As a hockey parent, while watching my son played from Mite to Bantam, House League to Travel, I’ve learned that losing may be best for kids.
In his third season in 2019, my son’s team never lost more than three straight games. There was happiness, boasting, celebration, pizza. In short, it was a typically good youth hockey season. He improved as a player, but did not much change as a person.
However, what happened the next year added its story to the legends of sporting incompetence. Not merely weak but prettily bad, this team lost 40 of their first 50 games, most of the defeats coming in the course of two losing streaks. For a time, I worried that these streaks would kill my child’s love of the game.
But that’s not what happened. As bad as it got, the losing was clarifying. It weeded out the kids who were in it less for the game than the glory, leaving just the die-hards behind. What started as a list of 17 of the team was cut down to 12. It was especially instructive for the kids. It taught him a great truth of the world: For everyone good, there is someone better.
What’s more, the kids were learning the game in a way that only losing can teach. Each player got to play everywhere, to learn and appreciate the role of every position on the ice. They kept an eye on their opponents too, studying and incorporating the tricks of success. In an effort to break the streak, they went back to basics, accepted the wisdom of the hockey ancients: If playing like a team, they can defeat a collection of all-stars; If doing small and unappreciated tasks well, they can get the goal.
This new team had character and could never be counted out, no matter the score. They had learned the most important lesson: You can lose without being beaten. They squeaked into the state tournament, then made it all the way to the final, where the winner was decided in overtime. When they lost that game and went into the handshake line, it was not as runners-up but as a team that had been made into winners in the only way that will stick — by losing.
24.What does the author think about the son’s team in the third season in 2019
A.The team had a bad performance.
B.The team didn’t live up to the author’s expectations.
C.The team played typically well and won all the games.
D.The team didn’t have the spirit of facing failure.
25.What does the underlined word “clarify” refer to
A.The losing made the kids better understand hockey.
B.The losing helped the kids learn a great truth of the world.
C.The losing separated true player from those playing for glory.
D.The losing boosted the kids’ teamwork.
26.According to the author, what have the son’s team learned
A.For everything big, there is something bigger.
B.Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
C.God helps those who help themselves.
D.The hardest battle you’re going to fight is the battle to be just you.
27.What is the best title for the passage
A.How Kids Can Deal With Losing B.What Kids Can Learn From Losing
C.Why Kids Can Benefit From Losing D.How Kids Can Get Over From Losing

How long does it take you to make a cup of tea Forty seconds, if you press the tea bag against the side of the mug. I’m not judging — that was me until recently, and we are not alone. Only 4% of people in the UK make their tea from leaves, and it seems the rest of us are missing out.
I’ve dipped in and out of tea over the years, and have never taken it quite as seriously as coffee, but this long holiday seems as good a time as any to up my game. Previously, I’d been put off by the complexity of the process, but it turns out that a proper cup of tea from leaves doesn’t have to require a whole lot of tools. The game-changer for me was tea-ière, which is a bit like a cafetiere (咖啡壶).
So, where to start our new adventure The obvious answer, particularly this New Year weekend, is China, which is to tea what France is to wine. The country produces every imaginable style, from delicate green tea to refreshing jasmine tea. If you’re used to black tea, it’s probably best to begin with the rich oolong. And if you’re already into tea, prepare yourself for the mind-blowing puerh, which, according to my note, tastes of forest floor with a slight smell of shoe repair shop, and which, you’ll be relieved to hear, is a lot nicer than it sounds.
It’s worth taking the trouble to get the basics right: the amount of tea, the quantity and temperature of the water, the ideal infusion (浸泡) time and, above all, pouring every last drop of tea from the pot.
And if none of these will drag you away from tea bags, try loose tea leaves at least once infused for two to three minutes and see if you notice a difference. Watching those leaves magically spread out and thinking about what you are drinking is strangely comforting in a bitter winter.
28.What can we know about tea drinking in the UK
A.British people take tea less seriously than coffee.
B.Most people prefer tea bags to loose tea leaves.
C.It takes 40 seconds to prepare a tea bag.
D.One might be judged if not using tea bags.
29.What did the author discover about drinking tea from leaves
A.It takes more effort than drinking coffee. B.It turns out to be tool-free.
C.It’s fun and entertaining. D.It’s easier than anticipated.
30.How does the author present his idea in paragraph 3
A.By analyzing figures. B.By presenting options.
C.By drawing conclusions. D.By describing experiences.
31.What could be the most suitable title for the passage
A.Why Not Go For Chinese Tea B.How To Pick The Right Tea
C.Loose Tea Leaves, Or Tea Bags D.Fancy A Better Way Of Drinking Tea

Electric cars have been gaining popularity in recent years, and for good reason. Not only are they cost-effective in the long run, but they also offer many benefits for the environment. Here are three reasons why electric cars are great for the planet.
One of the biggest advantages of electric cars is that they produce zero emissions (排放). Unlike gasoline cars that emit harmful pollutants into the air, electric cars are powered by electricity that is generated from renewable sources such as wind or solar power. This means that when you drive an electric car, you’re not only saving money on gas, but you’re also helping to improve air quality.
Electric cars also save more energy than gasoline cars. When you drive a gasoline car, only about 20% of the energy made by the fuel is actually used to move the car forward. The rest of the energy is lost to heat and other things. Electric cars, on the other hand, convert (转化) almost 100% of the energy stored in the battery into motion. This means that electric cars can travel further on the same amount of energy, which is great news for the environment.
Another benefit of electric cars is that they reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Gasoline cars are powered by gasoline, which is a non-renewable resource that is taken from the earth. As we continue to use gasoline, we’re using the earth’s natural resources and contributing to climate change. By driving electric cars, we can reduce our need for gasoline and move towards renewable sources of energy.
In conclusion, electric cars offer many benefits for the environment, including zero emissions, energy efficiency, and reduced need on fossil fuels. As more people make the switch to electric cars, we can help to create a cleaner and more sustainable future for ourselves and for future generations.
32.What’s an advantage of electric cars from the text
A.They are costly. B.They run faster.
C.They are eco-friendly. D.They use less energy.
33.Where does most of the energy in gasoline cars end up in
A.The motion to move a car. B.The heat and other things.
C.The storage to travel further. D.The money saved to buy a new car.
34.What can be known about the impact of gasoline cars
A.They help to clean the air. B.They give out harmful gases.
C.They consume fuel completely. D.They have a promising future.
35.What may the follow-up paragraph focus on
A.The future of the next generation. B.The skills for the young to drive a car.
C.The development of green economy. D.The way to produce more electric cars.

The Importance of Being Independent
The ability to be independent is something not everyone possesses. 36 And learning to support yourself is fundamental for any success you ever hope to achieve. At the end of the day, you only have yourself to fall back on, so it’s very important to be able to handle things on your own.
People rely on others far more than it is necessary. People put their happiness in the hands of a significant person, thinking this will bring them satisfaction. 37
Should you always be dependent on someone else Of course not. 38 Therefore, you need to learn how to make decisions on your own. People are unable to be independent for a variety of reasons, with fear being the biggest: the fear of being alone, the fear of rejection and the fear of the future.
However, there is no reason to base your life decisions on relationships with people. All relationships end at some point or another. 39 The only thing you can do is alter your understanding of relationships. Instead of expecting them to make you happy by being in your life and providing enjoyment, appreciate the time spent and enjoyment since you know it will be gone.
40 Don’ t ask for advice , do what you want and learn from your own mistakes. Many people are afraid to think for themselves because that involves taking responsibility for their own lives. This is just one way people become dependent. We are born alone and we die alone, so we each have to take responsibility for our lives at every step along the way.
A.There is nothing you can do to change or affect that.
B.This is a serious error too many people make these days.
C.Make decisions by and for yourself, whatever they may be.
D.You can control your own life by making your own choices.
E.However, you need to be independent in order to survive in the world.
F.In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is wait for the right time.
G.Not only are you limiting yourself, you are also likely to become a burden to this person.

When Valentine's Day was around the corner, Grandma came down with a terrible cold when she was travelling from Colorado to my family's house in California. She was too weak to go out at all, which was sad and disappointing. That was because Grandma and Grandpa had been planning to take my little sister Indi and me to the zoo for Valentine's Day. Grandma, as an animal lover, had been especially looking forward to it.
On Valentine's Day Indi begged Grandma to go to the zoo together. But Grandma jokingly explained that if she went there, she might spread her cold to other visitors, or even to the animals, making them all start sneezing.
In my mind, I imagined the sight that an elephant kept sneezing. Meanwhile I made my arm into a trunk and blurted out a funny trumpeting sound that ended in a gigantic sneeze. "Good one, Brother!" Indi laughed. "That elephant would need a huge box of tissues.”
Grandma was amused. But she insisted that she should stay at home and rest up. She wished us a pleasant visit and reminded us to send her regards to the monkeys in the zoo.
Well, we did go and we did have a great time but I kept wishing Grandma could have been there with us. When we reached the monkey mountain, Grandpa told us to hold still and say “cheese" and snapped a good picture of the monkeys and us.
“Cheese!” I said. But Indi said, “Happy Valentine's Day, Grandma!”
"You were supposed to say cheese." said Grandpa.
Indi shrugged, “It just came out.”
"I'm glad it did" I said, because your words just gave me a fantastic idea! What if we take pictures of different animals, and then turn them into a special Valentine gift for Grandma " Indi and Grandpa agreed and we kept taking pictures with delight for Grandma's surprise.

66.Dear Alice,
Our school English paper will hold an essay competition whose theme is Natural Disasters. I’d like to invite you to take part in it.
It is well-known that many natural disasters happen every year in America, causing great damage. You can introduce the main natural disasters, such as hurricanes and snowstorms and tell some common knowledge about them. For example, you can discuss how they happen, what harm they may cause, and what you can do in face of disasters. The measures you take may benefit us, as we also face many natural disasters.
The deadline is June 8th, 2020. Looking forward to your article.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.Paragraph 1: When we got home, we set about making the gift. At first, we printed the photos and planned to fill them on the heart cards. “But we have limited room!” complained Indi. So we agreed to make Grandma a Valentine zoo book. The book included various animals, each occupying a page. Indi was responsible for coloring the photos with markers while I made speech balloons coming out of animals’ mouths. For example, the monkeys said, “We go bananas with you.” Finally, we stuck the cards together to form a book with Grandpa’s help. It took forever to finish but it turned out great.
Paragraph 2: Then we took the gift upstairs to Grandma’s room. “I bet she’d like it.” Grandpa said. Indi and I nodded with agreement. On entering the room, Indi rushed to present Grandma with our creation. When browsing the Valentine book, Grandma was deeply moved and happy tears blurred her eyes. “Oh, you little sweet potatoes!” Grandma smiled, “I love you.” It seemed that the love and devotion behind our gift had turned Grandma’s frown upside down. At that moment, it suddenly dawned on me that in terms of a gift, what matters much is not the gift but the care you show.
