Suffering from cancer is a shock, no matter whether a person has a family history or not, the possibility is always in the back of one’s mind. That’s exactly the experience Sheri Richie had when she received the news that she had breast cancer.
“After the examination, they both looked sad and you could tell they were trying to figure out how to tell me. I already knew then. I just knew what she was going to say,” she said.
Yet, instead of being terrified, she took immediate action, focusing on a plan to beat the disease. At first, Sheri was anxious about her treatment, fearing her doctors might not be able to help, but her medical team’s positivity saved her.
As a natural planner, Sheri structured her approach by staying positive, strictly following medical advice, and rejecting alternative treatments like skipping chemotherapy (化疗). She also prepared for difficult moments by carrying out strategies to support her mental and emotional wellbeing. No one’s cancer journey looks the same. For Sheri, the most troubling side effects of her treatment were unbelievably thin and sensitive facial skin, diarrhea (腹泻), which led to extreme weight loss, and hair loss, which came on quickly. Despite these serious side effects, Sheri still tried to remain positive.
Another significant struggle Sheri faced throughout her treatment was nutrition. Thankfully she had the help and guidance of a nutritionist. She adapted her diet, following the 80-20 rule — eating healthily 80% of the time while allowing for some treats. She cut out certain foods at first.
Sheri also found healthy and enjoyable options via the Yuka app, which helps assess (评估) food choices by scanning labels. This app provided much-needed guidance and prevented her from feeling stressed or discouraged about her diet. Today, Sheri is cancer-free but continues to receive treatment. Thankfully, this treatment doesn’t have negative side effects.

Scientists inspired by the octopus’s (章鱼) nervous system have developed a robot that can decide how to move or grasp (抓紧) objects by sensing its environment. The team from the University of Bristol’s Faculty of Science and Engineering designed a simple yet smart robot which uses fluid flows of air or water to adjust suction (吸力) and movement as octopuses do with multiple arms.
The study, published today in the journal Science Robotics, shows how a soft robot can use suction flow not just to stick to things, but also to sense its environment and control its own actions—just like an octopus. A single suction system can make robot catch delicate (微小的) items, sense whether it’s touching air, water, or a rough surface, and even predict how hard something is pulling on it—all at once, without needing a central computer.
Lead author Tianqi Yue explained, “Last year, we developed an artificial suction cup that mimicked how octopuses stick to rocks using soft materials and water sealing. This research builds on that work, from using a suction cup like an octopus sucker to connect to objects to using ‘suction intelligence’.”
The robot operates on two levels: by combining suction flow with local fluidic circuits, soft robots can achieve octopus-like low-level intelligence, such as gently grasping fragile objects. By sensing the pressure response from a suction cup, robots can achieve high-level awareness, including discovery of contact, classification of environment and surface texture, and predicting interactive pulling forces.
This simple and low-cost suction intelligence could lead to a new generation of soft robots that are safer, smarter, and more energy-efficient. The team is currently working on making the system smaller and stronger for real-world use. They also aim to combine it with smart materials and AI to improve its ability to adapt and decision-making in complex environments.

Axolotls — the cute and charming creatures made famous by the video game “Minecraft” — are in a free fall. Pollution, modern farming, and the introduction of invasive (入侵的) fish that hunt and eat the endangered species have reduced their habitat to the waterways of a single lake in Mexico. But a new study is offering a flash of hope: axolotls raised by people can survive in the wild, Justine McDaniel reported for The Washington Post.
“This is a huge step because in conservation programs when you have animals raised by people and you take them back to the wild... there are a lot of deaths,” Alejandra Ramos, the study’s lead author said.
Axolotls have long been bred in labs and are popular pets, but increasing their numbers in the wild has proven to be a much greater challenge. The study stuck radio transmitters onto 18 axolotls that would allow them to be tracked, then set free eight into Mexico City’s Lake Xochimilco and 10 into a man-made wetland. At least twice a day for 40 days, researchers visited both sites to collect data.
The researchers found that the axolotls introduced to a man-made pond also survived, a promising finding for the potential of artificial wetlands to aid axolotl conservation, the study authors said.
That finding matters if their habitat doesn’t recover or if climate change worsens, Esther Quintero, a Conservation International-Mexico biologist said.
Conservation International is supporting a project in Lake Xochimilco to bring back the axolotl’s natural habitat by returning to ancestral farming practices. By supporting farmers’ change to pesticide-free (无农药的) farming and helping put in biofilters (生物过滤器) to clean the water, the project aims to restore these waters so axolotls can live well in the future.
“Saving the axolotl goes beyond liking this creature that is really lovely,” Quintero said. “There is no future for any species without its habitat.”

To promote Chinese traditions, our school organized an event named “Inheriting Chinese Traditions Starts with Me” last Saturday in the school hall.
A series of engaging activities were arranged. Experts were invited to give lectures on traditional festivals and customs, broadening our knowledge. We also watched wonderful Beijing Opera performances, which gave us a visual feast. What’s more, students actively participated in making traditional handicrafts like paper cutting.
The event was a huge hit. Students were excited to experience Chinese traditions firsthand and became more interested in them. Many said they would spread these traditions in their future daily lives.
