Cosmetics like lipstick, foundation and eyeliner are commonly used by women nowadays. But what did Chinese women use for makeup in ancient times
Over the past several years Wang Yifan, 29, has restored more than 30 kinds of cosmetics and makeup tools from different dynasties.
Wang has been fascinated by cosmetics since she was a child. She learned the formulas for some ancient cosmetics and basic techniques such as extracting plant pigments from her grandfather who studies Chinese ancient cosmetics.
“At that time, I didn’t know what exactly ‘restoration’ was,” Wang said. “I just learned how to do it without any theoretical knowledge.”
After graduating from college in 2015, Wang devoted herself to researching ancient cosmetics. She spent five years gradually mastering systematical knowledge of restoring ancient cosmetics. She also learned from professionals who specialize in clothing and dying.
Basically, the restoration process of cosmetics includes the following steps: figuring out the ingredients, formula and effectiveness, doing experiments, making comparisons after testing and constant adjustment if any problems emerge. In her eyes, every step is a challenge. But finding the right components and formulas is the most difficult part as it could be the decisive factor regarding whether the cosmetics could be restored. Wang needs to examine references in many ancient books and paintings and unearthed relics. Sometimes, the same cosmetics have various formulas in different books, and the same ingredient might have different names during different time periods.
“Therefore, researching the formula is the most time-exhausting and energy-consuming step,” Wang said. After that, Wang needs to do experiments with the right makeup tools and techniques. Any mistakes can lead to failure.
For example, Wang restored a kind of powder used by Empress Wu Zetian. This powder was made of motherwort, a plant used in herbal medicine. Wang had to learn crude drug processing from experts. It took her two years to recreate the powder.
Although the process is complicated and tough, Wang finds it worthwhile. “Restoring cosmetics offers another perspective for people to learn Chinese history and know more about our nation,” Wang said.
Now, more people know the industry due to exposure on social media. “What’s more, China has been attaching more importance to traditional Chinese culture,” Wang said. “This boosts my confidence to continue to restore ancient cosmetics.”
24. Why is finding the right components and formulas the most difficult part according to Wang
A. Some formulas may not work.
B. The references are hard to get.
C. It is demanding and determines the outcome.
D. She lacks the professional knowledge of how to do it.
25. What does the example of Wu Zetian’s powder show
A. Wang still has a lot to learn.
B. Some ingredients have different names now.
C. Any mistakes in the process can lead to failure.
D. Restoring ancient cosmetics consumes a lot of time and energy.
26. Why does Wang feel it’s worthwhile to restore ancient cosmetics
A. It increases the popularity of ancient cosmetics.
B. It enables people to know more about China.
C. It has made her well known on social media.
D. It encourages the government to promote traditional Chinese culture.
27. What do Wang’s words in the last paragraph imply
A. Restoring ancient cosmetics is a promising career.
B. She is increasingly popular on social media.
C. Traditional Chinese culture is not valued.
D. She is not sure whether she’s doing something rewarding.

Do Cyber Schools Make the Grade
Students in Caldwell, Idaho, can attend class in their pajamas!
At Vallivue Virtual Academy, courses are taught online. Students work at home with parents, who serve as learning coaches. A certified teacher oversees the students' progress.
The cyber school was launched as a free option for students in kindergarten through grade 8 who have trouble succeeding in the district's traditional public school. Supporters of the program say that virtual learning can help students work at their own pace. If students struggle with subjects, they can take those courses online and spend more time on them. Valerie VanSelous, a teacher from Hopewell Township, N.J ,agrees. "Teachers, students, and parents need to accept new technology and not be afraid of it. Offering different teaching aids just might be the key to unlocking a student' s potential. "
Some also believe that attending virtual school can prepare students for college and for work after graduation. "We need to be responsible for working on our own,” says Angela Goscilo, a senior from Pound Ridge, N.Y. "We need to develop technology skills that will help us in whatever we do. Getting an early start is a good idea."
Not everyone gives cyber schools a passing grade, however. Some educators argue that online learning makes it hard for students to make friends. Payton Mcdonough, 13, a seventh grader from Glencoe, m., agrees. " I don't know how I could sit at a computer all day without actually interacting with my peers and teachers," he says.
In addition, virtual schools don’t have enough structure. Students who take online courses can set their own schedules, which will cause problems for students who have trouble staying motivated.
Many parents also feel that cyber schools put unrealistic time demands on them because they have to oversee their kids' daily work. Many of them have full-time jobs. How are they going to run their children's education, excel in their jobs, and take care of their other responsibilities at home
28. What is the cyber school intended for
A. Reducing the time students spend online.
B. Helping those who struggle in traditional schools.
C. Allowing teachers to work at their own pace.
D. Encouraging students to learn about technology.
29. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 5
A. Not everyone approves of cyber schools.
B. Not everyone has attended a cyber school.
C. Not everyone has given cyber schools a test.
D. Not everyone cares about students in cyber schools.
30. How do working parents feel about overseeing their kids' daily work
A. It's worthwhile.
B It's unnecessary.
C. It's demanding.
D It's discouraging.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. Students in Caldwell can attend class at home every day.
B. There are various arguments for and against virtual schools.
C. It's important for students to learn to work in the virtual world.
D. Cyber schools are better than traditional schools in many ways.
D
One of the problems damaging our planet is the number of things we throw away. Rubbish of all kinds is piling up in landfills and polluting our rivers and oceans. A more recent addition to the list of things we chuck away is e-waste--electronic items that are broken and not recycled. Now solutions are being found to give this stuff a new life.
Many millions of tons of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are discarded each year, partly because it's cheaper to replace them than fix them, but also because we lack the skills to repair them. A UN report claims the 50 million tons of e-waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tons by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world.
However, there's a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London, which is one of many found around the world. One of its volunteers, Francesco Calo, said, “This project allows you to reduce waste, extend the life of objects, and it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault. ”
As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another idea is e-waste mining. An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting these materials from electronic gadgets. It's thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional mining. With phones typically containing as many as 60 elements, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology.
At present, in countries where there is no legislation, much of it just gets dumped. However, the European Union, for example, is trying to tackle the problem by insisting manufacturers make appliances longer-lasting and supply spare parts for machines for up 10 years.
32. What is the passage mainly about
A. The Restart Project founded to get rid of e-waste.
B. The phenomenon of the sharp rise of electronic junk.
C. The damage caused by quantities of things we throw away.
D. Possible solutions to the growing amount of electronic waste.
33. Which word can replace the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 2
A. Produced. B. Promoted. C. Recycled. D. Abandoned.
34. What do we know about the Restart Project according to the text
A. It aims to reduce e-waste by providing repair service.
B. It offers poor people new devices to replace old ones.
C. It is a project recycling electrical and electronic junk.
D. It intends to make great profits by e-waste mining.
35. From which is the text probably taken
A. A science textbook. B. An environmental magazine.
C. A research paper. D. An economic journal.

Promoting Body Positivity Movement
“Don’t judge a book by its cover,” the popular saying goes. So what can we do to promote body positivity
Not comparing your body to others, particularly celebrities, is a good first step. ___37___ Comparing only creates a standard we think we need to reach and leads to feelings of disappointment if we aren’t up to scratch.

And finally, don’t forget that low self-esteem and body confidence issues affect everyone. There aren’t a lot of guys that are pushing the idea of body positivity. The only person who can truly affect your body positivity is you. Becoming comfortable with yourself is unlikely to be accomplished overnight — but don’t give up and just move. Remember that everyone is insecure sometimes. ___40___ Love what you look like.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.
W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise.
M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn’t really help our motivation much.
W: Don’t be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn’t have to be that demanding. Jacob Sattelmair, from Harvard University, has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.
M: Hmm... interesting.
W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes’ exercise a week had a 20% lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well too, lowering their death risk by 14%.
M: And what about the people who exercise 60 minutes as much as what I probably do Does that help
W: Of course.

W: Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico, which is a long way from shore. A team of researchers were trying to learn more about the fish and other creatures that live in this part of the sea. And we spent three days on a boat. The team used a piece of underwater equipment to measure water depth and temperature. The equipment also had a camera that sent images back to the boat. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times. However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite scared — mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid any longer. It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around. Everyone in the team was friendly. The experience was like having a holiday and it will help me work harder to become a scientist.

Cosmetics like lipstick, foundation and eyeliner are commonly used by women nowadays. But what did Chinese women use for makeup in ancient times
Over the past several years, Wang Yifan, 29, has restored more than 30 kinds of cosmetics and makeup tools from different dynasties.
25. What does the example of Wu Zetian’s powder show
A Wang still has a lot to learn.
C 25. D 26. B 27. A

B. It's unnecessary.
C. It's demanding.
D. It's discouraging.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. Students in Caldwell can attend class at home every day.
B. There are various arguments for and against virtual schools.
C. It's important for students to learn to work in the virtual world.
D. Cyber schools are better than traditional schools in many ways.

D 33. D 34. A 35. B

根据第一段“A more recent addition to the list of things we chuck away is e-waste--electronic items that are broken and not recycled. Now solutions are being found to give this stuff a new life.(最近在我们扔掉的东西清单上又增加了一个电子垃圾——坏了的、不能回收的电子物品。现在,人们找到了让这些物质焕发新生的方法。)”结合下文提到的三种方法:维修俱乐部,开采电子垃圾和立法可知,本文主要讲的是对日益增长的电子垃圾的解决方法。故选D项。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“partly because it's cheaper to replace them than fix them, but also because we lack the skills to repair them.(部分原因是更换它们比修理它们便宜,但也因为我们缺乏修理它们的技能。)” A. Produced. 生 产 ;B. Promoted.促进;C. Recycled.回收;D. Abandoned.
根据第三段“This project allows you to reduce waste, extend the life of objects, and it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault.(这个项目可以减少浪费,延长物品的使用寿命,还可以帮助那些无力处理出了故障的物品的人。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第一段“One of the problems damaging our planet is the number of things we throw away. Rubbish of all kinds is piling up in landfills and polluting our rivers and oceans.(破坏我们地球的问题之一是我们扔掉的东西的数量。各种垃圾堆积在垃圾填埋场,污染了我们的河流和海洋。)”以及引出的下文可知,文章主要讲的是关于电子垃圾回收的环境问题,因此这篇文章可能出现在有关环境保护的杂志上。故选B项。

Promoting Body Positivity Movement
“Don’t judge a book by its cover,” the popular saying goes. It reminds us that something’s appearance shouldn’t be the most important thing when we are determining its value. ___36___ Its message is that we should value ourselves for who we are warts and all. So what can we do to promote body positivity
Not comparing your body to others, particularly celebrities, is a good first step. ___37___ Comparing only creates a standard we think we need to reach and leads to feelings of disappointment if we aren’t up to scratch.
___38___ When someone says something nice, embrace it — don’t push it away or play it down. And flatter others too. If you think someone looks nice, or someone has a good idea, tell them, which can lift them up.
Appreciate your body for what it can do — walking, yoga, playing sports or otherwise. ___39___ You can be an incredible man regardless of your shape or size.
A. This is what the body positivity movement is all about.
B. Regular workout brings you a strong and capable body.
C. Stopping judging ourselves against our imperfections is important.
D. Be unapologetic about who you are and what you want as a person.
E. Learn to express your admiration, which promotes positive mental health.
F. Being insecure in your daily life is common and sometimes necessary.
G. We are surrounded by these idealized images of what it is to be beautiful.

根据前文““Don’t judge a book by its cover,” the popular saying goes. It reminds us that something’s appearance shouldn’t be the most important thing when we are determining its value.(俗话说:“不要以貌取人。”它提醒我们,当我们决定一个东西的价值时,它的外观不应该是最重要的)”和后文“Its message is that we should value ourselves for who we are warts and all. So what can we do to promote body positivity (它传达的信息是,我们应该珍惜自己的一切。那么我们能做些什么来提高身体积极性呢?)”可知,前文中的内容是介绍身体积极性运动的含义,所以选项A“这就是身体积极性运动的意义所在。”切合文意。故选A。
根据后文“When someone says something nice, embrace it — don’t push it away or play it down. And flatter others too. If you think someone looks nice, or someone has a good idea, tell them, which can lift them up.(当有人说好话时,接受它——不要把它推开或轻描淡写。也要奉承别人。如果你觉得某人很漂亮,或者某人的想法很好,告诉他们,这会让他们感到鼓舞)”可知,此处是指要学会赞扬别人,所以选项E“学会表达你的赞赏,这会促进积极的心理健康。”切合文意。故选E。

根据前文“Appreciate your body for what it can do — walking, yoga, playing sports or otherwise.(欣赏你的身体所能做的——散步、瑜伽、运动或其他)”和后文“You can be an incredible man regardless of your shape or size.(不管你的体型大小,你都可以成为一个了不起的人)”可知,此处是指经常锻炼能让身体很棒,所以选项B“经常锻炼能给你带来强壮而有能力的身体。”
根据前文“Becoming comfortable with yourself is unlikely to be accomplished overnight — but don’t give up and just move.

“only to do”是固定结构,表示意想不到的结果,所以用动词不定式to find。故填to find。
故填what。
“adjust”是动词,意为 “调整;调节”,“make adjustments to...”
“lend sb./sth. a sense of...” 故填a。
“commitment to...” 故填to。
故填were called。

The Power of Reading
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! It’s a great honor to share my thoughts of reading on this special World Reading Day.
Reading has been my cherished hobby since my childhood, when I would treasure every book that I could find. The books led me into a splendid world, in which I would share joys and sorrows with the characters. However, the most important is that the books can help me out when I feel low or I can’t figure out how to get along with others, etc. They really offer me good opportunities to grow up.

Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect.
