Mounting evidence suggests that longtime sitting — a main part of modern-day life — is risky to your health, even if you exercise regularly. Based on these findings, doctors advise all adults to sit less and move more. But how often do we need to get up from our chairs And for how long
Few studies have compared multiple options to come up with the answer most office workers want: What is the least amount of activity needed to counteract the health effects of a workday filled with sitting
Now a study by Columbia University exercise physiologists has an answer. Unlike other studies that test one or two activity options, the study tested five different exercise “snacks”, or short bursts of activity after a period of time’s sitting: one minute of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting, one minute after 60 minutes, five minutes every 30, five minutes every 60 and no walking.
The proper amount of movement, the researchers found, was five minutes of walking every 30 minutes. This was the only amount that greatly lowered both blood sugar and blood pressure. In addition, this walking routine had an impressive effect on how the participants responded to large meals, reducing blood sugar spikes (峰值) by 58% compared with sitting all day. Taking a walking break every 30 minutes for one minute also provided modest benefits for blood sugar levels throughout the day, while walking every 60 minutes, either for one minute or five minutes, provided no benefit.
What we know now is that for best health, you need to move regularly at work, in addition to a daily exercise routine. While that may sound impractical, the findings show that even small amounts of walking spread through the work day can greatly lower your risk of heart disease and other chronic (慢性的) illnesses.
24.What does the study by Columbia University focus on
A.What adults should do to keep exercising regularly.
B.When and where we need to sit less and move more.
C.Why longtime sitting every day is risky to our health.
D.How often and how long we need to walk from our chairs.
25.What does the underlined word “counteract” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Reduce. B.Strengthen. C.Add. D.Benefit.
26.Which walking pattern is the MOST useful for health according to the text
A.One minute of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting.
B.Five minutes of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting.
C.One minute of walking after every 60 minutes of sitting.
D.Five minutes of walking after every 60 minutes of sitting.
27.What does the last paragraph show
A.The risks of heart disease and other illnesses.
B.The daily exercise routine suitable for everyone.
C.The suggestions on the health of the office staff.
D.The ways of moving regularly at work every day.

The Internet’s carbon footprint is as bad as air travel. While it is difficult to measure precisely, estimates place it at over two percent of global greenhouse gas emissions—the same as the air travel.
Information may appear to spread around the world unseen to our eyes, but it actually passes through enormous data centers placed strategically about the globe, which store, organize and deliver everyone’s data. These centers are extremely energy intensive. In the EU, they consume close to three percent of its total energy usage and also require lots of water to prevent their computers from overheating. In the US, about a fifth of data centers draw water from already stressed water sources.
A typical spam email(垃圾邮件)emits around 0.03g of CO2 emissions, though longer messages read on a laptop can go all the way up to 26g. Now multiply that by 333 billion(roughly the number of emails that get sent every day in 2022). That puts all those work emails into perspective. One study found if every British adult sent one less “thank you” email a day, it would save 16, 433 tons of carbon a year. It even predicted that the ICT industry could account for up to a fifth of the world’s energy consumption by 2025.
However, there are measures that we can take to reduce our digital carbon footprint. For instance, you can unsubscribe from marketing and other spam emails and only subscribe to newsletters that you still regularly read. Have regular data checks where you delete old contact lists and other documents that no longer have any use. Keep a clean inbox and delete emails you no longer need.
28.Why does the author make a comparison in the beginning
A.To present the digital carbon footprint.
B.To emphasize the importance of air travel.
C.To advise people not to travel by airplane.
D.To inform the disadvantages of the Internet.
29.What can we infer about data centers
A.It enjoys a wide popularity.
B.It has various kinds of functions.
C.It causes large energy consumption.
D.It has quite a complex mode of operation.
30.What’s the purpose of mentioning the figures in Paragraph 3
A.To draw the readers’ attention.
B.To illustrate a certain information.
C.To highlight the change of CO2 emission.
D.To stress the importance of reducing CO2 emission.
31.What’s the author’s attitude towards reducing digital carbon footprint
A.Neutral. B.Optimistic.
C.Unfavorable. D.Concerned.

This past January, Captain Preet Chandi set foot on a historic and decidedly icy trail, becoming the first woman of color to reach the South Pole alone, without assistance. While others might have been content to make history with this singular accomplishment, “Polar Preet” Chandi is not one to rest on her achievements. The journey to the South Pole was merely “phase one” of a larger and even more extraordinary goal for the adventurous British Army officer.
“For phase two”, the 33-year-old has set her sights on crossing Antarctica — once again doing the journey alone and unsupported to become the first woman to achieve this goal.
On November 14, Chandi departed from Hercules Inlet, an ice-filled bay at the southwestern section of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf bordering the Weddell Sea in Antarctica. Her goal is to reach Reedy Glacier within 75 days, a coast-to-coast journey consisting of roughly 1,100 miles. And “roughly” is the key word here — she’ll be pulling a sled (雪橇) with equipment weighing about 264 pounds altogether, and she’ll be doing so in temperatures that can sink to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
Her journey thus far required years of training. Prior to her 700-mile South Pole journey, she prepared by attending a polar survival course in Norway. She continued her training back home in the UK by dragging tires, the closest thing to pulling a sled, and a month-long practice run in Greenland. Ultimately, Chandi went on to finish her first South Pole expedition in 40 days, eight full days ahead of schedule.
In addition to setting records of human endurance in extreme conditions, Chandi tries to inspire others in her day-to-day work.
Chandi will be posting interval (间隔) voice blog updates of her phase two progress on her website, , where a live tracking map will also provide her current location at every point along her journey.
“Nothing is impossible. I’ve always had this idea that I can achieve something great, something that allows me to be a role model,” Chandi shared on her blog.
32.Why does Chandi want to cross Antarctica
A.To stick to a promise. B.To take further challenges.
C.To raise money for poor women. D.To realize her childhood dream.
33.Why does the author stress the word “roughly” in Paragraph 3
A.To indicate that there are more challenges faced by Chandi.
B.To hide the author’s bad memory of numbers.
C.To explain that there is no proper word to describe the journey.
D.To show there is no official figure about the distance to Antarctica.
34.What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A.Chandi got trained by pulling sleds.
B.The journey to the South Pole was eventful.
C.Survival training was a hard process.
D.Chandi made full preparations for her adventure.
35.Which words can best describe Chandi
A.Inspiring and friendly. B.Active and creative.
C.Adventurous and modest. D.Confident and determined.
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Vacations are an essential part of every person’s life. Following long seasons of hard work, it is well deserved to get away from busy schedules and enjoy nature.
While tourism is good, it has its dark side. Besides emission-based pollution, tourism also contributes heavily to plastic pollution. This kind of pollution can be reduced by advocating for sustainable vacationing. 36 When it comes to ecotourism, your inspiration for others to take action is equally important.
37 If a park says no to feeding wildlife, simply avoid feeding them. Most times, what we interpret as affection for wildlife puts them at risk. If parks allowed every person to feed animals, chances of the animals dying from food poisoning are high.
In our efforts to protect nature, we may fail to appreciate other people’s cultures. The local communities in the Amazon are a part of the forest’s life. When you visit such local communities, you may find them participating in some practices that may seem unfriendly to the ecosystem or wildlife. 38 Trying to listen and interact with communities opens more doors to bring in change than criticism does.
Most people are not sustainability conscious._ 39 We have many ways to be sustainable and one is sharing your ideas. The sustainable option you choose may seem absurd to another person. However, sharing your experience may help others have different perspectives.
At the end of the day, sustainable vacationing should help you not only reduce negative environmental impact but also awaken society to such a reality. 40 However, every small step contributes to a more sustainable world.
A.No rule fits all situations concerning this topic.
B.The reason for this is that they think it cannot be achieved.
C.Protect our lives from potential danger by following regulations.
D.The best way to care for nature and wildlife is to follow the rules.
E.Instead of being critical, take your time to learn from their practices.
F.An ecotourist focuses on protecting nature, culture and social practices.
G.The term ecotourism is often used interchangeably with sustainable tourism.

Eric was a nine-year-old boy who lived with his single mother, Stacey and sister, Lily. They lived a hard life. Eric felt bad for their situation but worse for himself, especially in school.
Eric’s leather boots were worn out. They didn’t protect his feet from the rain, and his socks became totally wet as water went through the holes in his shoes. Stacey attempted to fix the holes but it was no use. Eric still walked to school with that pair of broken shoes. How much he wished he could also have new comfortable and expensive shoes his classmates wore!
One day, Eric returned from school and complained to Stacey, “It was raining today. Water has leaked into my shoes again. I hate my boots! Why can’t you get me new ones ” Stacey was sad and helpless. “I spent our last savings on your sister’s medicine. She’s sick. Eric you know that. You need to act like a responsible big brother!” she answered. Tears welled up in Eric’s eyes. “I hate you!” he shouted. “You only care about Lily! You don’t love me!” Then he cried and ran to his room.
After preparing dinner, Stacey went to his room with his dinner plate. “I’m sorry, Eric,” she whispered to comfort him. “We’re going through a very tough journey recently. But I’ll get you new shoes in the future.” However, Eric refused to listen to her.
The next day, when Eric went to class, he took his seat quietly and hid his feet under his chair, as usual. He was embarrassed to show his boots. As the math teacher Mrs Fletcher entered the class, all the students greeted her. “Today, we have a very special friend with us,” she smiled. “Everyone, please welcome Ben, your new classmate.” Soon after, a boy with a pair of crutches(拐杖)entered. The new boy only had one leg. Eric was shocked. He and all his classmates thought how unlucky Ben was and that he must be very shy and sad.

【原文】 M: Clara Barton was born on December 25th, 1821. When the Civil War began in 1861, she heard of stories of wounded soldiers. She felt she needed to do something to help them, so she urged people to donate bandages and medicine and delivered these supplies to the battlefield. Clara didn’t stop helping when the war was over. She led a group to search for missing soldiers. This group also worked to identify soldiers killed or missing. After four years of this work, Clara moved to Switzerland, where she first learned about a group called the Red Cross. This group worked to help people who were suffering during times of war. In 1873, Clara returned to the United States. In 1881 she started an American branch of the Red Cross. She served as its first president for over 20 years. As the result of Clara’s hard work and leadership, the Red Cross grew. Today, it also helps people suffering as a result of earthquakes, fires, floods, and other disasters. Clara Barton died on April 12, 1912, but her great contribution, the American Red Cross, lives on.

67.参考范文:
At that moment, Mrs Fletcher asked Ben to introduce himself. To everyone’s surprise, Ben walked to the platform cheerfully and confidently. After greeting them in a joyful voice, he shared many hobbies and his loving family. At the end of his speaking, Ben added, “Even though I have lost a leg, I never feel bad for my situation. I’m grateful for what I have.” All of the students were touched by Ben’s words and clapped for his courage and optimism from the bottom of their hearts.
Inspired by Ben, Eric realized he should appreciate what he had. After school, he gladly walked home. When reaching home, he knocked at Mom’s door and apologized sincerely, “Mom, I’m sorry I shouted at you. I should thank you for everything you have done for me and I will take good care of Lily like a responsible big brother.” Hearing what he said, Stacey hugged Eric tightly, with relieved tears pouring down her cheeks silently. From that day on, Eric became confident and didn’t hide his feet under his chair any more.
