On Sept. 21 in Mount Pleasant Township, Pennsylvania, a residence was burning with a girl trapped on the second story. Elijah Hale, a volunteer firefighter since his early teenage years, was able to be on the scene before other first responders got there, and his head start saved the life of that girl. “I knew something was not right, and I found out that there was a girl trapped up there,” Elijah said. “The smoke had filled the entire house.”
He was able to quickly locate a ladder and use it to rescue the girl from the fiery house, according to a post from the Irishtown Fire Company.
“Elijah Hale,” the company posted shortly after the rescue, “a member of the Irishtown Fire Company, came upon tonight’s house fire on Bender Road, and utilized a ladder, climbing up to the second floor, and rescuing a trapped resident.”
“Our company is proud of his quick thinking, and willingness to take action without the benefit of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) or other firemen on the scene. His quick action undoubtedly saved a life. Well done Elijah.”
Elijah isn’t taking all the credit, though, pointing out that the girl had done some quick thinking of her own that likely saved her life, too. “I believe she found a guitar and used that to break the storm window out,” he said. “If she didn’t do that, the longer she was exposed to that smoke, the worse off it would have been for her.”
The whole ordeal (磨难) was over within minutes and as soon as he got her out, EMS (Emergency Medical Service) was pulling up, so he left her with them.
“It’s a blur. I mean it was probably 30 seconds from the time I pulled up to the time I got the ladder, and another 30 seconds till she was out of the house and outside,” he recalled.

Have you ever thought about why malls, restaurants, and even theaters have music Well, to understand this, you simply just look back at how you felt when you heard music in these places. Music is known to improve the mood of people. Often music helps us pay attention to what we are doing. Music helps patients feel good and helps them recover faster and better.
Depression (沮丧) is a state of mind that most of us experience at some point of time. There are some periods in our life when everything seems difficult. It seems that everything is getting worse and we have no control over our life. Studies have shown that music can be an important mood lifter in such situations. Music also plays a great role in making us feel less nervous or worried. Anxiety can often cause loss of sleep and other illnesses.
Music is often known as an international language. We may not know the language another person is speaking, but most of us respond to music in the same way. Music can often be the best way to connect with someone.
Music is one of the best ways to improve your moods, but this can depend largely on the kind of music you listen to. While happy music can certainly make you feel better, sad music can further lower your spirits. Listening to classical music can often make you feel a lot more powerful, while soft music can be the perfect way to relax at the end of a long way. If you want to use music to change the way how you are feeling, you need to understand the role of it, learn to recognize the kind of music that lifts your mood and helps you feel better. Once you realize the kind of music you can use, you can use it to change the way you feel. The right kind of music can be the perfect way to help us feel happier.
28. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. what meanings music has B. how we control our moods
C. how music affects our moods D. what kind of music we listen to
29. According to the passage, playing music in restaurants is to ______.
A. welcome the customers B. make customers feel good
C. make customers dance D. make customers feel depressed
30. From the passage, we can know that ______.
A. most of us suffer depression all the time B. most of us respond to music in different ways
C. music can be a good way to connect with others D. any kind of music will help us improve our moods
31. According to the passage, which kind of music can relax ourselves from a long day’s work
A. Soft music. B. Classical music. C. Sad music. D. Rock music.
D
To know how “fly-in, fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children, researchers recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work.
A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted plant.
Many teenagers’ parents have known this to be true and find ways to be present without a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
32. What did the study find about the 618 teens
A. They had more dinners with their parents.
B. They were more prepared to help themselves.
C. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
D. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
33. What is the author’s attitude to her two friends’ practices
A. She doubts them. B. She supports them.
C. She is worried about them. D. She cares little about them.
34. What does earlier research say about young kids according to Paragraph 5
A. They prefer parents’ quiet company. B. They want more freedom from parents.
C. They pay attention to parents’ behavior. D. They show more interest in new activities.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Teens Want Potted Plant Parents B. Your Kids Still Need Conversation
C. Quiet Families Raise Healthier Teenagers D. Parents Know Little About Today’s Teenagers

There are many well-known places suitable for camping. Throughout the year, these places usually attract more campers in the summer. So, it can be more crowded in this season. Campers who don’t like a crowded place can instead choose to go camping there in the winter. 38

While winter camping can be quite fun, the colder weather can make a camping trip more dangerous. 40 Winter campers should always check on weather reports before they leave. A small weather radio is an excellent tool to bring along. And it’s wise to take a guided winter camping trip for the first camping experience.

When I was eight years old, my seven-year-old cousin, Juliana, got sick. My brother and I were in the family room watching television when my mom came in to tell us the bad news. I wasn’t really sure what a heart operation meant, but I could tell it wasn’t a good thing. Juliana's family was on a tight budget (预算), and so was mine. My parents’ faces were full of worry and tears, and that was enough to make me cry, too.
When we went to see Juliana in the hospital, she was lying in bed, and she had tubes and other things on her. It was confusing and scary.
The treatments continued, but Juliana was weaker and weaker. Every time I visited her, it was hard for me to believe her change. She seemed to lose all her strength and her lovely face turned pale. She lost a lot of weight even though she had proper food. As a child, I really couldn’t understand what the doctors were doing to her-it seemed like they were making her feel worse.
Seeing my cousin in so much pain made me feel like my own heart was aching. Something needed to be done. I knew I wanted to help her get better faster, but at eight years old, I wasn’t sure how I could make a difference-I just knew I had to do something to help her.
One night after we visited Juliana, all the way home I couldn’t stop thinking about her. A hospital a very scary and cold place. I imagined how lonely Juliana must have felt lying there during the night.
When we got home, I sat down at our kitchen table. I always liked writing stories and drawing pictures, and I started working at it like I had done so many other nights. But this night was different-I was thinking about Juliana. I thought, “Juliana is going to receive rehabilitation training (康复训练), but money is tight. What if I can sell my drawings Then I can raise money to help her get well faster.” I told my parents what I thought.

There is no doubt that this is a good chance for you to learn more about Chinese traditional culture, and the exhibition is a great way to have a better understanding of the beauty of Chinese paper-cuttings.
The exhibition is so excellent that you can’t miss it. I’d appreciate it if you could accept my invitation.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
情节线:作者八岁时,表妹Juliana生病了→Juliana和作者家庭预算都很紧张→作者在医院看到表妹很痛苦,自己的心也在痛→作者想卖画来给Juliana的康复训练筹集资金
情感线:that was enough to make me cry→my own heart was aching→I was really proud
康复 jump at sth.欣然接受(机会、建议等)carry out执行,落实 make a difference有作用
One possible version:
They thought it was a wonderful idea, but then we came up with an even better one. We would make a cookbook. The very next day, I asked all of our family and friends to send me their favorite food and ways to cook it. Luckily, everyone jumped at the chance to help. Mom helped to put everything together. Dad typed while I drew the pictures for it. Our idea for a small cookbook quickly grew to over one hundred pages. The local skating club paid for the first printing. We sold almost 300 books in our first week. I couldn’t believe it!
Soon, the cookbooks gave us enough money to pay for Juliana’s rehabilitation training. Whenever I went to the hospital, Juliana thanked me with a smile. Not only did she thank me in words, but also she made a great effort, carrying out the instructions of her doctor and keeping doing light exercise every day. Soon she regained her strength and recovered. Our stories were shared among other patients and they were touched greatly. I was really proud that I had tried to make a difference and I made it!

W: Hi, Ted, our meeting will start in 30 minutes. I need to copy your report. Can I get it now
M: I am working on the last sentence. Just give me 10 more minutes.
Text 2
M: Mum, I ran out of money.
W: How much do you want 10 dollars
M: No, a half would be OK.
Text 3
M: Do you have everything ready
W: I’m sorry, but I have to buy a pound of sweets and some apples.
Text 4
W: Hey, kids! What are you doing in my yard
M: I’m sorry. We were playing baseball, and our ball is in your yard.
W: I see. You are lucky. My dog wasn’t in the yard. Next time, just knock on the door, OK
Text 5
W: Where are you going this Christmas
M: I thought about going to my brother’s, but now I’d like to go to my mother’s. What about you
W: Well, maybe I’ll go to my sister’s.
Text 6
W: How do you do, Mr. Green I’m a reporter from China Daily. I hear you are going to visit China. Do you mind if I ask you some questions
M: No, but not too many. I’m rather busy now.
W: OK. How long are you going to stay there
M: About two months, I think.
W: Could you tell me something about your new book
M: It’s a story related to a Chinese figure living in England.
Text 7
W: Watch out. You’re too close to the vehicle in front of us.
M: Oh, yeah. I’m just too excited.
W: Okay. Now carefully, turn right here, and wait, wait... stop!! You almost hit that man. How in the world did you pass the written test anyway
M: Oh. Sorry about that. It won’t happen again.
W: Look, Mr. Smith. Could you do me a favor When you come back to take the test again, plan on coming on Friday.
M: Why
W: It’s my day off.

W: Wow, it has been an incredible day. The National Art Museum of China was so inspiring! I’m so excited we visited it.
M: Me too. We’ve been talking about visiting since the beginning of the summer. It will be September next week. I’m glad we finally went there.
W: Same! The historical pieces were mind-blowing.
M: Agreed. We really have to thank our Chinese teacher who recommended us to visit. We’ve seen a lot of great places while touring around Beijing. But this was one of my favorites.
W: True. The calligraphy exhibition was amazing. I wish I could write like that. But I was most impressed by the size of the museum’s collections. What about you
M: I loved the mix of traditional and modern design in this building and its 21 different exhibitions.
W: It perfectly represents China’s art history and modern innovation.
M: Yes, I can’t agree more. Oh, it’s just 6:00 pm now. Since it’s early, how about riding back to the hotel
W: I’d like to walk through these small streets.
M: That’s a great idea. Let’s start walking now!
Text 9
M: Welcome. Jenny and I have got lots to tell you.
W: That’s right. This week Westfield Radio runs its annual competition. Last year it was to find the best dancer, and next year it will be the turn of local actors to enter. But this year we’re looking for the best singer in our city.
M: And what are the rules
W: Not many. You need to phone your entry. We don’t accept entries through the Internet or by fax.
M: Right. Well, it’s school holidays this week, so what’s on offer
W: The sports hall will open an hour earlier than usual at 8:00 am and shut later at 10:30 pm instead of nine. The indoor football ground is always popular and has to be booked in advance.
M: But what about the swimming pool
W: Not quite such good news. I’m afraid. It will be open about a week later than planned, but good news now — there will be no charge for swimmers for the first week. It’s the same size as the old one, but it is much better equipped.
M: That’s great.
Text 10
M: Hello, teachers and students! Now I have an important announcement to make. There are a few changes that have been made to the visit. So, please pay full attention to what I’m saying next. We still have been arranged to pay a visit to the local museum this weekend, but this time it’s on Saturday not on Sunday. We are informed that the museum won’t open this Sunday due to some special reasons. And we are going to meet on the playground instead of the school gate at eight o’clock tomorrow morning. We will go directly there by bus. You’d better wear comfortable shoes for long walks in the museum. Please bring a notebook with you and make some notes. We will have a discussion about it in the class meeting next Monday. Oh, I nearly forget to remind you of the rules. Don’t take pictures of the cultural relics. But if you do want to take a picture, you can do that in front of the museum. And nobody is allowed to touch anything there, or else they will be fined. Have a nice weekend!
