By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art centre, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi-page application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin. With the support of his parents, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin regards him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.
As Nalin was busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
4. What do we know about Nalin Kamat from the first two paragraphs
A. He became a working artist when aged 13.
B. He drew other teenagers’ growth in his work.
C. He showed his series at the capital art centre.
D. He was disqualified for a juried exhibition.
5. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery
A. To form the connection between different galleries.
B. To promote artists by showcasing their work.
C. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
D. To expand his own business through themed shows.
6. Which of the following can best describe Nalin’s idea of opening the gallery
A. Short-lived. B. Pioneering.
C. Unpromising. D. Popular.
7. What kind of person is Nalin Kamat according to the text
A. Devoted and creative. B. Helpful and cautious.
C. Knowledgeable and ambitious. D. Humorous and intelligent.
C
Health is not just about exercise and eating more fruits and vegetables. Keeping proper posture is vital for living a healthy life and avoiding negative health problems.
Good posture doesn’t mean your back must be completely straight — no matter how many times you heard warnings to “sit up straight” or “stand straight” in your youth. Actually, the spine has a natural curve (弯曲). This allows the head to be centred over the neck and the body to be centred over the hips, which is their ideal placement for maintaining good posture.
Keeping proper posture provides plenty of physical benefits including reducing the chance of getting sports injuries, digestive problems, muscle and stress injuries. It minimizes the amount of stress on all your muscles.
Correct posture can improve breathing as well. The inefficient breathing patterns are associated with a slouched (懒散的) posture, in part because such a position forces the body to rely more on upper-chest breathing. By contrast, the belly (腹部) breathing is more efficient and relaxing. This is important because many of the worst health problems of poor posture can take years before they become noticeable.
Along with such physical advantages, proper posture can also improve your mental health and your life. “A person with neutral head-level posture is considered as more cooperative than someone who has their head in an up-or-down position,” says Laura Deon, a physical medicine specialist at RUSH University in Chicago. “Good posture can improve communication skills and make your everyday exchanges go smoothly,” she explains.
To experience benefits related to proper posture, it is recommended to pay attention to how you sit and stand and to practise doing so correctly and often enough until it feels natural. Besides, wearing proper footwear, doing exercise and sitting on chairs that offer back support could be helpful too. No matter which of these techniques you follow, good posture can be trained with practice.
8. What do we know about our back
A. It keeps still all the time. B. It has a natural curve.
C. It looks quite bent from the side. D. It needs to be totally straight.
9. Which of the following is NOT a benefit from proper posture
A. Strengthen one's memory. B. Improve mental health.
C. Reduce digestive problems. D. Relieve muscle injuries.
10. According to Laura Deon, how can good posture affect social interactions
A. It makes you less focused. B. It makes you look taller.
C. It makes you seem more cooperative. D. It makes you seem humorous.
11. What does the author suggest readers do to keep proper posture
A. Choose soft chairs to sit. B. Wear hard sneakers.
C. Keep posture natural with practice. D. Sit on chairs all day.
D
Your favourite foods might not taste the same in the future, and the climate crisis is behind it.
In Spain, the black Iberian pigs, which are very important for making special ham, usually eat acorns (橡子) and surrounding grass under oak trees. However, because of heatwaves and a five-year drought, these natural foods are becoming less. So, the pigs are now fed olives (橄榄), thereby changing the unique flavour of the ham.
Drought also affects how fruits taste. For example, watermelons and cantaloupes (香瓜) taste different when there’s a drought. Researchers from a Spanish tech centre told a Spanish newspaper that sugars and other compounds build up during droughts, changing the taste of food, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
Beyond drought, rising temperatures and sea levels also influence food flavours. Typically, warm days and cool nights improve the sugar and acid content in fruits, which are essential for the optimal flavour. However, global warming makes this hard to achieve. For example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and drier due to early blooming and high temperatures during growth.
While the food we eat is deeply influenced by the climate crisis our food choices also cause it. Eating meat and dairy from cows has a big impact on the climate. Raising livestock (牲畜) produces a lot of greenhouse gases. Making animal protein also needs more land, energy and water than making plant-based protein.
This may seem like a problem that can’t be solved, but we can break this cycle. The Good Food Institute, a US group, believes people will choose alternative protein if they are as tasty and affordable as meat.
Meanwhile, more people have started to take action. According to The New York Times, Will Hlamris, a US farmer, practises regenerative farming, allowing cows to move around freely, using less chemical use and disturbing the soil less, which is more environmentally friendly.
12. What changes the flavour of the ham
A. The harvest of acorns and the surrounding grass.
B. People’s need to make the flavour special.
C. The shortage of food sources and alternative feed.
D. The unique compounds caused by heatwaves.
13. What does the underlined word “optimal” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Strange. B. Best. C. Worst. D. Common.
14. According to the Good Food Institute, people will choose alternative protein if ______.
A. the environment changes B. they are cheaper than meat
C. they are delicious and cheap enough D. the greenhouse gases disappear
15. What’s the main idea of the text
A Benefits of regenerative farming. B. Food production affected by climate.
C. Livestock’s role in making protein. D. Climate crisis changing food taste.

I burst through the back door. “Mum,” I said. “I’ve been nominated (提名) for the State Junior Honour Society.”
My mother gave my shoulders a squeeze. “I’m so proud of you.” she told me.
Mum and I sat together in the family room as I filled out the honour society application. I had to prove that that I had all the characteristics required in a candidate: scholarship, leadership, service, and citizenship. I wrote what I achieved in my study and my lasting efforts in raising money for the community. I was confident that I would make the school honour society. Based on my characteristics, my mum even said I was well qualified for a New York State Award.
The next day, I turned the paperwork into the advisor and didn’t think any more about it. Months went by, and I received a letter from the school about the honour society. As soon as the bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house.
“Mum,” I said, “I didn’t make the honour society.” She smiled, “Are you joking ” I felt tears in my eyes. “No, really, they didn’ t pick me,” I said and handed her the letter.
“Oh, honey, I’m sorry. I thought you were kidding,” my mother said. “There must be some mistake.” She grabbed the phone and called the honour society advisor. He told her that no mistake was made, but he couldn’t disclose the reason for my non-selection. Nearly all of my friends were chosen for the honour society except me. It was really hard for me.
Mum told me a story about a high school friend of hers. “He was intelligent and warm-hearted, but for some reason he wasn’t chosen for the State Honour Society. He was hurt and angry.” “Do you know what he does for a living now ” she asked. “He is a world-famous doctor, and he saves lives every day. You can make a difference too.”
I understood what my mum was trying to say. Not being a member of the honour society wasn’t going to ruin my good academic performance and my contribution to community.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With her encouragement, I decided to keep doing what I always do and make a difference.

Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Li Hua. I am writing to apply as a volunteer for the Chinese and foreign students’ exchange activity with “tea-culture” as the theme.
During my tenure as a language assistant in an international organization, I was fortunate enough to accumulate valuable experience. Not only did this role develop my confidence in English communication, but it also honed my skills in teamwork and problem-solving. In addition, as an enthusiastic tea lover, I have rich knowledge about tea, from its varieties to brewing methods. This background equips me well to be a highly effective volunteer for this event.
I would be grateful if you give me the opportunity to contribute to this cultural bridge. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【47题答案】
【答案】
With her encouragement I decided to keep doing what I always do and make a difference. I continued volunteering at the local community centre, mentoring younger students, and even started a club at school dedicated to promoting small acts of kindness. I cherished every chance for me to fully immerse myself in my passion for community service and cheered for my personal growth. Through these experiences, I realized that true success isn’t determined by a title. It’s about the impact we have on others’ lives. In the midst of my ongoing journey, an unexpected opportunity presented itself.
One day, I received a letter from the New York State Award Committee. It informed me of being offered a special New York State Award in recognition of my good academic performance and continuous efforts in community service. Receiving the New York State Award was a defining moment for me. It was a reminder that my worth and achievements were not defined by a single society or organization. Seeing my smile, Mum hugged me, whispering, “Your hard work paid off.” At that moment, I truly feel the happiness of making positive impact on others not just for gaining an award.
