“I walked long distances to school in worn-out shoes, carrying my stationery and homework not in a school bag but in hands. Unable to afford exercise books, I worried about losing my assignments written on old bits of paper.” Tinotenda recalls in a low voice, “Hunger became all too familiar and I went almost the entire school day without eating anything.”
Tinotenda, a student from a small rural farming town in Zimbabwe, lost her father during primary school. “My learning was almost stopped as my mother struggled to support us on her own.” Tinotenda wept, saying, “My secondary education seemed out of reach then.”

Wild fig trees may provide an inexpensive, effective way to monitor mercury (汞) pollution near small-scale gold mining sites throughout the Global South, a recent study suggests.
Published in Frontiers in Environmental Science, the analysis looked at whether fig trees can be used as a biomonitoring tool near small-scale gold mines. The mines, located largely in South America, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, use liquid mercury to separate ore (矿石) and gold, unleashing high levels of mercury pollution. The polluted air generated by burning mercury-gold amalgams (合金) to get gold can endanger health in humans and animals. But the industry — largely unregulated — lacks reliable monitoring data, the researchers write.
The researchers introduced a fast-growing fig tree that thrives throughout the tropics. The trees grow annual rings, which is uncommon among tropical trees. The researchers analyzed tree cores from five study sites in Peru’s Madre de Dios region to determine whether fig trees could serve as natural indicators of mercury pollution levels in the area. Three of the sites were near small mines, and two were located far away.
Mercury levels in the trees’ rings were “strongly correlated” with atmospheric mercury levels, the researchers found, and trees nearest the mines had higher concentrations (浓度) of mercury in their rings. Passive air sampling confirmed the mercury measurements.
The study examined tree rings from 1941 to 1999 and 2000 to 2019. At two sites near modern mining towns where mercury-gold amalgams were burned, the team found lower mercury concentrations in tree rings during the earlier period, when mining in the area wasn’t well established, and higher levels after gold mining expanded.
Trees provide “a much more widely spread and cheaper network of biomonitoring” over decades than typical monitoring of small-scale mines, which focuses on short periods, the researchers write.
“This really offers a method that can be employed throughout the Global South to understand changes in mercury over time, as well as space indicators of mercury.” Jacqueline Gerson, a study author and assistant professor of biological and environmental engineering in Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, said in a news announcement.
28.What does the underlined word “unleashing” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Releasing. B.Detecting. C.Absorbing. D.Reducing.
29.Why are fig trees from different sites analyzed
A.To figure out the effect of mercury pollution.
B.To test if they can monitor mercury pollution.
C.To study the exact cause of mercury pollution.
D.To see how they help reduce mercury pollution.
30.What can we learn from the passage
A.Tree rings show lower mercury levels after mining expanded.
B.Typical mine monitoring covers broader areas than tree rings.
C.Mercury-gold amalgams were burned only from 2000 to 2019.
D.Tree rings offer a long-term and cheap way to monitor mercury.
31.What is Jacqueline Gerson’s attitude towards using fig trees to monitor mercury pollution
A.Concerned. B.Approving. C.Objective. D.Uninterested.
Is your green my green Probably not. What appears as pure green to me is likely to look a bit yellowish or bluish to you. Moreover, an object’s color may appear differently against different backgrounds or under different lighting. It might naturally lead you to think colors are relative to observers and viewing conditions, and so nothing has a true color. But perceptual variation is misleading. We argue in the book The Metaphysics of Colors that colors are as objective as temperature.
People’s choices vary significantly when asked to pick the “unique green” from a selection of color chips. A gray object appears darker against a lighter background than a darker one, and a red apple might look green or blue under different lighting. These facts don’t negate the objectivity of colors. An apple’s redness remains unchanged even if it appears differently under certain conditions. In other words, the properties of an object are independent of how they appear to you.
To determine an object’s color, place it beside another object under the same lighting and background conditions. If no differences are detected by observers, the colors are considered the same. This ability to match colors shows their objectivity is independent of individual perception, much like the temperature of water is independent of how cold it feels to different people.
In the field of color science, scientific laws are used to explain how objects and light affect perception and the colors of other objects. Such laws, for instance, predict what happens when you mix colored paints, and when you look at colored objects in various lighting conditions. Philosophers like Hilary Putnam argue that if something is essential to science, it must be real and objective.
Colors are also meaningful in the survival and evolution of animals. Many animals use colors strategically to send warning signals or attract mates. For example, some dam selfish (雀鲷鱼)have ultraviolet patterns that can only be seen by their species, aiding recognition and mating while hiding from predators that cannot perceive ultraviolet light.
In sum, our ability to determine whether objects are colored the same or differently and the essential roles they play in science suggest that colors are as real and objective as temperature.
32.What is the misleading belief about color
A.Everything has a true color. B.Colors are generally subjective.
C.Yellowish and bluish are puzzling. D.Colors aren’t affected by conditions.
33.What’s the author’s suggestion for determining an object’s color
A.Detect consistent lighting and backgrounds.
B.Match colors using independent perception.
C.Exchange disagreements with other observers.
D.Make comparisons under the same conditions.
34.Why does the author mention dam selfish in paragraph 5
A.To explain a concept. B.To illustrate a rule.
C.To introduce a theory. D.To prove an argument.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Laws of Colors. B.Green Is Green.
C.Colors and Temperature. D.Colors in Evolution.
Show someone your support
Sometimes people who are close to us go through difficult times. That could include coping with an illness or other big changes in their life. 36 Just wanting to support them is a good place to begin. Here are some ideas to consider.Let them know you care.
Your friend or family member may feel like talking about what they are going through, or they may not. It’s always appropriate to let them know you care and will be there for them. 37 Making a video expressing your love for them is another option. You could also ask them if it would be OK to bring or mail them a baked treat, or you might put together a care package.Spend time together.
38 If possible, ask if they would like to do something together, like take a walk, watch a movie, or do a puzzle. If it’s a family member who lives far away, you can ask if they want to video chat or talk on the phone. You could also send them photos of your day to help them feel connected. 39
People who care about you likely want you to keep your daily routine as much as possible, even while they are going through something challenging. But you might also be able to step in when possible, with tasks like doing the dishes, looking after a pet, or ironing clothes.Pay attention to their needs and wants.
This is often the hardest, but most important way to show you care. Even if they are just telling you a story about something silly that happened at the supermarket, it’s important that you respond appropriately. If you ignore them when it comes to simple things, they won’t feel that you care about them. 40
A.Help out with small tasks.
B.Stick to your daily routine.
C.Your presence alone can be comforting.
D.Even small gestures can mean a lot to others.
E.You could show your care by making a card with a note inside.
F.Therefore, they are much less likely to share anything deeper with you.
G.You probably wish you could do something to help but might not be sure how.

In Sara’s earliest memories, every spring, her mother’s garden was filled with colorful flowers that seemed to appear magically. Way back in one November, before the first frost, Mother dressed Sara warmly and took her to plant bulbs (球茎)in the yard.
Sara opened a brown paper bag and looked inside. “The bulbs are so ugly,” Sara said. “They’re not pretty now, but they will be in spring.” Mother said. They spent the morning planting. Sara watched the empty ground, waiting for something to happen.
Winter passed. Sara was the first to spot green shoots pushing up through the dirt. “Mother, come quick!” She shouted. Mother rushed out, exclaiming, “They’re growing!” Sara checked their progress every day, sometimes twice. Watching them grow into beautiful flowers, Sara felt her hard work paid off.
On the last day of April, Mother took Sara to buy baskets. “We’re going to make May baskets,” she explained. Back home, Mother showed Sara how to fill the baskets with flowers. “We’ll leave them on neighbors’ doorsteps as a surprise.” “I don’t want to make May baskets! We should keep the flowers!” she cried. Mother smiled and said comfortingly, “Flowers are like kindness. Their beauty is meant to be shared. Every kindness you give returns as a blessing in some way. Just wait and see.” Sara unwillingly helped Mother finish up, leaving the garden as empty as it had looked in November.
Early the next morning, Mother woke Sara, singing, “It’s May! The lovely month of May!” She flipped off her bedcovers. “It’s May! No longer in bed can you stay. It’s May! Time to deliver the flowers!”
Everything ready, they hit the sidewalk with their baskets. Stopping near the side of the first house. Mother handed Sara a basket and ducked(躲)behind a bush, “You ring the doorbell, run back here,” she said, “then let’s wait and see. Quick!”
“OK!”

1.续写词数应为80词左右;

In the summer of twenty twenty, with a group of students, I flew from America to China to learn Chinese. My host family welcomed me with open arms. My anxiety over the huge language barrier disappeared after a delicious homemade dinner at the first night. From that moment on, we developed a close bond, and I was treated as a member of their own family. My host sisters were attracted by my discussions of Latin and ancient Greek, and I was excited by the details of their traditions they told me. We all learned a lot about each other’s cultures, and I was soon well adapted. The group of students I studied with in China came from different countries. We became a very tight-knit family through this academic and cultural exchange. I greatly benefited from this experience. We studied together, taking field trips and exploring China cities. We supported one another through study hours, and offer words of encouragement to each other in the face of hardships. I returned to my country after I finished the two year exchange activity. I’m looking forward to another chance to go to China.

根据第二段中划线词前“The mines, located largely in South America, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, use liquid mercury to separate ore and gold, (这些矿场主要位于南美洲、东南亚和撒哈拉以南非洲,使用液态汞分离矿石和黄金)”及划线词后“high levels of mercury pollution. The polluted air generated by burning mercury-gold amalgams (合金) to get gold can endanger health in humans and animals.(高水平的汞污染。通过燃烧汞金合金提取黄金时产生的受污染空气,会危害人类和动物的健康)”可知,液态汞被用来分离矿石和黄金,从而释放出高水平的汞污染,故划线词unleashing与A选项Releasing“释放”意义相近。故选A。
根据第三段中“The researchers analyzed tree cores from five study sites in Peru’s Madre de Dios region to determine whether fig trees could serve as natural indicators of mercury pollution levels in the area.(研究人员分析了秘鲁马德雷德迪奥斯地区五个研究地点的树芯,以确定无花果树是否可以作为该地区汞污染水平的自然指标)”可知,研究人员分析来自不同地点的无花果树是为了测试它们是否可以监测汞污染。故选B。
根据第六段中“Trees provide “a much more widely spread and cheaper network of biomonitoring” over decades than typical monitoring of small-scale mines, which focuses on short periods, the researchers write.(研究人员写道,与典型的小型矿山监测相比,树木在几十年间提供了一个“分布更广、更便宜的生物监测网络”,而典型的小型矿山监测则侧重于短期)”可知,树轮提供了一种长期且廉价的监测汞污染的方法。

根据文章第一段中的“It might naturally lead you to think colors are relative to observers and viewing conditions, and so nothing has a true color. But perceptual variation is misleading.(这可能会自然地让你认为颜色是相对于观察者和观察条件而言的,所以没有什么东西有真正的颜色。但感知上的变化是具有误导性的。)”可知,人们通常会认为颜色是相对的,即主观的,这是一种误导性的信念。所以关于颜色的误导性信念是颜色通常是主观的。故选B项。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“To determine an object’s color, place it beside another object under the same lighting and background conditions. If no differences are detected by observers, the colors are considered the same.(为了确定一个物体的颜色,把它放在另一个物体旁边,在相同的照明和背景条件下。如果观察者没有发现差异,则认为颜色相同。)”可知,作者建议在相同条件下进行比较来确定物体的颜色。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Colors are also meaningful in the survival and evolution of animals. Many animals use colors strategically to send warning signals or attract mates. For example, some dam selfish have ultraviolet patterns that can only be seen by their species, aiding recognition and mating while hiding from predators that cannot perceive ultraviolet light.(颜色在动物的生存和进化中也具有重要意义。许多动物有策略地使用颜色来发出警告信号或吸引配偶。例如,一些雀鲷鱼具有只能被其物种看到的紫外线模式,有助于识别和交配,同时躲避无法感知紫外线的捕食者。)”可知作者提到雀鲷鱼是为了证明颜色在动物生存和进化中具有重要意义这一观点,也就是证明前面提出的关于颜色具有客观性的论点。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。文章开篇提到“Is your green my green Probably not. What appears as pure green to me is likely to look a bit yellowish or bluish to you.(你眼中的绿色是我的绿色吗?可能不是。在我看来是纯绿色的东西,在你看来可能有点偏黄或偏蓝。)”,描述了不同人对颜色感知可能不同这一现象,后文展开论述,如第二段中的“An apple’s redness remains unchanged even if it appears differently under certain conditions. In other words, the properties of an object are independent of how they appear to you.(即使苹果在某些条件下看起来不同,它的红色仍然不变。换句话说,物体的属性与它们在你眼中的样子无关。)”和第三段中的“This ability to match colors shows their objectivity is independent of individual perception, much like the temperature of water is independent of how cold it feels to different people.(这种匹配颜色的能力表明它们的客观性独立于个人的感知,就像水的温度独立于不同人对它的寒冷感觉一样。)”,最后一段得出结论“In sum, our ability to determine whether objects are colored the same or differently and the essential roles they play in science suggest that colors are as real and objective as temperature.(总之,我们确定物体颜色是否相同或不同的能力,以及它们在科学中发挥的重要作用,表明颜色和温度一样真实和客观。)” 故选项B(绿色就是绿色。)
