Text 10
M: Hello, I’m Maxim Vengerov, and I’m very happy to share with you my connection with Open Tchaikovsky Competition. It was June 1986 when I came to Moscow to participate in Open Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 10 from Chelyabinsk. This was actually the turning point of my life. Then I attended a world music festival in Berlin. And it was interesting to say that a kid made his breakthrough already at the age of 10. And that was me. Now as a judge of the competition, I can see clearly the huge challenges facing the musicians in the competition. Where else can you see young players playing within ten days classical works and Russian traditional music before coming to the final stage As a musician, it’s important to give maximum attention and time to your own reflections of your own feelings. So, what I’m really looking for in the competition is to meet someone who can touch me musically. I want to see the seed, at least the seed of the great tree that can grow. I would go for this violinist. I would go for this musician.

根据第三段关键句“Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (声音) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says.” 故选A项。
根据第四段内容“In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-coloured numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward.”
根据最后一段内容“Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is ‘excellent’ even if the findings are ‘not unexpected’, given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence.”

Some emojis could help to promote perception of certain biological classifications online, Wijeratne suggests.”(“这篇论文提出了一个实际的问题,”他说道,并指出过去的研究表明,在社交媒体帖子中加入表情符号可以促进积极参与。
根据第五段的“But Lee doesn’t think any of these will make the cut soon. She even previously advocated for a starfish emoji, whose uses proved too limited.”(但Lee认为这些都不会很快投入使用。 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段的“Despite the difficulty of expanding emojis, big advances in emoji biodiversity have already been made.”(尽管扩展表情符号很困难,但表情符号生物多样性已经取得了很大进展。)和Ficetola的话“‘My personal feeling is that we have a better understanding of biodiversity now, emojis included,’ he says. ‘Still, we can always do better.’”(“我个人的感觉是,我们现在对生物多样性有了更好的理解,包括表情符号,”他说,“不过,我们总是可以做得更好。”)

根据第三段“But while the taste function of papillae has been well researched, far less is known about the differences in shape, size and patterns of papillae between different people. To investigate, Andreeva and her colleagues thus trained AI computer models to learn from thousands of microscopic scans of individual papillae, taken from silicone moulds (硅胶模型) of 15 people’s tongues, mapping their size, characteristics and location on the tongues’ surfaces.”
根据第四段“We were surprised to see how unique these tongue features are to each individual…”(我们惊讶地发现,每个人的舌头特征都是独一无二的……)

South America has a long and interesting coastline. When it comes to beaches, there are some excellent options to be found across the continent.
Sancho Beach
This beach is an amazing stretch of sand with peaceful waters. The clear waters are perfect for swimming but it is difficult to access. It can only be reached by boat or by climbing down the rocky hillsides on each end, so it isn’t particularly good for younger children or people who are physically challenged.
Vichayito Beach
Just a short distance from the waterfront town of Mancora, this lovely beach is often quiet and peaceful, offering some nice shallow water to swim in for little ones. A little further out, the waves pick up, making for fine surfing and windsurfing surroundings, while the charming village offers nice accommodation.
Copacabana Beach
The cold water here means it isn’t an ideal swimming location, but there are good spots for surfing and windsurfing. Various water activities make it a great beach. Visit early, especially in the busy tourist season, not only to avoid crowds, but also to gain admittance—visitors will be turned away once the park reaches peak capacity.
Jericoacoara Beach
Located near the city centre, this beach is very popular among surfers thanks to its great waves. It isn’t too rough to swim for experienced swimmers, although a slightly rocky seafloor means you should be careful. With large crowds of people, the best time to visit is sunset—arrive early to get a good viewing spot.

The rock group Counting Crows(乌鸦) were onto something when they chose their band name. Crows can indeed count, according to research published this week in Science.
The results show that crows have counting capacity near those of human babies, says lead study author Diana Liao, a researcher at the University of Tbingen in Germany. “We think this is the first time that this has been shown for any animal species,” she adds.
Crows do not appear to be capable of symbolic counting, where numbers serve as an exact representation. Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (声音) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says. For example, a baby who is asked how many apples are on a tree may answer, “One, one, one.” The baby produces the number of speech sounds which agree with that of the apples, rather than just saying, “Three.”
In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-coloured numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward.
After receiving about 180 training sessions, all of the crows were able to produce the correct number of vocalizations associated with the hints—a “pretty cool” finding, Liao says. She suspects, too, that the crows could have mastered numbers higher than four if they were given the opportunity.
Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is “excellent” even if the findings are “not unexpected”, given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence.

A.By counting objects on the screen.
B.By picking colours from the touch screen.
C.By choosing between sounds and images.
D.By matching sounds to visual and audio hints.
( )27.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The research is poorly recognized.

Many digital characters we call emojis describe the natural world. Yet the emoji tree of life is imbalanced, according to a study published recently in the journal iScience.
Researchers analysing the comprehensive Emojipedia (表情图标百科) found that vertebrate animals (脊椎动物) are heavily favoured over all other types of life, while plants are hardly featured at all—and some branches of biodiversity are missing entirely. The study authors suggest that these gaps could influence digital communication about protection and biology.
Emojis are an increasingly large part of human communication, and it’s worth examining the holes, says Sanjaya Wijeratne, a computer scientist who has studied emoji meaning and use. “The paper asks a virtual question,” he says, noting that past research suggests that including emojis in social media posts can boost positive engagement. Some emojis could help to promote perception of certain biological classifications online, Wijeratne suggests.
But emojis come with costs, says Jennifer Lee, a current member of the non-profit Unicode Consortium’s Emoji Subcommittee, which is responsible for shaping international emoji standards. Every additional emoji requires storage space and adds to keyboard clutter. New emojis must be carefully considered and meet standards of use frequency.
Study co-author Gentile Francesco Ficetola, a biologist at the University of Milan, isn’t advocating for every species to get its cartoon version. Instead, he and his colleagues suggest increasing virtual representation by adding just three new emojis that would significantly boost diversity: a flatworm, a water bear and a starfish. But Lee doesn’t think any of these will make the cut soon. She even previously advocated for a starfish emoji, whose uses proved too limited. “I tried,” she says. “And it’s pretty, but that’s it.”
Despite the difficulty of expanding emojis, big advances in emoji biodiversity have already been made. The number of animal types more than doubled between 2015 and 2022, according to the study, which was a pleasant surprise for Ficetola. “My personal feeling is that we have a better understanding of biodiversity now, emojis included,” he says. “Still, we can always do better.”

A.Come into use. B.Get across.
C.Spring to mind. D.Stay still.
( )31.How does Ficetola think about the expansion of emojis
A.Challenging. B.Unclear.
C.Hopeless. D.Optimistic.

Whether they are long, slim, or wide, our tongues may be even more unique than we give them credit for. An analysis suggests that each of us may have a unique “tongue print” just as we have individual fingerprints.
Averaging about just 10 cm in length, with only the front two-thirds visible, our tongues are covered in hundreds of small buds, known as papillae, some of which hold our taste buds, whereas others enable our tongues to sense texture (口感), friction, and touch. “These are critical for interaction and transport of food and liquids in the mouth,” said Rayna Andreeva, a PhD student at the University of Edinburgh, who led the research. “They may also influence our psychological reactions to food—for example, how satisfied we feel after eating appears to be influenced by our perception of friction.”
But while the taste function of papillae has been well researched, far less is known about the differences in shape, size and patterns of papillae between different people. To investigate, Andreeva and her colleagues thus trained AI computer models to learn from thousands of microscopic scans of individual papillae, taken from silicone moulds (硅胶模型) of 15 people’s tongues, mapping their size, characteristics and location on the tongues’ surfaces.
Ultimately, the researchers found that a single papilla could predict someone’s gender and age with moderate accuracy, up to 67%—75%, and even the specific individual could be identified from the 15 study participants with about 48% accuracy (a random predictor would have an accuracy of just 6.66%). “We were surprised to see how unique these tongue features are to each individual,” said Professor Rik Sarkar at the University of Edinburgh.
The research could provide new insights into how tongue features correlate with various foods, according to the researchers. “Imagine being able to design individually targeted food according to the conditions of specific people and thus ensure they can get proper nutrition while enjoying their food,” Andreeva said. “For instance, a better understanding of the physical mechanisms that happen when different people eat chocolate could lead to alternatives that offer a similar feel and sensation but with a lower fat content.”
( )32.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A.The impact of tongue size on food preferences.
B.The functions of the different parts of our tongue.
C.The psychological reactions to food consumption.
D.The significant role of papillae in food perception.
( )33.What was the primary focus of Andreeva and her colleagues’ research
A.How different patterns of papillae affect people’s taste.
B.How physical features of papillae vary among individuals.
C.What factors contribute to the differences in tongue papillae.
D.What methods can be used to measure the differences in papillae.
( )34.Which of the following statements might Rik Sarkar agree with
A.People of the same age share similar tongue papillae.
B.Tongue papillae can be used as a means of identification.
C.The size and distribution of tongue papillae change with age.
D.It is hard to predict one’s gender based on tongue papillae alone.
( )35.How can the research potentially benefit food producers
A.By improving their food production efficiency.
B.By enhancing their food preservation techniques.
C.By making food cater to the consumers’ needs.
D.By having more ways to improve the taste of food.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colourful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warned me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mum, can I go out and play in the garden ” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
Paragraph 1:
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

Paragraph 2:
“Kate ” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice.
