From a young age, I have been interested in travelling and exploring the sights I never knew. The endless possibilities of places to visit and explore have attracted me. Growing up I was lucky to travel to the places with my family, which helped open my eyes and shape my personality.
The trip to Thailand still seems like a fantasy. This country is completely different from ours. Upon arrival in Bangkok, I felt everything was strange. The new environment made me want to go back home. However, we drove through the city of Bangkok to reach our final destination. Along the way, I smelled the street food, watched the strangely lined faces of the street sellers and passers-by and listened to the sound made by tuk-tuks. After experiencing the beauty of Bangkok, the strange feeling turned into excitement.
After a few days in Bangkok, we went to Pattaya and I got to know why Thailand is known as the “Land of Smiles”. As I walked through the streets, the friendliness of strangers was everywhere. When I was lost, a girl came up to me and helped me work out where I was going. And while we were being evacuated (疏散) after the tsunami, a man helped me push my luggage to safety at the risk of his own life.
Time and time again, I was surprised by the friendliness that was shown to me in Thailand by people who had no idea who I was. It’s changed me. Now, I try not to judge (评判) anyone I meet. Instead, I think only about ways in which I can help other people and repay the kindness that has been shown towards me.

Lynn Jenner quickly packed up and drove to higher ground as Hurricane Hone approached in 2024. However, he wasn’t relocating his family; he was shifting snails.
Jenner works with some of the rarest endangered species on the planet — Hawaii’s native tree snails. Once abundant like Christmas ornaments on trees, these colorful, jewel-like snails are now mostly extinct with more than half of the 750 species vanishing within the span of a human lifetime. Jenner and his team with Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources face the monumental task of saving what’s left.
To beat extinction, 40 species of snails, each about the size of a dime, are being cared for by humans in an unremarkable trailer near Honolulu. “Most people think of pandas and tigers when they think of endangered species going extinct, but imagine having 40 different species that are all as rare as pandas.” Jenner says.
This winter, one species of snail will reach a significant milestone. It will be released in a special enclosure in the mountains of Oahu, which has been painstakingly prepared to give the snails the best chance of survival in their natural habitat.
However, the outlook for Hawaii’s snails remain uncertain. Around the globe, plants and animals are being brought into enclosure as a last-ditch effort against extinction. But with climate change and the spread of invasive species, many have no clear path back to the wild in the near term. This could mean they will remain under human care. In light of the biodiversity crisis, many wildlife biologists believe there’s no other option. “These are irreplaceable biological treasures,” Jenner says. “It is now or never. What we manage to preserve on Earth will be what the next generation can reintroduce.”
28.What does the text say about Hawaii’s tree snails
A.They live as long as humans. B.375 species have disappeared.
C.Their population has increased. D.They are close to extinction.
29.How does Lynn Jenner help endangered snails
A.By restoring their habitats. B.By studying their behavior.
C.By reducing invasive species. D.By moving and caring for them.
30.What is the purpose of Paragraph 4
A.To compare snails to pandas. B.To explain snails’ survival in nature.
C.To stress a key snail release event. D.To describe why snails are in a trailer.
31.What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A.Popular species should be prioritized. B.Human care is vital for endangered species.
C.Biodiversity conservation faces uncertainty. D.Climate change alone causes snail extinction.
D
As the planet warms up and oceans rise, extreme weather events are becoming the norm. Getting notified in time to prepare for a disastrous hurricane or heat wave could be the disparity between life and death. AI can help. Two studies published in the journal Nature described the benefit of two AI models that could improve weather forecasting.
The first AI-based system is called Pangu-Weather, which was developed by the Huawei Cloud team. It was capable of predicting global weather a week in advance. A majority of countries use numerical (数值)weather prediction models. These models use math formulas to create computer models of the atmosphere and oceans for predicting future weather with data from them. What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather model is deeply trained with the help of 39-year global weather data, preparing it to forecast temperature, pressure, and wind speed. When compared to the numerical weather prediction method, Pangu-Weather was 10,000 times faster and no less accurate. Pangu-Weather also contains a 3D model, unlike past AI forecasting systems, that allows it to record atmospheric states at different pressure levels to further increase its accuracy.
Pangu-Weather can predict weather patterns 5—7 days in advance. However, it can’t forecast precipitation (降水). As precipitation prediction is vital for extreme weather forecasting, a second Nature model, NowcastNet, fills this gap. It can accurately predict rainfall 6 hours ahead, helping meteorologists (气象学家)study weather patterns in real-time more effectively.
NowcastNet focuses on detailed, realistic descriptions of extreme rainfall patterns in local regions. It uses radar observations from the US and China, as well as deep learning methods, to predict precipitation rates over a 1.6-million-square-mile region of the eastern and central US up to 3 hours in advance. 62 meteorologists from China tested NowcastNet and ranked it first, out of four other leading weather forecasting methods, in reliably predicting heavy rain, which it did 71 percent of the time.
While generative AI models have good prospects in weather forecasting, experts point out that replacing existing systems has many challenges. However, in 5 — 10 years, these models may surprise us.
32.What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Difference. B.Decision. C.Settlement. D.Struggle.
33.What is the advantage of Pangu-Weather compared with the numerical weather prediction method
A.It can predict precipitation more accurately. B.It can provide a 3D view of the weather.
C.It is much faster and equally accurate. D.It can record more detailed atmospheric states.
34.What can we learn about NowcastNet from the text
A.It is mainly used to predict global weather patterns.
B.It was developed by 62 meteorologists from China.
C.It uses radar observations and deep learning to predict precipitation in the US.
D.It ranks first among all weather forecasting methods in predicting heavy rain.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.The impacts of climate change on extreme weather events.
B.The challenges in using generative AI in weather forecasting.
C.The explanation of the traditional numerical weather-prediction method.
D.The introduction of two AI-based weather-forecasting models and their features.

Tiffany Massey had just moved to the state of Maine last year and lived alone. She enjoyed the beach near the neighbourhood and jogging (慢跑) around in the evenings. It was during one of those evenings that she noticed Mrs Johnson. She’d never forget their first meeting.
Mrs Johnson had a dog named Max. Max almost attacked her one evening if it hadn’t been for Mrs Johnson. “Stop now, or you won’t get any food tonight!” she yelled at the dog from a distance.
“I’m sorry. Max didn’t mean it. He just doesn’t like strangers! You’d better stay away from him!” Mrs Johnson apologized, walking up to her. “Well...” Before Tiffany could say anything, the elderly woman and the dog walked away.
Days later, she was jogging along the beach again when Max barked (狗叫) at her like their first meeting. Tiffany tried to change her route (路线) to escape him. This happened even every time she went for a jog later, and Tiffany had had enough of him!
With weeks flying, things changed a bit as they met more often. Max no longer barked at Tiffany but followed her instead, obviously friendly. Gradually, Tiffany got used to jogging on the beach with Max running after her, and Mrs Johnson watching them run. And they began their conversation and Tiffany began to know about Mrs Johnson, who was in her late seventies and lived alone as well. Or rather, with Max, she was not alone.
One day, Tiffany went for her usual jog, but she didn’t see Max. She felt a bit upset that he wasn’t following her. However, in the following days, Mrs Johnson and Max still didn’t show up on the beach. “Where has he gone Did they move somewhere ” Tiffany wondered. With curiosity, Tiffany decided to figure out what had happened. The next day, she went to knock Mrs Johnson’s door, however, receiving no response. Feeling more concerned, she then asked around the neighborhood. A neighbour mentioned that Mrs Johnson suffered a heart attack several days ago and had been brought to hospital. Tiffany’s heart sank. She quickly called the local hospital and finally found Mrs Johnson, who was resting in her hospital bed, looking weak but delighted to see Tiffany. Mrs Johnson said she missed Max terribly, who had to be left at home alone.
Tiffany offered to take care of Max until Mrs Johnson recovered. Mrs Johnson was more than grateful for her kindness. Over the next few weeks, Tiffany balanced her daily routine with caring for Max. She walked him to the beach, and he quickly connected with Tiffany. She even brought Max to visit Mrs Johnson, whose health gradually improved. When Mrs Johnson finally returned home, Tiffany and Max were there to welcome her. After that, Tiffany, Mrs Johnson and Max were often seen walking along the beach together. Tiffany realized that her move to Maine had brought her more than just a change of scenery — it had given her a new family.
