Text 10
Many rules govern drivers on American streets and highways. The most common ones are the speed limits. The speed limit regulates how fast a car must go. On streets in the city, the speed limit is usually 30 or 35 miles an hour. On highways between cities, the speed limit is usually 65 miles per hour. When people drive faster than the speed limit, a policeman can stop them. The policeman gives them a paper which people call traffic tickets. Traffic tickets tell the drivers how much money they must pay. When drivers receive too many tickets, they probably cannot drive for a while. The rush hour is when people are going to work or going home from work. At rush hour there are many cars on the streets and traffic moves very slowly. Nearly all American cities have rush hours. Drivers do not get tickets very often for speeding in the rush hours because they cannot drive fast.

A篇
而 “Road construction(道路建设)” 未在其中。故选B。
文中提到 “Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome”,说明10岁及以上的志愿者都欢迎,并非至少15岁,A选项错误。 根据“Long pants and closed - toe shoes are required” 说明志愿者被要求穿长裤和闭趾鞋,C选项正确。
根据原文 “Groups of five or more require special arrangements and must be confirmed in advance. Please review the List of Available Projects and fill out the Group Project Request Form.”,即五人及以上的小组需要提前进行特殊安排并确认,要查看可用项目列表并填写团体项目申请表。
根据第一段 “The two boys were Bethany’s former students who had lost their parents. They did not want to enter a foster care center. They turned to Bethany -- their first grade teacher for help. Though she and her daughter lived in a small house, Bethany took the boys in.”
由第二段 “She did, however, mention that with three children to transport, the car was too small and slow. It even burned engine oil. Bethany needed something new. However, she couldn’t buy one with three children to raise.”
结合第二段 “As a good friend, I listened to her concerns... An idea hit me when I watched a TV show.” 以及第三段 “He explained he had received a letter, knowing her need for a new car.”
根据第一段 “The world’s birds, regarded as indicators for the condition of the planet, are disappearing in large numbers as the impact of humanity on the Earth grows” 以及第二段 “There are about 11,000 species of bird flying on this planet, but the populations of half of them are falling while just 6% increasing” 可知,世界上的鸟类正在大量消失,很多鸟类的数量在下降。 故选A。
根据第三段 “Currently, we’re speeding up the rescue of the species at risk, but we’re not stopping the flow of species towards extinction. There’s only so much we do with site - based conservation” 可知,亚历山大·李斯认为目前虽然在加快拯救濒危物种,但无法阻止物种走向灭绝的趋势,且基于地点的保护措施作用有限。
D选项 “The decline and conservation of birds” 全面概括了文章关于鸟类数量下降和保护的内容。
根据第一段“Climate change is speeding up the frequency and seriousness of extreme weather events... Besides, traditional weather forecast models in sub-Saharan Africa often aren’t reliable enough... Therefore, accurate and timely forecasts are important to safeguard lives and livelihoods.”
从第二段“Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in East Africa to improve the accuracy of extreme weather forecasts.”以及“We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can be more accurate”可以看出,新的天气预报模型是把传统天气预报和人工智能结合起来,以此提高预报准确性。故选A。
根据Shruti Nath所说的“This model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations an affordable way of making more accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data”,可知这个新模型成本低,当地气象组织能够负担得起。故选C。

F选项“It might mean more responsibility than you really want.”(它可能意味着你需要承担的责任比你真正想要承担的更多。)
A选项“Enjoy the Process.”(享受过程。) 故选A。

Dear Mr. Johnson,
I’m extremely sorry for completely depending on AI to write the English composition. I deeply regret my dishonest behavior.
I used AI because I was under great pressure with multiple assignments due at the same time. Afraid of missing the deadline, I turned to AI for help. But this is no excuse for my actions. AI is a powerful tool, which, however, should not replace my own intellectual efforts. Therefore, I will learn to use AI properly and set up a reasonable study schedule to manage my time better. I’ll also read more and practice writing regularly to improve my writing ability.
Once again, I’m sorry for my mistake and I promise to be honest in my study from now on.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

After breakfast, Rosa headed to the beach. The sand was soft under her feet, and the waves crashed gently against the shore. She walked along the water’s edge, collecting seashells and feeling the warm sun on her back. A group of children were building sandcastles nearby, their laughter filling the air. Rosa joined them and helped build a magnificent sandcastle. Time flew by as she engaged in this simple yet enjoyable activity. When it was time for lunch, she realized she hadn’t once thought about her phone. She went back to their small cabin and enjoyed a joyful lunch with her parents. After lunch, Rosa continued to work on the unfinished puzzle.
Without thinking of her phone, Rosa was absorbed in the puzzle. As she carefully fit each piece into place, she felt a sense of accomplishment. Soon, her parents joined her, and they worked on the puzzle together. They chatted and laughed, sharing stories and jokes. By the end of the day, the puzzle was finally completed. Looking at the beautiful picture formed by the puzzle pieces, Rosa understood that there were so many wonderful things in life that didn’t involve a phone. This beach vacation without a phone turned out to be the most memorable one she had ever had.

Bethany was a single mother with a daughter aged 6. She worked very hard. She drove a small old car. One September, the teachers returned from a summer break to see Bethany drive up to school with three children. The two boys were Bethany’s former students who had lost their parents. They did not want to enter a foster care center. They turned to Bethany — their first grade teacher for help. Though she and her daughter lived in a small house, Bethany took the boys in.
During lunch, while other teachers shared life stories, Bethany never complained about her new burdens. She did, however, mention that with three children to transport, the car was too small and slow. It even burned engine oil. Bethany needed something new. However, she couldn’t buy one with three children to raise. As a good friend, I listened to her concerns. At that time, I did not have much money. But I wanted to help Bethany buy a car. An idea hit me when I watched a TV show.
One day, Bethany received an invitation to a TV show. She was surprised but decided to attend it. Midway through the show the host called Bethany to the stage. He explained he had received a letter, knowing her need for a new car. The audience listened attentively to Bethany’s story and were deeply moved. Then the host announced that Bethany would receive a new car for her family. Cheers filled the studio and Bethany shook in disbelief.
Six hundred miles away, I watched the joy of it all from the television in my living room. Bethany’s big heart taught me many lessons that year. I did nothing but share a story.

The world’s birds, regarded as indicators for the condition of the planet, are disappearing in large numbers as the impact of humanity on the Earth grows, a global review has found.
There are about 11,000 species of bird flying on this planet, but the populations of half of them are falling while just 6% increasing. Bird populations are affected by all the damage caused by human activity, from the destruction of wild habitat, the climate crisis, and pesticides and other pollution, to over-hunting. Billions of birds have been lost in recent decades in North America and Europe alone while there are more species in the tropics (热带).
Conservation efforts have been successful in rescuing individual species in specific locations, but political will and funding are needed to reverse the global decline. While conservation work has improved populations of 70 species, enough to lower their risk of extinction since 1988, 391 species have disappeared. “Currently, we’re speeding up the rescue of the species at risk, but we’re not stopping the flow of species towards extinction. There’s still so much we can do with site-based conservation,” said Alexander Lees at Manchester Metropolitan University, who led the review.
Global data collated (校对) by Bird-Life International underpinned the review. The conservation group’s chief executive, Patricia Zurita said, “Birds truly are good indicators for the health of our planet because of their sensitivity to ecosystem changes, their common existence around the planet, and how well-studied they are. We need to listen and act upon what birds are telling us, as they disappear ever faster.”
28. What can we know about the populations of birds
A. They are falling in large numbers.
B. They are influenced by human activities only.
C. Half of them are increasing rather than decreasing.
D. They are falling faster in North America and Europe.
29. What can we infer according to Alexander Lees
A. Many species of birds have been rescued.
B. We won’t be able to stop birds from dying out.
C. We should do more than site-based conservation.
D. The flow of species towards extinction is slowing down.
30. What do the underlined word “underpinned” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Corrected. B. Supported. C. Criticize. D. Evaluated.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The importance of birds. B. Humans’ damage to birds.
C. The living conditions for birds. D. The decline and conservation of birds.
D
Climate change is speeding up the frequency and seriousness of extreme weather events such as deadly floods and severe droughts in places like the Horn of Africa. Besides, traditional weather forecast models in sub-Saharan Africa often aren’t reliable enough to forecast extreme weather events accurately ahead of time, leaving the areas at risk. Therefore, accurate and timely forecasts are important to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in East Africa to improve the accuracy of extreme weather forecasts. Researchers developed a first-of-its-kind new modeling approach to give more accurate rainfall forecasts. “We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can be more accurate,” explains Shruti Nath, a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Oxford Department of Physics.
“This model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations an affordable way of making more accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data”, Shruti Nath added. The researchers say the project could change early warning systems in East Africa, making the area get better prepared for extreme weathers caused by climate change.
Traditionally, many forecasting organizations in Africa didn’t have good computational (计算) resources. The project is supported by an IT company, which provides funding and computational resources. This approach gives them the ability to use AI to make forecasting at the least computational expense.
The model is currently being rolled out in Kenya and Ethiopia. If successful in East Africa, researchers hope to use it in other parts of the world facing similar challenges. More countries are trying to spread the technology as well as build local ownership and trust.
32. What does the author want to stress in paragraph 1
A. The seriousness of the flood and drought in Africa.
B. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
C. The unreliability of traditional weather forecast models.
D. The importance of accurate and timely weather forecasts.
33. How does the new weather forecast model work
A. It combines the traditional weather forecasting with AI.
B. It uses AI to correct all the errors in traditional forecasts.
C. It replaces the traditional forecasting method completely.
D. It uses a supercomputer to improve the traditional forecasts.
34. What can we learn from Shruti Nath’s words
A. The new model is costly.
B. The new mode doesn’t need data.
C. The new model is affordable for local organizations.
D. The new mode works efficiently only in data-rich areas.
35. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI.
B. Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa.
C. Challenges for traditional weather forecasting.
D. AI’s help in improving weather forecast accuracy.

Rosa’s family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
Rosa complained, “But my friends will be expecting my updates about the trip.” Her mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Rosa handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
It took almost one day for them to drive to the beach house. As they turned off the highway onto countryside roads, the clouds darkened. It started to rain cats and dogs. “Even more beautiful in the rain,” her mother said. “What do you think, Rosa ” She became impatient. “Beautiful,” she murmured.
That night after dinner, Rosa walked into the kitchen. Her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, “Could I have my phone back Just for one second please ”
“No,” he replied. “It’s locked at home.” Rosa was very upset. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookshelf in the living room. The books looked as boring as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle (拼图). She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was already eleven o’clock. She had been there working on the puzzle for almost three hours! The puzzle was only half done, but she was really tired. So, she went to bed.
When Rosa awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and opened the curtains. The sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Rosa of a photo that her friend Beth had recently sent her.
This view was even more beautiful. It would leave everyone speechless. Rosa dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she stood in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.
