A few years ago, we bought a Lego Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) for my dad’s birthday, hoping to combine his love for architecture with family time.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered around the large dining table to build the model. We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with precision in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction book. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts producing good results, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the colored bricks on the building’s floor, our conversation too took a turn.
We were amazed by how complex the model was and its instruction book. We realized the book itself was a work of art, beautiful, but also surprisingly detailed and clear. It provided us with the comfort of certainty. We knew if we followed all the instructions, we would end up with a model that looked exactly like the picture on the box. If we made a mistake, all we had to do was to repeat our steps and start again.
Life, however, does not ft together so neatly and rarely provides us with such clear instructions. We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and actions and choices never taken. Dad reflected on a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, on the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the expert architects doing the assembling (组装), but out in the world, we were the ones being assembled. We think we’re in control, but our choices are shaped by forces beyond our control. In the face of uncertainty, we have to proceed, trusting both in the process and the end result.
Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed Lego model, which brings forth a sense of happiness and comfort. It reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we lived it.

In this period of anxiety about the size of our waists and what we consume, simple dietary rules are appealing. “Eat like our ancestors” is a particularly catchy slogan (口号) to live by.
But who are these ancestors we are supposed to follow Are they our great-great-grandparents,
cooking healthy things Or are they hairy animals we imagine “cavemen” to be The popular ancient diet blames modem health problems on the birth of agriculture, claiming that we should stick to eating meat, nuts and berries.
This kind of stone age trend is based on the false assumption that palaeolithic (旧石器时代的) peoples all ate the same food, regardless of their location. Nevertheless, England’s 900-year-old Cheddar Man would not have eaten the same foods as his contemporaries on the Kenyan plain. The amount of meat peoples ate, and how much was obtained by hunting, are also up for debate.
Moreover, the stone age trend is focused on what’s perceived to be good for our bodies, without any concern for the rest of nature, including other humans whose livelihoods are threatened by western over-consumption. Were I to eat like my Punjabi farming great-grandparents, my diet would be based on the wheat and milk products that people in the Punjab have relied on for probably at least the last two thousand years. But delicious and “original” as it might be for me to follow its lead, the morals of industrially farmed milk products in the 21st century make the situation more confusing and complicated.
Now, probably more than ever before, what we eat connects us to the fate of other beings, human and non-human, and to the fate of our planet. A dogmatic (武断的) approach to this would be a mistake. Better to preserve what’s worth keeping and remain clear-eyed about our cooking past, much of which is unknowable, immoral and impossible to follow in any case.

Animals hibernate (冬眠) to conserve energy during cold weather or when food becomes scarce, slowing their heart rate and dropping their body temperature to as low as 5℃. This is only survivable if their blood continues to flow efficiently and supply oxygen to the body.
We already know that red blood cells change shape to fit different pressures and blood vessel sizes. To investigate if something like this happens in the cells of hibernating animals to keep blood flowing, Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald in Germany and his colleagues turned to bats. They analyzed hundreds of thousands of red blood cells from common noctule bats, which hibernate and Egyptian fruit bats, which don’t, along with cells from people.
The researchers found that for all three species, red blood cells became less flexible and stickier as temperatures dropped from 37°C to 23°C. But when they cooled the cells even further to 10°C, the bat cells continued this metamorphosis, whereas the human cells did not.
Indeed, the bat cells — even those of non-hibernating bats, which probably maintained the evolutionary capacity — continued to become thick, stiff and functional even at very low temperatures. This might be slowing down the cells as they pass through the tiny vessels in the muscles and lungs, making them highly efficient at exchanging gases, like oxygen, throughout the body.
“It is like how when you take your time at the supermarket instead of being rushed, you can really fill up your basket,” says Kerth. Exactly how this structural change happens is still unclear, but the team guesses that the mechanical properties of the bat red blood cell membranes (细胞膜) play a key role.
The findings suggest that drugs could one day include human red blood cell membranes to imitate the way bat membranes react to the cold, says Kerth. In the more distant future, hibernation could also allow for efficient long distance space travel, requiring minimal food and other resources while preserving mental health during the journey. “There are benefits of putting humans at low temperature during space flight,” says Kerth.

Nevertheless, it is becoming apparent that positivity has its limits. In 2021, a meta-analysis with more than 217,000 participants investigated the link between optimism, pessimism and mortality. It found that an optimistic outlook was indeed associated with the lower risk of death, however, both unrealistic optimism and pessimism were linked to a higher risk of death. 39
How can we escape toxic positivity Susan Davis from Harvard Medical School emphasizes the importance of allowing ourselves to sit with uncomfortable emotions. 40 The key to managing emotions does not lie in judging oneself for feeling negative emotions, but simply experiencing them, knowing that they will pass.
