You know that classics like Little Women and To Kill a Mockingbird started as novels. But you probably didn’t know that these other famous movies also came from books.
Hidden Figures
This film told the story of real-life Katherine Johnson and other female African-American math experts who helped drive the United States into space in the 1960s. It was actually based on a 2016 non-fiction book and the movie did promote sales of the book.
Forrest Gump
The 1994 movie which was based on the book by Winston Groom won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for the star Tom Hanks. Although the movie’s critical and box-office success gave the book a huge success, it’s the film that made its mark on pop culture history.
The Girl on the Train
Paula Hawkin’s psychological thriller, about a woman on a train who thinks she sees something strange out of the window, was a huge success. But unlike the fast—paced, can’t-be-put-down quality of the novel, the movie was boring.
Field of Dreams
It’s hard to describe the plot of this movie: Ray Kinsella hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field in his Iowa cornfield, and what happens next explores the themes of lost dreams, childhood heroes, and healing the pain of the past. The 1989 movie is based on W. P. Kinsella’s 1982 original, Shoeless Joe, but cuts out some extra characters.

The 61-year-old potato farmer Cliff Young won the 1983 Westfield Sydney-Melbourne Ultramarathon, which took runners days to finish, in Australia.
When Cliff showed up in the race, he stuck out like a sore thumb in his everyday clothes different from the other professional runners’, quickly attracting the attention of reporters present.
“I grew up on a farm where we couldn’t afford horses. Whenever the storms would roll in, I’d have to go out and round up the sheep,” Cliff told reporters. “Sometimes I’d have to run those sheep for two or three days, but I’d always catch them. I believe I can run this race.” No one actually believed him. Most competitors were in their 20s and early 30s, with years of training and marathon experience.
On the first day of the race, Cliff was left far behind. But he had one advantage that no one had expected. He didn’t plan on stopping until he reached the finish line while all the others had been training to run for 18 hours a day and then stop and sleep for the other six.
When dawn broke, the other runners were shocked to learn that the old farmer was in the lead and that they would have to catch up with him. Although running slowly, he was the first to cross the finish line and received $10,000 as a prize. But he kept none of the prize and donated it to the homeless.
Cliff continued to run. In 1997, he set out to raise funds for homeless kids by running all 16, 000 kilometers of the Australian coastline. In 2000, Cliff achieved a world age record in a six-day race in Victoria. Cliff Young died at 81, but his legend lives on.

The father of an 8-year-old boy says his son is now the youngest person to climb California’ s El Capitan. After four days of guided climbing, Joe Baker and his son Sam reached the top of the cliff (悬崖) face inside Yosemite National Park last week.
“We made it!” Joe said. “What an amazing week! I’m so proud of Sam. He completed the youngest rope climbing of El Capitan! In a few years he might be back breaking more records.”
Rock climbing has been a favorite pastime for the Baker family. Though Sam’s mother didn’t join the climbing, she is also a crazy climber. The family set up a website to record Sam’s adventures and collect money to make films that inspire parents to adventure with their kids. Sam began training at least 18 months ago and did well in a test run. They began the climbing on October 25 and reached the top on 28. They made the journey with the help of two guides.
But their achievement has also been challenged. As the climbing made headlines around the world, some members of the Yosemite climbing community began to say publicly that what the pair had done was not actually called climbing. The Bakers used a technique known as “jugging” which needs using handheld devices to slide up a fixed rope that’s been placed by a guide, without touching the rock face.
Reaching the top can not be so simple. The climbing takes many days, which means carrying up all necessary food, water and other heavy equipment. It also involves setting up and sleeping on a small platform that’s suspended (悬) thousands of feet in the air. The rock face is very exposed, a term (术语) used to describe a place that’s steep (陡峭的) and unprotected.
28. What do we know about Sam from the first two paragraphs
A. He is the best climber in California.
B. He has been trained by his father.
C. He is the youngest climber reaching the top of El Capitan.
D. He is planning another mountain climbing with his father.
29. Why did the Bakers found a website
A. To record their happy life.
B. To encourage families to experience adventures.
C. To show off Sam’s climbing experience.
D. To advise parents to climb El Capitan with their kids.
30. What’s some members’ attitude to the achievement of Joe and Sam in paragraph 4
A. Supportive. B. Impressive. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
31. What can we learn about the climbing from the last paragraph
A. It is challenging and fun. B. It needs some courage.
C. It requires high-tech equipment. D. It affects most climbers’ sleep.
D
People hate mosquitoes due to their blood-sucking tendencies. Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been researching ways to keep them away. A team of researchers from Virginia Tech in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors attract mosquitoes.
After analyzing the mosquitoes’ behavior, the researchers discovered several chemicals in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”. Two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and the other with the scent (气味) of flowers, can keep the insects away.
The team also found that what matters to mosquitoes is not just the chemicals, but rather the combination of chemicals with each person’s smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive to them after using one type of soap. They can also repel (驱除) mosquitoes by using another kind of soap. The findings were “remarkable”, said senior author Clement Vinauger in a news release, adding that he would choose a coconut-scented soap to keep mosquitoes away.
How these insects manage to find humans has also made scientists curious. According to a new study published in Current Biology, researchers built a “canteen” for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads that had the smell of different humans. The pads were heated to imitate sleeping humans. They found that the insects can track scents up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic acid, which is usually produced by bacteria on human skin. The smell of one participant wasn’t attractive to the insects, and researchers believed it was due to the person’s diet, which is a mainly plant-based food.
By analyzing the chemicals that either attract or repel mosquitoes, scientists are able to improve mosquito repellent (驱蚊剂) With more studies, scientists believe changing a person’s diet could one day make them “mosquito-proof”. This is especially beneficial for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria, CNN reported.
32.What did the researchers from Virginia Tech try to find out
A.What soap scents can help avoid mosquitoes.
B.How many soap flavors attract mosquitoes.
C.Why mosquitoes prefer certain soap flavors.
D.What kind of people attracts mosquitoes most.
33.How did researchers study mosquitoes’ ability to track humans
A.By making volunteers fall asleep.
B.By heating pads with human scents.
C.By watching mosquitoes in the natural world.
D.By building a canteen shared with mosquitoes.
34.Which of the following may attract mosquitoes most
A.The scent of flowers. B.Combination of different smells.
C.A person with a plant-based diet. D.Carboxylic acid
35.What is the best title of the passage
A.How to Kill Mosquitoes B.What Kind of Soap Is Most Useful
C.Using Soap Is of Great Significance D.Soap Science Beats away Mosquitoes Bites

Keeping animals safe on the road
Roadkill is not a rare sight when driving down most highways and sometimes also on roadways in cities. 36 .
37 . A recent study has measured, for the first time, the damage that can be caused to animals in urban areas on China’s fast-developing road network. Li Zhongqiu and his team from Nanjing University’s School of Life looked at the problem in cities, where roadkill could have an even larger impact.
They chose Nanjing as the study subject, where there are more than 9,700 kilometers of paved roads. A total of nine roads were chosen for the research, including three national highways. 38 . The researchers then monitored the roads every two weeks over a year. The team recorded a total of 293 individual roadkill cases. Birds made up nearly half the total, making them the most susceptible(易受影响的) group to roadkill. 39 . “This may be due to the large number of stray(流浪的) cats and dogs in urban areas,” Li said. “Abandoned pets are more likely to wander into traffic.” Also, there are a large number of black birds in East China, and they can be attracted by flies or other insects, leading to further accidents. 40 . This may be due to the fact that some warm-blooded animals have to go out and search for food during these times when food is hard to find. “Roadkill has resulted in the decline(下降) of urban animal populations and must be taken seriously,” Li said. The researchers also call on policymakers to put forward related traffic rules and animal protection rules, such as speed limits and traffic controls.
A.You may not feel good about seeing roadkill
B.The object is to educate people about road safety
C.The length of the roads combined was over 224.27 kilometers
D.Roadkill incidents are more likely to happen in November and January
E.Cats, dogs and blackbirds were the three commonly killed animals
F.In the past, research in China focused on roadkill in nature reserves
G.It refers to animals being hit by cars or other vehicles by accident.

It was a busy day for 20 year old Justin. His hot dog stand (货摊) in the park was crowded with customers. Suddenly, an old woman asked how much a hot dog was. “It depends on what you want, ma’ am. They cost from $3 to $7,” he replied.
“I was just curious about that. I don’t want any,” she said before walking away. Justin noticed she sat alone on a chair across from his stand. She kept looking in his direction, and he realized the old woman wanted a hot dog but couldn’t afford one. So he quickly made one and brought it to her. “I forgot to tell you that you’re our 50th customer of the day, so you can get a free hot dog!” he said smilingly.
“Oh, is that so ” the old lady asked. “Thank you. I’m Emily.” She tasted it and was shocked at how delicious it was. “It’s different from traditional hot dogs,” she said with joy. Justin replied, “I love cooking, so I keep trying different things with my food. I’m glad you like it! Have a wonderful day.” Then he hurried away.
The next day, when Emily returned to the park, Justin treated her to a hot dog again. Emily refused because she didn’t have money, but he insisted (坚持). “I am so happy that someone is trying my food, Emily. Your opinion matters to me,” Justin said. Though Emily was thankful for his offer, she told Justin it wasn’t necessary. But he kept doing that every day. Later when they chatted, Emily learned that Justin dreamed of expanding (扩大) his business and opening a cafe.
One day, Emily said to Justin, “I kept a count of the hot dogs you brought me, and you’ve already spent $ 100 on me. Now it’s my turn to help you, boy. Come with me.” Emily led Justin to an old building that looked like a deserted cafe. She explained that her husband owned it. After her husband died, Emily was in poor health and there was nobody to look after the cafe, so it closed down.

书面表达
The Great Wall
I’m honored to introduce one of China’s famous heritage sites, the Great wall, whose splendor has impressed me greatly.
Built in the Qin Dynasty, the Great Wall experienced construction and expansion across several dynasties. Unfortunately, with increasing tourists emerging on the Great Wall, it is gradually wearing down. To preserve it, the government has taken effective measures to ban the Great Wall from being ruined.
With close cooperation among Chinese people, it has taken on a new look. I’d like to invite all the foreigners to visit it one day, appreciating ancient Chinese people’s incredible wisdom.
读后续写
“It’s now yours, Justin. This is your cafe,” Emily said. Justin looked at her with doubt. “My cafe What do you mean ” he asked. “This house carries many beautiful memories, so I don’t want to sell it. I feel lucky to have met you. You are a kind kid and you deserve it,” Emily replied smilingly. She believed Justin would make good use of the house. Justin had tears in his eyes when he understood Emily’s words. He thanked Emily repeatedly for making his dream come true.
Over the next few weeks, Justin worked tirelessly to fix up the old cafe. Then he added his hot dogs to the menu and also used his creativity to experiment with other dishes. Business was slow in the beginning, but finally, word spread about the cafe. A lot of customers who used to love the cafe started showing up every day. They were moved by the story of Emily and Justin. Emily was also proud of what Justin had achieved. Gradually, the cafe became a symbol of hope and kindness in the community.

M:Well, how about, for the time being, planning on dropping her off at your place on my way to work But if there is a snowstorm, I'll give you a call and see if we can figure something else out.
W:Sounds good. We can touch again on Friday night when we have a better idea of the forecast.
M:I hope this works out.
(Text 10)
W:Imagine a world with no more wild animals—no elephants, no giraffes or lions. To me, it is such a terrible thought for the world. Being surrounded by wild animals, feeding them and caring for them, is all that I've wanted to do with my life. And that is exactly whatI am doing now. I care for 500 animals that live on my family's wildlife farm in San Antonio,Texas. I wear many hats for doing many different jobs there every day. I care for creatures from around the world. I love them all. However, the giraffes occupy a special place in my heart. The population in the last 15 years has declined by 80 percent. Buddy and Wasswa are one of just nine sets of twin giraffes born at zoos around the world. After getting some media attention, I launched the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to help protect giraffes living in the wild. I'm so glad to get help from five wildlife researchers that took giraffes' protection up to a higher level. Our farm is open to the public. Visitors can not only learn about the animals, but also get close to them. And the animals are not against that. For them, people are part of their natural environment.丰城中学2024-2025学年下学期高一段考英语答题卡
