B.In Freshers' Fair.C.In online stores. D.In charity shops.3.What is probably the major concern of the targeted readers A.Taste. B.Security. C.Fashion. D.Price.BDuring my graduate studies, countless workshops taught me one thing: To make it in science, one must design and carry out big projects. As I established my own research lab, a senior colleague encouraged me to try something big. So when I landed an associate professor position, my goal seemed obvious: I should perform big projects. This was the only way to lay a foundation for a successful academic research career. The path, however, would not be as clear as I had pictured. When I contacted famous researchers to suggest cooperating, as is typically required for high profile projects, they frequently replied enthusiastically to start, agreeing my project sounded interesting and promising. But when they learned I had just established my lab, they became skeptical and hesitant, ultimately saying no. And when I sought grant funding, my lack of experience and reputation was cited as a reason to deny support for my ambitious proposals.I spent about two years being stuck in this mindset, excited about my big ideas but making little actual progress, leading to frustration and depression. As I neared my breaking point, I began to ask myself: Were big projects really the only route When I shifted to small projects, I became brave enough to step into fields I was not familiar with. By reading papers in new areas, I found creative ideas to pursue. When I discussed these adventurous, low cost projects with early career researchers, they were glad to cooperate. We secured funding. When I published papers out of these projects, they were not exciting enough to make headlines — but for me, it was a moment of joy and self contentment. It has now been 3 years since I embraced this “small” approach. Sometimes senior colleagues say I'm wasting time with projects that aren't important enough. But I disagree. When I do these studies, I also find clues for future big projects. Going forward, I will still commit part of my time to exploring small projects, which I think can help pursue more fundamental questions.4.What is the author trying to do with big projects A.Pursue his graduate studies.B.Seek a route to academic success.C.Apply for an associate professorship.D.Establish an academic research center.5.What prevented the author pursuing his big project A.Lack of necessary support.B.The toughness of workC.Shortage of academic talents.D.The opposition from colleagues.6.How did the author carry out his small projects A.By publishing influential papers.B.By getting young colleagues' funding.C.By exploring and initiating new ideas.D.By cooperating with senior colleagues.7.What does the author learn from his experience A.Good jobs require a high degree.B.Ambition isn't fit for the young.C.Success results from preparation.D.Small doesn't mean unimportant.CYoung people's career expectations have become more concentrated in fewer occupations over the past two decades though social media and technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) are developing rapidly, according to a report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).Traditional occupations from the 19th and 20th centuries, such as lawyers and police officers, continue to trap the imaginations of young people around the world as they did nearly 20 years ago.The report, based on a latest survey of the 15 year olds in 41 countries, said the career expectations of youngsters may be “antiquated and unrealistic”.Nearly half of young people around the world wish to work in just 10 of the most common professions. The surveys show that too many teenagers are ignoring, or don't know, new types of jobs that are coming up, particularly as a result of digitalisation (数字化).It is a concern that more young people than before appear to be picking their dream jobs from a small list of the most popular, traditional occupations, like teachers, lawyers or business managers. The report found that among boys and girls who perform similarly in science, boys are more likely to expect to work in science and engineering. The top 10 occupations preferred by boys have changed very little since 2000,but girls are now more likely to want to be architects, police officers, and designers rather than hairdressers or writers. The report also found a broader range of career expectations in countries with strong and firm occupational training for teenagers. For example, in Germany teenagers show a much wider range of career interests that better reflect patterns of labour market demands.More than a third of students in the UK report a lack of career advice at schools and colleges.Young people's wishes are set as young as age seven, and do not change enough over time to meet demands.8.What does the underlined word “antiquated”in paragraph 2 probably mean A.Outdated. B.Uncertain.C.Purposeful. D.Demanding.9.How does the author feel about the young's job interests A.Puzzled. B.Surprised.C.Satisfied. D.Worried.10.What measure can widen career interests of the youth A.Strengthening the occupational training for teenagers.B.Offering more new types of occupations with high pay.C.Advertising new types of occupations on social media.D.Enriching the occupational imaginations of young people.11.What is the best title for the text A.New Occupations for Young PeopleB.Young People's Career ExpectationsC.The Occupational Training for TeenagersD.The Different Demands in Labour MarketDWhenever I talk about personality in relation to choosing a career, some people complain like this: Those tests are so stupid. When I was in the sixth grade, I took one of them and it said that I should be a farmer. While I don't think I would be a very good farmer, the results are probably a lot more accurate than I'd like to admit. At the time, it seemed unreasonable — I hated the outdoors and physical activities. Now, I think it might have had some points that fit my personality: I like planning (good for planning how to grow crops), working by myself (for those long days on an agricultural machine), and sometimes working on a team (for harvest time).Watch out for any personality test that claims to be able to tell you what your dream job is by the type of animal you'd like to be, or from your favorite breakfast food as a child. While there are many personality assessments that are accurate, I'd like to say that they are a second step. The best choice is self assessment. Before finding ways to know your work preferences, it's important to make a clear difference between liking a topic and liking the work.I once met a third year marine biology student at a large state school in Ohio.He was placed into the Whale Watch program, where he found out that he became violently seasick on any kind of boat — a big disadvantage for a student who thought he wanted to study whales in the wild. The best match is a career in which the major tasks of the work are the tasks you most enjoy doing and the topic is one of the interests. If that career doesn't exist, my advice would be to take the job where there is a skill match. In this way, you will succeed at the basic tasks of your job and perhaps become interested in it.12.What is some people's opinion on choosing a career through personality tests A.It's possible to lead to career failure.B.It's helpful only in a limited way.C.It's unreasonable.D.It's worth a try.13.What does the author think of the personality test she took when she was young A.She admits it forecasts her present job accurately.B.She thinks it shows some part of her personality.C.She finds it unhelpful for her.D.She has little interest in it.14.What is the best way to know your dream job A.Taking personality tests on your favorite things.B.Doing accurate personality assessments.C.Trying your dream job in practice.D.Finding it out by yourself.15.Why was the marine biology student unsuitable for his job A.He disliked the job.B.He felt sick traveling on a boat.C.He was afraid of marine animals.D.He knew little about his preferences. We all know someone who seems unable to control their spending or make good financial decisions. Shopping once a month was a wonderful family time. Every time I would buy over $200 worth of groceries.A well dressed gentleman stood behind me with three items (商品). He looked up at his watch anxiously, and smiled at me. Obviously he was pressed for time. I felt for the man as he'd be behind me for a good long time.“Why don't you go ahead of me?” I said pulling the cart backwards. “You only have a couple of items.” “Thank you,” he replied appreciatively, stepping ahead of me. My daughter gave him a big smile. “Hello,” she said in her sweetest voice. “Hello,” he replied, with his face lighting up with pleasure. I put his few items ahead of mine to let him check out first.I was just waiting for checkout when I realized my husband hadn't returned my bank card. I hurriedly searched my wallet. My heart dropped. The gentleman in front had paid and was picking up his groceries.“I've forgotten my bank card. Will you take a credit card?” I asked the cashier hopefully. “I'm sorry. We only accept the bank card or money,” the cashier replied. “It will take me an hour to run home and an hour back.” I was discouraged. All my careful planning hadn't helped. The hour and a half of shopping left me tired and I wasn't sure how my daughter would deal with another two hours in the car. Hearing the conversation, the gentleman turned back to us. 根据时间状语“dozens of years ago”及复数主语“Jobs”可知,此处用过去式were。 41.who/that 考查定语从句。 此处应用副词形式修饰动词短语come up with。 fit in with sth. My View on Face scanning PaymentNowadays, face scanning payment is increasingly popular among customers, but it has both advantages and disadvantages. As for its advantages, first, the payment can be completed quickly.Second, customers don't have to carry a mobile phone or a bank card, which makes payment more convenient. When it comes to its disadvantages, the most worrying thing is that face recognition hasn't reached 100% accuracy, which might lead to payment risks.Additionally, customers' personal information may be revealed illegally.I believe, with the improvement of face recognition technology, face scanning payment will definitely become more and more reliable. Hearing the conversation, the gentleman turned back to us. “Don't worry, ma'am,” he said in a comforting tone, a genuine concern reflected in his eyes. “Allow me to take care of your order; it's quite a journey for the little girl.” Then he reached into his wallet, produced two 100 dollar bills, and handed them to the cashier. I was frozen on the spot with a mixture of surprise and appreciation. I asked him for his address and promised to send him a check that night. He just smiled at my little girl and left before I could say “thank you”.Later that night I told the gentleman's kind act to my husband. He was shocked that a complete stranger should trust another with a loan of that amount. “We can't thank him enough,” he said as he held our daughter. Afterwards we shared the story online, expressing our gratitude to him. Determined to follow in his footsteps, we are ready to lend a helping hand whenever possible. From the store trip, we know well small acts of kindness can make a big difference in other people's lives more than we can imagine.
