During the last few weeks, I spent numerous hot nights standing beside or on my bed, trying to catch mosquitoes in my room. After my friend kept hearing about my nightly adventures, he showed up with a gift one morning: a mosquito net. It was huge, white and held the promise of a good night's sleep.
I asked my father for instructions to hang it up, which he emailed in great detail—thinking I'd be able to turn the screw on which to hang the net into the ceiling. That didn't quite work out.
Luckily, a plumber(水电工) happened to come to my house that day. After examining the net and my ceiling, he assessed it wasn't going to happen by hand. "You'll need an electric drill." Back at home, I started drilling but seemed to be unable to get through the ceiling. My dad got on speakerphone and listened to what it sounded like. After three minutes, he told me to stop. I might be hitting iron and the last thing I wanted to do was to mess up the drill. "We'll do it after I come back next week," he said. "Just be patient."

Bamber's method, known as diversionary feeding, involves leaving meat near capercaillie habitats during the breeding(繁殖) season. The goal is to provide predators like pine martens and badgers—both protected species—with an easier meal, reducing the chances of them attacking capercaillie nests. This approach helps protect capercaillies without harming predators.
Initial trials have been promising, showing an 83% reduction in nest predation in areas where meat was provided. However, this is just one of many strategies needed to save the species. Other efforts include educating the public to avoid disturbing the birds, particularly in places like the Cairngorms National Park, where dogs and hikers can unintentionally stress the birds or disturb their habitats.
Carolyn Robertson, manager of the Cairngorms Capercaillie Project, works to minimize human disturbances. He said, "Dogs, even on leads, can cause capercallies to feel threatened. Public awareness campaigns have helped local dog owners understand the importance of keeping their pets under control. Researchers at Columbia University have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) method that can accurately predict gene activity in any human cell, essentially revealing the cell's inner mechanisms. Detailed in the latest issue of Nature, this system has the potential to change how scientists study cancer, genetic disorders, and other diseases.
"Predictive generalizable computational models allow to uncover biological processes in a fast and accurate way. These methods can effectively conduct large-scale(大规模的) computational experiments, boosting and guiding traditional experimental approaches," says Raul Rabadan, senior author of the new paper.
Traditional biological methods show how cells function or respond to changes, but they lack the ability to predict these processes. Recent advances in AI and massive biological data collections are making this shift possible. However, using AI to predict gene activity inside cells has been a greater challenge—until now.
Rabadan's team developed an AI model trained on gene expression data from over 1.3 million normal human cells. Unlike earlier models trained on limited data, this system uses genome sequences(基因组序列) and accessibility data to predict which genes are active in any cell. The process is similar to how language models like MindLink, an AI chat tool, work: It learns patterns from data and applies them to new situations. Testing showed the model could accurately predict gene activity in cell types it had not encountered, matching experimental results closely.
The researchers applied the AI model to study pediatric leukemia, a childhood cancer caused by inherited mutations(遗传变异). The model predicted how these mutations disturb critical processes in cells, a finding later confirmed through experiments. This understanding highlights the specific mechanisms driving the disease. The AI model could also reveal unexplored regions of the genome, often linked to cancer. These "dark" regions do not code for proteins but may play key roles in disease.
Already, Rabadan is working with researchers at Columbia and other universities, exploring different cancers, from brain to blood cancers, learning the grammar of regulation in normal cells, and how cells change in the process of cancer development.
