Pasma “Molai” Payeng, who grew up in a tiny village in India, was just 16 years old when he realized his life mission — to grow trees all his life.
It was in 1979 that something disturbing happened around his home. A flood had struck the area and washed some snakes up on the sandbar. As the water dried up, the sun burned the land. Without trees or shade, the snakes died. Seeing their dead bodies, Molai felt heartbroken. He realized that if trees grew there, animals could survive.
Molai turned to the forest officials, only to be told that nothing would grow there. However, Molai went looking on his own and finally discovered a nearby island where he began to plant bamboo saplings. Watering them twice daily in the dry season was really a tough task for a lone boy. To save time, he built bamboo platforms over each sapling and placed clay pots with tiny holes above them. Rainwater slowly dripped down, keeping the plants alive.
After years of care, the bamboo grew tall. Molai then planted trees. To improve the soil, he even brought red ants, which break down dead leaves but sting painfully. Despite the discomfort, he continued.
It took Molai 30 years to turn the sandbar into a forest. He lived simply with his family, selling milk from their cattle to survive. Most of his work was unpaid, but he never gave up because he loved nature.
Years later, elephants damaged the village. When officials searched for them, they discovered Molai’s thick, green forest on the once-barren (曾经荒芜的) sandbar. They were shocked. News spread, and people came to learn about his efforts. Molai’s story inspired others to protect nature.
“Everyone must help save nature,” Molai said. Though he lived a simple life, he was proud to have awakened many people’s love for nature.
4. What motivated Molai to start his tree-planting project
A. The desire for financial rewards.
B. The shock from seeing dead snakes.
C. The influence of forest officials.
D. The request from his family.
5. What was the direct function of clay pots
A. Collecting the rainwater.
B. Keeping the plants alive.
C. Channeling the rainwater.
D. Protecting bamboo saplings.
6. Why is the search for elephants mentioned in paragraph 6
A. To explain why Molai chose to plant trees in that area.
B. To criticize the officials for not helping Molai earlier.
C. To demonstrate how Molai’s efforts gained public attention.
D. To prove that Molai’s forest was large enough to attract elephants.
7. Which of the following best describes Molai according to the passage
A. Modest and reserved.
B. Grateful and content.
C. Selfish and unconcerned.
D. Determined and persistent.

Since the start of the industrial revolution, there have been threats that new machines would take over human jobs. For the most part, humans have won. Now, with AI application on the horizon, the threat’s being realized: the robots really are coming for some jobs.
A March 2023 report estimated that across the EU and US, 300 million jobs could be lost to automation (自动化). Thankfully, it’s not all bad news: there are still things AI isn’t capable of — tasks that involve clearly human qualities, like emotional intelligence and outside-the-box thinking.
Martin Ford, author of Rule of the Robots: How Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Everything, claims there will be three types of jobs surviving in the near future. The first is genuinely creative work, where people generate new ideas and build something novel rather than doing formulaic (公式化的,刻板的) or rearranging tasks. The second protected category comprises jobs needing complex interpersonal skills, like nurses and journalists, as AI lacks the ability to build relationships. The third safe zone consists of jobs requiring mobility, skills and problem-solving in unpredictable situations, which are hardest to automate.
It’s important to notice that an advanced education or a high-paying position is not a defence against AI takeover. In many cases, more educated workers are going to be more threatened than then even the least educated workers.
“Think of the person who cleans hotel rooms — it’s really hard to automate that job.” Ford said.
In short seeking roles in dynamic, shifting environments that include unpredictable tasks is a good way to avoid job loss to AI. At least, for a while.
8. What is the main concern caused by AI according to the passage
A. AI development is slower than experts initially predicted.
B. Potential job loss due to AI automation is alarmingly huge.
C. AI’s lack of creativity makes it unsuitable for most modern jobs.
D AI will lead to widespread unemployment without any solutions.
9. What does the underlined word in the paragraph 2 mean
A. Creative. B. Independent.
C. Previous. D. Average.
10. According to Martin Ford, which job is LEAST likely to be replaced by AI soon
A. A data analyst processing large datasets.
B. A white-collar employee dealing with paperwork.
C. A factory worker putting products together exactly and repeatedly.
D. A social worker building trust and providing support to poor families.
11. Which could be the best title for the passage
A. All Jobs at Risk from AI
B. The Battle for Employment
C. Human Qualities Defining Future Work
D. Emotional Intelligence Winning AI

Chinese researchers have discovered that lotus roots, typically considered crispy and fragile, possess high-strength composite structures suitable for bone repair. Wu Jun, an associate professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), explains that through processing, the strength of lotus root materials is enhanced, allowing them to maintain long-lasting support.
Lotus roots feature natural, continuous pores (细孔) that create an ideal environment for bone regeneration. The porous (透气的) structure promotes the growth of new blood vessels and nerves, facilitating oxygen and nutrient exchange at injury spots. Additionally, lotus root scaffolds show excellent biocompatibility (生物相容性) with minimal toxic side effects.
Four years ago, Wu and his team began experimenting with lotus root-derived biomaterials for bone repair and skin wound dressings. In experiments, mice treated with lotus root materials showed accelerated bone injury recovery compared to controls. When inserted into broken bones, the biodegradable lotus root material keeps pace with the bone’s regeneration rate, degrading naturally as the bone heals.
Currently, bone cement, a common polymer material, mainly aids in restoring bone structure but has limited bone regeneration capabilities. Lotus root biomaterials are expected to replace nonporous, biologically inactive bone cement, which often causes inflammation (炎症) and tissue proliferation (增生) over time.
The production of lotus root biomaterials involves cleaning, freeze-drying, mineralization (矿化), and fine processing to maintain their natural structure. These materials can be tailored into three-dimensional scaffolds suited to individual bone injuries.
Wu’s team plans to conduct large animal experiments on sheep to further confirm their findings. Beyond bone repair, they are exploring the use of lotus roots in wound dressings to promote faster healing, highlighting the material’s broad medical potential.
12. Lotus roots are considered suitable for bone repair because of _______.
A. ease of processing
B. crispiness and fragility
C. common use in cooking
D. high-strength composite structures
13. What result was found in the mouse-based experiments
A. Lotus root materials caused an inflammatory response in the mice.
B. Lotus root materials promoted a faster healing process of bone injuries.
C. Lotus root materials failed to make any difference in bone injury recovery.
D. Lotus root materials broke down too rapidly to have any therapeutic value.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the potential of lotus root biomaterials
A. Doubtful. B. Critical.
C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
15. The passage mainly focuses on ________.
A. the drawback of common bone-repair methods
B. the features and medical uses of lotus root biomaterials
C. the comparison between lotus root and bone cements
D. the difficulties in creating new bone-repair substances

Sarai desperately held out the halter (笼头,缰绳) to her rescue horse, Amadore. “Please,” she whispered, reminding him her father would send him back if she couldn’t halter him by tomorrow. But Amadore still shied away each time she reached for him.
“Your expression is the issue here,” came a voice from a stable (马厩) boy. Sarai sighed, and turned to see the unfamiliar boy while keeping Amadore in sight.
“Who are you ” she asked.
“I’m Cody and I know where your problem lies,” he smiled. Frowning at the newcomer, Sarai noted she’d never seen him before.
“We just moved here” Cody explained.
“If you don’t know me or my horse,” Sarai asked, “how could you possibly know my problem ”
“I just do,” Cody smiled again.
Sarai rolled her eyes and turned away. “Leave me alone, I’ve got work.” Yet after another failure, she swallowed her pride and asked for help.
Without hesitation, Cody showed his horse two photos: one of a smiling face, the other of an angry one. The horse stayed calm when shown the smiling face but shied away from the scowl (不悦的神色). “Horses read our expressions,” Cody explained.
Encouraged, Sarai took a deep breath. Smiling with a relaxed face, she approached Amadore again. His ears switched (猛拉) forward. She gently lifted the halter and Amadore stepped right into it. “We did it,” she breathed a sigh of relief.
As they led Amadore out effortlessly, they passed by a door about three meters away, and heard a commotion(骚动). It was another two struggling boys who were trying to brush down a buckskin horse (栗棕色马). But it was snorting (打着响鼻) and stepping away from them, the two boys frowning in frustration.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)开头已给出。
Sarai grinned. “I know what your problem is.”

With food waste becoming increasingly serious among students, our school launched the “Clear Your Plate” campaign last week.
During meal times, student volunteers stood at the dining hall entrance, reminding everyone to take only what they could finish. Meanwhile, a short video about food production and the hardship faced by farmers was shown on the big screen, which deeply touched many students. Additionally, students in each class who had the cleanest plates were highly praised.
This event turned out to be extremely meaningful. It not only made me more grateful for the food in my plate, but also inspired me to adopt a more mindful eating habit. I hope such activities will be held regularly, inspiring more students to cherish food.
47. Paragraph 1:
Sarai grinned. “I know what your problem is!” Hardly had her voice faded away, Sarai slipped inside the stall, slowly and deliberately. Ignoring the kids’ puzzled looks, Sarai focused on the horse. “Easy, girl,” she murmured, smiling as she gently reached out for the brush in the nearest boy’s tense hand. “May I ” she asked softly. Her calm voice and relaxed posture was an obvious contrast to the boys’ earlier tension. Sarai took the brush and began to make slow, rhythmic strokes on the horse’s shoulder, humming softly.
Paragraph 2:
The buckskin horse’s nervousness faded almost unnoticed. Watching Sarai, the two kids exchanged glances, their own frowns easing. Hesitantly, one of them tried imitating Sara’s smile. Seeing this, Sarai whispered, “See The horse feels your worry. Stay calm and smile.” Then, the other boy reached out. This time, the buckskin horse stopped snorting and stood still, accepting the touch. A wave of quiet relief washed over Sarai. A simple smile, a silent language of kindness understood by every heart, human or horse, was the most powerful tool.
