Dear Tom,
With the World Reading Day coming, I am writing to share some related information with you. In a gesture to trigger students’ passion for reading and enrich our school life, our school held a series of wonderful reading-related activities last week.
To begin with, we had a book fair on the playground where different classes set up their booths, displaying a wide range of books. We could wander around, flip through the pages, and even exchange books with each other. What's more, several well-known local authors were invited to give lectures, who talked about their writing experiences and the significance of reading in their lives.
Personally, I've reaped great benefits from these activities. Not only have I discovered some new books that I'm really eager to dive into but also I have realized that reading is a journey of self-improvement.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Mum decided to host a family meeting. She announced that she would quit doing the chores. The words literally shocked the twins and their dad, who stared at each other in confusion. The whole house was enveloped in absolute silence. The next day, mum did put her words into action. Days turned into weeks, and everyone seemed to turn a blind eye to the chores, which gave rise to the worsening situation in the house. Dust accumulated on shelves and dirty clothes piled up. The once warm and clean house was gone forever.
Living in such a messy house wasn’t much fun. When the other three eventually couldn’t bear it any more, they reached an agreement to make joint efforts to change it. Dad began to cut the grass in the garden while the twins offered to clean the table. Of course, they found they were actually good at doing chores. And it was not until then did they realize the hardships mother endured when doing all the stuff. From then on, the family took turns to do housework and make concerted efforts to make their home a pleasant place to live.

W:Well, that’s true. But we haven’t even seen it yet.And I didn’t know we were looking for a new house.

M:We’d have to sell our house,of course.
W:Our house is only valued at 75,000.
M:Yes, but we only owe about 30,000 on the mortgage. If we sold it,we would have 45,000 dollars to use.

M:Any reason
W:Yes.If your sitting room isn’t big enough, you put in a very big television, that will be bad for your eyes, but a smaller size TV can also pick up good programs.
M:Um,that’s quite true.I’ll think about it.
W:You’d better make a quick decision because the price may go up now.

M:Good evening, class. Before we begin tonight’s lesson,I want to remind you about next Thursday’s mid- term.Remember to review chapters one through eight in the book. You will be responsible for knowing all of the information in the chapters plus all of the other topics we have discussed in class. Last week,we talked about the importance of using note cards and visual aids to prepare your speeches.Tonight I’ll tell you the details that could help you with your speech delivery. Please take careful notes. The first and perhaps the most important thing of good speech delivery is eye contact. It is extremely important, especially in the English-speaking world, to make eye contact with all your audience. This may be very difficult for you if you come from a culture where making direct eye contact is a sign of disrespect. But,you really need to practice this skill until you are comfortable looking directly at all of your audience members when you are speaking to them. Please note that you need to look at the entire audience. Please don’t direct your attention to just one person or one side of the room, and don’t stare into the eyes of anyone for a long time.2024~2025学年度高一下学期期中测试

Edinburgh is famous for its many museums where you can learn its rich history.
Museum on the Mound
Located in the heart of Edinburgh’s city center, this appealing museum takes a fresh look at money—and much, much more. You will see coins and banknotes from over the ages, including the first Scottish banknote printed in 1727. Particularly interesting is the “tour” around the eleven Earthscapes. It is educational fun for the whole family and can serve as a good introduction to concepts surrounding the formation of the planet and the creatures we share the earth with.

With millions of riders on the road, China’s food delivery industry has long prided itself on being able to reach every corner of the country. Now, Meituan is even offering to deliver takeout to the Great Wall—dropped off not by a worker on an electric bike, but by a drone(无人机) sliding from the sky.
For the millions of tourists who visit the Great Wall each year, the drone delivery service offers a new level of convenience. Visitors can now order meals and drinks via their smartphones, with drones delivering their orders to their locations on the wall, which eliminates the need for tourists to leave their spots, allowing them to fully engage in the experience of visiting the Great Wall without interruptions.
The Great Wall drone route extends from a nearby hotel rooftop to a watchtower on the southern part of Badaling, an area previously free of commercial facilities. “That’s where drones can help,” Yan Yan, public affairs director of Meituan’s drone business, told CCTV. “Through drones, we can make trips that take 50 minutes on foot in five minutes and deliver heat relief objects and emergency supplies to visitors.”
Once an order is received, a Meituan worker will pick it up from a nearby store and bring it to the hotel rooftop, where it will be weighed and packaged. An operator then ties the package to the drone, which will fly on autopilot to the watchtower, where another worker waits to receive it and hands it over to the customer.
The company will initially offer free delivery while it tests the service, and claims that pricing will stay similar to that of regular deliveries afterward.
Meituan’s drone delivery at the Great Wall is another example of how drone technology can be used for the last mile. The program could serve as a model for similar services in other tourist heavy or geographically challenging locations worldwide and have a promising future.
24. What does the underlined word “eliminates” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Ignores. B. Identifies. C. Removes. D. Satisfies.
25. How does Yan Yan sound about the drone delivery
A. Critical. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
26. What are the main features of Meituan’s drone delivery service at the Great Wall
A. Traditional but high cost. B. Pricy but dependable.
C. Dangerous and time consuming. D. Convenient and innovative.
27. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the packages are attached to the drones.
B. How customers’ order information is received.
C. How operators control the routes of the drones.
D. How the drone delivery service is carried out.

Pets may seem like something of a luxury (奢侈品). In return for a lifetime of food and love, they don’t seem to offer practical value. When was the last time you saw a pet dog helping a farmer in a field or taking groceries off the car So what do pets really give us Well, that depends on who you ask.
It turns out, some people may like animals by nature-likely because animals first tricked their way into our ancestors’ lives by offering a very real service.
Somewhere between 15,000 and 5,000 years ago, humans started domesticating (驯化) animals. Separating them from wild animals was necessary, or it would have slowed down the domestication. So, to make sure the wild stayed wild and the domestic stayed domestic, a few fortunate animals were allowed to live indoors and more closely alongside humans.
Eventually those protected animals did what animals do. They formed a close relationship with people. People with an understanding of animals and animal keeping developed more quickly than those without, who had to continue to depend on hunting to get meat.
The very same genes (基因) that spread among those early farmers make some people more likely to keep their first cat or dog today. Early farmers valued a real service provided by animals, like guarding crops, farming and providing food. Over time, this valuing have become an appreciation for animals in general.
Maybe that’s why efforts to create robotic dogs have not become popular yet. A robotic dog may walk like a dog and bark like a dog and even look like a dog. But our genes tell us it isn’t a dog. Will we be able to appreciate and connect with this creature the way our ancestors did with real animals It’s hard to imagine the robotic dog being able to learn that very old trick.
28. What helped animals domestication
A. Forming a close connection with animals. B. Keeping wild and domestic animals apart.
C. Making sure the wild stayed domestic. D. Allowing more animals to live indoors.
29. What happened to the animal-keeping people later
A. They lived a better life. B. They depended on hunting.
C. They created robotic dogs. D. They quit keeping animals.
30. Why are robotic dogs unpopular
A. They are unable to play tricks. B. They do not bark like real dogs.
C. They fail to connect with humans. D. They are unfriendly to humans.
31. Where do people’s love for pets come from
A. Their birthplaces. B. Their genes. C. Their education. D. Their work.
D
California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor.
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick Mclntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources.
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, Mclntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).
Since the 1930s, Mclntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B. The increasing variety of California big trees.
C. The distribution of big trees in California forests.
D. The influence of farming on big trees in California.
33. Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees
A. Ecological studies of forests. B. Banning woodcutting.
C. Limiting housing development. D. Fire control measures.
34. What is a major cause of the water shortage according to Mclntyre
A. Inadequate snowmelt. B. A longer dry season.
C. A warmer climate. D. Dampness of the air.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone
B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests
D. Patrick Mclntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California

The power of positive thinking
Is your glass of milk half-full or half-empty 36 Do you focus on the positives (a half-full glass) or the negatives (a half-empty one) Thinking positively, with a belief that most things will turn out well, is called optimism — and it’s known to boost your well-being. The good news is that everybody can learn to think more positively.
37
Research shows that people who are optimistic and think positively tend to experience less stress and cope well when faced with life’s challenges. People who are more pessimistic (expect that the worst will happen) may find it hard to believe that these challenges will pass.
Worrying is like a fire alarm.
Everybody can worry from time to time. Worrying can help to keep you safe — if you were never worried and were overly positive about how things would turn out, you wouldn’t recognize risks. “ 38 It’s like a fire alarm,” says child psychotherapist Rachel Melville-Thomas. “The trouble is that sometimes it goes off when there isn’t a huge danger to face.” When this happens, you can feel anxious and hopeless about what lies ahead.
Learn to think positively.
Optimism is shaped by your genes which carry characteristics(继承) inherited from your parents and by what happens to you. 39 Research has shown that it can help to draw or write an outcome that’s positive, for example, an image of you playing guitar, having passed your next grade. 40
A. Your genes will in turn help obtain it.
B. This question is difficult to answer.
C. Why is thinking positively good for you
D. Imagining this can motivate you to work to achieve it.
E. Worrying is our brain warning us of something threatening.
F. However, whatever your starting point is, everyone can learn it.
G. This is often used to test people’s outlook in a situation.

The Trouble With Chores (家庭杂务)
The twins, Jenna and Jeff, were good at most things. Their dad was good at most things, too. But there was one thing the twins and Dad were not good at—that was chores. It wasn’t that Dad and the twins didn’t want to do their chores. It was just that they always seemed to have reasons not to do them. And they had such good excuses.
“You’re right, my dear,” said Mum. “The grass does need cutting. But a spider has spun a wonderful web on the lawn mower and I haven’t the heart to put all her hard work to waste.”
“Mum,” said Jenna, “I know it’s my week to put up my cards. It’s just that I’m waiting for them to dry. They’ll be easier to scoop up that way.”
“Mum,” said Jeff, “may I skip setting the table tonight There’s a TV show on the Ice Age, and I have to do a report on the Beast of Baluchistan.”
There were also the endless quarrels about who did what and who got the easy job. Mum sighed. If only Dad and the twins were as good at doing their chores as they were at arguing about them, life would be easier. Talking of chores, Mum thought instead of pushing them for chores, it would be a lot easier to do them herself. And that was what she did. She put away all cards and set and cleared the table. She chased the dust bunnies from under the furniture and cleaned up the twins’ messy room.
The twins did pick up and put away things occasionally. Dad did cut the grass once in a while. Not surprisingly, things began to slide. Everybody got a little unhappy, especially Mum, who spent much time doing chores. Something had to be done. But what
