Quebec City, Canada
Quebec City was a colonial (殖民地的) town which was fortified by the settling Europeans. The walls began to be built in 1608 under both British and French regimes (政权). A fort was constructed by the British as an additional defensive measure and remains undamaged to date. The city’s fortifications were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

Shen Wei, the character designer behind China’s highest-earning animated(动画的)film Ne Zha, recently spoke about his challenging journey in designing characters for Ne Zha 2, following the great success of the original film in 2019.
Ne Zha 2 joined the very lively Spring Festival film season list and was first shown on Jan. 29. Building on the remarkable success of its predecessor, this five-year project continues to draw inspiration from the playful but adorable character from the Ming dynasty novel The Investiture of the Gods. It also introduces a “dimensional upgrade” that includes new characters, thrilling battle scenes, more than 1,900 visual effect shots, and enhanced details for IMAX.
When discussing the challenges of character design amid high audience expectations after a five-year wait, Shen emphasized the importance of two concepts: continuity and innovation(创新). “I believe finding both keeping the old and adding new things are significant,” Shen said. “The audience has already accepted elements of the original, so it’s impossible to completely change the established framework(结构). Our approach is to keep the main ideas of the first film into the sequel (续集)while innovating and improving on existing techniques.”
Ne Zha 2 includes a substantial increase in new characters, tripling the number from the first film. A promotional video reveals that nearly every character has received unique battle designs instead of reusing previous designs. Shen noted that this approach demanded considerable effort and time. His goal was to immerse the audience in a story that feels authentic and engaging, ensuring that each character is fully developed and relatable.
One new character that impressed Shen is Ao Shun, a legendary dragon king. His complex armor, made entirely of blades, along with his unique fighting style, presented significant development challenges. Shen worked closely with Yang Yu, the director of the Ne Zha film series, known by his nickname Jiaozi, to explore various versions of the character’s costume and performance style.
Looking ahead, Shen expressed a strong interest in exploring projects that involve alien and future-like creatures during the revival of Chinese animation. “Such themes,” he said, “allow me to explore new ideas and awaken my imagination.” He noted that character design is a creatively rich and rewarding process.
24. What does the term “dimensional upgrade” in paragraph 2 most likely refer to
A.A shift from 2D to 3D animation.
B. Reducing the film’s runtime for better pacing.
C. Focusing only on character backstories.
D. Expansions in story, visual effects, and technology.
25. Why does Shen believe it is impossible to completely change the established framework
A. Because the audience has developed an emotional connection to the original elements.
B. Because the original film’s framework is too inflexible to allow for changes.
C. Because the filmmakers lack the creativity to introduce new ideas.
D. Because the sequel must strictly stick to the original storyline.
26. How does Shen’s approach to character design contribute to the overall experience of Ne Zha 2
A. By making the film more technically advanced.
B. By balancing tradition with creative improvements.
C. By completely changing the original character designs.
D. By stressing the importance of audience preferences.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To show the box office success of Ne Zha 2.
B. To advertise the global screening of Ne Zha 2.
C. To analyze Shen Wei’s design ideas and challenges in Ne Zha 2.
D. To compare the visual effects of Ne Zha and Ne Zha 2.
C
A new training plan could remind artificial intelligence (AI) programs that they aren’t know-it-alls.
AI programs that run robots, self-driving cars and other autonomous machines often train in simulated (模拟) environments before making real-world running. But situations that an AI doesn’t meet with in virtual reality can become blind spots in its real-life decision making. For example, a delivery bot trained in a virtual city with no emergency vehicles may not know that it should stop before entering a crosswalk if it hears sirens (警报).
To create machines that move carefully rather than take a risk, computer scientist Ramya Ramakrishnan of MIT and her team developed a post-simulation training program in which a human character helps the AI identify gaps in its education. “This allows the AI to safely act in the real world,” says Ramakrishnan. Engineers could also use information on AI blind spots to design better simulations in the future.
During its testing period, the AI takes note of environmental factors influencing the human’s actions that it does not recognize from its simulation. When the human does something the AI doesn’t expect — like hesitating(犹豫) to enter a crosswalk despite having the right-of-way — the AI checks its surroundings for previously unknown factors, such as sirens. If the AI recognizes any of these features, it thinks the human is following some safety rule it didn’t learn in the virtual world and that it should follow the human’s action in these types of situations.
Ramakrishnan’s team have tested this setup by first training AI programs in simplistic simulations and then letting them learn their blind spots from human characters in more realistic but still virtual world. The researchers now need to test the system in the real world.
28. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about AI programs
A. Their applications. B. Their problems.
C. Their advantages. D. Their changes.
29. Why does the human character join in the test
A. To ensure the safety of the team. B. To study why AI learns quickly.
C. To help AI recognize its weakness. D. To see how AI affects his action.
30. What will Ramakrishnan’s team do in the next stage
A. Carry out the test in real conditions. B. Design better simulation at home.
C. Copy the style of the human walk. D. Follow safety rules on the road.
31. What can we infer about the post-simulation training program
A. It cuts the cost of the training. B. It will badly influence the city.
C. It has attracted many volunteers. D. It may benefit self-driving cars.
Phone addiction has a number of negative effects. Here are some ways to remove it.
In order not to look at your phone as soon as you wake up in the morning, place your phone in another room or your coat pocket. Then spend at least the first 30 minutes of your day building good habits. 32
Studies show that on average we use the phone 50 to 150 times a day. 33 You could do some reading, do a crossword puzzle or even something as simple as a walk in the yard——anything helping you get rid of your phone is OK.
One of the main problems with smart phones is that you worry if you don’t check your phone regularly, you may miss out on something important, such as invitations to events or work emails. 34 When someone has something important to tell you, they may give you a call. Therefore, it is OK to stay away from your phone sometimes.
What's going on in the real world, right in front of you, is almost always more important than what is happening online. Put away your phone when you are with someone important. 35
For example, having dinner with friends will become awkward if you always check your phone.
36 That is because being addicted to the phone before going to bed greatly influences your sleep. This can harm your physical and mental health in the long run. Therefore, make it a rule to stop using your phone an hour before you go to sleep.
A. Ask your friends or family for help.
B. However, it is almost never the case.
C. Your smart phone has almost every tool that you need.
D. So you should do something meaningful to avoid looking at it.
E. A good rest should be more important than your phone at night.
F. This could be exercise like a morning run or cooking a good breakfast.
G. Many relationships have suffered because of our addiction to the phone.

It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy hank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added. “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”
Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy hank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful presents. I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years. I had only put money into the piggy hank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy hank for anything. Bat one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces. I was sleepless that night. Staring at my piggy bank. I was thinking about what I could do with it.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning I took out my piggy bank and shook it.

根据第三段中“To create machines that move carefully rather than take a risk, computer scientist Ramya Ramakrishnan of MIT and her team developed a post-simulation training program in which a human character helps the AI identify gaps in its education. (为了创造出行动谨慎而不是冒险的机器,麻省理工学院的计算机科学家Ramya Ramakrishnan和她的团队开发了一个模拟后训练项目,在这个项目中,人类角色帮助人工智能识别其教育中的差距)”可知,人类角色加入测试是为了帮助人工智能认识到它的弱点。故选C项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The researchers now need to test the system in the real world. (研究人员现在需要在现实世界中测试该系统)”可知,下一阶段Ramakrishnan的团队将在真实条件下进行测试。故选A项。
根据第四段中“When the human does something the AI doesn’t expect — like hesitating to enter a crosswalk despite having the right-of-way — the AI checks its surroundings (环境) for previously unknown factors, such as sirens. If the AI recognizes any of these features, it thinks the human is following some safety rule it didn’t learn in the virtual world and that it should follow the human’s action in these types of situations.

Dear Tim ,
Knowing with delight that you are interested in the Lantern Festival, I am really glad to write to tell you about it.
As a typical traditional festival, the Lantern Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. On that day, we eat yuanxiao which represents the reunion, setting off fireworks, visiting the lantern fair and guessing lantern riddles. Apart from those, there is Dragon Dance and other folk performances.
I’d like to invite you to join us for the Lantern Festival. Looking forward to your coming/arrival.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Tim ,
Hearing that you are interested in our traditional festival Tomb-Sweeping Day, I’m glad to share with you some ideas of it.
Tomb-Sweeping Day dates back to over 2000 years ago, falling on April 4 or 5 every year. One of the most important activities on this day is to sweep graves to honor ancestors, dead relatives and friends. On Tomb-Sweeping Day, thousands of Chinese families will head to cemeteries to clean and sweep the tombs of dead family members. To make it greener, we now offer fresh flowers or grow some ever-green plants instead of lighting candles, incense. In addition, as the spring comes and everywhere gets green, people often go picnicking, hiking, play kites or plant willows(柳树).
If you come to China, you can join us.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Tim ,
Knowing that you are interested in the Dragon Boat Festival, I’m writing to introduce something about it to you.
The Dragon Boat Festival is also called the Duanwu Festival. It is one of the traditional Chinese festivals and it is held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the the lunar year. It is said that this festival is celebrated in memory/honor of Qu Yuan, a great poet in ancient China who loved his country and drowned himself in a river to stick to his ideal. It is celebrated in various ways, especially marked by two activities: racing dragon boat and eating zongzi. Dragon boat races, dating back to more than 2,000 years ago, are very popular with people especially for those in the south. Zongzi, made up of rice and wrapped in fresh bamboo leaves, is also a special food for the festival.
Hope you can come to China and experience it by your self.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Tim ,
Falling on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated by Chinese people for centuries.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, people enjoy delicious mooncakes, which are in the shape of the full moon. It is for this reason that they are called “moon” cakes. In the evening, families gather together to celebrate the festival with a big meal. After dinner, people usually admire the shining moon with their families and friends. The roundness of the full moon on the Mid-Autumn night is regarded as a symbol of reunion and happiness by Chinese people.
As one of the most ancient traditional festivals in China, the Mid-Autumn Festival plays a significant role in Chinese history and culture.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1: The next morning, I took out my piggy bank and shook it. The sound of the coins was louder than ever. I had saved so much money, and now I had a choice to make. I could either buy my dream bike or help the children who had lost everything in the earthquake. I thought about the smiling faces of the children I had seen on the news, their hopelessness and fear. I knew what I had to do. I took a deep breath and decided to break the piggy bank.
Paragraph 2: Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over. He looked at me with a puzzled expression. I explained to him what I had seen on the news and why I had decided to break the piggy bank. He listened carefully and then smiled. “I’m proud of you,” he said. “You’ve learned the true value of money and the importance of helping others.” With his support, I felt even more confident in my decision. I knew that my dream bike would wait, but the children needed help now.
Paragraph 1: The next morning, I took out my piggy bank and shook it. The sound of the coins was like music to my ears, but it was also a reminder of the difficult choice I had to make. I had saved for so long, and now I had the chance to help those in need. I thought about the children who had lost their homes and how much they needed support. I knew that my dream bike could wait, but these children couldn’t. With a heavy heart, I decided to break the piggy bank.
Paragraph 2: Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over. He looked at me with a mix of surprise and concern. I told him about the earthquake and how much I wanted to help the children. He listened intently and then nodded. “You’ve made a wise choice,” he said. “Sometimes, the greatest gifts we can give are the ones that come from our hearts.” His words gave me strength. I knew that breaking the piggy bank was the right thing to do, and I felt a sense of peace knowing that I was making a difference.
The next morning, I took out my piggy bank and shook it. “There should be a lot of money in it. This is years of my savings,” I said to myself. I was about to break it and withdraw money when my mina came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. However, thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the piggy bank broke into pieces and the coins rolled all over the floor.
Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over. I explained to him what had happened. Having known my thought, he fondly touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you.” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now.” “Thank you, Grandpa,” I was overwhelmed with happiness. From that day on, you would always see me riding my bike on the street, leaving my hearty laughter behind.
