The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. More than 2,000 years ago, ancient Chinese people created this overall framework to mark the annual passage of time based on observations of the surfs motion. In the international meteorological field (国际气象界), the 24 solar terms are honored as “the fifth great invention of China”.
The 24 solar terms begins with Start of Spring, followed by Rain Water, Insects Awaken... and ends up with Minor Cold and Major Cold. Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice are two days of the year with the longest and shortest amount of daylight respectively, while Spring Equinox and Autumn Equinox are days with the most balanced amount of daytime and nighttime. Through these four parts, a year is divided into four parts: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
In ancient times this system not only guided agricultural production, instructing farmers to expect the changes in temperature, spring planting and autumn harvest, but also directed Chinese folk customs. For example, Winter Solstice was the first one set among 24 terms and later developed into a festival to worship Heaven and ancestors. Every year at Winter Solstice, emperors of Ming and Qing dynasties would go to the temple of Heaven to hold a ceremony to worship Heaven, for good weather for their crops, and peace and prosperity for the country.
Nowadays, the 24 solar terms could not only be applied to farming, but also guide Chinese everyday life. They remind people to adapt to the changes in the seasons through suitable food and cultural rituals (文化仪式). Seasonal customs are still the rage, such as eating spring pancakes at Start of Spring, sweeping ancestors’ tombs at Qing Ming, gaining weight to keep warm at Start of Autumn and eating nutritious food to store energy at Start of Winter. They have actually became indispensable rituals in Chinese life.
The 24 solar terms is a common cognitive system among Chinese. It reflects the emotional bond, the wisdom and creativity of Chinese, who respect and live in harmony with nature.
8. How were the 24 solar terms created in ancient China
A. They were set based on the movements of the sun.
B. They were created according to the change of the weather.
C. They were the results of learning from each other.
D. They were gradually developed from the practical experience.
9. What is a common feature of Spring Equinox and Autumn Equinox
A. They were set only for guiding agricultural activities.
B. They both play the role in dividing a day into day and night.
C. They are the days on which the length of a day is longer than night.
D. They both have the same amount of day and night time.
10. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Change. B. Fashion.
C. Appreciation. D. Honor.
11. What’s the text mainly about
A. The reasons for the recognition of the 24 solar terms.
B. The ways to handle the relationship between human and nature.
C. The origin and influence of the 24 solar terms in China.
D. The traditions and customs of the 24 solar terms in ancient China.

In the vast and diverse world of nature, animals have evolved unique adaptations that have inspired human innovation and technology. One such example is the gecko, a small lizard known for its remarkable ability to climb smooth surfaces. Geckos have specialized toe pads covered with microscopic hairs called setae, which allow them to adhere(粘附)to surfaces. This natural adhesive mechanism has inspired the development of gecko-inspired adhesives that can be used in various applications, from medical bandages to industrial equipment.
Another fascinating example is the lotus leaf, which exhibits a unique water-repellent property known as superhydrophobicity. The surface of the lotus leaf is covered with tiny wax crystals(蜡晶体)that create a barrier, preventing water from sticking. This natural phenomenon has led to the creation of self-cleaning materials and coatings that can repel dirt and water, reducing the need for cleaning and maintenance.
Birds have also provided inspiration for human innovation, particularly in the field of aviation. The aerodynamic shape of a bird’s wing has been studied extensively to improve the design of aircraft wings. By mimicking the shape and movement of bird wings, engineers have been able to create more efficient and maneuverable aircraft.
Finally, the structure of spider silk has inspired the development of strong and flexible materials. Spider silk is one of the strongest natural materials known, with a tensile strength greater than steel. Scientists have been working to replicate the properties of spider silk to create advanced materials for use in medicine, construction, and other industries.
12. What is the primary inspiration for the development of gecko-inspired adhesives

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dog, Jethro, was always gentle and polite. From the moment we welcomed him into our home till his final day, two things were clear: Jethro and I had a special connection, and he had extreme kindness and sympathy. Jethro never chased or scared little creatures. He just loved hanging out and observing the world around him. He was my perfect field assistant as I conducted research on various birds near my house.
One day while I was sitting inside, I heard Jethro approach the front door from the outside. Unlike his usual gentle barking(吠)when he wanted to come in, he just sat there. Looking out, I noticed a small furry object in his mouth. My first thought was that he had killed a bird. However, when I opened the door, Jethro gently placed a baby rabbit, still alive, at my feet. I looked at the little rabbit and noticed she wasn’t injured, but I sensed she needed warmth, food and care. I guessed that the rabbit’s mother might have been killed by a fox around my house.
Jethro looked up at me, wide-eyed, seemingly seeking praise. I did. He seemed so proud of himself. But as I picked up the rabbit, Jethro’s pride turned to concern. He tried to take her away from my hands but failed. Anxiously, he followed me around as I gathered a box, a blanket, some water and food. I carefully placed the rabbit in the box, named her Bunny and wrapped her in the blanket. I put some carrots near her, and she tried to eat. The whole time, Jethro was standing behind me, watching my every move. I thought he might go for Bunny or the food, but he simply stood there, attracted by the little ball of fur slowly exploring her new home.
When I was going to leave the box, I called Jethro but he didn’t move. Normally, he would come to me instantly, but that day, he remained near the box. Hours passed, and nothing could take him away from his spot near Bunny. Eventually, I had to drag Jethro away for his night walk.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When we returned, Jethro went straight up to the box.

【答案】Dear Sir/Madam,
I am more than delighted to know that some volunteers of our school English association are needed. I’m interested in this position and I am writing to apply for this position.
Owing to studying in the English department, I can talk in English fluently. In addition, I have ever served as a receptionist in our school’s 30th anniversary celebration, making myself more competitive and qualified for this position. In order to practice my speaking skills and gain more experience, I’m eager to be taken on for this job.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】When we returned, Jethro went straight up to the box. He sniffed around it gently, then laid down beside it, keeping a watchful eye on Bunny. Over the next few days, Jethro became Bunny's self - appointed protector. He didn't leave her side much, always making sure she was safe. As Bunny grew stronger, Jethro would wag his tail happily whenever she moved around in the box. It was amazing to see this big dog being so gentle and caring towards the tiny rabbit.
Jethro and I walked to the nearby woods and released Bunny. Jethro seemed to understand what was happening. He watched as Bunny hopped into the underbrush, disappearing from sight. He let out a soft whine, but there was also a sense of contentment. On the way back home, Jethro walked close to me, and I could tell that this experience had deepened our bond. He had shown his kind heart not only to me but also to a helpless little rabbit, and I was more proud of him than ever.
