The Urban Sustainability Challenge (USC) is a national competition inviting high school teams to design actionable solutions for urban environmental issues. Teams of 3-5 members propose projects in three categories: waste management, green transportation, or energy efficiency. The competition emphasizes innovation, feasibility (可行性), and community impact.
Program Structure:
1. Proposal Submission (by November 10):
Submissions must include a 10-page report with technical diagrams, budget plans, and a feasibility analysis.
Example: A 2022 winning project from Seattle proposed solar-powered trash compactors to reduce landfill overflow.
2. Mentorship (导师制) Phase (December-February):
Shortlisted teams receive guidance from engineers and urban planners.
Teams attend biweekly workshops on prototyping, cost-benefit analysis, and public presentation skills.
A 2023 team from Boston improved their electric bike-sharing model after feedback on battery efficiency.
3. Final Pitch (March 15):
Live presentations are evaluated by a panel including the CEO of Green Cities Foundation and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy.
Top three teams receive grants up to $10000 and mentorship to implement their projects.
Evaluation Criteria:
Category Weight Key Focus
Innovation 30% Originality and technological creativity
Impact 40% Measurable environmental benefits
Feasibility 20% Real-world use and cost

When he was a little boy, his uncle called him “Sparky” after a comic-strip horse named Spark Plug. School was all but impossible for Sparky.
He failed every subject in the eighth grade. He failed physics in high school, getting a grade of zero. He also failed Latin, algebra and English. And his record in sports wasn’t any better. Though he did manage to make the school’s golf team, he quickly lost the only important match of the season. Oh, there was a consolation match (安慰赛); he lost that too.
Throughout his youth, Sparky was awkward socially. It wasn’t that the other students disliked him; it’s just that no one really cared all that much. In fact, Sparky was astonished if a classmate ever said hello to him outside of school hours. Sparky was a loser. He, his classmates... everyone knew it.
One thing was important to Sparky, however — drawing. He was proud of his artwork. No one else appreciated it. But that didn’t seem to matter to him. In his senior year of high school, he submitted some cartoons to the yearbook. The editors rejected the concept. Despite this brush-off, Sparky was convinced of his ability. He even decided to become an artist.
So, after completing high school, Sparky wrote to Walt Disney Studios. They asked for samples of his artwork. Despite careful preparation, it too was rejected. One more confirmation that he was a loser.
But Sparky still didn’t give up. Instead, he decided to tell his own life’s story in cartoons. Sparky’s cartoon character went on to become a cultural phenomenon of sorts. People readily identified with this “lovable loser”. He reminded people of the painful and embarrassing moments from their own past, of their pain and their shared humanity. The character soon became famous worldwide: “Charlie Brown”. And Sparky, the boy whose many failures never kept him from trying, whose work was rejected again and again... is the highly successful cartoonist Charles Schultz. His cartoon strip, Peanuts, continues to inspire books, T-shirts and Christmas specials, reminding us, as someone once commented, that life somehow finds a way for all of us, even the losers.
24. What can be inferred about Sparky’s classmates
A. They were not fond of him. B. They only said hello to him.
C. They laughed at him for his failures. D. They considered him socially invisible.
25. Which words best describe Sparky according to the passage
A. Talented and promising. B. Optimistic and sociable.
C. Ambitious and persistent. D. Passionate and knowledgeable.
26. What does the author focus on in the last paragraph
A. The inspiration of Sparky’s successful story.
B. The cultural impacts growing out of failures.
C. The story behind a famous cartoon character.
D. The process of creating the cartoon strip of Peanuts.
27. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. The Life of Charles Schultz B. The Loser Who Never Gave up
C. The Creation of Charlie Brown D. The Optimist Who Never Complained
C
A dried-out plain in the north of Sacramento, California was in perfect condition to fuel wildfires. It was 2014, and California was experiencing its worst drought in decades. The plain was full of dry brush. Fire prevention workers and ecologists in the state were desperately working to reduce potential wildfire fuel sources anywhere they could. Ecologists, facing a dangerously dry plain and a price tag of at least one million dollars for a major construction project to fix the site, did something surprising. They called in the beavers (河狸).
Thanks to the introduction of the animals, the site was, restored to a lively plain, with trees popping up and streams flowing across the land. Damon Ciotii, a biologist who led the project, said he was amazed by the results of the project. He had estimated that the beavers would take about a decade to return the dried-out land to streams in the region, but the animals blew away his expectations. By year three, water was back. Ultimately, the project only cost $58,000, which was used to prepare the land for the beavers to come in and do what they do.
Beavers have essentially evolved to be the engineers of nature, transforming their landscape to suit their needs and to protect them from predators. They are quick in the water and can build dams (水堤) to make ponds and wetlands where they can better survive.
The population of beavers in North America was once driven down due to heavy hunting. However, after the desire for beaver hats and coats reduced, the population began to recover. The success of the project has led to a number of other projects using beavers for land restoration through California. Government programs were beginning to take notice and offer training to local people on how to use beavers for wildfire prevention.
28. Why was Ciotii surprised by the project
A. It cost significantly less money. B. It used animals to solve the issue.
C. It took effect quicker than expected. D. It changed the land into a lively plain.
29. How did the beavers reduce the wildfire fuel sources
A. They ate the dry bush. B. They protected dams.
C. They created water bodies. D. They helped the trees grow better.
30. What do we know about beavers in North America
A. They are trained to stop wildfire. B. They were threatened by humans.
C. They got protected for their roles in ecology. D. They are the main solution to the wildfire problem.
31. What is the purpose of this text
A. To present a study on beavers behavior.
B. To illustrate the cause and effect of wildfire.
C. To introduce the benefits of working with animals.
D. To inform the use of beavers in wildfire prevention.
D
To be clear: Food noise has nothing to do with hunger or food shortage, says Lawrence Cheskin, a professor of nutrition and food studies at George Mason University. It’s about being absorbed in thoughts about food.
In an issue of the journal Nutrients, researchers defined food noise as something that can be caused by internal signs such as your stomach growling with hunger or external signs such as seeing or smelling delicious foods. These signs can cause food-related thoughts to start playing on a repetitive cycle.
“Imagine you have a picture chart — think about what percentage of the day is spent thinking about food,” says Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist. “For those with a lot of food noise, 80 to 90 percent of their day is spent thinking about food.” “For those with intrusive food noise, it might affect their sleep, or lead to shame around eating or anxious thoughts,” says Goldman. “It can get in the way of someone being able to function at their best.” By contrast, those with mild food noise may hardly notice it.
Anyone can experience food noise but people with obesity or overweight often struggle with food noise more than other people do, which can make it difficult to lose weight. Other people include those with an eating disorder or disordered eating pattern. Also, if you have a lot of food rules or you’ve been dieting off and on for years, you may be more likely to experience food noise. “There’s a lot of shame and judgment around food noise,” Albers says. “It can impact relationships, leading to social withdrawal, and reduce people’s engagement in other areas of their life.”
Keep in mind, however, that food noise is a common suffering. “Don’t beat yourself up for it. Instead, exercise some self-sympathy,” Goldman suggests. “The way we talk to ourselves matters, so be mindful about what you’re saying to yourself about food noise.”
32. What do we know about the food noise
A. It’s the noise people make while eating.
B. It’s only for people with weight issues.
C. It refers to repeated food thoughts due to signs.
D. It’s related to food shortage and causes hunger.
33. What does the underlined word “intrusive” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. annoying B. inviting C. available D. unnoticeable
34. How does food noise affect people’s life
A. It leads to severe weight gain.
B. It brings about regular eating habits.
C. It results in a lack of social activities.
D. It causes sleep disorders and overeating.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Being kind to yourself is helpful.
B. Food noise is not a serious problem.
C. Talking to others about food noise matters.
D. People should blame themselves for food noise.

People these days are posting about their lives on social media. But what if you’re a private and introverted person like me What if you want to live in the moment instead of sharing every bit of your life To be honest, it’s nobody’s business but your own. ___36___
Escape stalkers (跟踪者).
I’ve been a public person as a jazz vocalist for years. It exposed me to stalkers who felt they knew me, just because I was present everywhere. Needless to say, it brought me much anxiety and stress. At some point I asked myself — is being visible more important than my peace of mind ___37___ The answer is a clear NO. I just want to spend life doing what I love with the people I love.
Protect privacy.
___38___ I need alone time to process what I’m struggling with and honest real talks with the people I trust. I might share a lesson learned from an experience, but now I won’t. I know that by keeping my life private on social media I may miss out on some connections, but I honor and respect the people in my life who value their privacy, so I am being mindful and protect that.
___39___
Another reason I keep my life private is that I prefer to be in the present moment and appreciate it fully. To be on your phone constantly, or to film everything you do, can be quite disrespectful to the people you spend your time with. You lose out on those spontaneous (自发的) moments and a deeper connection. I choose what I share and when I share it, and the rest is for experiencing life without expectations.
Live your life fully, regardless of whether the world knows it or not! ___40___ I just want you to know it’s OK if you don’t.
A. Experience a private life.

Final exams were approaching, and everyone in school was excited about vacations. We were dreaming of far-off destinations, our minds filled with images of thrilling adventures.
After school on Friday, on my way home, I ran into my best friend. Enthusiastic about the vacations, I asked him about his plans. His eyes twinkled brightly as he replied, “I’m going to visit my grandparents with my parents for a week.”
“Don’t you ever get tired of going to the same place year after year I remember, every year, your family takes 7 to 10 days off to head back to your native village,” I asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.
“Oh, not at all! That’s the absolute best time of the year for me! Being with my folks in the village is just amazing.” His face beamed with joy as he continued, "In the village, I get to meet so many wonderful people, and everyone there is so kind and welcoming. Our neighborhood crew is tight! We’re always hanging out together, you know Just running wild, chilling by the lake, or bouncing between each other’s houses. Honestly, I know what really matters about these village trips. It’s not the cool places we see — it’s spending time with the people I love. That’s the real treasure of life.”
His words made me recall my own grandparents. I realized I hadn’t seen them for years. But still, it’s a pleasure to be there. … we had big long gardens and a big multi-story house.
The next day, over breakfast, I mustered up the courage and asked my parents, “Can we visit grandparents this summer after exams ” Dad replied hesitantly, “Oh, that’s unexpected.” Mom was surprised. “Well, you know it gets really hot there this time of year.” After a short pause, Dad gave a small sigh and met my hopeful gaze. “However,” he said, “if you perform well in exams, we’ll make the trip.”
For the next six weeks I threw myself completely into my studies. My mom was amazed by this sudden transformation in me. Soon came the long-awaited exam results.

76. One possible version:
I rushed home and immediately handed my parents my score card and a note with “PLEASE.” This time, they instantly agreed. The next day, we set out for our hometown. Every one, be it relatives or neighbors, greeted us with smiles, treating me like their own son. Every day brought new happiness –- digging with Grandpa in the garden, playing games with cousins until sunset, roaming around familiar streets with loved ones and even joining the local kids in their football matches. The days passed as we had a wonderful time together. Truth be told, everything was more fun in a big family. When departure day came, my heart ached.
I saw my mom had tears in her eyes when leaving them. She wiped them away and smiled, saying, “I didn’t realize how much I missed the village until now. It’s not just a place; it’s where our roots are.” As we drove away, I felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia. I realized that the real adventure wasn’t about exploring far-off places but about reconnecting with family and our heritage. This trip wasn’t just for me; it was a reminder for all of us that family is the true treasure of life. From then on, visiting Grandma and Grandpa became our annual tradition, a time to cherish love, laughter, and the simple joys of being together.
