Nowruz, which means a new day, is a holiday marking the arrival of spring and the first day of the year in Iran, whose solar calendar begins on March 21st.
When is Nowruz and how is it celebrated
Nowruz is celebrated on March 21st every year. Many people start getting ready for this special day weeks in advance. They dance and fill containers with water at home to bring good health and remove bad luck.
On the last Wednesday before Nowruz, many people celebrate Chaharshanbe Suri. On this night, they jump over fires or go to doors knocking spoons to scare away bad luck. Some people also bring gifts for the spirits of the dead, who they believe visit before the spring celebration begins.
Nowruz is a spring festival that focuses on new growth and new life. People celebrate with seeds and eggs. Families set up tables covered with seven special items that start with the letter “s” in Farsi, called haft-seen. These tables can also include eggs, mirrors, and poetry.
Who celebrates Nowruz
It’s also an official holiday in Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Besides, it’s widely celebrated in places with Persian communities like India.
In 2009, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed the holiday on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, stating that it “promotes values of peace and unity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighborliness”.

Born in 2001, He Fuqu graduated with a degree in elderly services. He began her career at 19 as an intern (实习) caregiver. In March 2023, He joined her current company and quickly advanced to become the youngest director at the nursing home.
“Most of the managers at our nursing home are quite young, with the oldest being under 30,” He said, explaining that they focus on creating an active and elderly-friendly environment.
And it works. He has observed that the bright young leaders have brought positive changes to the industry. While traditional nursing homes primarily focus on providing basic care and essential services, her current institution goes further. The young team not only ensures that residents’ (住客的) basic needs are met but also prioritizes (优先处理) their mental well-being. Alongside daily activities like singing and crafting, He organizes special events such as afternoon teas and games for the elderly.
He’s nursing home currently cares for 25 elderly residents, most of whom cannot live independently, or are not good at expressing themselves, but they also long for more interactions and emotional connections. He’s active personality helps her easily connect with the residents, earning their trust. For example, during a Chinese New Year, He had to stay at the nursing home for work, marking her first time away from her family for the holiday. One elderly woman gave her a red envelope and a bag of candy, despite her polite refusal.
In addition, He revised the nursing care level chart to better match the services provided. “This adjustment helps meet the residents’ needs more effectively,” He explained.
Working in a nursing home, He has encountered the realities of aging and death long before most people in their 20s even consider them. At first, He would panic when calling for an ambulance during emergencies (紧急情况), but now, she acts with ease. “Getting old, dying..., it’s just life. We gotta make peace with it,” He said.
24. What is special about He’s nursing home
A. It has a young management team.
B. It focuses more on basic services.
C. It creates an expensive environment.
D. Its activities are limited to mental ones.
25. How does He work with the elderly residents
A. By meeting their many material needs.

D. By connecting them with each other.

A. He is emotionally suffering from the job.
B. He has learned to accept aging and death.
C. He avoids discussing aging and death with the elderly.
D. He has a lot to learn to deal with constant emergencies.
27. Which of the following can best describe He
A. Grateful and athletic. B. Confident and fair.
C. Curious and serious. D. Lively and expert.

Sunglasses, or dark glasses, have always guarded against strong sunlight, but is there more to “shade” than we think Our eyes are sensitive and react immediately to strong light. Protecting them against light — even the brightness reflected off snow — is important for everyone. Himalayan mountaineers wear goggles (护目镜) for this exact purpose.
The Roman Emperor Nero is reported as holding polished gemstones to his eyes for sun protection as he watched fighting gladiators (角斗士). Canadian far north Copper Inuit and Alaskan Yup’ik wore snow goggles made of whalebone and with tiny slits. They were protected against the snow’s brilliant light when hunting. The narrow eye holes also helped them to focus on their animals.
In 12th-century China, judges wore sunglasses with smoked quartz lenses (石英镜片) to hide their facial expressions — perhaps to keep their dignity or not convey emotions. In the 18th century, noble Venetian ladies held green colored glasses in tortoiseshell frames to their eyes, a design similar to a hand-held mirror. These glasses were used to protect their eyes and eyes of their children from sunlight.
Protection of the eyes took an interesting turn when movie making began. Film stars’ eyes became stressed as artificial studio set lights were very strong. They began to wear colored glasses outside the studio as their eyes became painful. They sought out privacy by wearing dark glasses on public occasions as well.
The first anti-glare (防炫光的) glasses, originally with green glass blocking ultraviolet (UV) rays, were invented in 1939. Their shapes reduced light from any angle. Dark glasses were to become increasingly popular accessories from the late 1920s. They took on new life as basic male and female fashions in the 1960s and 1970s.
There are hundreds of different designs on the market today. Dark glasses are everywhere: worn on the street, for driving, on the beach and on the tennis court. Dark glasses are rich with different meanings.

B. To hide their reactions during trials.
C. To strengthen their authority during trials.
D. To show their professional identity as a judge.
31. What can we infer from the text about sunglasses
A. Not all expensive sunglasses can block UV rays.
B. They are mainly used for fashion purposes today.
C. They were originally used to protect film stars’ privacy.
D. They have served as more than a tool for eye-protection.

There’s no doubt that one of the greatest human achievements is the exploration of the space. Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit around the moon in 1961, scientists have been pushing the boundaries further and further. But until now the exploration into the unknown has been dominated(主导) by men.
Of course, in the past, women were also included in the space projects and played an active role on the ground and behind the scenes. For example. they worked as seamstresses( 女裁缝师),sewing vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA’s key works would never have been possible without them. Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space. But this was not women’s only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be sent into space. However, after that, space flight programs were slow to employ women. In the USA. NASA didn’t accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978.
But attitudes have changed and leading officials at NASA say that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a sex-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women are trained for science and technology jobs. As Allison McIntryre told the BBC, “My director is a woman, We have female astronauts. We haven’t put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman.”

34. What is Allison McIntryre’s attitude toward women astronauts

In 1989, I had just graduated from high school. I had three months before college started, and I found it hard to choose a career path. My choices were limited. I could become a doctor or an engineer, or go into finance (金融) after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle, one of the elders in the family, suggested that I be a one-month intern (毕业实习生) at an international company and then a one-month intern at a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a great idea.
I was accepted as a one-month intern at a foreign bank. I learned how the finance world worked, made new friends, and enjoyed the relaxing working environment.
The month passed quickly, and I started working at a leading hospital. This experience was completely different. The hospital was very demanding. The days started at 7 am (compared to 9 am at the bank) and were full of endless duties. It was crazy.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank offered a more relaxing working environment, better working hours, and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and something unpredictable (难以预料的), but the studying and training were very hard. It seemed like business was going to win.
In the last few days of my hospital internship, I was driving home after a very busy night. On the way, I saw an old man and an old woman standing by the road, looking very worried. I pulled over and asked what was wrong. The old man told me that his wife suddenly felt very sick and needed to go to the hospital immediately. Hearing this, I decided to help them.

How to learn English words
As we know, memorising enough words plays an important role in English learning. However, to some students, it is quite difficult and boring sometimes.
As for me, I find it an effective way to make vocabulary cards, which are convenient for me to review the words I’ve learnt at any time. In addition, I prefer memorising words by putting them in sentences. What’s more, don’t just remember the Chinese meanings of the words. Instead, try to remember the words’ meanings in English. This will help you use those words correctly.
Do remember methods make a difference in your English learning. If you have mastered some, you will certainly not regard it boring.
67.One possible version:
I quickly got the old man and his wife into my car. I drove fast back to the hospital. On the way, I felt nervous, afraid of missing the best time for treatment. When we arrived at the hospital, I helped the old man take his wife to the emergency room. After the doctors started treating the old man’s wife, I quietly left the hospital. However, that night, I could hardly sleep. The old man’s face and his wife’s painful expression kept appearing in my mind.
The next day, I went to see the old man and his wife. Their whole family stood up with grateful smiles on their faces. The old man held my hand and started crying. “Son, you are a kind person,” he repeated over and over again. After comforting them, I walked over to the old man’s wife. She tried to smile and held my hand. However, we didn’t speak any words. That day, I felt very excited and happy, which was the best mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I knew I had found my career path — medicine.
