At Christmas last year, Cathy Wood’s family home in Manchester was disturbingly quiet. Her daughters, 19 and 21, were revising for exams. She says she and her husband “hardly saw anything interesting in the festival…I was a bit fed up.” Bored and frustrated, she bought a 45kg bunch ( 一捆) of secondhand clothes, without knowing what she was going to do with it.
Wood, a former teacher of English, has always loved clothes. At university, Wood hung out with the fashion students and sewed ( 缝纫) her own new romantic outfits. Wood, now 62, enjoyed shopping for vintage (老款) clothing and had even discussed getting a shop with a friend, but the rents put them off. A week or so after the bunch arrived, she booked a stall (货摊) at West Didsbury Makers Market.
Standing at her first market stall was a wholly new experience though. “It was very different from teaching. In market, you need the right amount of contact with people.” Wood sold four pieces at her first market, which paid for the stall and left a small surplus (盈余). Now, she sometimes returns home with 30 empty coat hangers. But it was the contact with customers and fellow traders that she found most rewarding. “It’s a lovely atmosphere. You chat and get to know each other. I really enjoyed it.” she says.
Sometimes, in quiet moments on the stall, she takes out her mending and thinks of her mother and grandmother. “My grandmother taught art and crafts, and both she and my mother spent a lot of time with the sewing machine, teaching me to sew,” “What these clothes do is to transport me back to different times when things were easier for me. They give me a pleasurable feeling. Nostalgia (怀旧) can be a good thing in that way.”
After she stopped teaching, she “started to feel like a non-person”, she says. The market stall “has given me status in my own mind to be part of the community, contributing something, to be somebody people talk to, somebody people smile at.”
24.Why did Wood sell secondhand clothes
A.To keep her friend company. B. To kill her boring retirement life.
C. To pick up her sewing skills. D. To pay her daughter’s schooling fees.
25.What does Wood find most rewarding in her business
A.The profits earned from the business.
B. The surroundings of the market stall.
C. The competition with different traders.
D. The communication with other people.
26.What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.The good old days. B. Art and crafts.
C. Customers and fellow traders. D. Her grandmother and mother.
27.What does Wood say concerning her secondhand clothes business
A.It has made her community richer.
B. It has made her a worthy person.
C. It has improved her marketing skills.
D. It has helped her to be a funny person.

Three young American men were on a crowded train when they came across a dangerous robber. Ignoring their personal safety, they rushed the robber and controlled him. Only some people seem capable
of this sudden form of heroism (英雄主义). Why some men rise to the occasion — and others don’t — has been a bit difficult to explain. Psychologists have explored this question through biological and personality psychology.
Of course, heroism and courage can appear in many forms, and men and women risk their reputation ( 名声), health, and social recognition to do what they think is right. When it comes to physically risky bravery, people assume that men will take the lead. There are sound biological reasons for this fixed image. One of the most common fears in men is that they will be viewed as a coward (懦夫), and a man who fails to display physical courage will suffer damage to his reputation in a way that a woman will not. Throughout history, gaining a higher position among peers (同龄人) has been the ticket that needs to get punched for a man to attract future wife and father children.
People tend to have an idea of what heroes are like. When rating (打分) the personalities of movie heroes, participants expected them to be more hard-working, open to experience, approachable, and emotionally stable than the average person. But some studies suggest that people who show heroic behavior usually have the personalities of madmen: risk-taking, coolness under stress, and an eagerness to take over in social situations.
The study of the relationship between personality and heroism is at an early stage. Psychologists are still at a loss to predict in advance who will heroically step up when needed. Often, the hero is an otherwise ordinary person who finds himself on an extraordinary occasion. Meanwhile, some individuals trained to behave heroically might hesitate in a dangerous situation. Various factors like identities, occasions and specific training will influence the final heroism. Hopefully, the right mix of occasion and personalities enable courage to carry the day.
32.How is the topic introduced in the first paragraph
A.By presenting an idea. B. By giving an example.
C. By making a comparison. D. By drawing a conclusion.
33.What do the underlined words “get punched” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Be bought. B. Be returned. C. Be abandoned. D. Be gained.
34.Why is it difficult to predict who will act heroically in a crisis
A.Heroes are born, not made.
B.Heroic acts only appear in a specific crisis.
C.Individual personality is not a dependable sign of heroism.
D.Heroism is a phenomenon influenced by numerous factors.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.How Are Heroes Trained B. Why Are Heroes Important
C. Who Are the True Heroes D. What Makes a Person Heroic

China has set new rules limiting the amount of time children can play online games. The rules limit children to just three hours of online game playing a week. That is one hour between 8 pm.and 9 pm.on Friday,Saturday and Sunday most weeks.

第一节
Dear Jim,
How is everything going I’m writing to invite you to the annual Campus Culture Festival to be held next Friday.
This year the festival will provide various activities ranging from singing, painting to paper cutting and kite flying, which will be quite fascinating. As a lover of traditional culture, I’d like to choose kite flying because not only can we appreciate pictures, poems and proverbs about kites, we can also have the chance to learn how to make kites from folk artists. Besides, an exciting competition for kite flying will be held. I’m sure we’ll develop our awareness of traditional culture and practical ability during this activity.
If you are interested in it, please let me know. I hope that I will meet you at the Campus Culture Festival and have a good time together.
Looking forward to your earliest reply.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
读后续写:
I was beside myself with extreme anxieties, assuming the worst had happened.Suddenly, the phone rang.I rushed to the phone and picked the receiver up.From the other end of the phone came my father's voice. He said breathlessly,"Son,I am so sorry about the football game, but.there was a terrible accident..on the freeway..on my home, and I stopped to help the injured and ended up going to the hospital.I left my phone in the car,soI couldn't call you until now."
The heavy stone in my heart finally fell to the ground.I was so relieved to hear from my father.Having learnt that he was safe,I burst into tears. It was at that moment that I had a full understanding of the importance of a
curfew.Since then,I have been insisting on checking in!For me,it's not only about knowing that someone I love is safe.It is also one more proof ofmy father's loving me as much as he does.
