In 2019, I had a great life on paper: a stable job, boyfriend, and a basement apartment in Washington, DC. But I wanted more. At age 30, I chose to be a digital nomad(游民), sold everything, and bought a one-way ticket to Bali to travel. I couldn’t imagine my future without it.
After Bali, I went to Southeast Asiathrough Java, then Singapore. I met my mom in Malaysia and went with her to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Then I continued alone to Thailand and Vietnam. I learned to dive in Koh Lanta, saw the largest Buddhist temple in the world at sunrise in central Java, and did a six-day motorcycle trip through Ha Giang. After Vietnam, I had to spend the next couple of years back and forth to the US. In 2022 came my Latin America travels: Puerto Rico, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and Guatemala. I went paragliding in Bogotá, hiked Guatemala’s Acatenango to watch the erupting Fuego Volcano, and celebrated Dia de los Muertos in Oaxaca. Being a bilingual(双语)Latina, I felt at home and easily connected with locals.
After that, I found a cheap flight from Mexico City to Rome. I finally got why everyone loves the food, people, and lifestyle in Italy. In addition to Italy, I went to Greece, Spain, France, Albania, and Romania. I celebrated my 35th birthday with friends who flew from all over the world to sail with me in Paros. Some people feel it’s difficult to befriend Europeans as an outsider. But I largely found people who were warm, kind, happy to help, and indulgent with me practicing their language.
In a way, being a digital nomad is my extreme solution to work-life balance. I’ve had more once-in-a-lifetime experiences in the last five years than I would have in a lifetime if I’d stayed at my 9-to-5 in DC. With great excitement, I am anticipating seeing who I’ll meet and what I’ll learn.
24. Why did the author decide to give up her stable life
A. She desired to experience the world outside.
B. She wanted to make a fortune by travelling.
C. She was influenced by her job and boyfriend.
D. She felt unhappy with her basement apartment.
25. What does the author’s experience in Latin America demonstrate
A. She found the region less adventurous. B. She struggled to adapt to local customs.
C. She felt a strong sense of belonging there. D. She kept fighting against language barriers.
26. What does the underlined word “indulgent” in Para.3 probably mean
A. Angry. B. Satisfied. C. Patient. D. Strict.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To encourage others to be digital nomads. B. To share her personal travel experiences.
C. To criticize traditional work-life balance. D. To promote specific travel destinations.

Global sea levels continue to rise despite efforts that cities around the world are making to reduce the effects of climate change and their carbon emissions. One firm, however, is hoping to battle the effects of climate change Driven by alarming estimates that 36.6 million people in Asian coastal cities like Mumbai could face flooding by 2070, Luca Curci Architects, based in Venice, Italy, has released Floating City — a design that would allow urban-areas to rise with the waters while making use of renewable energies to reduce their own carbon emissions.
Each 25-acre unit houses 50,000 residents on interconnected platforms, with potential expansion for 200,000 and buildings are capped at 90 meters tall for stability. “Structures must be flexible like bamboo in wind to resist waves,” explains architect Curci. To achieve this, seawater resistant materials are given priority to, while hollow sections in platforms help them float. Meanwhile, movable bridges are constructed to link these “water neighborhoods” to mainland transport systems.
The project team also pictures a mix of renewable energy sources obtaining power from wind, water, and the sun to power the city. During extreme weather, platforms automatically separate and regroup using intelligence algorithms(算法)inspired by how fish schools avoid hunters.
Compared to building artificial islands, this method preserves 68% more marine(海洋)life and uses surfaces that absorb rainwater to reduce flooding risks. However, challenges still exist. Seawater slowly harms materials, requiring repair every four months, and emergency plans for extreme weather are still under way. “This isn’t about abandoning coasts but evolving with them,” notes designer Tim Fu.
While some question long-term possibility, the design redefines urban resilience. Unlike rigid sea walls, these dynamic structures harmonize with oceanic rhythms, offering a blueprint for climate solutions. “Cities must learn to dance with the waves,” Curci says. This philosophy could transform humanity’s relationship with rising seas, turning threats into sustainable opportunities.
28. What drove Luca Curci Architects to come up with a new design
A. Energy crisis. B. Potential disasters.
C. Tourism expansion. D. Overcrowded cities.
29. Which of the following best describes Luca Curci’s design
A. Fictional and renewable. B. Adaptable and innovative. AB
C. Eco-friendly and immovable. D. Wave-resistant and conventional.
30. What is the limitation Luca Curci’s design
A. Threatening marine life. B. Lacking clean energy options.
C. Requiring regular maintenance. D. Ignoring coastal water changes.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Ocean Protection: Life under Threat B. Rising with the Tides: Floating Cities.
Connecting to the Future: Eco Solutions D. Coastal Design: Inspiration from Bamboo
D
The United States has the largest prison population in the world and the highest rate of imprisonment(囚禁)per person. In 2016, 2.3 million people were imprisoned, despite a massive decline in both violent and property crimes. These alarming statistics provide insight into why crime regulation and mass imprisonment are such hot topics today, and many scholars, lawyers, and policymakers have explored theories and strategies to ensure public safety, with the broken windows theory being one of the most influential.
The broken windows theory states that visible signs of disorder, such as broken windows, create an urban environment that promotes even more crime and disorder. As such, policing these minor issues will help create a safe society where crime rates, including violent crime rates, are low.
A major assumption that the broken windows theory makes is that an environment’s landscape communicates to its residents in some way. A broken window, for instance, symbolizes a defenseless, disorderly community that cannot handle crime — opening the doors to all kinds of unwanted activity to occur. In such environments, residents no longer see their communities as safe spaces and will avoid spending time in public spaces to protect themselves from potential attacks. Additionally, the neglect of these broken windows also symbolizes a lack of informal social control — actions that regulate behavior, such as following social norms and intervening as a bystander when a crime is committed. Without this control, individuals would be more likely to engage in criminal behavior, both violent and nonviolent, in this type of area.
People have different approaches to the application of the broken windows theory. Supporters hold that informal social control(such as community involvement) and formal social control (such as police intervention) are crucial for effectively regulating crime. However, critics point out that there is no clear causal relationship between lack of order and crime. Additionally, over-policing minor offenses can unfairly impact marginalized(边缘化的)communities.
Despite ongoing debates, cities such as Ferguson, Missouri are heavily policed and fine offenders heavily for broken window types of crimes. Crime regulation is not easy, but the broken windows theory provides an approach to reducing offenses and maintaining order in society.
32. What do the statistics in paragraph 1 demonstrate
A. The decline in crimes. B. The root of imprisonment.
C. The strategy to ensure safety. D. The need to control crimes.
33. What is the focus of broken windows policing
A. Fighting serious crimes. B. Handling minor disorder.
C. Repairing broken windows. D. Promoting community unity.
34. Which of the following can best illustrate the broken windows theory
A. broken windows — fearful residents — decreased informal social control — increased criminal activities
B. broken windows — heavy police presence — reduced visible disorder —less community engagement
C. broken windows —intervention from bystanders — over-policing minor offenses —fewer community activities
D. broken windows — increased crimes —introduction of formal laws — worsening lawlessnes
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the broken windows theory
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. They had not paid the rent for several months. Worse still, their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food.
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s shoes, because they took different courses and their school schedules were different. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of the race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, another runner collided(碰撞)with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

第四部分
Embracing Senior Year
Senior year, while a gateway to future dreams, poses significant challenges. Academically, the overwhelming workload and frequent exams can drain motivation. Time management becomes critical as nor studying, extracurricular, and personal life compete for attention. Additionally, anxiety about college admissions and future uncertainties often clouds students' minds.
To navigate this, I prioritize structured planning. Breaking tasks into daily goals and adhering to a study timetable ensures steady progress. Physical exercise, like jogging, helps relieve stress and boosts focus. Moreover, open conversations with friends and mentors provide emotional support and fresh perspectives.
Ultimately, embracing challenges with resilience and self-awareness allows me to thrive, not merely survive. Every setback becomes a stepping stone, and every effort fuels growth. Senior year, though demanding, is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

A possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Ali looked up, seeing the other boys racing ahead. His scraped knees hurt badly, but Zahra's trusting eyes filled his mind. I promised her! Desperately clenching his teeth, he pushed up, ignored the pain, and ran. His chest burned and legs ached terribly, but he focused only on third place. Passing tired runners, he used every bit of strength for a final, painful dash just before the finish line. He got third place! Holding the prize shoes close at the ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved. He'd won them for Zahra. Paragraph 2:
Filled with delight. Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the thrilling news. On his arrival, Ali was greeted by Zahra, who was waiting outside the house for long. She was really nervous about whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” He took the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali, “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and sister hugged tightly together.
