following is the correct order of the events in Griggs’s life
a. Griggs claimed individual bronze.
b. Griggs won gold in the 3,000 meters.

Cultural differences do exist, but we can really use them to tighten our relationship as human beings, because there is strength in diversity. We are going to expose some interesting cultural differences around the world. Read these cultures to help you travel out of your homeland!
In Greece, spitting (吐痰) at weddings is believed to drive away devils (恶魔) . Funny as it sounds, this cultural tradition is an important practice. What is more shocking, this spitting is focused on the bride. It is regarded as a good luck to bless the couple. However, things have been changed in some parts of Greece these days. Wedding guests just face the bride and make sounds and impressions that show they are spitting on her—without actually spitting.
Everybody knows Thai people are so friendly, but their culture demands that you never point your feet at anyone of any statue, especially that of the Buddha. In addition, they also consider the head to be more important than other parts of the body. This is why it is disrespectful to touch another person’s head in Thailand. It is the same with statues. If you see the Buddha statue, avoid touching its head as well.
Russians are very hospitable. In their culture, food is a serious business. Lunch is the most important and heaviest meal. If you get invited by your Russian friend for a meal, don’t ever refuse it—they find it impolite. You might want to skip your own meals to leave space in your stomach for the food you will eat in Russian gatherings. This is a very interesting cultural difference between Russia and other nations.
With limited knowledge about cultures outside your own, you won’t be able to really flow with a foreigner. Know more about the cultural differences around the world and make your life easier.
28. Why do the Greek spit at weddings
A. To add fun to the wedding.
B. To drive away bad luck and bless the couple.
C. To celebrate the new wedding.
D. To express their dissatisfaction with the couple.
29. What should be avoided if you are in Thailand
A. Eating too much food for a meal.
B. Touching your head in your home.
C. Pointing your feet at the statue of the Buddha.
D. Refusing your friends’ invitations.
30. What does the underlined word “hospitable” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Famous. B. Welcoming. C. Active. D. Clever.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Beautiful Tourist Attractions in the World
B. The Most Delicious Food in Different Countries
C. Interesting Wedding Traditions in Asian Nations
D. Surprising Cultural Differences around the World

When Deirdre Loughridge first began teaching classes on music technology in 2012, there was a lot of talk about how computers were “dehumanizing” music. The general thought among her students was that computers could not make music.
But over the years, Loughridge noticed a shift in this attitude. “When I started teaching, it was very common to be surprised and disturbed by the idea that a computer could make music,” she said. “But five years later, that started to seem like a much more common idea for students.”
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), there’s been an increasing number of conversations surrounding AI and art, and whether the work we’re enjoying is from a human or a machine. But the answer, Loughridge says, is not always so simple, at least not when it comes to music. After all, a computer-generated piece in the style of Chopin was created by human programmers and Chopin composed with a piano that is also sort of a machine.
This is the example Loughridge uses to open her upcoming book Sounding Human. The December release was inspired by the shift in attitude Loughridge has seen over her career, and explores how the human and machine have been seen as both oppositional (对抗的) forces and working pairs.
“The book is trying to get out of this division of human and machine to explore how they relate to each other, and what it opens up for us to think about those relationships rather than get stuck on a human or machine question,” she said.
In the book, Loughridge explores this debate and how it played out from 1740 until 2020, starting with the emergence of an android-like (像人形机器人的) device that plays the flute (长笛) and ending with musicians experimenting with machine learning.
The subject matter is particularly poignant (引人深思的) as there’s more debate around AI. The conversation has evolved even over the last year, Loughridge said, with more people viewing the use of this type of technology as either “good” or “bad”. But looking through the history in her book can provide greater context to these conversations.
32. Why does the author mention the example of Chopin
A. To explain what machine-generated art is.
B. To introduce the history of music composition.
C. To praise his skills of using pianos to create music.
D. To show the interaction between the human and machine.
33. What inspired Deirdre Loughridge to write Sounding Human
A. The increasing debate about AI and art.
B. The rise of AI in music.
C. Students’ changing views on computerized music.
D. Her shifted opinion on AI and art during her career.
34. What is the main focus of Sounding Human
A. Debating the morality of AI in music.
B. Analyzing the compositions of Chopin.
C. Exploring the evolution of music technology.
D. Breaking the boundary between human and technology.
35 Which of the following can best describe many people’s viewpoints on AI according to Loughridge
A. Unchanged. B. One-sided.
C. Old-fashioned. D. Refreshing.

It was a normal Wednesday. I had just got home from work and was getting dinner ready when suddenly I felt there was something wrong with my grandmother. I knew that I needed to call her immediately.
I called her number quickly and waited with a growing sense of worry as she did not answer. That was extremely unusual because she always answered and her phone was just put by her side. “Pick up! Pick up!” I called again and again, still getting no answer. I began to feel more worried. She had no car, lived alone and could only take short walks around her neighborhood.
I knew she needed help. I didn’t know how I knew; I just did. I called my sister and father, telling them what I thought and that we needed to drive one state over to my grandmother’s house to check on her.
I picked them up and headed for my grandmother’s house. “She’s probably at church,” my father kept saying. “Maybe she’s sleeping,” my sister cut in, but I just drove the car faster. Two hours later, we pulled into my grandmother’s driveway.
Her door was completely closed and the curtains (窗帘)were drawn. No light could be seen inside. My sister pressed the doorbell, but there was no answer inside. Sensing I was right at that moment, my father began to break the locked front door while I was checking the back door. However, it was locked too. Finally, we called a worker to open the door.

Good morning, everyone. I’m Li Hua, chairman of the Students’ Union. I’m here to introduce Liu Yang, a Chinese female astronaut to you.
Born in Henan Province on October 6, 1978, Liu Yang is an outstanding woman devoted to space exploration. In 2012, she became the first Chinese female astronaut to go to space. Two years later, she was admitted to Tsinghua University, where she obtained a doctor’s degree in law. In 2022, the space heroine lifted off again on the Shenzhou-14 Spaceship, undertaking new missions to construct a space station.
Liu Yang has always impressed me with her perseverance and passion. I hope my introduction will be helpful to you and look forward to exchanging ideas with you.
Thank you for listening!

【答案】My poor grandmother lay on the floor of her dining room, her shoulder clearly broken. “You got my call ” she asked in a low voice. Then she began to cry. I held her hand and lay on the floor beside her when my sister called 911 and my father started to clean up the broken glass. My grandmother was unable to tell me what had happened, but I guessed it was caused by an overturned chair. I felt guilty for leaving her lying painfully there for hours, so I held her hand tightly until the doctors arrived.
My grandmother was rushed to hospital and got some treatment. I sat by my grandmother’s bedside, knowing she was in good condition but feeling terrible over the whole situation. I didn’t want to leave her. She took my hand and said, “I was calling you to come over and help me. Thank God you picked up.” I stared at her blankly for a moment and secretly took out my phone to check. There were no incoming calls from her, only outgoing. I knew it was a call from my grandmother’s heart and I heard that.
