Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They
want to bring water to the deserts, so people can live and grow food. They
are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is
becoming desert all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the desert.
Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the
earth. Some places on the earth don’t get much rain. But they still don’t
become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small
green plants are very important to dry places.
Plants don’t let the sun make the earth even drier. Plants do not let the wind
blow the dirt away. When a bit of rain falls, the plants hold the water.
Without plants, the land can become desert more easily.

四、 阅读理解。
Historically, people explored the ocean to find new ways to travel
around the world or to start new trade ways. Today, we pay more attention
to the ocean itself in the ocean exploration.
In recent years, new technology has made it easier to dive(潜水)
into the deep sea. Better submarines(潜艇), robots and cameras now
allow scientists to explore areas people couldn’t reach before. China’s deep
-ocean drilling vessel(大洋钻探船), Meng Xiang, can now be added
to the list.

Human beings actually don’t know much about the ocean. Believe it or
not, we know more about space than we do about the deep sea. Although
the ocean covers about 71% of the earth’s surface, 95% of it is
unexplored.
Why does so much of the ocean remain unknown? Part of the answer is
that it’s difficult to explore. Sure, it’s hard to get a spaceship into space.
But remember that in space, you can see things. The deep sea, however,
is hopelessly dark. Getting a light down there that can shine far enough to see
anything is no easy task.

That being said, ocean exploration is worth the risk and cost. The
ocean is connected to all of us and plays a role in everything from the air we
breathe, the food we eat and the transportation of the goods we buy to
weather and long-term climate trends(趋势).
Most of our knowledge of the ocean comes from shallower waters, but
deeper waters are becoming more important. Many fisheries are built in deep
waters. The deep ocean also holds plenty of oil, gas, metals and so on.

( B )1. Why didn’t scientists reach the deep sea in the past?
A. Because they didn’t think it was worth the risk.
B. Because they didn’t have high-level technology.
C. Because they wanted the knowledge from shallower waters.
D. Because they had no need to explore the deep sea.
B

( C )2. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. The Meng Xiang deep-ocean drilling vessel is popular with tourists.
B. The Meng Xiang deep-ocean drilling vessel is mainly used for trade.
C. China has made great progress in ocean exploration technology.
D. China is the first country to explore shallower and deeper waters.
C

( A )3. What can we get from the text?
A. We know more about shallower waters than deeper ones.
B. The ocean coverage is the largest and we have explored most of it.
C. More resources come from the shallower waters than from deeper ones.
D. We can see things very clearly in the deep sea.
A

六、 任务型阅读。〔人与自然——自然生态〕
阅读下面短文,并用英语回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
Today more than 20% of the land is desert, and this is growing. There
is a picture, for example, from a cave in Algeria(阿尔及利亚). It
shows cows and people. The area was very green, and plants grew there.
Many types of animals lived there. The picture is more than three thousand
years old. Today, the cave is in a desert. Why are the deserts growing?
There are three main reasons.

One reason is climate. The climate changed and rain did not come every
year. The sun was very hot and all the water in the soil disappeared(消失).
Another reason is animals. For hundreds of years, people who lived
near deserts kept goats. Goats like eating plants. They ate the plants, and
there weren’t any plants to stop the wind. When the wind blew, it blew all
the good soil away. Soon, there wasn’t any good soil and it was very
difficult for plants to grow.

The third reason is people. People cut down trees, so no trees stopped
the wind. Also, in some countries, people wanted to make electricity.
They changed the direction of the rivers and built dams(水坝). This
changed the direction of the underground water in other countries.
In many places this is a very big problem. We have to be very careful
about what we do to nature.

五、 阅读理解。〔人与自我——生活与学习〕
As we know, the desert covers large areas of the earth. In the desert,
there is very little rain and it is very hot during the day and so cold at night.
If you are a hiker who wants to cross the desert, it might be wise to know
what you should do in order to survive in the desert.
Try to find water in the desert. If you find a small piece of land where
the earth is wet, dig deep inside to look for water. Another method of
getting water is to cover a green plant with a plastic bag. As it breathes,
water vapour will collect inside the bag. Little by little, you can collect
enough water to drink.

Plan to travel at night and sleep during the day if you find you have to
stay in the desert for a period of time. If you can find any shade in the
desert, use it as a shelter to protect you from the strong sunlight.
Wear light-coloured clothes. You’ll be cooler if you wear that kind of
clothes, which can help your body become cool and protect you from
sunburn(晒伤).

Prepare to signal(示意) to planes passing overhead if you are caught
in the desert. During the day keep a smoky fire burning and at night, a
bright one. Spell out the word “SOS” on the ground, using whatever
materials you can find. In this way, you are more likely to be saved.

[妙笔生花]
Protecting the forests
Forests are of great importance.

They are home to countless
animals and plants, and provide us with fresh air. Moreover, forests
help prevent soil erosion and regulate the climate.

However, forests are facing serious problems. People are
cutting down trees for farming. This destroys the homes of animals and
makes many kinds of plants and animals die. To save forests, we can
plant more trees and use less paper. Calling on more people to protect
forests is also very important.
Let’s take action now. Join forest protection campaigns and make a
difference.
