第一节
Dear Lewis,
I have received your letter saying you want to bring a few gifts for your
mother that symbolize the Chinese culture.
In my opinion, you can buy the following two presents. First of all, cheongsam,
a very beautiful traditional dress for Chinese women, can show thereal beauty of
a woman, thus I am sure that your mother will like it very much. What's more, the
Chinese knot, which is pretty decoration popular with Chinese, is usually hung in
the sitting room of our home. It stands for unity and good luck. Meanwhile, I'm
convinced that it will bring goodluck and happiness to your family.
Have a safe trip and remember me to your mother.
第二节
Curious, Maria opened the note and started reading it. The note, written by
her neighboring dog owner, Angela, said she had noticed Chips crying a lot
when Maria was away. Angela, in Corote’s voice, suggested they play together
when Maria was not home. This way, Chips wouldn’t feel lonely. Maria was
deeply moved and felt relieved after reading the note. Instead of expressing
discontent, her kind neighbor was really understanding and tried to offer support.
Maria felt she needed to meet Angela and her dog.
With Chips following her, Maria knocked at her neighbor’s door. The door
opened and Maria saw a woman, who must be Angela, smiling at her. Corote,
Angela’s dog, followed her and stared at Chips happily. The two dogs
immediately hit it off. A pleasant atmosphere was created when Maria and
Angela were chatting. In the process, Maria also got valuable advice from
Angela on how to keep Chips company. Through their shared experiences and
the joy their pets brought them, Maria and her neighbor formed a deep
connection and their lives became very colorful and meaningful.

competition.

M: It truly is. Give it a shot!
Text 10 人工智能与写作
W: For many book writers, artificial intelligence (AI) is a threat to their work and the very
idea of creativity. More than 10,000 writers supported an open letter about the issue from
the Authors Guild this summer. The letter urged AI companies not to use copyrighted works
without permission or payment.
At the same time, AI is a story that can be told, and no longer exists only in science fiction.
Helen Phillips is the writer of the book HUM. It tells of a wife and mother who loses her
job because of AI. Phillips said there is a hope in AI for gaining all knowledge, but there is a
“fear of being replaced by non-human intelligence”.
Ryan Doherty is a director at Celadon Books. It recently agreed to publish Fred Lunzker’s
book Sike, featuring an AI doctor. “We’ve been seeing more and more about AI in book
proposals,” Doherty said.
Other AI-related books include Do You Remember Being Born . It tells of a poet who agrees to
work with an AI poetry company. There is also In Our Likeness. It tells about a government
worker and a fact-checking program with the power to change facts.
Some writers are not just writing about AI. They are also openly working with it.
Earlier this year, Stephen Marche used AI to write the short book Death of an Author.
Simon Rich worked with the AI program “code-davinci-002” to create I Am Code.

Most Famous Libraries in the World
Trinity College Library
Designed by Thomas Burgh, the library is the largest in Ireland.
Construction on the Long Room, the library’s 65-meter-long main hall, began
in 1712 and lasted 20 years. The original structure only had books on the lower
level, but when the library’s shelves were filled in the 1850s, the ceiling
was raised to accommodate even more books. Today the Long Room holds 200,000
of the library’s oldest books.
Stuttgart City Library
Opened in 2011, the German library is a splendid light-gray cube consisting
of glass blocks designed by Eun Young Yi. Inside it, you’ll find an airy
central room, above which sits a multi-story stepped reading room lined with
bookshelves. The library towers over the nearby buildings.
Library of Parliament
Taking the form of a Victorian Gothic chapter house complete with 16 flying
buttresses, the 1876 Library of Parliament is one of Canada’s prized
architectural treasures — it’s on the ten-dollar bill. Architects Thomas
Fuller and Chilion Jones took inspiration from the British Museum Reading Room
for the structure, lining the central hall with delicate wood shelves and wood
carvings.
Rampur Raza Library
Founded in the late 18th century, the Indian library is home to a massive
collection of Islamic and Asian texts and objects. The pink structure that
houses the collection today was built in 1904 by Nawab Hamid Ali Khan as a

Half a year ago, Lacey Scott was shopping for supplies at a local pet store
in Kansas City, Missouri. When she was in that location, a bored face of a
little goldfish attracted her attention, and she didn’t stop staring at it
the entire time she was there.
Lying at the bottom of a dark fish tank, the sad fish didn’t appear to
have much of a wish to survive. Lacey learned from a store clerk that the fish
was ten years old and had spent a long time in that depressing tank.
“I couldn’t take my mind off him. I couldn’t bear the thought of a fish
who had wasted so much of its life and would end up dying in a pet store,”
Lacey said.
Lacey approached the store owner and asked if she could take the small fish
home with her.
What no one realized was that the small fish’s best days were still to
come: all it needed was a second chance.
Lacey returned home and built a pond out of various materials for the fish
she named “Monstro”. She changed his water every day to keep it clean and
fresh, and fed him with only the fish food. Monstro, on the other hand, did
not appear to be enjoying his new living environment, not even moving to have
his meal.
Despite this, Lacey did not give up on him and continued to provide him
with specialized care. “I found him swimming for small amounts of time after
a month,” Lacey said. “And it was at that point that I realized things began
to change. ”
Monstro’s body began to change as well. The gray scales (鱼鳞) that made him seem unwell began to change colors. His small body began to shine, showing that his condition had improved greatly.
Lacey put Monstro into a much larger tank once he had fully recovered,
where he continues to live in the greatest possible way.
24.Why did the goldfish at the pet store catch Lacey Scott’s attention
A.He was a rare type of goldfish.
B.He looked sad and was tired of life.
C.He looked energetic, colorful and lovely.
D.He was so old that he could hardly move.

A.He tried to jump out of the pond.
B.He adapted to his new life very quickly.
C.He seemed not to be fond of his new home.
D.He appeared to be dead and floated on the surface.
26.When did Lacey start to find Monstro’s change
A.The fish began to swim in the pond.
B.The fish started to eat a lot of food.
C.The fish’s scales began to change colors.
D.The fish came to the surface to breathe.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.A goldfish bought by a woman recovers from his injury.
B.A woman builds a new pond for an active goldfish.
C.A kind woman saves a goldfish from being killed.
D.A goldfish adopted by a woman starts a new life.

An afternoon nap(午睡)is one of the joys of life, although too much napping could signal all is not well. In some cultures, people will have a daily nap — this is fine. The warning comes when people start sleeping during the daytime, when they did not before. There is certainly a good reason to believe that daytime sleepiness — as in the Alzheimer's study — can be a marker of an underlying condition.
For most people, napping during the day is mainly a sign that you are not
getting enough sleep at night, says Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert. "If you
feel sleepy during the day, you should think about taking a nap. That is what
the body needs — it doesn't need to be kept awake with caffeine, it needs
sleep. "The feeling to notice is "sleepiness", he says, not "tiredness", which
could be more psychological and linked to stress.
So how do you nap well The key thing, says Stanley, is how long your nap
lasts. Choose either a 20-or 90-minute nap. "When you fall asleep, you'll
quickly go through the lighter stages of sleep into your first period of deep
sleep. You don't want to wake up in deep sleep because that's when you wake
and feel worse than you did before. "Napping for 20 minutes means you will wake
up before you go into deep sleep; napping for 90 minutes means you'll complete
a sleep cycle.
Once you factor in the time it takes to fall asleep — some people are
better at napping than others but, says Stanley, "a healthy adult will fall
asleep in between 5 and 12 minutes" — you can set an alarm, allowing a 30- to
40-minute period for a short nap, and up to two hours for a longer one.
A good time to nap is during the body's natural dip in the afternoon,
between 2 pm and 4 pm. "You don't really want to be napping much past that because then you are going to be eating into your night-time sleep," Stanley says. The point, he stresses, is to get good night-time sleep, which would ensure you probably don't need to nap at all.
28. What does an afternoon nap indicate for most people
A. Caffeine addiction.
B. Psychological stress.
C. Insufficient night sleep.
D. Potential physical illness.
29. What is the key to a good nap
A. Duration. B. Surroundings. C. Health. D. Stages.
30. What does the underlined word "that" in the last paragraph refer to
A. A 30- to 40- minute period.
B. Between 2 pm and 4 pm.
C. Between 5 and 12 minutes.
D. A 20- to 90-minute period.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Why to phase a nap
B. When to take a good nap
C. What to learn from a nap
D. How to have a successful nap

The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve, located near India
western tip, is the proud — and only — home of the Asiatic lion. By the early
1900s, however, their populations had decreased for home loss and hunting,
leaving fewer than 50 known individuals alive. Though their numbers have risen
over the past several decades — climbing to around 670 in 2020, a successful
story — the lions are still considered endangered.
One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions’ future is to track them,
a hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns (图案) that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.
In 2019, Banerjee, who worked for Indias National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy (精准). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. “It will be a fantastic tool for long-term lion monitoring,” says Banerjee. He adds, “It could help forest officials arrive at a more accurate estimate (评估) of Gir’s lion population. In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information — how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead. ”
Despite the advantages, Baneijee also adds his worries. He suggests certain
rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen. “Where tools like
SIMBA really shine”, he says, “is in helping researchers develop monitoring
plans that are keys to the protection of at-risk animals,” he says, “otherwise,
all your efforts will be in vain. ”
32. What is the greatest difficulty in protecting Asiatic lions
A. Stopping them from being killed.
B. Keeping track of them.
C. Protecting their living environment.
D. Increasing their population.
33. How does SIMBA help researchers
A. By locating lions’ homes.
B. By tracking other animals.
C. By monitoring the animal stealers.
D. By providing accurate information.
34. What’s Baneijee’s opinion about the AI program
A. It needs to be widely used.
B. It has saved the at-risk animals.
C. Its possible risks should be aware of.
D. Its disadvantages should be ignored.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Application of AI on Protecting Animals.
B. The AI Program for the Endangered Asiatic Lions.
C. The Measures of Protecting Asiatic Lions.
D. The Biggest Challenge of the AI system.

It is likely that you've heard that the pitter-pattering (噼啪声) of raindrops can help people fall asleep. There's also research that supports the idea that rain sounds are a useful sleep aid. Here's what to know.
36
Rain sounds mask other sharper noises in your environment. Think of a dripping faucet (水龙头) in the other room —in silence, it could be very annoying. With a masking background of wind in the leaves, a soft rain, or some gentle waves playing on a speaker, the drip would never be detected. 37 .
Rain sounds might literally hit the right frequencies
By masking background sounds, rain tracks might seem like they're just
ordinary white noise ——but they aren't. Named after colors, white noise is
an umbrella term for a variety of sounds. Rain sounds are considered pink noise,
which is characterized by louder sounds at a low frequency and softer sounds
at high frequencies. 38 . But this may not be the case for everyone. Rain sounds have a calming effect
Apart from helping people fall asleep, rain sounds can be straight-up relaxing. It may be explained by the fact that they're a natural sound and natural sounds are psychologically beneficial. 39 . For example, people exposed to nature sounds in a 2017 study had an increased nerve response, which means that the calming part of their nervous system was activated by these tracks.
Rain sounds could be meat or poison
40 . Different sounds will bring out different responses depending on the individual. One person's gentle rain is others' flood worry or need to go to the bathroom. Similarly, gentle rain with distant thunder is calming for some and alarming for others. Will they work for you There's only one way to find out!
A. Rain sounds hide other noises
B. Rain sounds are a universal tool
C. White noise makes people fall asleep quickly
D. So rain sounds can create a calming background “music”
E. Rain sounds might help someone, but they're not for everyone
F. Pink noise in particular can improve sleep in healthy individuals
G. The benefits include increased learning capacity and reduced anxiety

For most people, adopting a pet is one of the best decisions that they can
ever make in their lives. In addition to giving an animal a permanent (永久的) home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet brings more happiness than expected.
For someone like Maria Luiza Valcazara, having a pet was very suitable.
She was all alone after moving to a new apartment in Brazil, and her solitary
(独居的) life made her feel lonely.
So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take
him home. Maria thought that Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that
she had been experiencing from living all alone.
Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded.
However, as Maria had to work during the day, she was worried about leaving
Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his crying would
upset her neighbors.
One night, when she returned home, she considered her fears were confirmed.
There, outside her door, was a package with a folded note attached to it.
Marin knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted
(驱逐) from her new apartment because of Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he made too much noise whenever she was away. Maria was scared and wondered who could have left it at the door because she had little contact with the people in the building.
However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it
wasn’t addressed to her but to her dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by
another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few toys
for pets.
