Here are four most common ways for you to win college scholarships (奖学金).
Excel in the classroom
Your GPA and standardized test scores can attract the attention of a top college—and organizations that can help you pay for it. While it’s important to go after A’s, think about other ways to separate yourself from others. You might consider taking Advanced Placement courses (AP course) or serving as an assistant to your favorite teacher. Both could help you win a Phi Delta Kappa International Scholarship, for example.
Be active on campus
Playing a sport or joining in other after-class activities is a great way to strengthen your scholarship applications by showing you’re a well-rounded teenager. If sports aren’t your thing, you might consider joining the school’s band or theater group. Remember to choose activities that are in line with your interests and goals.
Get involved in your community
By volunteering in your community, you’ll show that you think beyond yourself. Your volunteering experience could help you win a national award like the one offered by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. The $20,000 scholarship is given each year to 150 high school seniors. If you’re struggling to find volunteer projects in your neighborhood, consider DoSomething.org, which allows you to make an impact from your desk.
Pursue work opportunities relevant to your future major
Getting a part-time job could also lead to a scholarship, either from your employer or from an organization that’s impressed by your devotion. By taking on a part-time job that’s closely connected to your eventual major, you can show scholarship organizations that you mean business when it comes to your future. If you work at an ice cream shop that’s a member of the National Ice Cream Retailers Association, for example, you could win one of 10 scholarships worth between $1,000 and $3,500.

C. The International scholarship. D. Sports team information.
24.What job experience benefits scholarship chances

Like almost every set of new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started taking pictures of their son, Noah, practically from the moment he was born.
When he was about three months old, Elizabeth noticed something odd when she took his picture. The flash on their digital camera created the typical red dot in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash was being reflected back at the camera by something.
When Elizabeth mentioned the strange phenomenon to their doctor, she shined a light into Noah’s eye, saw the same white reflection, and immediately sent the family to an eye expert.
A white reflection instead of a red one is an obvious sign of eye cancer, and that is exactly what Noah had. He went through months of treatment, but doctors eventually could not save his eye. Retinoblastoma, the scientific name of Noah’s tumor (肿瘤), is treatable if discovered early.
Bryan Shaw couldn’t help but wonder whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back over every baby picture of Noah he could find—thousands of them—and discovered the first white spot in a photo taken when Noah was 12 days old. As time went on, it appeared more frequently. “By the time he was four months old, it was showing up in 25 percent of the pictures taken of him per month”, Bryan said, who was a chemistry professor at Baylor University in Texas.
It was too late for Noah’s eye, but Bryan was determined to put his insights to good use. He created a database that recorded the cancer’s appearance in every photo. He also collected photos and gathered the data from eight other children with retinoblastoma. Equipped with that data, he began to work with coworkers in Baylor’s computer science department to develop a smartphone app that can scan the photos in the user’s camera roll to search for white eye and can be used as a kind of instrument for examining the eyes.
Called White Eye Detector, it is now available free of charge on Google Play and in Apple’s App Store. “I just kept telling myself, I really need to do this,” Bryan said. “This disease is tough to detect. Not only could this software save vision, but it can save lives.”
26.What made Noah’s eyes fail to be treated
A. The oddness of the eye disease.
B. The lack of advanced equipment.
C. The ignorance of the doctor.
D. The delayed detection of the disease.
27.How could the app detect the eye disease
A. It could identify white eye with enough data.
B. It could compare the eyes in different pictures.
C. It could scan the database recorded by Bryan.
D. It could analyse the shape of different eyes.
28.What does “this” in the last paragraph mean
A. Raising people’s awareness. B. Creating White Eye Detector.
C. Sharing the app for free. D. Detecting eye cancer early.
29.Which of the following words can best describe Bryan
A. Creative and selfless. B. Generous and brave.
C. Devoted and honest. D. Patient and determined.
30.What is the text mainly about
A. How family sadness influenced scientific work.
B. How technology helped in medical treatment.
C. How a personal loss led to a life-saving invention.
D. How early detection faced problems in eye diseases.

Sparkling water (气泡水) lovers, here’s some good news: A new study suggests that the carbonation (碳化) in sparkling water might play a surprising role in how our bodies process sugar.
While many choose sparkling water as a healthier replacement of sugary sodas, researchers at Japan’s Tesseikai Neurosurgery Hospital have found that its bubbles (气泡) could impact sugar processing in unexpected ways.
It’s long been known that sparkling water can help reduce hunger by making us feel fuller. However, this new study explores deeper, examining how carbon dioxide (CO2)—the gas responsible for the bubbles—affects our blood cells. When we drink sparkling water, CO2 is taken into the bloodstream through the stomach wall. There, it meets with red blood cells, which contain an enzyme (酶). This enzyme turns CO2 into bicarbonate, giving rise to a chain reaction that may enhance the body’s ability to process sugar.
The researchers made this discovery through their observation of kidney dialysis (肾透析) treatments. During dialysis, as blood passes through a special machine, sugar levels drop, even though the surrounding blood has more sugar in it. This suggests that something about this process helps the body use sugar better.
However, before you start replacing all your regular water with the sparkling variety, it’s important to understand the extent of these effects. During a four-hour dialysis treatment, processing nearly 50 liters of blood only results in using up about 9.5 grams of sugar, the amount in a single tablespoon. The amount of CO2 in a glass of sparkling water would have an even smaller effect.
What’s more, not everyone should rush to buy sparkling water. Some people might experience discomfort, particularly if they have easily upset stomachs. As with most things in nutrition, a proper amount is key. While sparkling water won’t be the magic solution to weight loss, it might be doing a bit more than we thought to help our bodies process sugar. Consider it one more small tool in the toolbox of healthy living, alongside balanced nutrition and regular exercise.
31.How does sparkling water influence sugar processing according to the new study
A. By turning CO2 into sugar. B. By increasing our appetite.
C. By interacting with red blood cells. D. By limiting the activity of enzyme.
32.What makes sugar levels reduce during the dialysis process
A. CO2 that removes sugar from blood.
B. The sparkling water that contains CO2.
C. The machine which takes in the sugar in the blood.
D. The machine that helps the body use sugar better.
33.Why are some figures listed in Paragraph 5
A. To show that sparkling water is a perfect replacement for dialysis.
B. To prove that the impact of sparkling water on sugar levels is limited.
C. To indicate that the effect of dialysis is far from satisfactory.
D. To prove that sparkling water can significantly increase sugar levels.
34.What is the writer’s attitude towards sparkling water
A. Objective. B. Disapproving. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
35.What is the best title of the passage
A. Sparkling water: a good way to keep us healthy
B. Sparkling water: a healthy replacement of sugary sodas
C. Carbonated water: a perfect drink for weight loss
D. Carbonated water: a helper in sugar processing

How to Make Friends in a New School
Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be strange, and you don’t even know where to go for your own classes. 36 If you use the following skills, you can quickly turn some strangers into friends.
Be Confident
If you want to make friends, first you need to put yourself out there. Don’t be afraid to show people who you are. Talk about the things you like and do best. 37 For example, join a sports team or a club, where you can meet people who share your interests.
Be Kind and Friendly
Kindness goes a long way. When you notice someone new, try to say hello to him. Offer to help him with his work, or show him around the school. 38 Remember, everyone is nervous when they are in a new environment. A small act of kindness can make others feel more comfortable, and it also shows that you are easy to get along with.
Be a Good Listener
Listening is an important part of making friends. When someone is talking to you, look at him and keep eye contact. Don’t cut them off. 39 This will make him feel like you value his opinion and want to get to know him better.
Stay Positive
No one likes to be around someone who is always complaining. Try to stay positive, even when things go wrong. 40 If you see someone feeling sad or lost, try to cheer him up. Being positive makes you more attractive to others and helps you make friends more easily.
Making new friends takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. With a little patience and the right attitude, you’ll have a group of friends in no time.
A. Try to find someone to talk to when you feel lonely.
B. It’s also a good idea to take part in activities that interest you.
C. Ask questions to show that you are interested in what he is saying.
D. You don’t need to be popular, but you do need to be respectful.
E. It can be hard to make friends at first, but don’t let that stop you.

M: Thanks, ing from my picky sister, that’s high praise!
W: Seriously, you should join a band. Isn’t that what Mr. Lee keeps saying too
M: Yeah, my teacher’s been pushing me. But between school and guitar lessons on Mondays and
Wednesdays… Adding band practice on Saturdays I’ll have less time for homework.

W: So Tom, how’s your stay in China
M: It’s been great though everyone keeps calling me Johnson—that’s my last name. In China, the family name comes first, right

M: No worries! And thanks again for letting me stay with your family.
W: You’re welcome. I am sorry your apartment is not ready for you.
M: That’s OK.
W: Tomorrow, I’ll show you around the city.
M: Sounds great! Actually I went for a walk in the park this afternoon.
W: Really
M: Yeah! Guess what A whole group of people were dancing together! You’d never see that in England.

Welcome to Life Today. Most people in the world enjoy good movies. But there are big differences between cultures about what makes a movie good. Ever since the beginning of movie-making in 1878, America’s Hollywood productions have been on the top of the movie industry. France also started making films soon after, just around the year 1900. Other countries followed, and the movies reflected the cultures, just like foods and architecture do. Hollywood movies often present the personal value, and many have positive endings. There is a trend of some Chinese movies having sad but thoughtful endings. Movies from Iran are usually seen by Westerners as being very slow, but meaningful. Popular Indian movies are often long and include a lot of cultural music and dancing. The group of people that makes a movie—writers, producers, directors, actors—put their individual personalities into the art they are creating. Most importantly, though, each movie represents the culture of the society where it is made.
