One day in September 2020, Liu Ailun met two little girls in Laos. They were sitting in a tuk- tuk, a common form of public transportation in Southeastern Asia.
Attracted by their cheerful smiles and bright eyes, the 31- year- old Chinese photographer asked their father, who was the driver, if he could take photos of them. While chatting, Liu learned that the two sisters were of school age, but their family couldn’t afford their school fees. Liu offered to provide financial support for their education and arranged to meet them the next morning, but the father didn’t show up. Determined, Liu managed to locate the family by the end of the day, but they were initially hesitant to trust him. With a local friend vouching for Liu, the family eventually accepted his generosity. Just four days later, the sisters were enrolled in a primary school.
In October 2020, Liu initiated a long- term public welfare project called Hope Vision under his own photography brand — “Hope” is also his daughter’s name. The project cooperates with a center for disabled children called Hands of Hope in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
Each month, Liu gathers a group of volunteers to visit the hearing- impaired children at the center, providing both material support and emotional companionship. They bring items such as stationery, drinks, food, toys, and other necessities. They also spend half the day engaging with the children by playing games, attending classes, or “chatting” with them using sign language.
In fact, Liu and his two children have set up a family project called Pay it Forward. Occasionally, they help one person in need and suggest that this person also help someone else in whatever way they can, ensuring that the kindness continues and doesn’t stop with them.

A. Because of their charming smiles and eyes. B. Because of his concern for their future.
C. Because of their heavy family debts. D. Because of their father’s touching story.

More than 80 percent of China’s public transport buses are new energy vehicles, the Ministry of Transport said on Tuesday.
There were 682,500 public buses on the country’s roads by the end of last year, with554,400 of them — 81.2 percent — eschewing (避开) fossil- fuel engines. The country’s public bus network has expanded to 79,800 routes, with over 20,000 kilometers of dedicated bus lanes. Last year, China’s buses provided 41.6 billion passenger trips, according to Geng Jinjun, an official from the ministry. He said the ministry and related departments have accelerated improvements to regulations, policies and standards in recent years to further the development of urban public transportation.
“Urban public transport is experiencing a new stage of policy opportunities,” Geng said, adding that the ministry is drafting policies to promote its development, as well as detailed rules for the renewal of buses and their batteries.
He said it is important to improve transportation network plans, enhance the integration (整合) of various urban transportation modes, and innovate services tailored to local needs, such as public transport to work, schools and hospitals. The ministry also aims to improve barrier- free services for the elderly.
In Cangzhou, Hebei province, the quality of public transportation, especially public bus services, has improved in recent years, according to Wang Tianyong, deputy director of the transportation bureau. “The province has continuously updated the facilities and equipment, and improved the quality of travel,” he said.
Cangzhou launched a free“medical express bus” to help patients travel to hospital in June last year. The service runs every 30 minutes. Staff are available on board to help passengers complete medical registration through their mobile phones to save time at the hospital. To benefit patients living outside Cangzhou, a large parking lot has been set up at the entrance of a freeway in the city. Patients can park their cars there and ride the free bus to the hospital.
28. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. About 81% of the vehicles are powered by new energy.
B. Some bus lanes are in bad condition.
C. Urban public transport has more regulations.
D. China’s public transport has improved a lot.
29. What can we do to improve public transport according to Geng
A. Put forward more strict rules. B. Provide service needed by the locals.
C. Build new roads to different places. D. Help the elderly to drive freely.
30. What can be inferred from Cangzhou’s practice
A. Travel becomes faster than before. B. Citizens can take free public buses.
C. Patients’ registration is more flexible. D. New vehicles appear in the suburbs.
31. What does the text mainly talk about
A. New energy vehicles in China. B. The turning point of public transport.
C. Good service provided by public transport. D. Developments in China’s public transport.

Savor, a California- based startup backed by legendary businessman Bill Gates, has come up with a method of producing butter- like fat out of just carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
Starting from the idea that all fats are composed of chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms, Savor patented a process to build fat molecules and then produce dairy- free alternatives to products like milk, butter, cheese, and ice cream that have the same texture as the real thing. This process doesn’t release any greenhouse gases, and it uses no farmland and less than a thousandth of the water that traditional agriculture does, so this synthesized fat has a much lower carbon footprint than real animal fat.
So far, taste tests have shown that Savor’s alternative to butter tastes the same as the real thing, but the company still has a lot of challenges to overcome before bringing it to market. “We are currently pre- commercial and working through regulatory approval to be able to sell our butter,” Kathleen Alexander, CEO of Savor, said. “We are not expecting to be able to move forward with any kind of sales until at least 2026.”
In a recent blog post, Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates explained that Savor has a real shot of coming up with a successful butter alternative, because their version “tastes really good —— like the real thing, because chemically it is.”
Gates wrote: “They ultimately developed a process that involves taking carbon dioxide from the air and hydrogen from water, heating them up, and oxidizing them to trigger the separation of fatty acids and then the formulation of fat.”
He also highlighted the importance of animal food alternatives like Savor’s version of butter in reducing our carbon footprint. The livestock industry contributes 14.5 percent of global greenhouse emissions, and with human population on the rise, emissions are also expected to go up, unless we do something about it.
CO and hydrogen- synthesized butter is apparently just the beginning. Savor has plans to make milk, cheese, and ice cream, among others, in the not- so- distant future.
32. Why does Savor’s butter have a lower carbon footprint
A. Because the production process is green. B. Because it demands no farmland and water.
C. Because Savor got a dairy- free patent. D. Because it has a small production output.
33. What can we expect of Savor’s butter
A. It will be accessible to us soon. B. It will be sold at a low price.
C. It will taste indistinguishable from the real one. D. It will take the place of animal butter in the future.
34. Why did Bill Gates emphasize the importance of animal food alternatives
A. Because the livestock industry is too demanding. B. Because the livestock industry is not eco- friendly.
C. Because they can be easily processed. D. Because they meet the needs of more population.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To educate. B. To inform. C. To persuade. D. To advertise.

With a history of over 2,000 years, Jingdezhen is just a small city in the northeast corner of Jiangxi Province. However, 56 is this ancient Chinese town that once gave the country not only centuries of great international influence, but its English name “China”. The word “china” was actually a transliteration (音译) of Changnan, the ancient name of Jingdezhen from where the Europeans imported large amounts of porcelain. 57 (eventual), they took to calling the whole country by this town’s name, China.
Jingdezhen began to produce porcelain as early as the 6th century AD and it 58 (witness) rapid increase in production during the Song Dynasty. Today, while electric devices have been introduced, many 59 (craftsman) there still produce hand- made porcelain by following traditions and well- developed labor 60 (divide), and it usually calls for several artisans to make oversized pieces of porcelain, which 61 (build) in several parts and then glued together.
Aside from the traditional craftsmanship, Jingdezhen has been trying to reactivate some ancient imperial and civil kilns (窑) as part of the city’s efforts 62 (protect) its heritage. For instance, in 2013, the Gour d Kiln, 63 gourd- shaped and wood- fired ceramic kiln 64 (date) back to the Ming Dynasty, was restarted. There are also some other forms, such as the dragon kiln and egg- shaped kiln, 65 are now either under “productive preservation” or put on the city’s protection lists.

Madison Dreams Big
Madison stared through the window and watched a white cloud pass over the woods across from the school. A bird flew across and seemed to pierce the cloud. “So wonderful to be a bird,” she thought. “Just fly across the sky without a care in the world. Total freedom. No math class and my days would be spent on horseback.” She signed deeply and thought of her favorite horse, Star. She couldn’t wait to ride it after school. Somewhere, someone was saying her name, but so far away.
“Madison. Madison!”
Madison jumped, everyone laughing.
“Madison. Could you please join us ” Mrs. Landon said. “I was just asking if you had any problems with the homework yesterday.”
“Oh.” Madison sat straight immediately. “No. I didn’t have any problems.”
“Very well. Class, turn in your assignment. Our visitor will be here soon.”
Madison swallowed hard and raised her hand.
“Yes, Madison. What is it ” “I don’t have my homework,” Madison admitted.
“You said you didn’t have problems with it.”
“Well, I didn’t have any problems doing it, but I forgot to bring it.”
“You should have folded it and put it inside your book.”
“I forgot that too.” The entire class laughed.
“Madison, I don’t know what to do with you. You’ re such a smart girl but you just don’t apply yourself, always daydreaming. Your parents and I are really concerned! Class, clear your desks. Our guest is here.”
Madison looked out again. The bird and the cloud were both gone. She looked at the clock. One more hour to go home.
“Class, welcome Doctor Landon. He’s a vet and came here today as part of our Career Explorations program.”
Madison tried to focus as Doctor Landon talked about how important grades were for future career and how he struggled with math when he was a kid. Madison tried to imagine him as a kid, wondering if he wore glasses then too. She glanced out, trying to remember where she left her riding boots. Doctor Landon was still talking but she totally lost track of it.

Dear Colin,
I’m writing in response to your inquiry about the performance.
Personally, I consider it a wise choice to stage an intriguing play from Journey to the West-- Pig Bajie Carries His Wife on the Back. You may start by working out the lines by referring to the relevant chapters in the original novel or episodes from the TV series, after which characters can be assigned and intense rehearsals arranged under professional guidance. What is worth noting is that costumes and make- up also play an indispensable role in a quality play. So, prepare for that beforehand.
Wish your performance a great success! Any questions, feel free to contact me.
Yours,
Li Hua

Then a word from his speech caught her attention — horse. She immediately sat straight, all ears. Doctor Landon talked about how he hated working in an office all day and specializing in horses gave him the chance to be outside all day, moving from place to place. As the story unfolded further, Madison listened in more and more fascination. It seemed that Doctor Landon had encountered numerous horses, each unique and carrying tons of sweet memories. “What a life that must be!” she thought, a bright light in her eyes and a broad grin on her face. The drifting ship at sea seemed to have found the beacon in the distance.
At that moment, Madison could clearly see her future. She was going to be a vet and tend horses too. Suddenly, life seemed bigger and more important. By the time she got off the bus that afternoon, her plans had changed -- study first and then horse riding, as Doctor Landon said that grades were important if you want to be a vet. From then on, a new Madison was born. Instead of daydreaming in class, she began to apply herself to study, single- minded about her future career, which surprised everyone around and, more importantly, reassured her teachers and parents. An ambitious girl was fighting her way to her big dream, which was all because of that inspiring lesson by Doctor Landon.

W: Johnson, I’ve heard that you have just published a new cookbook called Spanish Cuisine Secrets, a wonderful book with diverse recipes.
M: Yes. It just came out last Tuesday. I have been teaching cooking for 20 years and all my recipes have been inspired by my students.
W: As good ingredients are essential for cooking, our viewers are wondering how we can identify the best ingredients.
M: That’s easy. You just need some life experience. Take fish for example. You can quickly identify the bad fish just by smelling.
W: Let’s go back to teaching. What was it like when you began teaching cooking 20 years ago
M: Actually, very challenging. The students even couldn’t tell different vegetables, so they needed to do that in the first class. Then we learned how to keep different foods fresh and how to use knives.
W: It sounds interesting. Let’s take a commercial break. After the break, we will continue to learn about Johnson’s cooking and teaching career. So join us again to hear what he says.
Text 10
As all of you here today have worked in the hotel industry for some time, you must have experienced the problem of high staff turnover in your hotels. Now I’d like to look at some ways to reduce staff turnover. I’ ll give you some examples. Summer Club once had problems with plaints. Later, they provided a rise in salary. Now, not only have the complaints fallen, but they have also unexpectedly noticed a significant increase in the amount customers spend during their stay. You see, keeping staff satisfied benefits the business. At Sunshine Hotel, the staff have a two- week paid vacation annually. The staff in Oriental Hotel once said managers didn’t value their opinions. Now the situation has changed. All the staff are invited on a regular basis to meetings where their ideas are shared and taken into account. Well, I hope these examples can be useful to you as a hotel manager. Bear in mind that the staff are essential part of the hotel where everyone should be valued.
