Pet therapy, a kind of animal-assisted emotional support to those with various mental health issues, dates as far back as the 1600s. It particularly benefits children by providing company, support, and non-judgmental companionship. The animals used in pet therapy vary, with dogs and cats being the most common. Today, the services offered by pet therapy organizations are diverse.
Therapeutic Paws of Canada (TPOC), a non-profit organization has been offering pet therapy for over 20 years, having gathered over 600 volunteers and their pets.
The programs offered by TPOC require pets to have an additional certification besides the basic one for working with adults and seniors. TPOC’s Vice Chair, Michele Peddle, explains that the evaluation the animals require in order to work with children is a completely different test. The cats and dogs have to be “bomb-proof”. As Peddle puts it, “The ones that can handle alarms going off, people running around, just any crazy situation: They are bomb-proof animals.”
Peddle recalls a case where his dog, Jasmine, worked closely with a boy with severe disabilities. Peddle would bring Jasmine to this boy’s school on a regular basis. In addition to the joy he experienced when seeing Jasmine, the dog's presence encouraged the boy’s classmates to interact with and spend more time with him. Jasmine ended up being a lifelong source of comfort and social interaction. The boy is now a young adult and the partnership he had with Jasmine never disappeared.
Peddle insists therapy animals naturally support kids, sensing their needs. She said, "You can’t train it into them. They either get it or they don’t.”

The world uses 3 million tonnes of pesticides annually, but much of it is unnecessary. The extra chemicals run off onto land and enter watercourses, harming the environment and health.
Now new AI-based spraying methods are being commercialized, promising to reduce pesticide use by up to 90%. The agricultural industry has made progress in reducing overspray, but precision spraying with AI is the future.
A team from AgZen, set up by Kripa Varanasi and Vishnu Jayaprakash in 2020 to commercialize a new type of spray nozzle (喷嘴) , came up with a monitoring system called RealCoverage, which has now been launched as a product in its own right.
Capable of being fitted to existing sprayers, RealCoverage consists of two camera-based sensors on each spray arm, one placed slightly ahead and the other just behind.
The AI model take account of various external factors, such as weather conditions, to compute how effective the spray will be. The results are shown in real-time on a display in the driver’s cab, giving a simple percentage of spray success. In addition, it can suggest how things might be improved, so the driver can adjust the nozzles, raise or lower the boom or drive a bit faster or slower to achieve better coverage.
All this provides a huge increase in the depth of knowledge available to farmers, essentially allowing them to measure spray results in terms of milliliters per leaf, instead of liters per hectare. The firm says trials on farms in America and Europe allowed farmers to save 30-50% of their chemical costs.
For farmers willing to try these new technologies, the possibility of reducing waste is very attractive.
What can be learned from the first two paragraphs
A. Pesticides are necessary for farming.
B. The farming industry fully uses AI.
C. AI spraying methods are widely used.
D. Excess pesticides threaten the environment.
29. How does RealCoverage support farmers to achieve better spray coverage
A. By reducing pesticide use. B. By providing real-time feedback.
C. By predicting weather conditions. D. By adjusting the nozzles automatically.
30. What is the author's attitude toward AI spraying technology
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Neutral. D. Skeptical.
31. What is the best title of the passage
A. AI Spraying: Precision Meets Sustainability B. Smart Sensors: Future of Agriculture
C. Traditional Farming VS Modern Technology D. Global Challenges in Pesticide Management
D
After an unusual abundance of orange poppies (罂粟花) appeared on the slopes of Walker Canyon, in the Temescal Mountains south-east of Los Angeles, social-media influencers streamed to the scene to take pictures of themselves among the blossoms, prompting their followers to do the same. The “superbloom” of flowers produced a superbloom of people, stamping on the poppies, causing squeeze-out phenomenon and posing a public safety risk.
For Nicholas Carr, a critic of technology, this scene represents today’s media-filled world. Like poppies, social platforms are attractive but harmful.
In his book Superbloom, Carr examines the unintended impacts of communications technologies. He argues that unchecked self-expression on social media can produce feelings of envy and loneliness, and even contribute to depression.
While many blame profit-driven tech firms and call for stricter regulation, Carr takes a different track. He believes that the issues with social media arise from the interplay between the fundamental features of digital networks and human nature.
Carr provides many examples of how digital media can intensify deep-seated tendencies in human nature. For instance, a 1976 study showed that living close to others often led to more conflicts than friendships. On social media, everyone is a neighbour, and digital media highlight certain aspects of human nature while reducing others. Therefore, breaking up big tech firms is unlikely to change social media’s workings, as other companies would simply replace them. Instead, Carr suggests that users need to change themselves by living a more material and less virtual existence.
However, despite his detailed analysis, Carr’s solutions appear vague. Critics suggest he avoids repeating ideas from others, reflecting a deeper issue: the negative impacts of social media have been extensively discussed, and criticizing these platforms is now commonplace. The debate has moved on to topics like AI and tech bosses’ ties to politicians. Ultimately, Carr may have simply followed the crowd instead of offering truly original insights.
What does the “superbloom” of orange poppies symbolize in the passage
A. The beauty of nature. B. The importance of public safety.
C. The popularity of social media. D. The negative impacts of social media.
33. Why does Carr mention the 1976 study in his book Superbloom
A. To show social media can increase conflicts.
B. To argue breaking up tech firms won’t help.
C. To explain how digital media highlight human nature.
D. To prove living close to others causes more conflicts.
34. What does Carr advise to do regarding the issues with social media
A. Limit users’ digital use. B. Make stricter regulations of tech firms.
C. Post more positive contents online. D. Be aware of social media’s darkside.
35. Where is the article probably taken from
A. A travel guide. B. A social media blog.
C. A book review. D. A technology magazine.

How to Create a Durable Memory
Life is full of disconnected events, and memory allows us to connect those events and construct our stories. 36 The following principles will help you keep your memory sharp at any age.
Pay attention
37 We remember what we pay attention to. We tend to pay attention to what we find interesting, meaningful, new, surprising, and emotional. Nothing focuses the mind like surprise. For example, although one may thoroughly enjoy a particular conversation, the same conversation a second time around would be dull.
Take advantage of chunking
Any group of elements that can be associated with each other can become a chunk. We remember the whole by remembering the parts. For example, a phone number sequence of 7-5-4-1-4-2-5 would be chunked into 754-1425. 38
39
The more study sessions are spaced apart, the more effort is required for remembering, and that leads to better long-term memory. For example, an hour of study tonight, an hour on the weekend, and another session a week from now. Ideally, schedule with sleep in between sessions. Adequate sleep could be the most important part of the memory process.
Attach Emotional Significance.
The experience of emotion enhances our memories. Emotionally charged events (successes, humiliation, failures) are remembered better than those of neutral events. 40 Day after day, our memories shift from the specifics to the general meaning of the event. As the saying goes, “Time heals all wounds.”
A. Ensure enough sleep.
B. Space out your Learning.
C. Focus helps create a memory.
D. But how do we form new memories
E. It helps retain and recall information.
F. It is suggested to attach your attention to details.
G. However, memories become less vivid over time.

A Miracle Survival
Michel, a lover of snowboarding, typically went to the Mount Baker Ski Area more than 30 times a year, and made it a point to be there whenever snowstorms dumped fresh powder.
On March 3 three years ago, Michel and his friend Zuber, both with the required avalanche gear(雪崩防护装备), including a two-way radio and a shovel, went on their second run of the morning around the area nicknamed Powder Mountain. As usual, they were attracted to the fresh powder outside the routes maintained by the ski patrol(巡逻队), which were marked by ropes and signs to warn that they had left the safe zone. Speeding down under the ropes, they experienced great powder and enjoyed the thrill of navigating through the trees, which was exactly they chased.
Rushing down the hill, they were aware of tree wells around, which are formed when low-lying branches hindered snow accumulation around trees, resulting in deep packed snow that could bury a person. But they got used to these hidden dangers, for digging themselves out of a tree well was not so difficult, just as Michel said, “We’ve been there. I’ve had to dig out a couple times. You reach down through the snow, find the board, loosen it from your feet and pull yourself out of the hole.”
Ridiculously, snowboarding is usually safe, but can quickly turn dangerous. On that morning run, when moving through the trees, Michel ran into trouble. The front of his board hit a small branch hidden under a massive layer of new snow. Up-ended, Michel fell backward into a tree well. Then he was trapped upside-down in deep snow, in total darkness. Obviously, he could not dig himself out this time.
Remembering his avalanche-survival training, Michel knew he had to make an air pocket around his mouth. Carefully, he struggled to push snow away from his mouth, and then used his jacket to protect the air pocket, which could help him last a little longer. .

Dear Jack,
I’m happy to tell you that I went on an unforgettable study tour recently. Here I’d like to share my amazing experience with you.
Last Friday, our school organized a study tour themed “Embrace Nature” to the local nature reserve, where we hiked along the trails, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the stunning scenery. I explored varieties of local plants, among which I was impressed with the pitcher plant most for its strange appearance.
This study tour was truly rewarding. It not only allowed me to get close to nature but also broaden my horizons about the nature. I’m already looking forward to the next one.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文
Para 1
Then, the two-way radio on Michel’s shoulder crackled with message from Zuber. “Michel! Where are you ” Michel knew it’s difficult for Zuber to help him because of the risky situation so he only replied he was trapped but let him be. However, Zuber would not give up his friend. Informing Michel on the radio, “Wait and I’ll dig you out.”, Zuber hunted around and caught a glimpse of red color in his side vision, which was exactly Michel’s upside-down snowboard. With excitement, Zuber loosened his snowboard, anxiously but determinedly, with his shovel as a stick, stepping through the thick snow towards his friend’s site.
Para 2
Zuber reached the well and used his shovel to dig downward violently. Soon the dug-out snow made a big snowman beside him. Then, suddenly, Michel sensed the darkness began to lighten. His jacket moved away from his face. It was Zuber who pushed the snow away from his mouth. Fresh air hit Michel’s face, and he sucked as much of it into his starving lungs as he could. The moment Zuber pulled Michel free and helped him stand up, they hugged tightly. “You give me a second life.” Michel mumbled.
