My husband, Bill, and I drove slowly down a road that Sunday afternoon ten years ago. With no destination in mind, we were exploring the countryside around our recently rented apartment in Allen, Texas. Neither of us had ever been in this neck of the woods. A 13th-century Italian mathematician called Leonardo of Pisa penned one of the world’s most famous sequences of numbers, the Fibonacci sequence. It is a series where each number is the sum of the two numbers before it: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc. When you divide any number above five by the number before it, the result approaches about 1.618, known as the “golden ratio (黄金比例)”.
Leonardo, also called Fibonacci, included the sequence in the book Liber Abaci, intended for tradesmen to track their finances. In this, he uses an unrealistic example of rabbits reproducing to explain the sequence, where one rabbit pair produces a single young each month that mates with another rabbit to produce a single rabbit the following month. Each month, the number of rabbits increases by the same number in the Fibonacci sequence. Leonardo is often credited with discovering the sequence. However, it has been used in the Hindu-Arabic numeral system since at least 200 BCE.
The “golden” quality of the ratio seemingly shows up everywhere, which early scholars saw as the presence of universal order. For example, it has been seen in the spirals (螺旋) of some seashells, or seeds on sunflower heads. Fibonacci numbers determine even proportions (比例) in the human body. Artists have used the famous ratio to produce appealing works of art, such as the Mona Lisa. The golden ratio makes many appearances throughout the songs of some of the great musicians. Mozart used the golden ratio while composing. Lady Gaga’s hit song Perfect Illusion, has a dramatic key change at the 111th second of the 179-second song, nearly the golden ratio.
While humans love to see patterns, some people in the scientific community suggest there are many examples of nature not following the rule. However, the Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio highlight the interconnectedness of math, science, and creativity. They remind us that patterns — whether in sunflower seeds, or musical rhythms — invite us to uncover the hidden rules shaping our world.

In many cultures, saying someone else’s given name is disrespectful, especially if they have higher status than you. Even your parents might never call your name. It’s not that they don’t remember what their friends and relatives are called. Rather, saying names makes them feel anxious, uneasy, or simply awkward.
In 2023, a group of psychologists called this phenomenon “Alexinomia”, and those who feel it most severely might avoid addressing anyone by their name in any case. “Aexinomia” is strongest around those they are closest to, so some people can’t bring themselves to say the name of their wife or best friend.
Steven Clayman, a sociology professor , explained in one of his books, “People with Alexinomia are likely to have this intuition (直觉) that to use a name is to take a stand and to do something they don’t intend to do.” Actually, Alexinomia is a mostly harmless quirk (怪癖) of the human experience. However, if we always avoid saying the names of those closest to us, it can distort (扭曲) how they feel about us.
Names are always optional in a conversation because they aren’t grammatically necessary. However, if you can call others’ names at a right moment, their social function will shine through obviously. For example, American salespeople are trained to say customers’ names over and over again, which is also a common tactic for building a close relationship in business, during telemarketing calls and on first dates.
As Dale Carnegie wrote, “a person’s name is the sweetest and most important sound in any language to that person.” Learning to overcome the discomfort and say their names can remind your loved ones that you care, even though the process of change is challenging.

My husband, Bill, and I drove slowly down a road that Sunday afternoon ten years ago. With no

A 13th-century Italian mathematician called Leonardo of Pisa penned one of the world’s most
famous sequences of numbers, the Fibonacci sequence. It is a series where each number is the sum of
the two numbers before it: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc. When you divide any number above five by
the number before it, the result approaches about 1.618, known as the “golden ratio (黄金比例)”.
Leonardo, also called Fibonacci, included the sequence in the book Liber Abaci, intended for
tradesmen to track their finances. In this, he uses an unrealistic example of rabbits reproducing to
explain the sequence, where one rabbit pair produces a single young each month that mates with another
rabbit to produce a single rabbit the following month. Each month, the number of rabbits increases by
the same number in the Fibonacci sequence. Leonardo is often credited with discovering the sequence.
However, it has been used in the Hindu-Arabic numeral system since at least 200 BCE.
The “golden” quality of the ratio seemingly shows up everywhere, which early scholars saw as the
presence of universal order. For example, it has been seen in the spirals (螺旋 ) of some seashells, or
seeds on sunflower heads. Fibonacci numbers determine even proportions (比例) in the human body.
Artists have used the famous ratio to produce appealing works of art, such as the Mona Lisa. The golden
ratio makes many appearances throughout the songs of some of the great musicians. Mozart used the

M: What is life like in Italy Well, life in Italy feels so much slower than that in the US. People are still very productive and they’re very passionate and they go to work, but there’s just this sense of how important it is to enjoy your time with family and with friends. Upon returning home, what they want to do is surf the Internet or watch TV as a means of relaxation. And in Italy it feels like the way people recharge and the way that they relax is being in the company of their friends or their family. So everyone will meet up for a drink when finishing work. And it’s not to drink a lot. It’s really just to have a glass of wine, eat some delicious food, and just sit and talk, but about nothing really. Just enjoy the time and eventually people decide to go home, but it’ll be hours later even though they’re exhausted from work. And they go to work the next day and are productive. I really enjoy that the most.
