Artwork — Galloping Horse
It was painted during the Second Battle of Changsha in 1941, when Xu was in Malaysia, holding an art exhibition to raise funds for the war. He hoped that we could repeat the victory of the previous battle. He used the horse as a metaphor for the Chinese people who resisted the invasion and oppression.
The painting shows a horse galloping from a distance, with its legs crossed and one of them lifted in the air. Despite its thinness, the horse has a lot of force and energy.

Artwork — Lotus flowers
Zhang Daqian created this painting in 1941, during the War of Resistance Against Japan, and gave it to Chairman Mao as a gift. He used them to express his patriotic passion and his pursuit of freedom. He also admired Chairman Mao as a noble and virtuous person, and wanted to show his respect and gratitude.
The painting shows two large lotus leaves, gracefully waving in the wind, and two delicate white lotus blossoms, one fully bloomed and the other budding (发芽). The lotus flowers are symbols of purity, elegance, and perseverance in Chinese culture.
