Active Learning
Most people assume that the human brain is set on “automatic” —that means it learns all by itself. But this isn’t always true.
1. assume v. 认定,假设
2. set on 设置,处于...状态
3. by oneself 依靠自己,独自地
4. actively take part in 积极参与
5. reflect on 仔细思考
6. what we have learnt 宾从
We need to train ourselves to be better learners—to actively take part in the learning process and to reflect on what we have learnt.
These kinds of learning behaviours are called “active learning”. I suggest doing five things to take an active role in your learning.
2. suggest that sb. (should) do
1. suggest doing sth. 建议做某事
4. take an active role in 积极参与
= actively take part in
★建议:suggest, propose, advise

Get to the truth
1) Find the truth at the heart of each idea.
2) Try to find out the source of an idea, no matter how crazy it seems.
1) Do not accept everything you learn.
2) Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based on truth.
You will increase your chance of learning something.

Focus on the message
objective
1) Separate the message from the messenger.
2) Do not judge people based on first impressions or personal feelings.
1) Many people miss out on learning if they let their personal feelings get in the way.
2) Judging people by first impressions prevents you from learning from them.
Learning opportunities are everywhere, which can help active learners learn all the time.
Task 3: Read the fifth suggestion and fill in the form.
Reading
There are many things we can do to become better learners. We all have two voices. Our inner voice tells us personal opinions and our outer voice deals with others’ opinions and things we have heard. If we listen to our inner voice too much, it can 1 block us from learning. If your inner voice is difficult to control, you can 2 disagree with it. One of the best ways to promote active learning is to ask questions. This helps you 3 gain more knowledge about a topic. 4 In a word, we should never stop being curious. Active learners also 5 try to question the world around them and understand the truth 6 deep within every idea. Finally, as active learners, we should never form opinions about people 7 on the basis of first impressions.
