Total Solar Eclipse 2025 Australia
One of nature’s most remarkable events-a total solar eclipse(日蚀)-will take place on the western edge of Australia on April 20th, 2025 and we have chosen the perfect way for you to enjoy this event: on a cruise(航游) at sea.
There have been only five total solar eclipses in Australia over the past century and this is the first hybrid eclipse in more than 1000 years. Unlike other cruises for this event, ours has the well-known astronomer Abigail Beall to accompany you. You will have the best possible view of the event as well as enjoying lectures and stargazing on land and at sea. Abigail will be on hand throughout, giving lectures on the history and science of eclipses, the black hole at the centre of the galaxy-along with providing many opportunities for guided stargazing. Plus, there will be additional talks from the Astronomical Society of Australia. Click here for detailed arrangements of the tour.

My earliest memories are of having two very old parents. My mother was 42 when I was born, which back then was seriously old to have a baby, and a little risky too. My oldest brother was 14 years older than me and the middle brother ten years older. When I was quite small they had both left home. I grew up almost like an only child. I tended to amuse myself and play in the garden and draw and paint and shoot. I suppose you do learn as an only child that you're going to have to get on with life by yourself. You're going to have to find things that excite and move you.
I was shipped off to Sunday school in Edinburgh when I was seven years old. I felt a proper Charlie, because I was the only little boy among the Sunday school children who was wearing a kilt (苏格兰短裙). I also felt rather threatened by the stories we were taught. Old-school Christianity was filled with punishment and anger that I didn't really enjoy. For the rest of my attendance at Sunday school, I didn't get closer than climbing a tree outside the church and hiding in the branches, waiting until the children came out, then dropping down to join the school team and walking out of the church to be met by my parents, who were then reassured that I'd been to Sunday school as I was supposed to.
When my parents moved to Blackpool, my aunt, who came to live with us, took me to two or three concerts. I got to see Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and the early Rolling Stones performing at Blackpool's ABC Theatre-which, when I was 12 years old, was an important moment of recognising that that isn't what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, because the music they played was not what I was enjoying. I was drawn to the blues and Black American folk music. It felt very real and human.
24. What do we know about the author's childhood
A. Many things moved him.
B. He had to do many things on his own.
C. He liked playing in the garden.
D. He got on badly with his brothers.
25. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase “a proper Charlie” in paragraph 2
A. A real fool. B. An independent child.
C. A capable student. D. A clever student.
26. What experiences did the author have in his Sunday school
A. He liked wearing a kilt. B. He often studied in the trees.
C. He was threatened by others. D. He was often absent from school.
27. What can we infer from the text
A. His brothers were not important to him.
B. He never walked into the church.
C. His parents took him to some concerts.
D. The blues caught his interest.

Many people consider mosquito bites just part of summer living but these insects can carry diseases. Mosquitoes are actually some of the most dangerous creatures on the planet. According to the World Health Organization, mosquitoes cause over 700,000 deaths every year.
But there is new hope in the battle between man and mosquito. Scientists at Auburn University, in Alabama, may have found the secret to stopping mosquito-borne diseases. “We have created a type of fabric that blocks mosquito bites,” says John Beckmann, who leads the lab at the university,
Beckmann remembered a camping trip from which he returned riddled with kisses from mosquitoes despite wearing a long-sleeved shirt. “People say, ‘wear long sleeves’ a lot,” Beckmann said, “but long sleeves don't block mosquitoes.”
While some companies are making what they state is bite-proof clothing, the clothing includes some harmful chemicals or is made of thick fabrics that are too hot to wear and are easily beaten by mosquitoes. That's because there are holes in the makeup of their fabrics that mosquitoes and other biting insects can get through.
The key is to discover a fabric that can remove these holes and is still cool enough to wear in hot weather. “That is the reason why this project is not as easy as people think,” said Beckmann. “You obviously need your clothes to be breathable. But that usually comes at the cost of letting mosquitoes bite through them. So the basic problem is keeping the holes there while blocking tiny mosquito mouth-parts at the same time.”
The team tried by using a computer numerical control knitting(编织) machine that could be programmed with different designs until they found a bite-proof one. The end result is a product that the researchers compare to popular high-quality athletic wear.
But the researchers are still not satisfied and will be spending the next year perfecting the comfort of the material and finally creating a clothing line. The hope is that finally any type of fabric can be knitted into the lab's design, so that all kinds of clothing companies from baby clothing producers to dress designers could create bite-proof clothing.
28. What happened to Beckmann on a camping trip
A. He was badly bitten by mosquitoes.
B. He discovered a new kind of mosquito.
C. He felt unbearably hot with long-sleeved clothes.

B. Disadvantages of existing bite-proof clothing.
C. Advancements in bite-proof clothing.
D. Comparisons between different types of bite-proof clothing.
30. Which of the following is the goal of the researchers
A. Persuade more researchers to join in.
B. Make the design applicable to different fabrics.
C. Find a fabric suitable for all designs.
D. Get funded by clothing companies.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Mosquitoes: The Silent Killers B. The Battle Against Mosquitoes
C. A Step Towards a Bite-Free Future D. Proven Ways to Prevent Mosquito Bites
D
Ever fought with a problem Picked up a new skill Encountered a difficult concept The language of learning is full of references to parts of the body outside the brain. Perhaps that’s because these phrases suggest something deeper. Researchers are detecting that learning is easier, quicker and more long-lasting if it involves the body.
“In the past, people have argued that as we grow, we become more able to think abstractly (抽象地),” says Andrew Manches, a psychologist at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. Conventional thinking might suggest that teachers should help prevent children from using body gestures to prepare them for the adult world. But in truth, the physical world never really leaves our thinking. For example, when we process verbs such as lick, kick and pick, medical scanners show that the parts of our brain that control the muscles in our face, legs and hands, respectively, light up with activity.
Science is beginning to back up the idea that actions really might speak louder than words in the classroom. Spencer Kelly, a psychologist at Colgate University in New York, has found that people spend three times as much time gesturing when they think the message they get across is remarkably important, suggesting that even if only at the subconscious(潜意识的) level, we appreciate the communicative value of our body language. Kelly has also found evidence that a teacher is more appealing to students when he or she uses arm and hand movements to stress points.
Also, some studies indicate that young children obtain more if their teacher uses gestures when explaining a concept. Meanwhile, Sunsan Wagner Cook, a psychologist at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, has found that children pick up new concepts more effectively, if they are taught to mirror and repeat gestures their teacher uses.
32. How did people in the past understand learning
A. The older a student grows, the less likely he will think abstractly.
B. Teachers are advised to encourage students to use body gestures.
C. The physical world never really leaves our thinking.
D. Body gestures should be removed to promote adult-like thinking.
33. What can we learn from Spencer Kelly’s study
A. Body movements can increase a teacher’s popularity.
B. People use gestures every time they convey the messages.
C. Young students like to mirror their teacher’s gestures.
D. Body language is more powerful than spoken language.
34. How did the author make us believe the truth of the discovery
A. By explaining some rules. B. By presenting different researches.
C. By making some predictions. D. By analyzing the theory.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. The Language of Learning: A Vital Approach
B. Thinking Abstractly: A Symbol of Adult World
C. Body Language: A Universal Language Signal
D. Body Gestures: A Sharp Tool for Fast Learning
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。
Establishing healthy boundaries with yourself will help you stay within your range of control and prioritize what matters most. Here are some tips.
Be honest with yourself
Behind every fancy purchase is a desire for status and recognition. You secretly want to be noticed for wearing a new watch or carrying a designer purse. 36 So before taking action towards any endeavor, such as making an expensive purchase or pursuing a job promotion, ask yourself, “Who am I doing this for ”
37 However, if you are pursuing something with the hopes of attracting attention, then you need to say no to yourself.
Honor your limits
You can't be everything for everyone. Trying to please everyone makes you vulnerable. 38 It is important that you are wise with your resources.
The importance of honoring your limits is highlighted by the Greek mythological story. The story is a reminder that pushing yourself too hard for too long ultimately comes at a cost.
Stop comparing yourself to others
People will engage in behaviors that trigger you. It might be tempting to enter an undeclared competition with the Joneses. This approach does not work because there is always someone out there who has more of what you desire.
Stop comparing yourself to others. 39 Focus on living a meaningful life that is consistent with your values and goals.
Be fair to yourself
You are likely your worst critic. You secretly say things to yourself that you would never have the heart to tell others.
Remember to have realistic expectations of yourself. 40 If the goal is unrealistic, then you have to say no and adjust your expectations.
A. You criticize yourself for shortcomings.
B. The truth is you have limited energy and time.
C. The reality is that you are not being recognized.
D. What someone is doing with their life has nothing to do with you.
E. If a pursuit will truly improve the quality of your life, then go for it.
F. The same can be said about other pursuits such as accumulating wealth and status.
G. When you set goals, consider whether you have set the standard at a reasonable level.

It was a very cold morning as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my mother was feeling a little under the weather, my sister volunteered to drive me to school. I had overslept and as a result, was running a bit late for school. We got into the car hurriedly. The road was already crowded with traffic. It appeared that everyone was late as well.
My sister was a careful driver and despite the fact I was already late, she refused to drive fast on the slippery road. I was lucky she was such a determined and careful person because a few hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed a tragic accident. It all happened very quickly.
A car had made a left turning without signaling and as a result, a school bus crashed into it. A few cars behind the school bus rammed(猛撞) into the bus as they could not brake in time and soon it became a pile-up. The already crowded road became jammed with vehicles that came to a crawl.
I told my sister that I wanted to help the victims and she nodded silently. She parked the car not too far from the accident spot.
The scene that greeted us was something I would never forget. It left an unforgettable impression in my mind to date. The passengers on the school bus were injured. 1 rushed into the bus and saw the driver laid slumped(瘫倒) on the wheel. He had injuries on the head. My sister helped him down from the bus.

I told the injured school children to stay calm. Most of them appeared to suffer from minor cuts and bruises on their arms and bodies. It was really fortunate that nobody was badly hurt. By then a few adults had entered the bus and together we instructed the children to come out of the bus slowly. The children were crying and screaming for their parents and we had to hug them to keep them quiet.(66词)
Minutes later, two ambulances arrived. A traffic police car was there too. Two policemen were taking down statements from eye-witnesses. The injured were whisked away to the hospital. My sister and I later gave an account to the police about what had happened. I was late for school. In fact, many drivers were also late for their work. Text 10(第 18 题为推断题)
Throughout history, many inventions make our life easier and more convenient. For today's lesson, I'll explain a world-changing item. And next week, all of you will have a chance to learn about the invention in the museum.
So, how many of you know Gutenberg’s printing press This invention played a key role in human history not just for authors or news reporters. Can you imagine a time when everything was handwritten All information shared had to be marked down on hundreds of identical copies. That brings us to the Gutenberg Museum in Germany, where this original invention is still stored.(19)
This story begins in the 1400s in Italy, France and Germany. There, church workers often copied religious texts, shared information and made wine. Gutenberg, a German metal worker, combined these tasks using wine-making machine. Instead of using these machines to press grapes, he used them to press ink onto paper pages for creating books.
Literature, news networks and scientific research documents increased suddenly around the world. But the most significant effect of the invention was on education. (20) With more information available, more people learned to read and schooling became more popular. As a teacher, I chose this topic because it is connected with my job today. But you can choose an invention related to your hobbies or family. So, let's gather ideas!
