Jon Fosse, a Norwegian novelist, poet and playwright, has found a growing audience in the English-speaking world for his novels with themes of aging, death, love and art. In 2023, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his innovative (创新的) plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable.
Fosse has published around 40 plays, novels, poetry, and children’s books, and his works have been translated into about 50 languages. One of his works, Septology, tells the story of two old artists who may be the same person—one is successful, the other struggles with an alcohol problem. Given its exploration of identity, Fosse was asked what he aimed to convey to readers in his work. “I hope they can find a kind of peace in, or from, my writing,” he said. He hoped to pass on a feeling of serenity.
Fosse was born in 1959 in Norway, and grew up on a small farm. He began writing poems at 12 and it helped him create a space where he felt safe. He writes in Nynorsk, a less common form of Norwegian, which he says is simply the language of his childhood. Critics (评论家) compare his style to Nobel winners Beckett and Pinter, noting how Norway’s natural environment shapes his stories.
Although he had been seen as a favorite for the Nobel for many years, Fosse said he was “both really happy and really surprised” to receive the award. “I have been among the favorites for 10 years, and felt sure that I would never get the prize,” he said. “I simply cannot believe it.”

You’ve probably heard of Slow Food, but now there’s a new addition to the global “Slow Movement”: Slow TV. But what’s it all about Journalist Carlo Petrini started the Slow Food movement in Rome in 1986. It was a form to protest against the plan to open a McDonald’s restaurant at the Spanish Steps, a famous tourist place in the city.
The objective of the Slow Food movement is to promote the use of fresh, local food that’s grown with sustainable (可持续性的) farming techniques, and that you can enjoy in the company of friends and family. The movement has over 83,000 members in 50 countries, which are organised into 800 friendly groups.
Slow Food soon became part of a more general Slow Movement. In his book In Praise of Slowness, Carl Honoré wrote, “The Slow Movement is challenging the idea that faster is always better. The Slow philosophy is not about doing everything at a snail’s pace. It’s about seeking to do everything at the right speed. It’s about quality over quantity in everything from work to food to parenting.”
The movement covers lots of areas, including Slow Travel, Slow Gardening, Slow Work and Slow Education. Now, there’s a new one, Slow TV. Norway’s NRK broadcasts a TV programme on wood burning that lasts for 12 hours! The show features specialists who give advice on how to collect and burn wood. Other Slow TV shows from Norway include more than 8 hours of painting, 18 hours of fish laying eggs and 130 hours of a ship sailing up the Norwegian coast.
8. Why was the Slow Food movement started in 1986
A. To advertise fast food. B. To be against McDonald’s at a site.
C. To develop local tourism. D. To expand international business.
9. What is the core idea of the Slow Movement
A. The more, the better. B. Value speed more than quality.
C. The sooner, the better. D. Do everything at the right pace.

A recent study led by Professor Shintaro Sato from Waseda University, Japan, suggests that watching sports can significantly improve well-being (幸福). The researchers combined large-scale data analysis, online surveys, and neuroimaging techniques to explore the effects of sports viewing on mental health.
In the first part of the study, the team analyzed data from 20,000 Japanese residents. They found that regular sports viewers consistently (持续地) reported higher well-being compared to non-viewers. However, this part of the study couldn’t explain how sports viewing directly impacts well-being. To explore further, the researchers conducted an online survey with 208 participants. They found that watching popular sports, like baseball, led to greater increases in well-being than less popular ones, such as golf.
The most groundbreaking findings came from the neuroimaging study. Using MRI scans, the team monitored the brain activity of 14 participants while they watched sports videos. They discovered that sports viewing started the brain’s reward system, linked to feelings of pleasure and happiness. Moreover, individuals who regularly watched sports had greater gray matter volume in these brain regions, suggesting that consistent viewing could lead to structural brain changes over time.
The study highlights both short-term and long-term benefits of watching sports. In the short term, it boosts (提升、促进) mood and happiness, while regular viewing may strengthen the brain’s reward system, promoting long-term emotional well-being.
The researchers stress that people can watch widely enjoyed sports, such as baseball or soccer, to improve mental health. They also think this study gives ideas for public health policies, suggesting that promoting sports viewing could be a tool to support well-being on a larger scale.
12. What method was used in the first stage of the research
A. Online surveys. B. Neuroimaging study.
C. Data analysis. D. Face-to-face interviews.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. Research process. B. Key findings.
C. Research significance. D. Initial findings.
14. What is the function of the last paragraph
A. To provide practical suggestions. B. To introduce benefits of playing sports.
C. To question previous study results. D. To summarize findings of earlier research.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Watching Sports: A Boost for Well-being B. Sports Fans: A Study on Their Lifestyle
C. Creative Ways to Improve Physical Fitness D. Strong Urge to Build Better Health Policies

When most of us get a text from an unknown number, we’d probably ignore it without a second thought. But on that quiet March evening, Dennis Williams was sitting at his kitchen table, enjoying a cup of coffee, when the screen of his phone lit up with a message from a stranger named Teresa: “They’re at the hospital! Lindsey’s ready to give e soon!” Confused, Dennis replied, “Congratulations! But I think someone was mistaken.”
But the texts kept coming. As the baby was born, Teresa, the overjoyed grandmother, shared photos and updates — unaware she was messaging a stranger. She sent photos of the baby’s tiny fingers, updates on Lindsey’s recovery, even a photo of the hospital room decorated with blue balloons. As Dennis scrolled through them, he found himself smiling at the stranger’s happiness. Dennis could sense the family’s excitement. “Maybe I should send a gift,” he thought. The idea hit him suddenly. His friends, when he mentioned it, laughed. “You don’t even know them.” But Dennis couldn’t shake the image of that tiny baby in the photos, or Teresa’s thrilled texts. “Every new life deserves a little celebration,” he insisted.

【答案】
Two days later, Dennis showed up at the hospital. He carried a beautifully wrapped gift box and a bouquet of fresh flowers. Walking into the hospital room, he smiled warmly at Lindsey, who was resting on the bed, the newborn baby sleeping peacefully beside her. Dennis introduced himself and explained how he had received Teresa’s texts by mistake. Then he handed over the gift and flowers, saying, “I just wanted to celebrate this wonderful new life with you.” Lindsey and Teresa were touched by Dennis’s kindness and generosity, and the room was filled with laughter and gratitude.
Teresa, realizing her mistake, was both embarrassed and grateful. She apologized to Dennis for bombarding him with texts and photos, but also thanked him sincerely for his thoughtful gesture. “You’ve brought so much joy to our family,” Teresa said, her eyes shining with tears. Dennis smiled and said, “It’s my pleasure. Seeing your happiness has made my day too.” From that day on, Dennis and the family kept in touch, and their unexpected encounter turned into a beautiful friendship that would last a lifetime.马鞍山市2024~2025学年第二学期期末教学质量监测高一英语试题
