Besides getting out into nature yourself, the next best thing—especially in the cold, dark winter—is to take it all in through the pages of a book. But where to start Check out our natural history book recommendations from China and beyond below!
My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir, US/UK
In the summer of 1869, John Muir, joined a group of shepherds in the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada mountain. During the months, he kept a diary while following a flock of sheep, painting a glorious picture of idyllic forests and majestic mountain peaks. His rich perspective and enthusiasm inspired thousands of Americans to visit the area, which later became the famous Yosemite National Park.
Living as a Naturalist by Liu Huajie, China
Natural history might seem to tackle from a theoretical perspective, but Living as a Naturalist makes it accessible and attractive. Liu uses flowers and plants as an entry point and gives readers practical examples of how we can engage with natural history in our daily lives. With a humorous and engaging writing style, not only does the book interpret ancient Chinese educational and philosophical ideas, but it also introduces key figures in the West’s approach to the subject.
The Peregrine by J.A.Baker, UK
In 1965, John A.Baker gave up his work and lived on his earnings, devoting all his time to his “obsession”—the peregrine falcon. Like the bird itself, Baker has a keen eye for detail, and his book is “full of the drama of the everyday”, especially their most exciting moments, like fast flying and hunting prey. He pours his heart and soul into his descriptions, transforming his narrative into poetry. In doing so, he entices (吸引) the reader to become fascinated by the smallest of details in things like bird flight and cloud formation.
21.Whose book eventually helped establish a national park
A. Yosemite’s. B. John Muir’s. C. Liu Huajie’s. D. J.A.Baker’s.

A new study finds that less than seven percent of the adult population in the US have what health experts consider good cardiometabolic (心脏代谢) health.
Using information on roughly 55, 000 people over the age of 20, the results show just 6. 8 percent of American adults reached optimal (最佳的) levels of health in 2018. Moreover, the study found American health has been in sharp decline over the last 20 years. In 1999, one in three adults had a healthy weight. By 2018, that number fell to just one in four Americans. At the same time, three in five people were free of diabetes in 1999. By 2018, however, more than six in ten adults had the condition!
“These numbers are striking. It’s deeply problematic that in the United States, fewer than 1 in 15 adults have optimal cardiometabolic health,” says Meghan O’Hearn, one of the researchers from Tufts University. “We need an overhaul (革新) of our healthcare system, food system, and living conditions, because this is a crisis for everyone. ”
Instead of just looking for signs of disease, the team focused their study on the signs of good, moderate, and poor cardiometabolic health. “Disease is not the only problem, ” O’Hearn explains. “We don’t just want to be free of disease. We want to achieve optimal health and well-being. ”
Researchers also found large health gaps between US adults of different genders, ages, and education levels. Specifically, the study found Americans with less education were half as likely to be in peak cardiometabolic health.
O’Hearn adds, “Identifying these individuals and addressing their health conditions and lifestyle early is critical to reducing growing healthcare burdens. Its impacts on national healthcare spending and the financial health of the entire economy are enormous. And these conditions are largely preventable. We have the public health and clinical interventions and policies to be able to address these problems. ”
24.What percentage of American adults had optimal cardiometabolic health in 2018
A. Over 7 percent. B. Just 6. 8 percent.
C. Around 33 percent. D. About 60 percent.
25.What does O’Hearn think of the results of the study
A. They’re unreal. B. They’re acceptable.
C. They’re expected. D. They’re shocking.
26.What is the purpose of the team’s research
A. To find the big age gap. B. To help people keep fit.
C. To develop new drugs. D. To earn lots of profits.
27.What can we infer from O’Hearn’s words in the last paragraph
A. Joint effort is needed to improve public health. B. Economic growth affects personal health condition.
C. America saw a slow decrease in healthcare costs. D. Rich people tend to suffer from health problems.

Booking your next vacation to space with out-of-this-world views could soon be a reality. Orbital Assembly Corporation announced two new station concepts designed with space tourism accommodations. One of the stations, called Pioneer, could orbit Earth as early as 2025.
The Gateway Foundation circulated ideas for a space hotel in 2019. The goal of the stations is to run a space business park that can serve as a home away from home with room for offices and tourists. Orbital Assembly was founded by the Gateway Foundation team as a way to help make these dreams come true.
The proposed Pioneer station can accommodate 28 people. The second station, Voyager, scheduled to open in 2027, can hold up to 50 people. “The goal has always been to make it possible for large numbers of people to live, work and thrive in space,“ says Orbital Assembly’s COO Tim Alatorre.
Both stations look like a wheel and will feature artificial gravity that allows guests to move comfortably on each station. Pioneer features five modules built around the rotating “Gravity Ring” architecture design. Tourists may still feel some weightlessness but will also be able to drink out of a cup and won’t have to be tied to a bed to sleep. The gravity works similar to how a spinning bucket pushes the water out to the sides of the bucket and stays in place, Alatorre explains. Near the middle of the station, there will be no artificial gravity, but gravity gradually increases further away from the center.
While the Pioneer station will be smaller than Voyager, guests can still shower, eat and drink sitting down in areas with gravity. Each station is furnished like luxury hotels on Earth. Voyager will feature a restaurant and suites with views of Earth.
A significant barrier to space travel is the cost. However, Orbital Assembly expects tourists to seek a trek into space as space travel eventually becomes less expensive. “We envision our Pioneer and Voyager space stations as the ultimate ecotourism destinations. Once people get to space, it will change their perspective about Earth,” Alatorre says. “Space travel is still at its early stage, and we’re excited to do our part to push it forward to help improve life on Earth. ”
28.What is the goal of the Pioneer and Voyager space stations
A. To revolutionize space travel. B. To serve as luxury hotels in space.
C. To offer a unique and immersive experience. D. To enable large scale living and working in space.
29.What do the Pioneer and Voyager stations have in common
A. Open time. B. Artificial gravity.
C. Suites with views. D. Passenger capacity.
30.What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. The “Gravity Ring” rotates around the station. B. The gravity is weak in the central point of the station.
C. The “Gravity Ring” on Pioneer is identical with that on Voyager. D. The gravity operates like a spinning bucket keeping water inside.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Overcoming the Barrier: Space Tourism Becomes Affordable B. Space Hotels on the Horizon: Pioneer and Voyager Stations
C. The Future of Space Travel: Pioneer and Voyager Stations D. Orbital Assembly: Space Tourism Dream Comes True

Rain or shine, Tsering Chopa treks for long hours to deliver mail. For 18 years, the Tibetan mailman has been a vital link between the remote town and the rest of the world.
At 5,373 meters above sea level, Pumachangthang in Nakarze county of the Tibet autonomous region is China’s highest township. The oxygen level is less than 40 percent, the annual average temperature -7°C and the average life expectancy only 49.5 years. The area of the township is about 1,500 square kilometers. The distance from the county town is some 70 km and a single trip to all the six villages can be as long as 160 km.
In 2005, Tsering Chopa became the first mailman of his hometown. In nearly two decades since his first mission, he has delivered over a million newspapers, more than 20,000 letters and 10,000-plus parcels in Pumachangthang, and has never been accused of failing or mixing up mail.
One night, a local resident Nyima Tsering’s daughter had fainted and desperately needed help. Knowing that, the mailman arranged for a car right away and sent her to the county hospital. He also gave some cash to the family for the girl’s treatment. Nyima Tsering’s daughter recovered soon, and Tsering Chopa became an idol in the village.
The busiest time for Tsering Chopa is between July and August each year, when students are waiting for their admission letters from various universities. He recalls once he had to deliver mail to one student whose family had already moved away. He had to ask neighbors several times to find the new address. It was summer and the usual road to the village was blocked because of rain. He trekked for more than 20 km and struggled with shortness of breath all the way to finally deliver the letter.
In 2019, Tsering Chopa received the China Youth May Fourth Medal. “It is an acknowledgment of what I do and a token of encouragement as well,” he says. “And I want to help more people living in remote areas. I want to bring the world closer to them and take them closer to the world.”

“Start warming up,” our coach told us,roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches,we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field.“There will be two commands,” he boomed.“Runners set, then the gun.If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again.” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.
“Runners set!”the starter shouted.Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way.Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn,my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then,in what felt like only one minute,I arrived at the one mile mark.
“6′10″,” a man declared as I ran by.I tried to ignore him,but my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go.I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three.Minutes later,I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time.Just as I almost reached my limit,a boy passed me.He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.

W: When I heard college staff were required for a learning exchange trip to restad Gymnasium in Copenhagen, I was quick to sign up. I’d heard great things about this innovative school and wanted to see it for myself. Upon arrival, after the students had been paired up with their exchange partners, I was introduced to Anna, the Spanish teacher who would be hosting me. She gave me a tour and I soon understood what makes the school so different. Firstly, there are no classrooms. Instead, the huge open space is divided up into four large “study zones”, each on a separate level and connected by stairs. Each study zone is separated by bookshelves to create smaller “group areas”. The few more traditional classrooms, mainly science labs, have glass walls to maintain the open feel. The idea is to create a sense of togetherness and develop the students’ independent learning abilities. Learning here is entirely digital, and learning materials can be acquired online at any time. Study schedules are flexible, and teachers act mostly as coaches, leaving students responsible for their own learning. With 1,100 16- to 19-year-olds “running wild”, I expected school days to be noisy. Instead, I was extremely amazed to discover a quiet, focused atmosphere. Giving students adult responsibility seems to help them learn good habits and prepare them for the real world.
18.Who is the speaker probably
A. A coach. B. A guide. C. A teacher.
【答案】C
19.How many study zones are there in restad Gymnasium
A. 4. B. 8. C. 16.
【答案】A
20.What surprised the speaker most about restad Gymnasium
A. Its learning materials. B. Its learning schedule. C. Its learning atmosphere.
【答案】C

1.are known 2.tasty 3.most expensive 4.with 5.to bear 6.whether/if 7.making 8.which/that 9.the 10.happens
根据句意及文章最后一句中的“the most costly nuts in the world”提示可知,设空处需填入形容词的最高级修饰名词nuts,表示“最贵的”,expensive的最高级为the most expensive,句中已有the,故填most expensive。
故填with。
故填to bear。
故填whether或if。
故填which或that。
故填the。

I yawned(打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus.I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride, thinking about that day's race.I had never raced in a statewide race before.Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus,and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one,I asked the boy to run without me.
I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground. My world was clouded by total darkness. How I wish the ground to crack and swallow me!I could feel everybody was staring at me,widening their mouths and not being able to utter a word. The sudden silence brought a sharp pain in my knees and “failure” was the only word flashing in my mind. Then the silence was broken by a deep voice,“You won't give up so easily, will you?”The boy ahead of me turned back and pulled me up.“Let's run to the finishing line together!”The second mile saw its end while we ran shoulder to shoulder.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one,I asked the boy to run without me.“You could win a place if you went by yourself.” I looked at him in the eyes with sweat blurring my sight. The boy breathing heavily, drops of sweat rolled down his face.He shook his head saying,“Winning a place is not that important.”Then we smiled at each other as if we had been the only runners. The last mile seemed shorter and we enjoyed the moment when we passed the finishing line together with thunderous applause.I know they cheered for us not for winning a race but for something more important.
