New York City has many remarkable parks and open spaces that are perfect for hanging out in warm weather. Here are four of our favorite places to take a scenic walk, plus where to eat nearby.
Louis Valentino, Jr. Park
Don’t let all of the factories fool you — Louis Valentino, Jr. Park has the best view of the Statue of Liberty. When you get hungry, stop by Red Hook Lobster Pound for mayo-coated lobster (龙虾). Sit at one of the cafe’s first come, first served outdoor tables, or eat on the waterfront.
Riverside Park
Stretching 4 miles from 72nd to 158th St, Riverside Park is perfect for hanging out along the Hudson River, enjoying beautiful views of New Jersey. If walking the whole way isn’t your thing, there’s a bike path too. Daily Provisions offers fantastic sandwich choices, like juicy chicken and smoked bacon.
Central Park
There are many reasons to walk through Central Park this spring: historic landmarks, great bird watching spots, and hanging out with friends. And while these are enjoyable activities, they’re even better with a pastrami sandwich from Pastrami Queen.
Ridgewood Reservoir
At Ridgewood Reservoir, you’ll find an easy hiking spot with a peaceful nature preserve and skyline views of Manhattan. After hiking, head to Rolo’s for various sandwich options. It has outdoor tables but no heaters, so you can take everything to go if it’s too cold out.

In my Australian backyard live many wild magpies (喜鹊) that are a hundred per cent free to come and go as they please. Despite the amazing bonds (纽带) I have formed with them, none of them have been raised by me personally; their real parents have brought them up in the wild.
I believe I have one of the most entertaining backyards in Australia. I posted a lot of interesting videos on the Internet. Some of you may be familiar with the video of the magpie hanging upside down off a towel, with a concerned onlooker standing beside him wondering what his friend is doing.
Battling severe social anxiety most of my life, I don’t often get out of my house much due to this. I prefer to keep to myself and spend time with birds rather than people. I don’t go out to parties or social events; in fact, I avoid all human interaction if possible! Even walking to the letterboxes some days can be a nightmare, for fear of the chance that I may come across some strangers and I have to speak to them. But I have found a positive way out of my situation. I am lucky enough to spend most of my time with the magpies in my backyard, and in return, I am able to form special relationships with every one of them. The magpies have been my best friends and light at the end of the tunnel.
When I look into the eyes of magpies I see beautiful souls and intelligent beings that have individual personalities and feelings, just like we do. Each magpie is unique and special; they have as much right to live on this Earth as we do. I could not imagine my life without the magpies; they are my feathered family. They have taught me a lot about their magpie world, which I am fortunate enough to be a part of.

C.Magpies can control their feelings. D.Magpies are too free to make friends with.

A.Man and nature B.My unique magpie friends

Whales live in oceans all over the world. Many species are increasing in number because many countries have stopped hunting them. However, some species are still endangered. Today, one of the biggest threats to whales is collisions (碰撞事故) with ships.
Ship collisions kill more than 20,000 whales every year, and this is a global problem. Ocean traffic is expected to grow by at least 240 percent by 2050, which will make collisions with whales even more likely. But a program called Whale Safe, recently tested in North American waters, can help protect whales from ships.
Whale Safe was started on the West Coast of the US in 2020 after an increase in whale collisions. The lead scientist of Whale Safe said that for every dead whale found, 10 more were believed to die without being recorded. Although there was a voluntary speed limit for ships, the team thought that warning ships about nearby whales could help reduce speeds and save more whales.
Whale Safe uses special buoys (浮标) with microphones to listen for whale sounds in the ocean. These buoys can separate whale calls from other ocean noises. The technology was developed by Mark Baumgartner at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. When whales are detected, the information is sent to nearby ships to warn them to slow down. The team also tracks ship speeds using a tracking system.
This program has worked very well. In California’s Santa Barbara Channel, a place known for many whale collisions, the number of ships that slowed down increased from 46 percent in 2019 to 63.5 percent in 2023.
Whale Safe is helping to protect whales and reduce the number of collisions with ships, giving these amazing animals a better chance to survive.

A.Loss of natural habitats. B.Increasing ocean pollution.
C.Accidents related to ships. D.Collisions with ships and other whales.
29.What did Whale Safe’s lead scientist mean
A.The problem of collisions between whales and ships was very serious.
B.Nearby ships had to change their original sailing routes.
C.Researchers should put more efforts into the protection.
D.The technology to track whales was not advanced.
30.What is the main purpose of Whale Safe’s buoys
A.To track ship speeds. B.To warn whales of danger.
C.To clean ocean noises. D.To listen for whale sounds.
31.What does the author think of Whale Safe
A.It needs more funding. B.It has brought positive results.
C.It is too detailed to apply. D.It has not made a significant impact.

Every Saturday, at a church in Gothenburg, Sweden, hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds gather. They speak more than 20 languages. As they prepare their instruments, a smiling man walks in. He greets everyone, steps onto the stage, and raises his baton (指挥棒). Music fills the room.
This is a music group called the Hope Orchestra, organized by John Smith. Since 2016, his free program has given homeless people from other countries, young people in need, and native Swedes the chance to learn an instrument, connect with others, and enrich their lives.
Smith grew up in a poor family in Venezuela. To help his family make ends meet, he started selling ice cream when he was in primary school. Across the street was a program called Music for All, which provides free classical music training to children who have no chance to learn it. At 10, Smith joined the group. “I fell in love with music from my first class,” he said. “For me, playing the violin is like feeling electricity.”
He also appreciated the group’s inclusive philosophy. “It didn’t matter whether I was the boy selling ice cream in front of the school or the son or daughter of the mayor,” he said. Finally, Smith worked for Music for All to help spread the group’s innovative (创新的) teaching methods worldwide. Even near the Arctic Circle, he started Greenland’s first youth orchestra.
It was this work that led him to first visit Sweden in 2015. In Stockholm, he was shocked to see many helpless people arriving in the country. The following year, he moved to Gothenburg where he offered a music group for those people. He started with 13 students. Most of them had no background in music, but he lent them instruments and began teaching them. He named the group the Hope Orchestra to inspire them.
“For me, that’s what a music education is about,” said Smith. “It’s about giving you new opportunities to learn about life, about challenges, about dreaming, and about connecting you to your soul.”
32.What do we know about the Hope Orchestra
A.It has been warmly received. B.It attracts any music lover.
C.It charges people for courses. D.It promotes music development.
33.What is Smith’s attitude to Music for All

34.Why did Smith help the people with the music group
A.He’d like to encourage them to cheer up. B.He wanted to improve their lives.
C.Music for All asked him to do that. D.People were eager to learn music.

Ways to help kids explore nature
Summer is the best time for kids to spend time in nature. Here are some ways to help kids explore nature in the summer holidays.
36 You don’t have to teach kids to love nature because they already do. Young children naturally love the outdoors and are fascinated by dirt, rocks, trees and so on. Therefore, the parent’s role is more about removing distractions like phones and tablets to enable that exploration to take place.
Allow for full engagement with nature. 37 Bug bites will eventually disappear. Cuts and broken bones heal in time. Let your kid throw themselves into the natural world freely and resist (忍住) the parental urge to shout, “Be careful! Put that down! Ew, that’s dirty!”
Set a goal for the summer. Make it your family’s mission to spend as much time outside as possible in summer. Sit down with your kids and brainstorm ways of doing so. Create a list of places in your area that you can visit and check them off the list. 38
Prepare an outdoor exploration kit (工具包). Make your nature adventure easy and safe by putting together an exploration kit in advance. Keep it in a box or a bag in your car or on your bike. 39 They can include hats, sunscreen, snacks, rain jackets and a water bottle.
Have a positive attitude. 40 Instead, consider it a welcome escape for yourself as well. Kids are the best possible excuse to get away from your desk, away from the piles of laundry and dishes, and out of the house for a few hours.
A.Clothes can be washed.
B.Start by going outside.
C.Letting the children get in touch with nature should not feel like a burden in any way.
D.You can also consider starting a nature club using online resources.
E.Let kids take the lead.
F.When kids are involved in planning, they’re more eager to participate.
G.Don’t forget the usual necessities that make outdoor adventures much more pleasant.

One day, Bart decided he wanted to get a dog. So he and his parents drove to the local animal shelter. There were two dogs that Bart liked. But he finally picked one named Scruffy. Scruffy looked exactly like his name—he was small, naughty with hair going in all directions. He just wanted to play and run around all the time.
Bart’s parents did not like Scruffy at all. Scruffy was too energetic for them. The other dog, called Lady, was a very pretty and quiet dog. Since his parents insisted, he agreed to adopt Lady but not Scruffy.
Back home, Lady slept in Bart’s room that night and the next night, too. Bart liked having her near him. He started to love that sweet dog.
On the third day, tragedy struck. For no apparent reason, Lady quietly died in her sleep. Bart felt heartbroken.
The next morning, after they had laid Lady to rest, Bart said, “Mom, Dad, I really liked the other dog, Scruffy. I know he liked me, too. Can’t we go back and get him ”
His parents told him to forget Scruffy because three days had gone by, and it would be too late. “Too late Too late for what ” he asked. “There are so many animal-lovers coming to the shelter, and if it were too late, Scruffy might have been adopted by someone else.” replied his father.
“What ” exclaimed Bart, not wanting to hear the answer. “But let’s go back anyway. Maybe we can find Scruffy again.”
So Bart’s parents drove him back to the shelter. When Dad parked the car, the three of them entered the shelter and directly went to the wire cage that had held Scruffy days before, only to find it was empty!
“Scruffy is gone! Mom, Dad, he’s gone! Why ”, shouted Bart in great despair.
At that moment, a gentle voice came from a young woman, “Can I help you, folks ”
“Yes, I want the dog that was here, in this cage. The dog is gone. I want that dog. Where’s the dog ” asked Bart anxiously.
“Oh, sorry to tell you he has been adopted by an old man already.” replied the woman.

Dear Jason,
How are you doing I am happy to know that there is a Chinese classical concert to be held in the school hall next Saturday. I am writing to invite you to go to the concert with me.
The concert starts at 13:30 pm and lasts for four hours. Performers are mainly from our school. They will perform many pieces of Chinese classical music, which will give a real feast for Chinese classical music lovers. By the way, a popular musician will show up and perform for us. The concert must attract lots of students and teachers. I’d be more than glad if you could go to the concert with me.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
Disappointed, Bart determined to find Scruffy back, though. He begged the young woman, “Please, can you tell me who adopted him I want to see if they’ll let me have Scruffy. He was the dog I really wanted.” The woman hesitated, but seeing the sad Bart, she compromised. “I can’t give you the details, but I can tell you he was adopted by an old man whose house is not far from here.” With a new surge of hope, Bart thanked her and rushed out of the shelter with his parents following behind. Hanging around the shelter, soon, they found Scruffy playing in a big yard. There, they met the old man and explained the purpose of the visit.
Moved by the kind kid, the old man decided to hand Scruffy to him. When Bart and his parents arrived at the yard, the old man saw how Scruffy’s eyes lit up at the sight of Bart, knew he couldn’t separate them again. “Scruffy seems to have chosen you” he said with a smile. “I think he’d be happier with you.” Bart couldn’t believe his luck. He hugged the old man, promising to take good care of Scruffy. With Scruffy back in his arms, Bart felt happy again.
