(2025·北京丰台模拟)
Influenced by her family,Xu started to learn the craft of making Chinese knots at home, but didn't expect the pastime to change her life at first.Xu became a city-level inheritor of this provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in 2009,and has been devoted to developing the craft since then.
As a fan of photography, she often took photos of dragonflies, butterflies and flowers around a lake not far from her home, then she made knots resembling them, and posted the photos on a website. That attracted the attention of some people.
As an advertising design major, she makes innovated knots based on her knowledge of design, and can use various threads to make small, exquisite designs. She has created many series of works based on traditional Chinese culture, such as festivals, tea and Beijing Opera characters.
“Showing Chinese culture through traditional Chinese crafts—that is the original aspiration for me as an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage,” says Xu.She has made more than 3,000 designs, and even opened two offline branch stores. Her products include decorations of different sizes that can be put on walls, car ornaments, cell phone chains and jewelry.“I believe our intangible cultural heritage can be better developed and passed down when it meets people's needs in daily life,” says Xu.
Chen,an online follower, has been teaching how to make knots in the United Arab Emirates.“Influenced by Xu's work,I learn the craft to cultivate my temperament, and I also teach children to better understand Chinese culture,” says Chen.“Chinese culture is popular in the UAE,and I often make some knots with Chinese elements for local people as gifts.”
Xu has also been generous in helping others. She taught this art to workers who lost their jobs in her hometown, allowing them to master a skill from which they could earn an income.Students and people with disabilities were also beneficiaries.Indeed, more than 20 people with disabilities now actually work for her.
Despite the success of her career,Xu says working on the craft has benefited her more in a spiritual way.“Tying knots requires concentration, and you must not be distracted during the process. It has trained me to deal with matters in a calm, peaceful and rational way,” says Xu.“I believe the life of one person is short, and you have the right to decide how to spend it.”

(2024·湖南永州模拟)
Who first proposed the holiday for workers It's not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labor Day title.
Some records show that in 1882,Peter J.McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a “general holiday for the laboring classes”.But many believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter J.McGuire, founded the holiday.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday,September 5,1882,in New York City,in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later,on September 5,1883.By 1894,23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28,1894,President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades (游行),picnics and parties—festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit “the strength and spirits of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.
Speeches by important official men and women were introduced later,as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday.Still later,by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909,the Sunday before Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to (致力于) the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
American labor has raised the nation's standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.
8.What can we know from paragraph 2?( )
A.People's views about the founder of Labor Day vary.
B.The author considered Matthew Maguire the founder.
C.Peter J.McGuire wanted to set a few days for a holiday.
D.Labor Day was originally set up for American machinists.
9.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?( )
A.The real meaning of Labor Day.
B.The development of Labor Day.
C.The reason of setting Labor Day.
D.People's emphasis on Labor Day.
10.What does the underlined word “festivities” in paragraph 4 mean?( )
A.Manners. B.Approaches.
C.Rewards. D.Celebrations.
11.Which of the following does the author agree with?( )
A.It is known that America develops very fast.
B.The original meaning of Labor Day changes.
C.It is worthwhile to set a day for the laborer.
D.The labor movement makes the life unsteady.

C 篇(限时7分钟)

It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals—although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner.A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis,a West Virginia woman who held “Mothers' Work Days” to promote health and hygiene (卫生) at home and in the workplace.During the Civil War,Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis' work inspired another 19th-century woman,Julia Ward Howe.In 1870 Howe published her “Mother's Day Proclamation”, which envisioned (设想) the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace.Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis' daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died,in May 1905,Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day.Two years later,President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy.By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating.“I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.

It seems a bit strange to imagine ancient Egyptians celebrating their birthdays with layered cakes topped with lighted candles. 1
The first birthday cakes were nothing of what they are today and weren't even called birthday cakes. 2 At that time only they could afford to celebrate with something sweet. That is how cakes became associated with special occasions.
Ancient Egyptians are credited with“inventing”the birthday celebration. And ancient Greeks borrowed the tradition but rightfully realized that a dessert would make the celebration all the more meaningful. So they baked moon-shaped cakes to offer up to the moon. 3
It wasn't just the ancient Egyptians and Greeks who celebrated with sweet cakes. 4 And it's believed that the original birthday cake came from them.Rather than just celebrating birthdays, though, ancient Rome was known for celebrating all things with a cake including weddings, but there was an exception—the birthdays celebrated were only for men who were citizens, and they had to be famous.
Modern birthday parties are said to get their roots from the 18th-century German celebration. On the morning of a child's birthday,he or she would receive a cake with lighted candles that added up to the child's age plus one. 5 The birthday child would make a wish, try to blow out all the candles in one breath, and dig in.
A.Ancient Romans also had their traditions.
B.Rather, they were symbolic of the noble class.

I'll call him Pete because I didn't take the time to ask his name.A nameless hero who found his way into my heart.
I had taken Bob,my eight-year-old son,to a restaurant to celebrate his birthday.Bob wore his brand-new cowboy boots into the hall, his face shining with pride and joy. This was Bob's special day.
We approached the counter, where Pete greeted us with a clear warmth. His brown eyes twinkled with kindness.
“Welcome,” he said with a smile.“Wow,you look happy, little fellow.” Pete brought his face close to Bob's level.
“I got cowboy boots,” Bob boasted.“I picked them out myself.” Bob lifted his right foot in the air so Pete could see the hand-stitched leather.
“Those boots look amazing, like fresh leather,” Pete said.He opened his eyes and looked directly into Bob's eyes.“Thank you for sharing your treasure with me.”
Bob laughed happily at Pete's reaction. Then,Pete returned to the register.
“What does the birthday boy want to drink It's on me,” Pete offered.
Bob shuffled back and forth in excitement since soda was a rare treat in our home. Now,he could order any soda he wanted.Bob considered the many possibilities, taking more time than a fast-food customer should.Eventually,he settled on root beer.
“Excellent choice,my friend. It's what I would have picked myself.”
Pete's confirmation brought a massive smile to Bob's face.We ordered our meals and watched as Pete assembled the drinks and food on the tray (托盘) before us.When everything was on it,I reached for the tray, but Pete said,“Let me carry it out for you.” Pete followed us to the hall as the birthday boy took a considerable amount of time to pick the perfect table.Pete patiently held our tray until we were seated.

“Wow,he is nice,” Bob observed after Pete had walked away.I had to agree—something about Pete gave off love.As Bob and I enjoyed his birthday lunch,Pete worked dutifully behind the counter.I observed him with each customer who came in,watching Pete treat all customers with extreme respect and courtesy. He looked everyone in the eyes, gave each person a kind smile, and spoke with them about their day.And when their food was ready,he carried it to their table.I could imagine Pete did that out of the love he felt for everyone.
Towards the end of our stay,Pete came to our table. He gave Bob a coupon for a free meal to use in the future.“Happy birthday, little man,” Pete said.“And I love the boots.” My heart swelled with thanksgiving for this man who made my son feel marvelous.Pete taught me a great deal about love that day.Although his service might sound small and insignificant,it changed me for life.Pete had a simple job without any influence.Yet,he served everyone he encountered with a genuine love all could feel.
