Hiking, a form of exercise older than exercise itself, is so hot right now. From 2018 to 2021, the number of Americans hitting the trails ballooned from around 48 million to 59 million, according to the nonprofit Outdoor Foundation.
Hiking offers all the cardiovascular (心血管的) benefits of walking, but the uneven terrain (地势) does more to strengthen the leg and core muscles, which in turn boosts balance and stability, said Alicia Filley, a physical therapist. It also generally burns more calories than walking.
Spending time in nature and having experiences that inspire awe can also lower stress and anxiety. One small 2015 study found that people who walked in nature for 90 minutes were less likely to negatively ruminate (沉思) about themselves—a risk factor for depression—than those who walked in an urban environment.
Hiking does carry some risks, but taking a few simple safety precautions (预防措施) can help to ensure you get back safe and sound. If you’re a new hiker, go with a friend or a local group until you’re more experienced, Wesley Trimble said, a spokesman for American Hiking Society. And leave the selfie stick at home.
Make a habit of telling at least one person where you’ll be and of checking in afterward. Leave a note on your car dashboard (仪表板) with your route so if you’re not back by sunset, rangers will know where to find you.
Finally, to avoid injury, don’t push yourself too hard or fast through more challenging trails. Remember: The point is to be able to see the views and smell the flowers.
“Slow down, take in the scenery, listen to the birds,” said Lee Welton, a personal trainer, who prepares clients for long hikes. “Just be present in nature.”
1.What is mainly talked about in paragraphs 2 and 3
A. The boom in hiking. B. The growing number of hikers.
C. The benefits of hiking. D. A form of exercise.
2.Why does the author mention “One small 2015 study” in paragraph 3
A. To highlight its importance. B. To prove his point.
C. To advocate hitting the trails. D. To discourage city walk.
3.Why should a hiker leave a note with his route on the car dashboard
A. To remind himself to admire the sunset. B. To guarantee his enjoyment of the hike.
C. To get himself located by rangers. D. To ensure his return at the appointed time.
4.What is hikers’ first priority according to the last two paragraphs
A. Keeping away from rough trails. B. Enjoying natural scenery.
C. Relaxing while contacting nature. D. Breathing the fragrance of flowers.

由第二段中的“Hiking offers all the cardiovascular (心血管的) benefits of walking” “boosts balance and stability”和第三段中的“can also lower stress and anxiety”可知,第二、三段主要说明的是徒步的益处,故C项正确。
由倒数第二段中的“The point is to be able to see the views and smell the flowers.”

1.B 根据上文的“in many ways they are the unsung heroes of the home”和下文的“but studies have shown that they can promote people’s wellbeing by improving their mood (心情), reducing stress and helping their memory”可知,设空处应指出室内植物是无名英雄的一个原因。结合选项并根据空后的but可知,该句是not only ... but (also) ...
2.D 根据上文的“Many of these species (物种) are not ideally suited to growing outside in the UK, especially in the winter.” D项中的they代指前文的Many of these species,且D项中的“they grow better inside”与前文的“not ideally suited to growing outside”呼应, “where it is warmer”与前文的“especially in the winter”呼应。
Why are indoor plants good for you 根据下文的“plants around the house can really lift your mood”和“indoor plants can improve creativity, focus and memory”以及“pot plants can clean the air around them by removing harmful gases”可知,本段列举了在室内种植植物的很多具体好处,所以设空处应总结指出,种植室内植物有很多好处。
Which plants can you grow 和下文的“It can bring a new interest and focus into people’s lives and help to make the link between home and nature.”
