Dear Lucy,
Knowing that you are quite interested in sinology. It will be my great pleasure if my following suggestions are constructive for you to study it.
Recently several hot TV programs have enjoyed great popularity among Chinese, such as Chinese Poetry Competition and The Reader, which will be of great benefit to foreign learners. Apart from watching these programs, I also strongly advise you to read some historical books so as to gain a better understanding of China. Moreover, there is no better way to learn the local culture and customs than accepting my invitation to come to China in person.
I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

As I was walking back to class, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Anna standing behind me, holding out the piece of paper. It was a drawing of us, holding hands and smiling. Underneath it, she had written: “I’ m sorry. Can we be friends again ” I looked at her, and saw the sincerity in her eyes. I got emotional and hugged her. I said: “I’ m sorry too. Of course we can be friends again.”
Anna and I both smiled and cried. We forgave each other, and promised to never fight again. We realized that our friendship was more important than any argument. We walked back to class, feeling happy and relieved. I had almost lost my best friend, but I had found her again. We both had learned a valuable lesson that even best friends need to communicate promptly to clear up misunderstandings. I will never forget that day, and I will always value our friendship.

Text 10(182
M: It has been only six months since I arrived in New York, but I can tell you already that I don’t enjoy living here. The thing that bothers me the most about this place is the high cost of living. I realize that things are typically more expensive in major cities, but I was shocked to find just how difficult it was to make ends meet here. With the cost of rent, food, and public transportation being so high, it’s almost impossible to save money. I wouldn’t mind the high prices so much if the people here were friendlier. Instead, New Yorkers seem cold and impatient. In fact, I’ve made few friends during my time in New York. Then, there’s the noise. In the middle of the night, you can often hear fire trucks and ambulances blaring. Last night I stayed awake in bed, just because my neighbor was having a party. These are just my personal experiences, and I know many people love living in New York. Therefore, I’ll try to keep an open mind, and hopefully I’ll get used to living here.
2. treat sb to sth I’m going to treat myself to a new pair of shoes.
3. in that case
Many families struggle to make ends meet.
根据素材的最后一句话“Therefore, I’ll try to keep an open mind, and hopefully I’ll get used to living here.”

If you live near a deep forest, you might have come across some wildlife animals hiding in your backyard, but nothing beats the surprise this woman got when she found three baby deer hiding in her house to wait out the storm.
The woman then posted several photos of the baby deer taking refuge (避难) in one of her rooms on her Imgur account “Amscolie”. She wrote that it was a very stormy day and a rainstorm was coming so she left her back door open just in case some animals wanted to take refuge in her house. In the meantime, she went out in the storm to check whether there were any animals that were stuck in the bad weather, especially a number of deer. However, she could not find any of them so she went back to her home.
Surprisingly, she found that the deer had already made their way inside her house!
Like many other animals, deer too can predict stormy weather and know when it is best to find a shelter from the dangerous weather. As the back door was opened, she did not notice when the deer entered her house. The three lovely baby deer made their way inside but there was no sight of their parents. The woman did try to find if there was any deer nearby her house but to no avail. The woman thought that the baby deer might have lost their parents so she welcomed them with open arms.
“I raise orphaned (孤儿的) wildlife. Recently, the back door was open as a storm was coming. The deer were nowhere to be found. I went inside, only to see them next to an end table in the living room. Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is about twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not beat on the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries related to running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first turn to a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
28.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes
A.They must run long distances. B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow specific rules. D.They are good at swinging their legs.
29.What advantage does race walking have over running
A.It’s more popular at the Olympics. B.It’s less challenging physically.
C.It’s more effective in body building. D.It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
30.What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking
A.Getting experts’ opinions. B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach. D.Doing regular exercises.
31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking
A.Doubtful. B.Objective(客观的).
C.Favorable. D.Critical(批判的).
D
Most environmental pollution on Earth comes from humans and their inventions, such as cars or plastic. Today, car emissions (排放物) are a major source of air pollution leading to climate change, and plastics fill our ocean, creating a significant health issue to marine (海洋的) animals.
And what about the electric light, thought to be one of the greatest human inventions of all time Electric light can be a beautiful thing, guiding us home when the sun goes down, keeping us safe and making our homes bright. However, like carbon dioxide emissions and plastic, too much of a good thing has started to affect the environment. Light pollution, the improper use of outdoor light, is affecting human health, wildlife behavior and our ability to observe stars.
Light pollution is a global issue. This became obvious when the World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness, a computer-generated map based on thousands of satellite photos, was published in 2016. Available online for viewing, the map shows how and where our globe is lit up at night. Vast areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia are glowing (发光) with light, while only the most remote regions on Earth (Greenland, Central African Republic and Niue) are in total darkness. Some of the most light-polluted countries in the world are Singapore, Qatar, and Kuwait.
Sky glow is the brightening of the night sky, mostly over cities, due to the electric lights of cars, streetlamps, offices, factories, outdoor advertising, and buildings, turning night into day for people who work and play long after sunset.
People living in cities with high levels of sky glow have a hard time seeing more than a handful of stars at night. Astronomers are particularly concerned with sky glow pollution as it reduces their ability to view stars.
More than 80 percent of the world’s population, and 99 percent of Americans and Europeans, live under sky glow.
32.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.The use of outdoor light must be forbidden.
B.Electric light is the greatest human invention.
C.Electric light is the main factor to keep us safe.
D.Electric light has both advantages and disadvantages.
33.Which of the following places is least affected by sky glow
A.Qatar. B.Niue. C.Kuwait. D.Singapore.
34.Why do astronomers especially complain about sky glow
A.Sky glow costs too much.
B.Sky glow has a bad effect on their sleep.
C.Sky glow affects their viewing stars.
D.Sky glow wastes too much electricity.
35.What is the passage mainly about
A.Light pollution B.Plastic pollution
C.Star pollution D.Air pollution

I still remember the day I almost lost my best friend Anna.
It was a sunny afternoon in June, and we were having a picnic at the park. We had been friends since childhood, and we shared everything: our hobbies, our dreams, our secrets. We were inseparable.
But that day, something changed. We got into a heated argument over a unimportant matter. I don’t even remember what it was about, but I know it was something silly and unimportant. Maybe it was about who ate the last sandwich. It doesn’t matter now.
What matters is that we both said things we didn’t mean. We both raised our voices and hurt each other’s feelings. We both acted stubbornly and refused to apologize. We both stormed off in different directions, leaving behind our picnic basket and our friendship.
I spent the rest of the day alone in my room. I tried to distract myself with music, but nothing could fill the emptiness in my heart. I wanted to talk to Anna and I wanted to say I was sorry. But I didn’t know how to do that. I didn’t know if she would forgive me, or if she even wanted to see me again.
The next day, I went to school with a heavy heart. I avoided eye contact with Anna, and sat as far away from her as possible. I pretended that I didn’t care, but I did. I cared a lot.
During the break, I saw her sitting on a bench, looking lonely and sad. She was holding a piece of paper in her hand, and tears were rolling down her face. I felt a wave of regret. I wanted to go to her. But I didn’t have the courage.
I turned around and walked away. I thought that was the end of our friendship, and that we would never speak to each other again.
But I was wrong.

1.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes
A.They must run long distances. B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow specific rules. D.They are good at swinging their legs.
2.What advantage does race walking have over running
A.It’s more popular at the Olympics. B.It’s less challenging physically.
C.It’s more effective in body building. D.It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
3.What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking
A.Getting experts’ opinions. B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach. D.Doing regular exercises.
4.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking
A.Doubtful. B.Objective.
C.Favorable. D.Critical.
1.C 2.D 3.A 4.B
根据第二段中“But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity (但这项运动的规则要求,竞走运动员的膝盖在腿摆动的大部分时间内保持笔直,一只脚始终保持与地面接触。正是这种奇怪的形式使竞走成为一项如此有吸引力的活动)”可知,竞走者是受限制的运动员,是因为他们必须遵守特定的规则。故选C项。
2.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“As a result, she says, some of the injuries related to running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. (因此,她说,一些与跑步有关的损伤,比如跑步者的膝盖,在竞走者中并不常见)”可知,相比于跑步,竞走的优势是不太可能导致膝盖受伤。故选D项。
3.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first turn to a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. (她说,事实上,任何想尝试竞走的人都应该首先向教练或有经验的运动员学习适当的技术)”可知,Norberg博士建议尝试竞走的人征求专家的意见。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem. (研究表明,竞走与跑步有许多相同的健身好处,而且很可能减少受伤。然而,它也有自己的问题)”可知,作者既提到了竞走的健身益处和减少运动伤害的优势,也指出了其独特的运动形式可能带来的问题,如对脚踝和髋部的压力。因此,作者是以一种中立的方式呈现了竞走的相关信息,其态度是客观的。A. 怀疑的;C. 赞许的;D. 故选B项。

However, like carbon dioxide emissions and plastic, too much of a good thing has started to impact the environment. Light pollution, the inappropriate use of outdoor light, is affecting human health, wildlife behavior and our ability to observe stars.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Light pollution B.Plastic pollution C.Star pollution D.Air pollution
