Lauren and Andrew Gruel, the husband-and-wife owners of a seafood restaurant — Calico Fish House — are used to thinking local. About an hour’s drive south of the Palisades, where the Eaton Fires are burning in Los Angeles, the Gruels have set up their small business to double as a wildfire relief center.
At least 10 people have died in the fires, and authorities say the death toll is likely to rise. Thousands of structures have burned, with countless neighborhood blocks reduced to ash. About180, 000 people have had to evacuate while more than double that number have been under evacuation warnings, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department (CSD).
Since the owners put the word out on social media that they would house donations for people affected by the fires, a seemingly endless stream of volunteers has shown up to the restaurant ready to help. Some come armed with supplies, others are stopping by with their trucks and trailers to transport the aid to LA.
Boxes and boxes of clothing, articles for daily use, cat food, fresh fruit and cases of water — lined the outside of the restaurant on Thursday night, waiting to be hauled away (拖走). Almost as quickly as Calico loads up one truck, the piles of aid are replenished (补充) with more donations from the community.
Most of the help has come from Huntington Beach residents, and Andrew Gruel together with volunteer residents is spending Friday at Calico cooking up beef and eggs to feed first responders and volunteers in Los Angeles. People from all over the country also have chipped in. Many have been using Amazon and Wal-Mart to ship their donated purchases to the restaurant.
Calico is also offering a free meal to people affected by the fires. As of Thursday night, more than 50 groups of people had dropped in to take the owners up on the offer.

On a recent Sunday, a college student Li Mingchun had dinner with two of his friends, and one of them bought him two bottles of milk tea because “nothing is more harmonious with a nice meal than sweet milk tea”.
However, a recent research paper has shown that frequent consumption of the drinks might lead to addiction, which is associated with depression and anxiety. The research was based on a study of 5, 281 college students in Beijing in 2022. The results of the study have crucial implications for policymakers, as milk tea addiction may pose a severe problem among youth, the paper said. It advised policymakers to consider making regulations for the milk tea industry. Measures could include regulating milk tea advertisements, introducing educational programs on the side effects of addiction on mental health, and introducing food hygiene (卫生) standards for the drink’s ingredients.
More consumers are now paying attention to milk tea drinks’ ingredients and whether they are healthy to consume. While there are no national or industry standards put on milk tea drink companies, the trend is for them to provide healthier products to meet consumer demand.
Hu Dianhan, a college student in Changsha, said students tend to avoid research on the negative impacts of milk tea, adding she does not believe such studies stop most students from drinking it. “Just as we know that it’s not healthy to stay up late, eat junk food and sit for too long, we still keep doing it,” she said. “It is a cheap and very accessible pursuit, and it’s not like it’s as dangerous as drinking alcohol or smoking.” Hu drinks milk tea about three to four times a week. She says she uses it to relax after a bad day or as a reward at the end of a good day.

For coffee lovers, the future is shaping up to be bitter and pricey, as climate change roasts the world’s key growing regions. Farmers have to dig deeper to get water.
Tougher growing conditions have led Vietnamese farmers to question the value of coffee as a cash crop, with some pulling out their trees to plant black pepper and other tropic fruits. Reduced supply has already pushed the robusta (罗布斯塔) price in 2024 to the highest level since at least 2008 — and still, rising temperatures mean future production will fall short.
Regions suitable for crop production reduce globally primarily due to increased heat. Hardier varieties are expected to fare better, and for coffee that means strong, earthy robusta. Researchers found that it would be necessary to adapt, including by replacing arabica (阿拉比卡) with hardier robusta. However, robusta is not a silver bullet for climate change. Researchers are still learning robusta’s limits though it’s more tolerant to heat and to some diseases and pests.
Prolonged dry periods in Vietnam and lack of irrigation water in recent years have already severely affected the productivity of robusta coffee farms in the Central Highlands, according to a study published in 2021. In an October report, World Coffee Research (WCR) said the world may face robusta shortages in 2040 of as much as 35 million bags when taking into account rising consumption trends and the impact of climate change on production. The world currently produces close to 80 million bags of robusta a year.
Farmers are seeing the benefit of more sustainable farming practices. Farmers have cut back on chemical fertilisers and provided shade for coffee shrubs (灌木) so they’re less exposed to the burning sun. They have also planted black pepper to diversify. When applying this, they have more income, and they can save a lot of labour.
