【教学过程】
一、开场(Greeting)
T: Good morning, class! How are you all today I hope you are full of energy and ready to learn something new. Before we start, let's have a quick warm - up. I will show you some pictures on the screen, and you need to describe what you see in English as quickly as possible.
二、复习导入(Revision and Lead - in)
T: In the last class, we learned about some quotes related to getting along with others and had a discussion about them. Can anyone recall one of the quotes and briefly explain its meaning
S1: "Don't do to others what you don't want others to do to you." It means we should treat others the way we want to be treated.
T: Very good! That's a very important principle in our daily lives. Now, let's think about the picture we saw in the last class, the one with children playing in the garden. Who can describe the picture again
S2: There were some children playing in a big garden. There was soft, green grass and beautiful flowers, and there was also a wall around the garden.
T: Excellent. And we also talked about some problems we might have in getting along with others, like sharing and misunderstandings. Today, we are going to read a story called "The Selfish Giant" to further understand the theme of getting along.
三、新课讲解(Presentation)
(一)Title and Picture Prediction
T: First, look at the title "The Selfish Giant" and the picture below it on page XX of your textbooks. What can you predict from the title and the picture Discuss with your partner for two minutes.
(Students discuss)
T: Time's up. Let's share your predictions.
S3: I think the story is about a giant who is selfish. Maybe he doesn't let others do something, like the children playing in his garden.
T: That's a great prediction. What else do you think might happen
S4: Maybe the giant will have some changes in the end, because usually in stories, there is a development of characters.
T: Very good. Now, let's read the story to see if your predictions are right.
(二)Skimming
T: Open your textbooks to the passage "The Selfish Giant". I want you to skim through the passage quickly. While skimming, try to find out the main idea of the story and the key events. You have three minutes.
(Students skim the passage)
T: OK, stop here. Who can tell me the main idea of the story in one or two sentences
S5: The story is about a selfish giant who doesn't let children play in his garden, and then there are some changes in the garden and the giant's attitude.
T: Exactly. Can you mention some of the key events
S6: The giant comes back and drives the children away. Then spring doesn't come to his garden, but later, when he sees the children again, he realizes his mistake.
T: Well done. Skimming helps us get a general idea of the passage. Now, let's read it more carefully.
(三)Scanning and Detailed Reading
Paragraph 1
T: Let's start with the first paragraph. Read it aloud together.
(Students read paragraph 1 aloud)
T: In this paragraph, it says "Every afternoon, the children play in the Giant's garden. It is a large and lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stand beautiful flowers like stars, and there are twelve peach - trees that in the springtime broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit." What kind of garden is it
S7: It's a very beautiful and lovely garden with nice grass, flowers and peach - trees.
T: Right. And what do the children do in the garden
S8: They play in the garden every afternoon.
T: Good. Now, look at the description of the garden. Can you find some adjectives used to describe it
S9: Large, lovely, soft, beautiful, delicate.
T: Excellent. These adjectives help us form a vivid picture of the garden in our minds.
Paragraph 2
T: Now, let's move on to the second paragraph. Who wants to read this paragraph aloud
S10: (Reads paragraph 2 aloud)
T: The Giant comes back. What does he do when he sees the children in his garden
S11: He shouts at them in an angry voice.
T: How do you know he is angry
S11: Because the text says "he shouts in a very angry voice".
T: Good. What does the word "shout" mean And can you give me another sentence using "shout"
S12: "Shout" means to speak very loudly. For example, "The man shouted for help when he was in danger."
T: Great. After shouting at the children, what does the Giant do next
S13: He closes the gate and builds a high wall around the garden.
T: Why does he do that
S14: Maybe he is selfish and doesn't want the children to play in his garden.
T: Exactly. The word "selfish" is very important here. What does "selfish" mean
S15: It means caring only about oneself and not about others.
T: Right. The Giant's selfish behavior will lead to some consequences. Let's see what happens next.
Paragraph 3
T: Read the third paragraph silently. Then, tell me what the children do after the Giant drives them away.
S16: They have nowhere to play, so they wander around the high wall.
T: And what do they say
S17: "How happy we were there!"
T: From what they say, what can we infer
S18: They really miss the garden and the time they played there.
T: Good inference. The children's feelings contrast with the Giant's selfish behavior.
Paragraph 4
T: Now, let's look at the fourth paragraph. What season comes, but not in the Giant's garden
S19: Spring comes, but it's still winter in the Giant's garden.
T: Why is it still winter in the Giant's garden Discuss with your group members for one minute.
(Students discuss)
T: Time's up. Who can share your group's opinion
Group 1 representative: Maybe because the Giant is selfish and doesn't let the children in. The children bring joy and life, and without them, the garden remains cold.
T: That's a very good analysis. The lack of children seems to have an impact on the garden's season.
Paragraph 5
T: Read the fifth paragraph. What happens to the trees in the Giant's garden
S20: The trees forget to blossom, and the birds don't sing there.
T: And what does the Giant think
S21: He thinks the weather is still too cold and spring will come soon.
T: But is that the real reason
S22: No, it's because of his selfishness.
T: Right. His wrong understanding shows that he still doesn't realize his mistake.
Paragraph 6
T: In the sixth paragraph, what does the Giant hear one morning
S23: He hears birds singing.
T: How does he feel
S24: He is very happy because he thinks spring has come at last.
T: Right. Then he jumps out of bed and looks outside. What does he see
S25: He sees a hole in the wall and a little child in every tree. And the trees are covered with flowers.
T: What kind of mood does this scene create
S26: It creates a happy and lively mood, very different from the previous cold and lonely state.
T: Good. The change in the scene indicates a change is about to happen.
Paragraph 7
T: Read the seventh paragraph. How does the Giant feel when he sees the little child
S27: He feels ashamed because he realizes he has been selfish.
T: What does he do next
S28: He knocks down the wall.
T: What does the phrase "knock down" mean And can you use it in a sentence
S29: "Knock down" means to make something fall by hitting it. For example, "The workers knocked down the old shed."
T: Great. By knocking down the wall, what does the Giant show
S30: He shows that he has changed and is no longer selfish.
T: Exactly. This is a very important turning point in the story.
Paragraph 8
T: Finally, read the last paragraph. What happens in the end
S31: The children can play in the garden again, and the Giant plays with them every day.
T: What can we learn from the ending of the story
S32: We should be kind and share things with others, not be selfish. Only in this way can we be happy.
T: Very good. The story teaches us a valuable lesson about getting along with others.
(四)Summary of the Story
T: Now, let's summarize the story together. Who can tell the whole story briefly
S33: At first, the children like to play in the Giant's beautiful garden. But the selfish Giant gets angry when he sees them and drives them away. He closes the gate and builds a wall. Then, spring comes to other places, but his garden is still in winter. One day, he hears birds singing and sees a hole in the wall and children in the trees. He realizes he has been selfish and knocks down the wall. Finally, the children can play in the garden again, and the Giant plays with them.
T: Wonderful! You have a very good understanding of the story.
四、知识讲解(Language Points)
(一)Shout
T: We learned the word "shout" in the story. "Shout" is a verb, meaning to speak very loudly. We often use "shout at sb." when we are angry with someone and speak loudly to them. For example, "The coach shouted at the players because they made many mistakes." But when we want to make someone hear us from a distance, we use "shout to sb." For example, "I shouted to my friend across the street to come here." Now, I will give you some sentences. Please choose the correct preposition, "at" or "to".
(Shows sentences on the screen)
The angry mother shouted ____ her son.
The lifeguard shouted ____ the swimmer in danger.
(Students answer)
S34: The first one should be "at", and the second one should be "to".
T: Correct. Well done.
(二)Since
T: Another important word in the story is "since". "Since" can be used as a preposition or a conjunction. When used as a preposition, it means "from a particular time in the past until now". For example, "I have lived in this city since 2010." Here, "since 2010" shows the starting point of the action. When used as a conjunction, it also means "from a particular time in the past until now", and the clause after "since" usually uses the past tense. For example, "I have known him since we were in primary school." Now, let's do some plete the sentences with the correct form of the verb.
(Shows sentences on the screen)
She ____ (be) ill since last Monday.
Since he ____ (come) to this school, he has made great progress.
(Students answer)
S35: The first one should be "has been", and the second one should be "came".
T: Perfect. You've got it.
(三)Nor
T: We also saw the word "nor" in some of the quotes we learned before. "Nor" is a conjunction, and it is often used with "neither" or "not". For example, "He doesn't like sports, nor does he like reading." It means he doesn't like either sports or reading. Now, make a sentence using "nor".
S36: She can't play the piano, nor can she play the guitar.
T: Very good. Your sentence is correct and meaningful.
(四)Be ashamed of
T: In the story, the Giant feels ashamed. We often use the phrase "be ashamed of sth./sb." or "be ashamed to do sth." It means to feel embarrassed or guilty about something or someone. For example, "He was ashamed of his bad behavior." or "She was ashamed to tell her parents the truth." Now, please make a sentence using "be ashamed of".
S37: I was ashamed of myself for forgetting my friend's birthday.
T: Great. It seems you understand this phrase well.
(五)Knock down
T: "Knock down" is a phrasal verb. In the story, it means to make something fall by hitting it, like the Giant knocked down the wall. But "knock" can also have other meanings. For example, "knock on/at the door" means to hit a door with your knuckles to attract attention. Now, I will give you some sentences. Please tell me the meaning of "knock" or "knock down" in each sentence.
(Shows sentences on the screen)
The workers are going to knock down the old building next week.
Please knock on the door before you enter the office.
(Students answer)
S38: In the first sentence, "knock down" means to make the old building fall. In the second sentence, "knock on" means to hit the door with your hand to attract attention.
T: Exactly. You understood it very well.
五、课堂练习(Practice)
T: Now, let's do some exercises to consolidate what we have learned today. Open your workbooks to page XX. First, let's do the vocabulary exercise. Match the words with their meanings.
(Students complete the vocabulary exercise, and the teacher checks the answers)
T: Next, let's do the reading comprehension exercise. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions.
(Students read and answer the questions, and the teacher explains the answers)
T: Well, you all did a good job in the exercises. But remember, practice makes perfect. You need to keep practicing these words and grammar points in your daily study.
