A T-shirt seems like a simple and ordinary item of clothing, but behind it lies a complex
and eye-opening story when it comes ___(1_9_)___ environmental protection.
Let's start from the very beginning. The cotton ___(2_0_)___ (use) to make the T-shirt is
grown in large fields. Farmers often rely on a large number of chemical fertilizers and pesticides
to ensure high yields. These chemicals not only pollute the soil and water but also harm the
ecological balance of the surrounding areas. Bees and other beneficial insects, ___(2_1_)___ are

crucial for pollination(授粉), are affected, and the biodiversity of the area declines.
After the cotton is harvested, it ___(2_2_)___ (send) to a textile factory. In the factory, a lot of
water is consumed in the processes of washing, spinning, and dyeing. The wastewater is often
full of harmful substances in the dyeing process. ___(2_3_)___ not properly treated, this
wastewater will flow into rivers and lakes, causing water pollution.
Once the T-shirt is made, it is shipped to various parts of the world. The transportation
process ___(2_4_)___ (influence) significantly the environment since then. Trucks, ships, and
planes used for shipping all consume fossil fuels and emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse
gases, ___(2_5_)___ (contribute) to global warming.
When we buy and wear the T-shirt, our daily washing habits also have an impact. Even
when we no longer want to wear the T-shirt, ___(2_6_)___ we do matters after that. If it is simply
thrown away and ends up in a landfill, it will take a long time to decompose. However, if we
choose to donate it or recycle it, it can be given a new life, reducing the need for new T-shirts
___(2_7_)___ (produce) and conserving resources.
In conclusion, the story of a T-shirt shows us that every step in the life cycle of a product
has an impact on the environment. As consumers, we should be more aware of these issues and
make more environmentally-friendly choice. Only in this way ___(2_8_)___ we contribute to the

The Old Man and the Sea, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a timeless novella about an
aging Cuban fisherman named Santiago. For eighty-four consecutive days, Santiago struggles
without catching a single fish, becoming a symbol of bad luck in his small coastal village. His
young apprentice, Manolin, admires Santiago deeply but is forced by his parents to leave the old
man’s boat and join a more successful fisherman. Despite his loneliness and the villagers’ pity,
Santiago remains determined. On the eighty-fifth day, he ventures far into the Gulf Stream,
where he hooks a massive marlin — a fish larger than his own boat.
The marlin drags Santiago’s boat for two days and nights. The old man, weakened by
hunger and exhaustion, battles the fish with every ounce of strength, refusing to surrender. “Pain
does not matter to a man,” he whispers, embodying his code of resilience. When he finally kills
the marlin, he ties it to the side of his boat, only to face a new threat: sharks attracted by the
marlin’s blood. Santiago fights fiercely with makeshift weapons — harpoons, oars, and even a
knife — but the sharks strip the marlin to its skeleton.
Returning to shore, Santiago collapses in his hut. Though he brings back nothing but bones,
the village marvels at the skeleton’s size, and Manolin weeps at the old man’s injuries.
Hemingway’s story is a celebration of human endurance: Santiago proves that defeat in action
can coexist with victory in spirit.

A. Unpredictable nature. B. The failure of effort.
C. A test of Santiago’s determination. D. The village’s scorn.
52. What theme does Hemingway emphasize in The Old Man and the Sea
A. The importance of wealth. B. The loneliness of old age.

V. Guided Writing(15%)
Nowadays, there’s a growing trend that people make use of their holidays to travel. When it comes to
travel styles, some people choose a package tour because of its low price, guidance service and the chance of
making friends.
As far as I am concerned, considering the happiness of freedom, I prefer a self-organized tour. Living up
to its name, a self-organized tour involves organization by yourself. You can get to know about the target city
in advance and then choose your favorite tourist attractions, as well as activities you are interested in. As a
result, a schedule that suits you most can be worked out, so you can travel later as freely as you like. The
reasons why I like this kind of travelling are various. Freedom is just one of them. As an old saying goes,
“One’s meat is another’s poison’’, a self-organized tour provides you with a chance to experience what you are
most interested in. Moreover, the flexible schedule is also attractive. You can choose freely between play and
relaxation and even change your timetable whenever you like during the travel. Last but not least, although a
self-organized tour involves trouble of booking a hotel and a restaurant, I regard it as a golden opportunity for
us to improve our ability to manage our lives. What’s worth mentioning is that we can also spend time in
volunteering and helping the local poor children if we take a self-organized tour.
All in all, a self-organized tour is my favorite, and I hope more people will enjoy their travel as well as
help others in this way of travel.
