Right now, I have three different water bottles sitting on my desk.My makeup table is so messy that it would take me at least three minutes to locate my lipstick.Under my bed I have bags, purses and who knows what else that I've forgotten about.Sound familiar Be honest:How often does your social media scrolling lead to shopping And how many of those things that advertisements made you buy did you actually need
Advertising,or marketing, often gets the blame for fueling wasteful consumption, and I can see why.It involves employing persuasive techniques to encourage an addictive behavior that results in repeat panies often advocate strategies such as limited-time discounts, promotions and coupons(优惠券).I've definitely fallen for them many times.A membership card is another effective form of marketing that increases the likelihood of returning customers.Since buying more will lead to the accumulation of loyalty points(积分),customers will return regularly to purchase items. When their loyalty points are about to expire, customers will return to buy more even if they do not need them.
But here's the thing:It's not just advertising. The rise of inexpensive products made on a large scale has made it way too easy to live wastefully. These products are often affordable and non-durable so that they can be frequently replenished(补充)at low cost.I mean, how many of us have bought a trendy $10 shirt, only to throw it after a few wears Similarly, fast furniture is generating massive waste as home owners turn to these cheap and stylish pieces of furniture that often do not last long. The faster buyers replenish their products, the more waste is created.
As I sit here, surrounded by the mess and reflecting on my shopping habits,a realization has dawned on me.It is ultimately the choice of individuals who must decide what they should buy and not be influenced by advertising or submit to the temptation of cheap and trendy products. After all, there is just so much we can eat, wear or use.Maybe it's time to think twice before clicking"add to cart".

27.Which is a suitable title for the text
A.Mass Production:From Trend to Trash
B.Advertising:The Mastermind that Misleads Us
C.What on Earth Drives Wasteful Consumption
D.Does Social Media Contribute to Repeat Buying

AI has convinced many that we must reform education. Now that chatbots can speedily access information and answer complex questions, why bother memorizing historical facts orquotations Shouldn't we instead teach kids to think critically and solve problems, leaving the boring work to computers
In a 2000 essay, two years after Google was founded, educator E.D.Hirsch demolished the argument that we can always just look things up."Cognitive(认知的)psychology holds that prior knowledge helps us absorb more of what we learn and provides the fuel for creative thinking,"hewrote,"the Internet has placed a wealth of information at our fingertips. To be able to use that information,we must already possess a storehouse of knowledge."Nick Gibb,a former UKschool minister, echoed this in 2021,stating that the ability to “just google it”is highly dependent on what a person has stored in their long-term memory.
The suggestion that we should outsource our memory to "free up"limited space for moreactive thinking is based on a misconception. Thanks to the brain's plasticity, its long-termmemory center can expand. Daisy Christodoulou, author of Seven Myths about Education, warns that using the web as a personal memory skips mental consolidation, risking emptying our mindsand damaging our learning ability.Indeed, searching online often results in us not being able to recall it later —either because our brains assume we don't need to remember it,or because the digital distractions divide our attention. We're also likely to overestimate our intelligence, mistaking knowledge found on the Internet for our own.If students relied on webs not just for facts but for thinking, not only memory but also cognition and creativity would face negative outcomes. The once-steady rise in IQ scores has changed in some countries,as reported.
Governments are still exploring AI's role in education. While AI may enhance learning,we must not abandon foundational knowledge. In an era of misinformation, it's even more vital that we humans have a firm grasp of basic facts.
28.What does the underlined word"demolished"mean in paragraph 2
A.Rejected. B.Proved. C.Proposed. D.Defended.
29.What is the key to using online resources according to paragraph 2
A.Learning ability. B.Prior knowledge.
C.Creative thinking . D.Long-term memory capacity.
30.What result of web-memory dependence is described in paragraph 3
A.IQ scores will rise. B.Concentration will improve.
C.Memory burdens will decline. D.Cognition and creativity will suffer.
31.What do we know from the text
A.The author advocates education reform.
B.Critical thinking is the core of education.
C.AI-driven teaching widens knowledge gaps.
D.The three experts stand on the same ground.

Rise with the sun and rest at sunset—this was the way of life for our ancestors. Thanks to artificial light, which improves visibility at night, we can enjoy a much safer society and around-the-clock productivity. For wildlife, however, studies have shown it disturbs animals' natural sleep cycles, affects amphibian(两栖的)reproduction and throws migrating birds off course.
New research in Frontiers in Plant Science investigated how artificial light impacts plant-insect relationships.Researchers from Chinese Academy of Sciences noticed tree leaves in cities typically showed fewer signs of insect damage than those outside of cities, so they analyzed 5,500 leaf samples from two tree species throughout Beijing.Researchers found more artificial light in a given area meant tougher leaves. And the tougher the leaf, the less evidence of hungry insects. They don't fully understand why,but assume that trees under artificial light at night might be extending their photosynthesis(光合作用)time.
“Plants distribute their limited resources, such as nutrients, water and energy, among various functions like growth, reproduction and defense, depending on the environment.Light can affect how plants use resources,"says Ellen Cieraad,a plant ecologist from New Zealand."Since plants use light for growth, artificial night light could be unnaturally increasing the time trees spend on photosynthesis, allocating more resources to chemical compounds that make leaves tougher."
"If the same applied to leaves of other species, this would be bad news for insects,"researchers said.Changes in plants, and in interactions between plants and animals, can significantly impact the entire urban ecosystem.Herbivorous insects, which rely on leaves for food, may struggle to survive, disrupting the food chain.Fewer herbivorous insects could lead to declines in predators like birds, affecting biodiversity.Insects also play vital roles as pollinators(传粉媒介)and eat decaying plants, helping to break down leaves and returning nutrients to soil.In cities, healthysoil and healthy plant life supported by insects are good for humans,as plants provide shade and reduce heat trapped in cities.Moving forward, researchers are committed to refining their discovery, aiming to guide people to take corresponding actions.
32.What influence does artificial light bring according to the text
A.It toughens tree leaves. B.It shortens animals'sleep hours.
C.It illuminates birds'migrating routes. D.It increases amphibian reproduction rates.
33.Why is Ellen Cieraad quoted in paragraph 3
A.To raise a concern. B.To introduce a concept.
C.To support an assumption. D.To clarify a misunderstanding.

Ways to Avoid Overplanning and Enjoy Stress-free Holidays
Finding the best gifts for friends and family members, decorating the house, planning a party and hosting get-togethers: 36 .But if you overplan the holidays,it can cause stress rather than happiness they're meant to create. So if you find yourself in a never-ending loop of struggling for the perfect idea of what the holidays should look like,it's time to consider the following ways.
●Replace criticism with gratitude.During the holidays, if you are stuck in a cycle of self-critical thoughts —such as worrying that your gifts aren't good enough or feeling guilty for not decorating as nicely as others, start practicing gratitude. You can make a list of things you're thankful for or simply think about the good around you. 37 .
●Choose important traditions.Holidays are full of traditions, like annual handmade gifts or grandma-style holiday meals, which foster family connection. But following traditions can be stressful,as people feel pressured to do them in a certain way. 38 .Given limited time, energy and money, sometimes you have to make these tough choices.
●Drop the need for perfection.High expectations often lead to disappointment.Take time to figure out what truly matters—whether it's spending quality time with loved ones, taking a break to relax,or creating meaningful memories.Just focus on what brings genuine joy. 39 . Embrace simplicity and authenticity to find deeper fulfillment and happiness.
· 40 .People put a lot of pressure on themselves and feel like they've got to do everything. But the reality is you don't have to do all the work alone. When buried under pressure, ask others to lend a hand.People feel more involved when they contribute. This not only reduces stress but also boosts the holiday spirit.
A.Ask others to participate
B.Reduce the stress on others
C.These events can bring much joy
D.Do not chase an unattainable ideal
E.So,think about which ones to keep and which to drop
F.All those tasks can make the holiday season stressful
G.A positive mindset helps better tackle holiday challenges

I was really starving when I stepped out of the city library after an entire afternoon buried inbooks. Then I smelt something delicious—the hot dog stand at the street corner.
"One hot dog, please!"I nearly rushed to the stand.
“OK,ready soon!”The vendor(摊主)replied cheerfully. As he handed me the hot dog,he grinned,"You deserve the best hot dog in the world!"I guessed that was the slogan for his little business, for the words were painted in cheerful yellow letters on his cart.
I couldn't wait to take a bite. The warm bread, the chilli sauce and the juice in the sausage—it was the best thing in the world!Definitely at that time!
"Five dollars, young lady,"the vendor said, wiping his hands on his apron.
Hot dog in one hand,I reached for my wallet with the other.Just then,"Ouch!"a cry came from behind me.I turned back and found a woman in her 50's struggling to pick herself up from the ground. Her grocery bag split open with oranges rolling in every direction.
Seeing this,I stuffed the rest of the hot dog into my mouth, picked up the oranges and put them back into her bag."Are you okay "I asked with concern.
"Thank you.I didn't see the pole on the ground,"she breathed. Noticing her hand was wounded,I remembered the Band-Aid(创可贴)in my bag and dug it out."Thank you so much for your kindness,"the woman said as I carefully applied it to her wound.Across the street, the bus I was about to take was pulling in.Waving a goodbye to the woman,I dashed to the bus stop and barely got aboard before the door closed.
As the bus pulled away,I saw the woman bought a hot dog from the same vendor. On theway,I was always wondering if she would be greeted with the same words,"You deserve the best hot dog in the world!"I was lost in it...
